I work at Rivian in Illinois, and it’s hands down the best company I’ve ever worked for! Every employee is very determined to see this company thrive. I’m glad to see that people are enjoying the vehicles.
@@FJB2020 For sure, and if you look into their IPO filing it’s revealed that Amazon owns about 1/4 of the company, has a lot of control/say and has the right to prioritize fulfillment of their orders first. @@annemarita4259 lol no, im just really impressed by this truck because of the amount of innovation that went into it even ignoring that it is electric. I dont even like trucks and was saving to buy a model s but this truck is starting to make me reconsider. One thing i do know is ICE vehicles are dead. 👻
They had some good testing on the long way up. Gave it to Ewan McGregor's support team whilst he drove a hell of a long way on electric Harley's with his mate through many different terrains :D

10:50 The guys from Motor Trend took two of these across the country in a 5-part video you can find on youtube. In one of the episodes they had mentioned that because of how quiet it is, when they were blazing unpaved trails, there was just so much nature they were immersed in. Animals wouldn't scurry away, deer would just walk along with you, unlike a combustion engine that would make noise and get the animals to run away. Basically its a great way for those that like to get out in nature, open the windows and just be closer to that nature than ever.
Being so quiet can be a safety issue because pedestrians can't hear you coming. My neighbor has a hybrid Toyota SUV with a built in nose option. It makes a weird sound sort of like a Star Trek transporter whenever the car is moving.
From a European, this is what true American innovation looks like! Absolutely stunning work and I hope to be able to drive this truck in the EU one day.
Its not unneccessary in Europe. Here in Scandinavia, in Finland and Iceland, this size pickup truck is very useful. Still, strange to sees a non "niche" US car one would actually want over here
There is always that language which reveals a hidden meaning of some car names. In this case if you use a lot of Swedish dad humor You could spell the name Rivian like “Rivjärn” which is a cheesegrater 🧀. 🇸🇪 hehe
I love the size, not to offensively large and not too impractically small. Storage facilities are great and that tunnel thing is epic. The screen isn't in-your-face too large. And really good ground clearance. My two criticisms are: no physical buttons for simple things like heater, stereo; and some of the interior plastic is just too cheap.

@The Dragon Slayer first of all not most people have 70k in liquid cash to put into stocks, even if they did, they would not put it all in tesla stocks.
One thing that people always forget to mention is that you can stop at ANY campground that has a NEMA 14-50 outlet and charge your Rivian (or Tesla). The only Caveat is that you will usually need to rent an RV spot to get the power outlet.

Thanks to some close ups and decent footage, I can see that this truck was built with care using some nice materials for a premium feel. I think RJ has shown us that quality is important and what people want after spending 70k upwards. I liked everything shown on this video, I'm genuinely excited about this vehicle, its got such classic lines that won't look out of date like some of the other brands coming out. A timeless design. Rivian has gone way above and beyond on intentional design here. Just look at how many things they've included that could be so useful. No rock has been left unturned. The flashlight in the door is such an amazingly cool feature that could have been so easily overlooked. The Bluetooth speaker is amazing as well. Charging ports, compressor to inflate your own tires....my god. I'm looking at purchasing a vehicle in the next 5-10 years and the Rivian is bang on top of the charts. I thought I was going Tesla, but Rivian has just got it made here. I really, really hope mass production does not lead to compromises that deteriorate the insane functionality of this vehicle. As a tradesman, the 7 feet of base with the tailgate folded down is greatly appreciated. I hope there is 4' of room in between those wheel wells, but as someone who has found workarounds for carrying drywall/plywood in a Tacoma, I think I'll be ok if there isn't. I'm keeping an eye on you guys. Seriously impressive stuff.
I think its hilarious hearing liberals say stuff like "Every vehicle should be electric". The Lighting with standard battery, advertising 230 miles, while pulling 3,500 lbs... got 70 miles of range. Now imagine if temps were 0 to -20. You'd get 30-40 miles of actual range. As of 2022, we are a long ways away from a REAL electric pickup. LOL!!!!! I'd like one of these tree hugging liberals to explain how that is going to work. Reaaaaady. Set.... Explain.

The way that the Charging port door opened was the ultimate flex for me! Can’t wait for their IPO to go public soon so I can buy lot of them! Excellent review once again!
Anyone see "Long Way Up" where they used a prototype Rivian to drive from the most southern part of south america to LA. Also had all electric Harleys! Great show!
I (We) much appreciate your video review... Recently, I saw a Rivian crossing I-90 floating bridge in Seattle. I could tell the driver was busily enjoying driving the vehicle that he forgot to use LT turn signal and not look over his shoulder that he almost side-wiped me. As much as I was surprised to see a Rivian on the road, I couldn't get mad at him. A smart vehicle like Tesla is going to get better over the next five years. Congrats! On your growth and success. I have been following your UA-cam career since the beginning. I loved the Studio tour.
This thing just makes a lot of sense, and this is me speaking from a non-Truck country. Good stuff! Good overview, these autofocus videos are becoming among the better car reviews on UA-cam :D.
on the flip side, where I'm at in the states, this thing is over-priced and useless. Seems to expensive and limited to be practical. To tiny, to light, to low, not durable enough for our roads/hauiling. We also have almost no where to charge EV's. For the euro or coastal markets, it makes sense

Won't lie, I thought the Rivian was mainly overly hyped/PR crap but this thing seems to be very well thought out and good quality. Great review, thank you!
@@floki1664 research on what? a few prototypes? Rivian has still a lot to prove, mainly if they can scale production and get good margins, I'm rooting for them, because competition is good, but they're not out of the woods, and by a long shot.
As a Texan, the problem I see with that statement is that most people I know that drive trucks think electric vehicles are garbage, look down them, and would never buy one.
I've been following development of the R1T for YEARS... it's well outside my price range, and I want to own one someday, however, all the details in this video that haven't been easily noticed in other videos, this was quite refreshing. :)
They are targeting the Land Rover market or the premium truck market. This allows Ford and Rivian to co-exist without targeting each others demographic.
I'm a huge EV supporter and a first-day Tesla Model 3 reservation holder, but EV prices are heading the wrong way. I've never spent more than $28,000 on a car, all I want is a nice hatchback or small crossover with 200 miles range. So the Kia Soul EV or an updated Nissan Leaf without the dying CHAdeMO plug would be fine. But the 2020 Soul EV never made it to the USA and Nissan is replacing the Leaf with the $40,000+ 2022 Ariya. Instead everyone wants to sell $50,000+ electric SUVs and now trucks; the trailing automakers have the tax credit to make it slightly more affordable if you pay enough taxes. I'm glad most car makers are selling all the EVs they can make, I don't fault Tesla for raising prices, and at those prices established car makers should make money and continue EV investments. But it makes EVs less affordable, and leaves a huge hole in the market for Chinese manufacturers.
The FORD video kinda sucked. You could tell Marquios really wasn’t being honest about it. He typically digs tech, but clearly wasn’t into the design of the lightening. Lame name too.

The Rivian hype was really annoying and it took so long to get to market but it is great to see this truck in real life. I hope Rivian succeeds big time.
It was really shitty hype, especially for such a mediocre vehicle at the cost. Rivian lived and breathed off of tesla hype. Now is their time to try and doggie paddle themselves to making money. I want them to succeed too, but they should have started with more intelligent options, like a delivery van. This truck is too basic and useless to be a starting premium vehicle for Rivian. I think starting with this truck is their largest mistake they have made so far as a company.
@@jf8138 how to hype with a delivery van? They are a new company and they needed hype and and they started with the most popular form factor in USA (pickup). All done correct.
@@jf8138 tbh they have alot going for them with this, if we ignore the people driving 4hours each way to work with a several ton trailer it is a very good work vehicle. Get to the site and you already have power and air for tools, the main problem is cost. They simply cost way to much for what they give, get a diesel + a generator and you change car again before your up to the same cost including fuel!
The US really just needs to standardise the CCS1 charging connector. The EU standarised the CCS2 connector, and even Tesla uses it on their cars sold in Europe today.
@NEO It's obviously not better. And do you even realise what you said? Let everybody change the thing to adapt to 1 country. I don't know what kind of stuff you're on, but you ought to stay clear of that.
@NEO Europe and Asia make electric cars too. Tbh, I don’t think it matters if the Europe and US have different connectors, it’s not like people are going to be shipping these cars between continents
I love the step doors on the side and all the storage. This thing is made for off-road camping. Others have said it. The performance 3 seconds 0-100 quad motor and 70-80 K is a bargain!
If it was available in Australia, and I was rich enough, I would definitely consider getting one in gun metal grey and comparing it to Fords electric Ute option as that also looked awesome. This is definitely an electric Ute I would seriously consider.
These will be hugely popular in Australia when they manage an RHD version. Price will be up there, sure, but there’s no lack of Land Cruisers, Patrols, Raptors, converted US pickups and other AUD$100K vehicles getting out. Tradies have plenty of money, clearly. I just need to figure out how to convince my boss I need one as a work vehicle… ;-)
@@KuroRyuu86 they did do their winter/cold-weather testing in New Zealand as well. This truck would be super popular in NZ as well I'd reckon. And we're not even that big! Unfortunately that may take some form of government regulations before that happens I don't see tesla switching ports willingly or allowing others to use their port
This is a must in the US, I have been wanting to export a Tesla model 3 from the US to my country and the only "wall" standing between me and doing that is the charging port and AC to DC charger inside the car, it does not support 3 phase 400V and the port well... we use the CCS/ type 2 standard, contacted Tesla about replacing those in the service center in Dubai if I imported a US spec one and they just shut me down and told me we don't do that even if you pay us whatever we ask. Why do I want a US spec one instead of the one being sold in Dubai Tesla showroom? Well the simple fact its much cheaper and easier to import a car from the US than one from the neighboring country ( UAE ). Anyhow, it seems Tesla does not want to listen and are moving towards lessening their customers ability to modify their cars...
@@nightarrow7473 I once asked Audi to upgrade the head unit on my car and they refused. It was just a double DIN replacement swap. Trying to get any manufacturer to alter the charger....no chance. Actually, I reckon the gear tunnel might be good to sleep in if a person is the right length. You could leave the port open going into the back seats for air.
I think the gear tunnel would be really usefur for one's tools (aka gear), with the power outlets you could even charge the batteries of power tools. And you won't have to put your precious gear in the bed where you put the materials and stuff.
There's a clip around with a complete camping kitchen kit that you can pull out of it. Really adds amazing functionality. Probably easy to add a rail system and put in all your tools and a workbench in there as well.
I kind of wish they didn’t put the access to the gear tunnel in the back seat, because having it as a secure space that cannot be accessed by breaking windows is nice.
@@benkitesurfs everything is accesible by breaking windows. and it would be a simple fix to build a non removable cover on the inside. The most secure will always be a steel job bin in the bed although not discreet

apart from the oval headlights, which i don't like, it really looks stunning, especially the wood in the interior makes it look luxurious and modern at the same time
This feels more interesting than the competition, so far. The cybertruck has a..."controversial" design, the F150 is great but not distinctive enough, the EV Hummer is pretty cool, but the Rivian for me is the coolest.
Seems like this thing has everything you would need. It's large enough but also small enough. It's powerful enough but also has enough range. It can handle rough terrain while also being comfy enough on the road. It has very quirky features like a literal kitchen hidden in the "gear tunnel". It also looks cool, luxurious and futuristic. I wouldn't buy it because it's a truck but if i was looking for a truck i would look no further.

@@WildWest144 in Europe an EV is significantly cheaper to run than an ICE car. The vast majority of trips can be done in existing EVs charged only at home.
@@WildWest144 Well, let's find out. We'll assume your car gets 45 mpg and my EV gets 3 miles per kWh. Obviously some EVs do better than that, as do some gasoline cars. Plug in your own numbers, no pun intended. 100 miles of gasoline: 100 miles × $3 / 45 mpg = $6.66 100 miles of electricity: 100 miles × $0.11 / 3 mpkWh = $3.66
Saw my first Rivian on the road yesterday, looked fantastic. I drive a Tesla but am excited that by the time I'm in the market for a new car there will be so many more options in terms of truly good EVs to choose from.
Except the price. This is like twice the price of a conventional well loaded pick up truck. So this is going to be a rich people toy more than a worker's vehicle. Also, the 4.5 foot storage bay is just not enough. Still really nice though.

I love the fact that the infotainment screen shows images of car's accurate color! I wonder if it's changes dynamically if you were driving a different color.
Waiting on the R1S SUV. What I love about Rivian is that it has interesting gimmicks like Tesla does but in areas where it makes sense. The different key fobs with one being an activity bracelet similar to Land Rovers, the many cargo compartments including the gear tunnel which also doubles as a bench, it has its own version of sentry mode which is one of the only Tesla gimmicks I actually care for, a rechargeable portable speaker, a rechargeable portable flashlight, a built in air compressor, many household charge ports in the frunk and cargo bed, and the security cable for having a bicycle in the rear. No useless garbage like a steering yoke that is in there because the narcissist CEO feels like having it there even if many of his customers hate it, or a completely useless smart summons where the car moves like a confused snail, takes forever for the car to get to you at which point I'd rather just get the stupid car myself. The interior looks nicer and way better put together than that of Teslas, and most of all, the car looks like it has character of which I find Teslas are completely devoid of.
As far as I'm concerned, they already are. Rivian developed the R1T in exactly the right way...slowly and with a laser focus on high quality and real world functionality. Tesla is known for rushing models to market that aren't ready for prime time and their build quality is suffers as a result.
I think it’s time for these companies to join together and figure out which charging will be standard. Starting to feel like Tesla is the apple of things. Doing their own thing
In Australia it’s standard (Teslas have a Type 2 AC charger and CCS2 DC fast charge like most electric cars). I think it’s probably the same in Europe. I assume it’s just a matter of not having the right kind of regulation in the US?
@@stephengentle2815 Not sure what the original terms were, but wish federal government would've told EV makers they can get loans if they agree on a universal charging standard and not create proprietary infrastructure.

There was a prototype used in the show “Long Way Up” with Ewan MacGregor as a backup vehicle. It was really amazing how it coped with different terrains. It’s an amazing car
Great review. This truck is extremely well-designed but for the software improvements needed as you mentioned. They really made a good decision with the pass-through cargo and the powered frunk. Love the optional camping setup too. Rivian still needs to solve mass production but so far so good! I think the pass-through cargo could be used for guns as mentioned in the comments....but also shopping, maybe skis or a snowboard, ski/snowboard gear (if the boards/skis don't fit). It's such a cool space. I love that one can stand on the fold-out doors. Also, the charger being in the front is a nice touch.
As a lifelong hunter, and occasional competitive shooter, it would be really cool to have that as safe storage for rifles and shotguns. Presumably all the exterior hatches lock, but what would be even cooler would be to have the option for a combination lock of some kind on the pass-through cargo. Maybe that's an unnecessary idea, but who says that cool has to be necessary?
The Rivian R1T is just fantastic. But I will actually wait for it as you did. I really love the space keeping and makes them available enough to take all cares. Big shout out to Ravian. Let the future keep coming.

This is one of the best UA-cam videos I've seen in a long time. Good production values and great narration. I'm looking at the Rivian truck right now and this really helps me know what to look for when I test drive it this week.
My mom’s 2000 Oldsmobile Silhouette Premier minivan also featured a compressor in the rear with a long hose for us to use. Usually was used for our bicycle tires but was strong and long enough to pump up car tires as well. Pretty cool to see that here.
I’m really digging the everything and the kitchen sink, but that being said, the Ford F150 lightning with the true massive front storage and electrical capabilities win it for me.
Fair enough - they're clearly going for different market segments. But if you're talking about lockable storage accessible directly from the outside, you have to factor in Rivian's gear tunnel to supplement the front storage. That said, it amazes me that EVs have had front trunks for years and it took Ford to come along and notice that you may as well have it open from the front and not just from above.
@@alh06 If you say so. The marketing I've seen about the F-150 Lightning is all about being a work truck, while the marketing I've seen from Rivian is all about outdoor sport and offroading. We all may be jumping the gun if we went into early right now, this new battery technology that they have coming out is going to be mind blowing and would make us feel a little silly for jumping in now.
@@mrgoodhands321 I hear you on the idea of jumping into the EV game too early, when there might be big leaps in battery technology just around the corner. In fact, I don't plan to buy for awhile either - though mostly because I don't own a car at all, and don't really need one. Worth keeping in mind that this same mindset affects all technology of the past 40 years. At some point, if you want the thing, you have to just accept that, and buy the thing. (Also, for cars, you can sometimes hedge your bets with a lease.)

I would buy one of these in a heartbeat if the price was lower. I think the biggest hurdle for EVs to truly succeed is the pricing. Great and really cool vehicles out there but still WAY too expensive for the common man.
Sadly enough if you really look at a compreblely equipped truck form most other manufactures you are looking ant roughly the same ball park in pricing. what needs to happen at all these EV companies is less loaded less expensive vehicles. Cooperation is how we'll make the best future.
Need those chargers. Looked at the existing CCS network and for the places we road trip to they are pretty sparse. So, here's to Rivian building out their network and not going under while doing it. Because this truck and the SUV look awesome. I want them to succeed.
Tesla should be opening up their network relatively soon, although they did receive a fair amount of backlash when teasing this decision, so who knows when they will but they will eventually

"If you've got 70 grand burning a hole in your pocket..."
Well, that's me out, then!
I was so hoping for this after seeing your Ford video, awesome they gave you enough time to really try this. Awesome as always!

It makes no sense to have multiple parallel charging networks for each manufactures.
They essentially are. Tesla is the only proprietary plug. So every EV on sale now other than Tesla can charge at every charger except Superchargers.

@@WildWest144 in Europe an EV is significantly cheaper to run than an ICE car. I don't know how it compares in the US or elsewhere where fuel duties are lower but if you're interested go do some reading on that. Try to get price per mile figures for comparable vehicles that would suit you, I think you might be surprised. :)
Oh, and most people most of the time only "tinker" around their own area. The vast majority of trips can be done in existing EVs charged only at home.
@@WildWest144 Well, let's find out. We'll assume your car gets 45 mpg and my EV gets 3 miles per kWh. Obviously some EVs do better than that, as do some gasoline cars.
Price: let's say gasoline is $3/gallon and electricity is $0.11/kWh. That's about right, where I live. Maybe not where you live. Plug in your own numbers, no pun intended.
100 miles of gasoline: 100 miles × $3 / 45 mpg = $6.66
100 miles of electricity: 100 miles × $0.11 / 3 mpkWh = $3.66
Saw my first Rivian on the road yesterday, looked fantastic. I drive a Tesla but am excited that by the time I'm in the market for a new car there will be so many more options in terms of truly good EVs to choose from.
This is going to be a good seller. Workers don't need gimmicks, they need functionality.
Except the price. This is like twice the price of a conventional well loaded pick up truck. So this is going to be a rich people toy more than a worker's vehicle. Also, the 4.5 foot storage bay is just not enough. Still really nice though.
@@misteratoz Yeah, companies will be getting the F-150 Lightning over this because of price and bed length. The Rivian is targeted at the many people who buy nice trucks but don't need to run a business out of their truck.

I really hope that this company succeeds and becomes a genuine Tesla competitor
As far as I'm concerned, they already are. Rivian developed the R1T in exactly the right way...slowly and with a laser focus on high quality and real world functionality. Tesla is known for rushing models to market that aren't ready for prime time and their build quality is suffers as a result.
The is a rumor that this year will be an IPO...
They're already discussing a new factory, so it seems like they're doing good right now
I have zero doubt that they will. Being backed by Amazon and Ford guarantees it.

Yup. Whoevers the big wig for transportation in the US should have already brought them together for a solution tbh.
In Australia it’s standard (Teslas have a Type 2 AC charger and CCS2 DC fast charge like most electric cars). I think it’s probably the same in Europe.

Haha Americans and their guns.
The locking sound being literally a birdo I thought was great. Blends into the surroundings you’ll probably find yourself in

This is plenty big enough to bring the whole family, provided you don't have an army of children. Typical nuclear family of 4 fits quite easily in this with camping gear, no question. And if it tows 11,000 that's not a concern either. A Ram 1500 caps out at 8300lbs of towing capacity.

I legitimately enjoy this truck a lot more than I thought I would.
And I'm not even a truck guy!

My mom’s 2000 Oldsmobile Silhouette Premier minivan also featured a compressor in the rear with a long hose for us to use. Usually was used for our bicycle tires but was strong and long enough to pump up car tires as well. Pretty cool to see that here.
That’s a shit car
I’m really digging the everything and the kitchen sink, but that being said, the Ford F150 lightning with the true massive front storage and electrical capabilities win it for me.
Fair enough - they're clearly going for different market segments. But if you're talking about lockable storage accessible directly from the outside, you have to factor in Rivian's gear tunnel to supplement the front storage.
That said, it amazes me that EVs have had front trunks for years and it took Ford to come along and notice that you may as well have it open from the front and not just from above.
@@ps.2 They’re really not going for different market segments, and will be directly competing as electric truck offerings
If you buy a TV/computer/phone/tablet/game console today, you can know with certainty that it'll be either better or cheaper tomorrow. At some point, if you want the thing, you have to just accept that, and buy the thing.
(Also, for cars, you can sometimes hedge your bets with a lease.)
That storage hole in between the back tires and the back doors looks like a GREAT place to put a body, or any other human sized luggage

I would buy one of these in a heartbeat if the price was lower. I think the biggest hurdle for EVs to truly succeed is the pricing. Great and really cool vehicles out there but still WAY too expensive for the common man.
Yep. Cost is my inhibitor here. But at least you get quality.
Sadly enough if you really look at a compreblely equipped truck form most other manufactures you are looking ant roughly the same ball park in pricing. what needs to happen at all these EV companies is less loaded less expensive vehicles. I mean the average person has no need for 0 to 60 in blah blah seconds bragging rights. ultamatly we also need to see the elephant in the room and get to work on our broke ass infrastructure so the power grid at lest in the states can handle all the EV that are going to become more and more popular very soon.
