From what I can see the R9 is a bit more serious and the xsr900 gp is a bit more cool factor, but a professional comparison would be interesting. Very similar bikes.
1-The engine definitely should have been at least 20hp more power. 2-The gap at the cylinder head in the middle of the bike looks really cheap. You can see through it when you look. Even the R3 doesn’t have anything like that. 3-The rear swingarm should have had a design that suits a race bike. 4-Yamaha really needs to give up on this single lens headlight fantasy they've been using in the middle. If they placed dual headlights below like on the R1, it would have been much better.

Great review. This was the first I've heard of the R9 even though I thought they should make one. Interesting why Yamaha can only get 119 hp from their 900cc triple when MV Agusta can get 147 hp from their 800cc triple. With the same weight as my Superveloce
They don't want to lose the T in MT. You have to rev the MV to about 10k rpm before it starts making more power than the cp3. Below that and in the real world the mt is more powerful.
"They can only get" Because they have decided to. Not because it's limited. The aftermarket racing development has pushed the CP2 to north of 100 horsepower. Because they decided to.
Because it's Yamaha, a mass producer. They never set a different production line for an engine with different camshafts/crank/pistons/valves etc.. Instead they build the same engine and swap it in different bikes.
I’m all for innovation and improvements over time. That’s the only way we can get better. However with that said, it’s still a sad day seeing another knife in the 4 cylinder 600/1000cc era. Especially the bikes pre ABS, traction control, electronic throttles, lcd/tft displays, etc. Wish we could still get fresh bikes without all the fancy stuff. Guess it’s just a bitter sweet time for bikes for me.
I love how everyone on here crying about you don't need 150+ whatever hp for the street while driving cars with power that will easily get your license taken from you. Just because you don't need doesn't mean you don't want. I want a gsxr1000r. I don't need it.
Yep,.....100hp & 100ftlb of torque, 385lbs For us "Mericans" is a magical recipe for a great asphalt-eater! Wait,.....I think we should be able to extract more power from this engine 40hp?....Not unheard of right?....Imagine that...
I think it meets all the specifications it's supposed to. I too was hoping they'd create a second specification for this CP3...one that is proprietary to the R9 with like another 10 hp. BUT... if this bike falls into a MotoAmerica racing category or some common racing club, what that will mean is there will be racing development for this powertrain just like there's been racing development for the R7, GSX-8R, RS660 and the like. I know this CP3 can take the power, people were turbocharging the 847cc version without problems. Anyway, doubt I'll be buying the R9, more interested in a XSR900 if they migrate the updates from the '24 MT.
Id love to see this made compatible with a2 license, just like the mt09. Also i think it would bring good competition to the ducati supersport 950, this being the only big engine a2 compatible sportbike.
With it sharing similar characteristics as the other 900s in the range, personally I’d lean towards the xsr900gp if they released it this side of the Atlantic over the r9. It just doesn’t seem like it did enough to stand out
I tried my dads tracer and that engine pulls. It keeps pulling where my SV650 starts to go easy. It jumps off like a light twin and keeps pulling where a twin would go real anemic at high rpn
Only thing I can think is the Euro spec version is supposed to be slightly different due to emission regulations but I don’t think that warrants such a high increase in price
Everyone complaining about this bike, what were you expecting them to do? Everyone has been asking them to put the cp3 in a sportbike. Now they do that, and it's not good enough? No one says the mt09 is underpowered, so why would they have given this more peak power while sacrificing low and midrange?
A little bit more exciting yeah more radical colour schemes like the Anniversary R1 & then it would be absolutely perfect!!👌🏻👍🏻 So fingers crossed & i will be ordering one but not with these colour choices!!😬😔
If Triumph dont follow this exciting development some dedicated Triumph fanboys are going to move elsewhere. For me as a road bike this level of power, torque, weight and trick looks (excluding that exhaust) plus price make it an extremely interesting proposition - well done Yamaha.
Design: I understand the idea of integrating the winglets, referencing MotoGP. Yet, it seems they detract from the sleek, streamlined design of yore. Yamaha's previous designs, to me, always embodied razor-sharp aerodynamics slicing through the air, paired with a nearly skeletal frame for ultimate lightness and nimbleness. Performance: The aerodynamic function of the winglets likely doesn't apply until after achieving higher than highway speeds (like most aero on vehicles), but I understand the functional inspiration from MotoGP. The CP3 is seemingly identical to the XSR and MT09, which is a bit underwhelming considering the primary purpose of this platform. Features: They're the same as the MT-09 and XSR which is not that surprising. Maybe a few features that apply specifically to the track, but again, I imagine *most* riders would not extract full potential anywhere else. Overall: I was excited for this announcement even though I don't see myself getting back in this genre. But my feelings are quite dampened after this report. I liken this bike to being that bridge between road compliance and track aggression, attempting to achieve a balance. However, that balance comes off as a compromise of both. But in the end, I think it comes down to each rider's goals.

Nice little bike. A tad heavy and a tad expensive. I'd wait for the new V4 R1 MotoGP derivative coming soon. (hopefully) I like the integrated winglets. Bike looks good in black.
My thoughts on winglets are: exactly zero people outside of professional racers and extremely high level amateur racers will ever notice a difference, so why bother when winglet’s are often at a detriment to aesthetics… I’m very happy Yamaha actually made this bike, but I think they botched the front end pretty bad. Looking at it, it feels too tall and too far forward. Maybe they’ll change it for the future. After the r3 was kinda ugly, and now it’s arguably the sleekest looking beginner bike on the market,

For about half of them, the thing they ride most is their keyboards. They all whine about wanting "a real supersport" but only a few will actually buy a new one. "Real" supersports only still exist for racing homologation.
if you want to ride fast, track is the way, took me years to figure this out
if you want to test your "stayin' alive" skills, ride on the road, it's no shit one of the most dangerous places i've spent time in and i've skydived, joined the army (infantry), attended anti-islamist talks just to start
@@RobertJones-pm3zk no I think people are just sick of manufacturers touting new models but it’s literally just an mt09 with fairings and clip ons.
If you want to ride on the road just buy mt09. In 99% scenarios it will be a better option. If you want to race (even on street) buy r1, r9 is just mt09 with fairings.

Not sure if the looks are good or not...
I really wish those winglets were optional... Or just removable at least...🤔
Love it or Hate it design !!! But I love it btw.
winglets are cancer
all winglets are replaceable. hence removable. the void left will no doubt have a part to fit or maybe not needed. With the winglets on though you’ll see a .011 lap time improvement so Yamaha says you need them.
Nobody cares about 0.011 seconds on the road...
I would say those winglets are a totally pointless thing ever copied from MotoGP...
@@viasevenvai they dont Look removable. It seems like they are integral part of front fairing.
I wish it had a bit more relaxed riding position
.like the CBR650R...so that more people can daily it, or they could have made one R version and a Non R version for the Road.
Not just that, a lot of sport bikes had less extreme riding positions yet were monsters on the track. Even ducati started relaxing their riding positions on the newer bikes. A lot of race bikes tend to be modified for rider comfort too, if you're comfortable (to a point) you'll be able to hustle the bike better
most of new bikes has too hard seats, compared to the older ones, for the looks
I’m in Australia and have 1.5 years left of my lams restrictions. Have done nearly 30k on my 2017 cbr500r and have been planning to get a ‘busa once off my restrictions, but as soon as I saw the r9 has cc (I ride mostly on freeway) and I love it’s looks it’s now a serious contender.
i'm not the fan of the wiglets in the r9 ngl, looks kinda dorky imo
Hopefully there are aftermarket fairings without them in the future.
When I see someone on the Internet badmouthing winglets on motorcycles - i know for sure that he (or she) is slow and ignorant rider. Because fast and competent riders knows how extremely important and irreplaceable winglets are for high speed stability and maneuverability of the bike - they're absolutely CRUCIAL. Winglets make bike many times more stable and maneuverable at high speeds. But slow and ignorant riders doesn't know that because they don't ride fast enough to feel that. Oh, well...
@@Rex_Payne It's more of an aesthetic thing. I am not a fan of how they look.
@@needler117, see, that's exactly what I'm talking about: you don't even realise that winglets are NOT an aesthetic thing of fashion. They are purely engineering device created specifically to improve motorcycle's handling. And they do precisely that, and very effectively.
@@Rex_Payne No I get that, I am saying I don't like how they look plain and simple.
So I should keep my Zx6R... Got it!

@@markoarkaina8656 They're literally the same price.... every 600 is $12k. Literally the only thing you might need to upgrade on this bike is Suspension like any bike if you ride hard or heavier rider. This bike also has more features.

As a Honda hater, I say the Honda still looking classy but the ZX-6R (and most Kawasakis for that matter) look like the abortion of a one night stand between a Deceptacon and a Praying Mantis !
You missed the White and red color variant :D I was waiting for this bike, that's why I didn't buy the R7 but now that it's unveiled....I think I'll go for some other with better looks

Whenever people talk about the r6 why do they act like the fact that you had to rev that bike to get the most out of it was a burden. A more extreme riding position is great for the track, I have an 848 with rearsets, etc, but to ride out for a few hours with your mates, a more relaxed riding position is far better in my experience.
I like the look of the winglets, although they are pretty unnecessary for most of us.
I wish when "wet weight" is quoted, whether fuel is included or not, should be stated. 14kg of fuel is a big difference.
Good review. The R9 will be a track weapon with an exhaust and tune. People moaning that it's not an R6 should just go and buy a used one. Or if they want more power buy a second hand R1.
Always found the R1 to be just a bit more than I needed and I wasn’t happy with the R7 on a lengthy test ride just not into parallel twins I’m an old school inline four or new school three. One change for me would be a smoked higher windscreen and that’s it. Can’t wait to check one out. As much as a CBR 1000 R-RR Sp appeals to me financially this is within my reality. Must get a ride on one in the spring
I hope they make a comparison between the R9 vs the XSR900 GP on track
At least you get the GP to even compare to the R9. Unless Yamaha US pulls a last minute surprise, we don't get the XSR900 GP. 😢
From what I can see the R9 is a bit more serious and the xsr900 gp is a bit more cool factor, but a professional comparison would be interesting. Very similar bikes.
Same weight as a cbr1000rr blade 😂
1-The engine definitely should have been at least 20hp more power.
2-The gap at the cylinder head in the middle of the bike looks really cheap. You can see through it when you look. Even the R3 doesn’t have anything like that.
3-The rear swingarm should have had a design that suits a race bike.
4-Yamaha really needs to give up on this single lens headlight fantasy they've been using in the middle. If they placed dual headlights below like on the R1, it would have been much better.
as a yamaha true fan, i tried to make my eyes and mind positve and repeatly gently seeing, scanning every inch of this bike shape.
dear yamaha, you need to hire your previos designer again..
Had a test ride of the MT09 while owning MT07. For a new guy like me the performance should be more than okay and the low rev power make it usable on road as well. Seem to be a good option. I just wish winglets were optional or removable.
That looks soooooooo good.
Saw a dude on instagram complaining about the sound of the CP3, just shows you can never please everyone, even an engine that sounds and is absolute mega will have people that dislike it

It is very good in terms of maintenance/economy because the euro regulation is met and the engine is unified, so it is very unfortunate that if you look at the output, you will only see the partial aspects. Great review. This was the first I've heard of the R9 even though I thought they should make one. However, I figured they would make the ergos more for street riding, like a faired MT-09, the same Suzuki did the GSX 8S/8R. Us elderly sport bike riders may have trouble with it. I'll stick with my 8R which is the best bike I've ever owned, and that's many. Thanks.
as someone who owns an R1, i’ll take it.
swap the horrible exhaust for something more traditional styled exhaust and it's pretty perfect for what it is.
0:50 12th thing you need to know: What’s the replacement cost of the part of the fairing with that “wing”, for when you break it off? 0:59

A modernized version of the 1993 model and give it 1993 ergos too, I don't want a torture rack on wheels.
OEM's need to start looking a little in their past when trying to move to the future and think about what products and options took them to where they are today.
yamaha has never really done anything that stands out, especially as far as body design is concerned, but this new r9 looks quite nice. im happy they went out a little bit and took a risk with the winglets. (i like winglets)
So the R1 does not look unique and good?
You might change your mind after you drop the bike. They're completely impractical for the streets and just an extra cost for fashion.
Interesting why Yamaha can only get 119 hp from their 900cc triple when MV Agusta can get 147 hp from their 800cc triple. With the same weight as my Superveloce
They just pushing the motor much harder, much stronger engines components. Their a reason the MV costs way more.
They don't want to lose the T in MT. You have to rev the MV to about 10k rpm before it starts making more power than the cp3. Below that and in the real world the mt is more powerful.
"They can only get"
Because they have decided to.
119 bhp from the cbr600rr and zx6r, expected a bit more from the 900. Ducati twins in the 800-900 range make heaps more power.
I wish more bikes would come with the underbelly exhaust as the R9

I’m all for innovation and improvements over time. That’s the only way we can get better. However with that said, it’s still a sad day seeing another knife in the 4 cylinder 600/1000cc era. Especially the bikes pre ABS, traction control, electronic throttles, lcd/tft displays, etc. Wish we could still get fresh bikes without all the fancy stuff. Guess it’s just a bitter sweet time for bikes for me.

Yep,.....100hp & 100ftlb of torque, 385lbs For us "Mericans" is a magical recipe for a great asphalt-eater! Wait,.....I think we should be able to extract more power from this engine 40hp?....Not unheard of right?....Imagine that...
He said it weighs 430lbs though.
Did I see redline at 10.5k????🤨
Id love to see this made compatible with a2 license, just like the mt09. Also i think it would bring good competition to the ducati supersport 950, this being the only big engine a2 compatible sportbike.
