Mr. Hicks, I'm in my 84th year and back in the 50s waterskied on the Old Tar River, 5 feet deep and 50 feet wide at the falls. Never knew there was a song about her. Thank You
If you ever street perform and people who try to ignore you start walking in time with the rythm despite trying not to then you know you're doing well ha ha
Enjoyed all of it! Loved the fire, the playing, the singing, and the tambourine. I've enjoyed your channel all year Clifton and wish you all the best for 2023 😀
Thank you Cliffton, I don't want to make your head any bigger...but your music is absolutely what I've been looking for my whole life. Damn. It's my time machine...
That puts me in a place that makes me feel like Im back in my childhood days, treking around where Whitewater Creek meets Gingercake Creek. In Fayette Ga. Its mighty good feeling. I'm glad for you.Thank you.
Honestly couldn't have asked for a better start to the new year. Thank you Mr. Hicks for the inspiration to pick up this beautiful instrument and the work that you do spreading its wonderous joy for the world to see!
Nothin like that real Hicks Sound, sittin by the fire! Kind Thanks Clifton! That Fine Banjo! It rarely gets better, the true wealth! Many Blessings! DaveyJO in Pennsylvania
Keeping the fire going still i see. Keep at it Mr Hicks. If you don't its not a guarantee others will. Thats the thing I hate about society, they think "someone will do it" but never "I can do it"
Old tar river lyrics as sung here Way down in North Carolina, On the bank of the old tar river, I walk down from Alabamy Just to see by dear old Fanny Coon and the opossum got in a fray Fought all night till next day Coon broke away and cut for the holler Opossum said guess I gotta foller The wound up at the top of a hill Possum went in for the kill He grabbed the raccoon by the tail Made him wished he’s ridding on a rail Well long came a man with the great big dog Possum cut for the hollowed log When the raccoon seen that man Up a tree that raccoon ran Coon dog looked and he sniffed all around He knew that coon left the grown When he barked right up that tree Raccoon said you can’t catch me boy My song is sung, I must leave you When I’m gone don’t let it greave you First through the window then through the door I looking for my old banjo
I sort of like the Raccoons! I used to jokingly call myself the "Coonmaster", as every-time I had a subtle impression and walked outside, there'd be two raccoons on the oak tree outside of my house. I'd say "Greetings from the coon master!," one of them would chuckle (behind), the one up front suppressed a subtle smile, and gave me the forward arm gesture (with the side head turn look), I was genuinely scared! haha!. Of course, they did not appreciate me referring to them in this way, though they were partial to me!. One of them ran up the stairs and climbed the wall a day later, making a lot of noise, I thought I was being invaded! All I saw was the faint shadow of a raccoon slowly peer through the window.. She then smiled. hissed in a familiar sort of way, and gave me the claw scratch gesture...
Can you please do a lesson on tar river and stagolee (a little more in depth on the two finger part) please two of my most favorite songs Love you and everything you do
Happy new year and big hug from Portugal!!! I’ve met your channel 3 months ago and I’ve been watching and learning with your videos everyday. Thank you for the great artist and person you are!!!
Good job Mr Clifton. How about one for us swamp rats, " Way Down Yonder on the Pasquotank" Way down yonder on the Pasquotank, the bullfrogs jump from bank to bank" all I can remember of it!
You do have an Americans heritage! Old time is a mix of British and African music. Your culture is just as important to this genre. So, in my book, you have American heritage
You got the voice of an old, old soul my friend. God really blessed you. Thanks for these. Man, old Pretty Polly sent shivers down my spine. I wonder if Cobain wrote Polly based on that old tune?
great clif, as ever..I've just moved back to Jacksonville. Would love to make it up your way soon or connect if you drop down. Know any fiddler's and/or frailers down this way? Cheers, bud.
I've seen'em fight in trap cam footage, and usually the raccoon was running away. I think possum mouth is pretty intimidating looking. They're pretty even in a fight. I think they mostly just avoid one another.

Cozy fire in a cozy room with a cozy performance for friends.
You were locked in 😂 awesome playing
Such a beautiful Bango. ❤ I like to close my eyes and picture my pawpaw playing. Except my pawpaw sounded just like Hank Williams Sr.
Dude...Clifton....I'm a little drunk...but this is the most American music I have ever heard! Beautiful version brother!
You know the music is good when your foot starts magically tapping by itself.
If you ever street perform and people who try to ignore you start walking in time with the rythm despite trying not to then you know you're doing well ha ha
Happy new year, my boys and me just listened and my 1 yr old was “dancing” to the tune
Dancing like Aaron?
That was Awesome ! Can you imagine everyone's boots and shoes slamming on the wood floor dancing to that one ..
Thank you for helping preserve this tradition, this music, these instruments, and these songs.
Perfect mellow tone for kickin' back by the 🔥
It'd be awesome if you released this on an album 🙏
Surprised you could rest your elbow on the stove that long 😅

Mr. Hicks, any chance we could get some Appalachian Orthodox chants/songs for the brothers out here in Tennessee
Old tar river lyrics as sung here
Way down in North Carolina,
On the bank of the old tar river,
I walk down from Alabamy
Just to see by dear old Fanny
Coon and the opossum got in a fray
Fought all night till next day
Coon broke away and cut for the holler
Opossum said guess I gotta foller
The wound up at the top of a hill
Possum went in for the kill
He grabbed the raccoon by the tail
Made him wished he’s ridding on a rail
Well long came a man with the great big dog
Possum cut for the hollowed log
When the raccoon seen that man
Up a tree that raccoon ran
Coon dog looked and he sniffed all around
He knew that coon left the grown
When he barked right up that tree
Raccoon said you can’t catch me boy
My song is sung, I must leave you
When I’m gone don’t let it greave you
First through the window then through the door
I looking for my old banjo
Time machine..
This sounds so cool, impressive how you can split your focus 3 ways

They're one of my favorite animals. Like a dog with human hands. Very special.
@@CliftonHicksbanjo you should search on youtube ""The Pied Piper of Raccoons" - Eddy Lawrence" its a small video but you might like it haha
A damn charming performance Cliff. I second other folks request on an Old Tar River tutorial. Absolute banger. Keep doing what you're doing.

Thank you for another wonderful tune, Clifton. All the best wishes for the new year!
Good one.
Clifton, thank you so very much for all this wonderful music. Have a great new year !
Just wish I had an American heritage now and not an English background. You and the Kempters have got me into Bluegrass..
My Mum tried years ago ♥
You do have an Americans heritage! Old time is a mix of British and African music. Your culture is just as important to this genre. So, in my book, you have American heritage
This isn’t bluegrass lol
Nice!
Very good 👌Happy New Year!!
All the best Clif! So many cool videos coming out today I love it 🙂
Dude!
Great as always. Happy new year.
Happy New Year! Thanks for your music Clifton. Keep it up brother

Where do you get your antique banjos? Where can we get them?
They are hard to find. This one came from an antique collector in Boston, and now belongs to an engineer in North Carolina.
This is awesome.

@@CliftonHicksbanjo Fair enough. You have provided so much good free content- Its about time I become a patron. See you over there.
Id love to see what your kick drum setup looks like!? I want to add percussion.
That's a tambourine in a pillow case tied to my foot.
❤❤❤
Cliff i love this song so much, also the quality of your video is top marks new camera?
Camera is a Canon M50 with RODE shotgun mic mounted atop.
How many banjos do you own? Great video, as always.
I own two. The rest all belong to private collectors/dealers.

больше напоминает тюрскую лютню звук не совсем естественный для банджи по другому немножко аккорд переделай
