Many steps, much precision, as you show how music's made.......gourd, pegs, skin, shellac -- excrement of a beetle -- and garnet flakes......Helmut Rheingans has such enormous talent, and his speaking voice is so musical. Throughout the film, the tunes played on gourd banjo are wonderful, and the way the film's put together is a work of art, with that lovely banjo gourd music accompanying the process of banjo creation. i love when the daughter sang the A and Helmut tuned the banjo to her voice and started playing. There is so much love in every minute here. And when the daughter -- (is that Anna?) -- played at the end, it had the feeling of a legacy, a gift stretching across generations, full of light. Thank you for creating this film.
This was inspiring ! I am a luthier and have gourds growing but have only used them for decorative bowls and pots. A gourd banjo is on my list of projects for next year’s gourd crop. Thank you!
I didn't know one could make a Banjo with a popadom! Nor that there are cat luthiers, but I am very impressed with your work Anna and Helmut! Sauber gearbeitet!
Beautiful. I have made a gourd banjo about 3 years ago. Making another one and looking at any insight I can get from YT videos on build process. This one was exquisite to watch.
Now do one for the bansitar! :) Thanks for making this, what a treat to see a master in his shop, and even play the instrument. Y'all are a very talented family.
It was wonderful to be given a little window into such a musical family - I feel quite envious of such talent but I love being able to listen to the music that is produced.
Just brilliant... Such a beautiful instrument AND (.....) Such beautiful sisters just got this crusty old electric guitar plunker's heart a poundin' (D'ya thimk it could hold metal strings?) Thanx Rheingans Family ...such great sounds as well (!)
That was really lovely, everything about your video! I’m never got to spend time with either of my grandpas and so would have loved to do something like this as they were both very handy. Your father is very talented and so are you! Absolutely wonderful! ❤️
Hi Cristobal, it depends but Helmut’s banjos start at around £400 (basic beginner model), although my model is a different one which cost £895, it depends what you are looking for… cheap Chinese factory banjos can be found online for about £150
Such a pleasure to watch this marvelous process :=) What went into the water when the skin was being stretched? And what was the white material used in the fret markers at the end? I habe a dream of doing this myself one day and this looks like a wonderful model to follow
you don't talk about what you did around the rim of the gourd before attaching the head. It looks like you added some type cushioning where the tracks went in.
Shop cat was supervising LOL
Cat inspection works very well!😸😼😸

A gem! Beautifully filmed and edited. I love that long sequence of skilful and exact steps demonstrated by Helmut’s craftsmanship.

It’s a bit of “Sandy river belle” a common old time tune
