Love banjo/ old time full stop . However Mr. Clifton Hicks should be in the National Archives . Could anyone provide a more complete history or working compendium of " the Art " ?
What a cool take on this song! It's really great to hear a version that is still being passed around by actual oral tradition. I presume that's what's going on here, as your description says you picked it up from George Gibson, who I understand is your mentor and who learned songs orally, himself. Fun Fact: according to newspapers at the time, Lee Shelton was known about town as "Stack Lee," though he was referred to as "Stag Lee" a minimal amount of times. Top notch, Clifton, and thank you for sharing.
Great job, cinematics are also getting better. This one sounds much (if not completely) alike with the melody from your rendition on ''Black Bottom Blues''.
Love it! Clifton, what old-time banjo would you recommend for a beginner who can't make a huge investment? I'm looking for something very traditional but I don't know where to start--looking to learn clawhammer! My goal is just jamming and singing on the front porch; I don't need anything fancy.
Great job! Love your style! Do you play The Blacksmith? Know how to get a lesson or tab? I’m new to clawhammer and you are a great resource for us beginners!
There are so many different variations of this old tune I grew up on the version done by Lloyd Price in the late fifties my mom used to play that song all the time growing up then there's also the one done by Nick cave done in the style of murder ballads anyways this variation reminds me of the version I heard by Uncle Dave Macon and his fruit jar guzzlers, anyways great channel
Man, awesome playing, I love your style!! Also, I don’t know if you’ve got a Christian background or not, but I just wanted to share the gospel with you. One day we will be judged by the Ten Commandments by God. God’s standard for us is very high. For example, Jesus said if you so much as look at a woman with lust, you have committed adultery with her in your heart. That leaves us all guilty, huh? God doesn’t want us to go to hell. That’s why we all must repent and trust in Jesus. Jesus took the punishment for us on the cross and rose again, defeating death. Again, love the playing, brother! God bless you.
Does anyone else automatically hit the Like button before Clifton's video even starts? You just know it's going to be excellent.

The gunshot sound effect tapping the head was a nice touch. Is that banjo have flush frets? Your slides were slick as butter!
I just try extra hard to make smooth sounding slides. 😜
