Way down in North Carolina On the bank of the old Tar River, I walked there from Alabamy Just to see my dear Aunt Fannie! Coon and a possum got in a fray They fought all night until next day, Coon broke away and he cut for the holler Possum said I guess I gotta foller! They wound up at the top of a hill The possum went in for the kill, He grabbed the raccoon by the tail Made him wished he's ridin' on a rail! Along come a man with a great big dog Possum cut for the hollow log, When the raccoon seen that man Up a tree that raccoon ran! Coon dog looked and he sniffed all around He knew that coon had left the ground, Then he barked right up that tree Raccoon said you can't catch me! My song is sung now I must leave you When I go don't let it greave you, First through the window then through the door I's lookin' for my old banjo!
I'm a musician but I have nothing to do with banjo. I do classical, jazz, and Nordic folk music. I find your videos so fascinating, like time travel to a culture that diverged from my own several generations ago, but is still fairly closely related. Thanks for sharing so much of yourself here. I don't think I ever would have gone down this highly interesting rabbit hole without coming across your channel. Oh, and this is FANTASTIC storytelling! You are not just a musician, you are a storyteller. Not enough musicians can do both!
Hi! I am new at playing, but obsessed with my banjo, I am an English woman living in Australia, where, it seems proper old banjos that have been touched by many hands and have history are scarce, like hens teeth as they say. I love your passion, the way you see it and describe playing makes absolute sense to me, my being an intuitive player and kinda feeling my way whilst picking up tricks and tips from the incredible players I find here. I watched the gourd sessions :) I love that instruments are made by hand and that its about rhythm and tone. I love that you sound like Jimmy Stewart too :) Thankyou so much for everything you share, I just wanted to say how much I appreciate it. PS This banjo sounds particularly FINE! whoah!
Lovely song. I'm more of a resonator guitar player but I'm learning so much watching your vids. HAPPY CHRISTMAS, for all of the smiles that you've brought the world, have a happy Christmas.
Absolutely incredible. As a huge fan of Civil War era music I absolutely cannot believe I have never heard this before! Any link to a location to purchase an authentic foot tambourine? MERRY CHRISTMAS!
Ya know I was thinking, I don't think I've ever seen a Banjo in a War movie, except maybe old ones about the Civil war, but nothing outside of that. Which makes me think, did American soldiers not play their Banjo in the trenches of WW1 or WW2 ?
The banjo's short thumb string is known to have existed before 1700; however, Sweeney may have been the first to add the heavy bass (4th) string to the banjo.
Sorry so emoji trigger happy. I turn into that sweet little aunt that sends you the super bling Christmas critters and angels sparkle glow, eye dazzle poker E-mail cards at Christmas. 😁😄 Merry Christmas and Happy New Year Clifton!
I've two over 110 year old gramophones, and can attest to how beautiful old things made of wood and some metal really sound. Today's music may be catchy but has no soul. Clifton brings outs the best from these incredible instruments
pretty much all banjos before 1880 were fretless or they had what we call flush frets now if you want to be able to tell where you are at on it a bit easier

155 years old banjo, just imagine how many songs have been played with it.
Way down in North Carolina
On the bank of the old Tar River,
I walked there from Alabamy
Just to see my dear Aunt Fannie!
Coon and a possum got in a fray
They fought all night until next day,
Coon broke away and he cut for the holler
Possum said I guess I gotta foller!
They wound up at the top of a hill
The possum went in for the kill,
He grabbed the raccoon by the tail
Made him wished he's ridin' on a rail!
Along come a man with a great big dog
Possum cut for the hollow log,
When the raccoon seen that man
Up a tree that raccoon ran!
Coon dog looked and he sniffed all around
He knew that coon had left the ground,
Then he barked right up that tree
Raccoon said you can't catch me!
My song is sung now I must leave you
When I go don't let it greave you,
First through the window then through the door
I's lookin' for my old banjo!
This may be my favorite clip of Clifton yet. Fine playing and singing, and a wonderful old banjo.
Hai! I like much also!'
i always seem to be finding my new favorite clifton tune this one is nuts
No better way to spread some Christmas cheer around than with a little bit of tambourine. Have a merry day. 🎄

Merry Christmas from your old stomping grounds in Florida. I see and jam your old teacher Ernie Williams regularly.

Musical history. Glad to see the flame hasn't died yet
Lovely song. I'm more of a resonator guitar player but I'm learning so much watching your vids. HAPPY CHRISTMAS, for all of the smiles that you've brought the world, have a happy Christmas.
I cross the Tar River every day to get to work, so I had to give this a listen. Can't get enough of your music, it's just too good 👍
Had a Great Aunt that played the banjo 🪕 and the Pump organ I remember her playing this for us ☺️👍🌹🌹🌹
Merry Christmas Clifton from Massachusetts!!
These early morning tunes/lessons/&history from you just do wonders for the way my day starts off. Thanks Friend. 😊

I love this video so much. Listened to the song at least a hundred times probably. I'm making a mountain banjo because of it. Should be done soon!
My friend you have inspired me once again that banjo sounds great and what a great tune!
Absolutely incredible. As a huge fan of Civil War era music I absolutely cannot believe I have never heard this before! Any link to a location to purchase an authentic foot tambourine?
MERRY CHRISTMAS!
This popped into my UA-cam feed and it’s one of the moments when I praise the algorithm! Excellent and beautiful. Thank you!
That was an excellent.song. I can hear the roots in that tune to 3 or 4 others.
I love American music. It is very real.
..Peace.
Yeehah great to see someone play a banjo without a plectrum. That’s my 10 cents worth anyway. Happy new year.
Man that's a purty woodpile. Great singing and playing too.
I love the Jingle Bell accompaniment Clifton!
Love the nylon string banjo! Think I need to get me one of those. Great performance, sir!
I don’t know why but this one stuck out to me. Merry. Christmas man. Great song.
Awesome rendition sir! Merry Christmas!
Merry Christmas from England 🇬🇧❤️ nice wood pile! Thank you for your music x
Dang this is a good one. Well played indeed, sir
Incredible. Wow!
Hot damn!!!! Awesome job as always Clifton 👏. I will be pullin up this pdf after work. Thank you sir
oh goodness clifton youve done it again
Ya know I was thinking, I don't think I've ever seen a Banjo in a War movie, except maybe old ones about the Civil war, but nothing outside of that.
Which makes me think, did American soldiers not play their Banjo in the trenches of WW1 or WW2 ?
Best back round yet 😅 Who doesn’t love some good fire wood 🪵 beauty performance 🙏🪕
Best Christmas present this year! Merry Christmas!
Flawless! You inspired me to pick the banjo up around 5 months ago and I'm enjoying every minute of it!
Excellent!!!
Merry Christmas to you and your family Clifton!
The tambourine tho
Pure awesomeness!! Thanks for posting this one!
So good!! Merry Christmas one and all. Thank you Mr. Hicks

Merry Christmas Y'all!
✝️⛪🔔🎄🕯️🦌🦌🛷🎅🤶🎁💝🎁
Love, warmth and happiness to all
sweet sound
new fave
Tar river North Carolina. Fish it quite a bit.
Brilliant job…vocal and playing…lovely old banjo too !…
Happy new year and thank you for the wonderful video Clifton Hicks!
🎄🎅 Merry Christmas 🎅🎄 Clifton my brother!! Hope your Holiday has been AWESOME! 🇺🇸💪🗡
i read somewhere it was Joel Sweeney who invented the idea of putting a 5th string on the banjo😊
The banjo's short thumb string is known to have existed before 1700; however, Sweeney may have been the first to add the heavy bass (4th) string to the banjo.
Awesome.
has a very unique sound. I think it comes from the strings, which look to be gut strings that are very low tension.
WHERE DID YOU GET THAT HAT🤠🐥
Mr. Hicks at the Wood Pile 🪵 😋
Oh that's good!
damn ma n you smoked this one!
Ol' Dan Tucker!
Dig it!
Sorry so emoji trigger happy.
I turn into that sweet little aunt that sends you the super bling Christmas critters and angels sparkle glow, eye dazzle poker E-mail cards at Christmas. 😁😄
Merry Christmas and Happy New Year Clifton!
God damnit your hitting the 2nd string twice with your thumb!
double double drop thumb, lol
love it! was it common in those days to have the foot percussion?
Other than plain foot stomping, no. But tambourines were popular.
Don't often see a minstrel style banjo with a resonator.
I've two over 110 year old gramophones, and can attest to how beautiful old things made of wood and some metal really sound. Today's music may be catchy but has no soul. Clifton brings outs the best from these incredible instruments
Wow!!! Incredible.
Your the best 👌
❤️
What type of shirt is that? The tan one
Thank You ! - You PERFECT a Grand Tradition.
sweet Jesus! Beautiful song, played well, where in the devil did you find that banjo? MT
It belongs to a friend, and is for sale.
Do you know how much he wants? I"m interested. thanks, MT
@@maineguitarists Anyone can email me at clifhicks@gmail.com for details.
Wow!!! A 'Fretless' Banjo... Now that takes more skill, but adds more versatility!!!!!
I dont play any fretless instruments! but I think it becomes easier when you get used to using your ears
pretty much all banjos before 1880 were fretless or they had what we call flush frets now if you want to be able to tell where you are at on it a bit easier
... and I didn't get you anything, for shame.
Thanks for sharing.
What Tuning do you use?
dGDF♯A
No racoon takes kindly to being grabbed by the tail. They hate that.
Will there be a lesson?

dGDF♯A. I always put my tuning and other details in the video description.
We know they won't be listening to mumble rap in 100 years
Straight up steampunk banjo lol
💃
Then Bells are the hook!
😀
You're more skilled at playing that foot tambourine than you are on the strings, pardner.
And that's saying something. 😅
Imagine if Clifton got together with Steve Martin.......
Their styles aren't really compatible.
Merry Christmas!
Merry Christmas!
