  • In this video we take the AutoEdit 2013 Jeep Wrangler Rubicon JKU and update the steering components with the full Metal Cloak heavy duty chromoly tie rod and drag link and the Rocksport steering stabilizer.
    This is a fairly easy installation and is a must when running big tires on your Jeep.

    Gave the Metalcloak a try from your review here. The only company I have purchased something from that called me and thanked me for my order and gave me a number to call for questions! Great service and great parts for sure! Thanks for everything you do here at AutoEdits.

    Completed this build thanks to you over the weekend. It is such a great upgrade. Took me a some time to install with removal of the worn out gear. Fork tool was a blessing. Instant difference with very smooth steering. Used your advise with looking down the outside of the wheel to temporarily align the front and it worked out great. My 2010 Rubicon JKU and I are super happy.

    I bought a used 07 JK X a little over a year ago and remember watching this video and looking at the price for this kit and thinking “jeez that’s pricey, I’ll never be there!” But here I am already ordered the track bar and about to order this kit myself! All MC’d out and working on suspension before I move on to my UD install. Love the channel and as the time passes I still find myself watching these videos for the info and just for the fun of it!

    Thanks for the great video. I hadn't planned on ordering anything from MetalCloak during their black friday sale, but this video sent me over the edge. Tie rod, drag link, and steering stabilizer just got ordered. I was just in your neck of the woods for Thanksgiving visiting family. I broke away on Sat morning and checked out DrinkWater Flats OHV by myself. It was cool. The 1st climb up the mountain from the road was a little intimidating, but my JKU did fine. Keep up the great video installs.

    Hey Jason, thanks for the inspiration to upgrade my steering components. I was at 59,000 miles and starting to get a little wobble from the steering wheel. After checking things out I found my tie rod ball joints were worn. I did order the metalcloak steering components rocksport edition. It all went in as easy as you showed on your video. The only thing I ran into was that I couldn’t properly center my steering wheel. The alignment shop dialed it all in. I really like the way the steering feels, and no shaking steering wheel. Couldn’t send you a picture. Otherwise I would. I’m driving a 2013 manual JKUR with a 2.5” Teraflex spring lift, a Teraflex monster track bar, Rancho 9000 adjustable shocks, and 35” B.F. Goodrich KO2 All Terrains. Can’t wait to get my rig in the dirt to see how that feels as well.

    Your Jeep build has been the inspiration for mine. So far I am running the MetalCloak 3.5” Game Changer (I did opt for the RockSport shocks), MetalCloak Overland fenders in aluminum, and 37” Toyos wrapped around Method Racing bead locks. I just added this steering upgrade to my MetalCloak wishlist. They need to thank you for the business!!

    Just did this Metalcloak tie rod and drag link install, along with a FOX ATS steering stabilizer. This video made it so straightforward Jason!
    Pickle fork separator didn’t work for me and I didn’t have the tool you used. Pitman arm separators I saw were too big for the space under the Wrangler.
    The one thing that did work easily for me was a 3/4 in. Ball Joint Separator I picked up from Harbor Freight. Off in less than a minute!

    Awesome video man! I love my MC products on my 2014 JKU Rubicon X. One thing unrelated. Get some Fluid Film and start drenching the underside of your jeep, the frame, inside the frame, everywhere, etc, with it every month or so. It'll keep it from rusting. It attracts, dirt and sand, but who cares. That stuff is easily rinsed off when you need to, and it's the underside of a Jeep, so again....who cares. Rather have dirt than rust. You take very good care of your Jeep, and even with that care, it's still rusting. (Damn Jeeps). The Fluid Film will keep it from doing that for a long long time if you stay on top of it. Take care dude!

    Another great vid Jason. Thanks! Scott ever recommend High steer drag and roll center raised trackbar bracket? Seems a lot of manufactures and forum posts make it sound like you need it to prevent bump steer and body roll with lifts 3 inches and up. You haven't had any issues?

    • @AutoEdits

    Hey Jason love the videos sir. Just lifted my Jeep and ordered the Tera flex kit just because I was able to get it a bit cheaper. But I was wondering your opinion on drop pitman arms. I get a ton of mixed opinions on them. Any advice would help. I also just installed those Tom Woods driveshafts you have in another video and man do they make a world of difference.

    • @AutoEdits
      @AutoEdits  6 років тому

      My thoughts on steering changes on this lift are to leave the stock geometry for now. 3.5" is right on the border... any higher and yes for sure on high steer but since I want to maximize my up-travel, that would be limiting.

    Great Video! I have a 2016 JK sport, 35 BFG, 3in Teraflex lift kit. I have what seems like a dead spot in my steering near center... you have to work the steering wheel left to right to maintain a sorta straight line. It drifts around on the streets a lot. Do you think the Metal Cloak Tie rod and drag link kit would solve that? Thanks

  • @Stuka87
    @Stuka87 6 років тому +2

    The factory tie rod ends are just junk. I think I went through 3 sets of each in my old JK. Its nice to see somebody has made some good HD ones, as very few company offer anything.

    Nice video and upgrade info .. Since you are doing a lot of off roading are you going to do any upgrade to your hood to improve the ventilation / airflow to cool your engine ?

    • @AutoEdits
      @AutoEdits  6 років тому

      Since installing the MetalCloak aluminum inner fenders, I haven't needed any more engine cooling and I've been off road in Death Valley last summer driving in 117 degree weather. I might put a more aggressive hood on but mostly for looks when I'm mall crawling... LOL

    Have you ever had that "Death Wobble" issue with your jeep?

      Yep, bumper upgrade again... my life with the Jeep has changed and parts need to accommodate that!
      I've never experienced that with this Jeep and I drive it really hard... on highway and off road. Even after my driveway alignment, the thing did the 120 mile freeway round trip on thanksgiving day like a champ!

    • @AutoEdits
      @AutoEdits  6 років тому

      I lift the front by the axle tube right next to the differential (center) and then put my jack stands under the ends. My buddy Fred jacks under the differential and lifts it high enough to account for the uneven lift. Hope that helps... Thanks so much for watching and saying hey!

    Hey Jason, Rick here again Thanks again for the info you gave me regarding the Core doors, I had to contact Bestop but everything worked out great!! This time I have a question concerning the steering upgrade, I noticed the Metalcloak tie-rod does not have chinch bolts at the adjustments to keep them from backing out.
    My question is, have you had any problems with alignment, since these chinch bolt don't exist. They appear to have lock nuts but I am concerned about vibration loosing up the lock nuts. I am a Metalcloak fan but when I talk to manufacturers, they tend to be bias to their product and don't give honest answers. Although I must admit Metalcloak has always been pretty up front and honest with me.

    • @AutoEdits
      @AutoEdits  2 роки тому

      Howdy and glad to hear about the bestop thing working out... I actually prefer the jam nut style over a clamp style and haven't really had any problem. After running the Rubicon trail, I had to use a crescent wrench to align the steering wheel a bit but that was one time several years ago. So I can still highly recommend the kit... still running it!

    Hey what was the length of your tie rod bar I'm doing mine right now and I forgot to measure

  • @TheRightLine
    @TheRightLine 6 років тому +3

    The rotation you noted in the tie isn't a good indicator of tie rod end (not a ball joint, they are in the end of the axle where the knuckles attach) wear. Instead lateral movement and up/down play are a better indicator. Definitely look like stout replacements and I like the double adjustment for wheel alignment.

    • @AutoEdits
      @AutoEdits  6 років тому +1

      You are correct and thanks for that! These were worn but I couldn't show the lateral movement with the tires off!

    Great Video! One question.. Why No Drag Link Flip Kit?

    • @AutoEdits
      @AutoEdits  6 років тому +1

      Thanks! Because I only went with the 3.5" lift the drag link flip would limit my up travel and so far the thing steers pretty good as is. Maybe with more lift or bigger tires it would help but for now I like it.

  • @steveharris736
    @steveharris736 5 років тому +1

    Hey Jason any updates on this setup...I know it's been a year on this steering setup and thinking about song it to my 3.5 dual rate metalcloak lift. Do you wish you would have went with someone else? Like yeti system. And do you think the metalcloak draglink flip would be useful on this setup? Videos are awesome brother been tuning in since you started this build

    • @AutoEdits
      @AutoEdits  5 років тому +1

      I'm REALLY happy with this steering stuff and with a 3.5" lift... it's not recommended to do the flip... kills your valuable up travel. I will look to eventually do a hydro assist but this has been great.

    Hey Autoedit! I've been looking for steering upgrades for a while, so this would be a great upgrade.
    I got a question for ya though. My steering has become very tight, almost as if I'm losing my power steering. I've got virtually the same setup as you, 37s, but with a 4" Pro Comp lift. What do you think is the issue?
    I thought my steering box was going bad, or couldn't handle the load I was putting on the box. Any thoughts?

    • @Strikerage
      @Strikerage 6 років тому

      Ps... For reference, I can't even do a full lock U-turn. I gotta stop, back up, then go forward to continue my turn.
      It's pretty aggravating. I keep thinking something is gonna break!

    • @AutoEdits
      @AutoEdits  6 років тому +1

      Hey! It sounds like something might be binding up in the steering somewhere but it's hard to know without seeing it and there is a good chance the steering pump could be failing. We are demanding more performance from those parts than they were designed to give... does it make a growling or howl from the pump? Synergy offers a really good pump and steering box upgrade.

    • @Strikerage
      @Strikerage 6 років тому

      autoedit - Thanks! I'll have to check that brand out. I gotta say I don't recall any noticable noise coming from my steering at full lock, but I probably wasn't paying close enough attention.
      The pump itself may just be going bad. The power steering goes in and out depending on the movement of the Jeep. The only reason I suspected the steering box was because it's OEM, and the outside is rusted pretty good.
      Thanks for the feedback!
