There's actually a number of species that are classified as "sardines," some of which are over a foot (30 cm) long as adults.

ahhh, I see now how his sail can be used to herd and direct the sardines, then he damages them with his spear and those damaged drop off the group and he dines on them, then follow up with a white wine.

The sail helps to herd the fish, but when multiple sailfish attack a large school each will flash their sail in turn to signal to the others that he is going to charge the fish ball. Sailfish take turns attacking so there is no chance of injuring each other by accident.

It probably ate most of them. They can only take so much. They slow down or get crippled. Those get picked off easily. Once they are schooled this tight it’s over. Especially if there is more than one.

I usually notice 3 sardine fish packed tightly into a small tin. I don't think any of these sardines would fit into any tins at all.

According to Wiki, one species of sardine, pilchards, can get up to 15.6 inches long, and live 25 years . . . as long as Swordfish don't move into the neighborhood, that is.
