Yeah it's not some bozo fumbling around his first time ever doing it making mistakes along the way. Great video, you can tell this guy does this for a living.
Thank you so much for this video. It was a huge help when my father and I replaced the alternator on his 2008 Odyssey this past Saturday. Honda sure did not make it easy for us D-I-Yers did they? Actually disconnecting the electrical connections and removing the alternator's two mounting bolts was fast and easy for me but physically getting the alternator out of the engine compartment - whew - that was a job! I thought that that was tough getting the old alternator out but then it seemed even harder to get the new one in there! The whole job from took the two of us about three or four hours. It would have taken probably all day if we did not have your video to show us exactly what had to be removed to make room under the hood. Even after removing everything, there just is not much space to work with. That A/C line really got in the way. Thank you again. Without your helpful video, I don't think that we could have done the job so quickly.
Very insightful of you to say that the poorly designed clamp never fully attached and stresses the alternator. I think that is exactly what happened to my wife’s vehicle.
Thank you for the video! In particular, I love that you included a quick diagnoses. Most videos just do the process, without actually talking about making sure you do the right thing. Cheers!
Thanks you. Sliding the new alternator into the lower bracket was the hard part for us. The arm that comes up has a metal insert sleeve that needed to be adjusted with some pliers in order for the new alternator sliding in place.
Getting the alternator out this way was not easy but can be done. So happy I watched this, thank you my friend would have taken me way longer with out this video!
I wish he would have spent more time with some big fancy intro and at least a ten minute description of what an alternator does, what bad ones look like, different kinds of alternators, what he had for breakfast, what he was planning for lunch, the color of the van and when they actually made the van, etc. All important stuff that other youtubers include in their videos. I was sort of confused as this video did not have all that other fluff. (catch my sarcasm here...lol) Actually, this was very very concise and excellently done!
Thanks for the helpful video. I just finished doing this to our Odyssey following your video. The one difference was where the bolt was to de-tension the serpentine belt. My bolt was beside the idler pulleys instead of on the pulley, using a 19mm or 3/4" socket. My only other complaint is that you make it look too easy. :)
Good instruction video. I replaced my 2006 Accord V6 before and it was the same method. I use Simple Green to wash the engine all the time. My Accord just made 350K miles and keep going.
About to do this job on my wife's vehicle. I had read that you need to take off fender and radiator and bunch of other stuff. But seeing this is awesome. Wish me luck!!
@@J1Warrior84 good luck bro, the most frustrating part is shimmying it out then the new one in. I found that letting it go where it wants to, and not being afraid to let is twist and turn, was the key. Once it's in the cavity it wasn't too difficult to spin it back and line it up right. Also be careful with the ac line, it's aluminum.
Thank you for the instructions. On the 2008 there was another wire connected, mechanical not electrical, on the back of the alternator. I also noticed the top alternator mount is adjustable.
Your video is great cuz if a mechanic looks up the labor time he will charge you way more to remove the bumper, radiator and other parts to get the alternator out instead of your much faster way. great video 👍
GREAT JOB with this very information and detailed how-to video. You're better than most when explaining the step by step and including important visuals. Hats off to you! Keep producing more!
Great vid but I wish you addressed the hydraulic tensioner issue on Honda Ody's - If you don't properly bleed/cycle it three times before installing belt - the bolt WILL break. When I first bought my Ody, the old owner had a mechanic friend change the timing belt who didn't know the procedure and that bolt broke on us less than 200 miles after it had been serviced. An reputable import shop I use was well aware of the issue and properly addressed the tensioner - and I now have another 95K miles on it no broken bolt (about to do timing belt.)
Seems like a really good video, but a little surprised that no one caught that the mistake with the pulley and belt. It’s actually a #19 that you have to use, and it’s not on the pulley you place it, it’s a belt removal stud that you can’t see in the video. Providing that is a 2007 EXL.
I think there are two different tensioners used on these odysseys depending on the VIN. One is a spring loaded tensioner with 14mm tension release on the pulley. The other is a hydraulic tensioner with two 19mm aluminum nuts moulded into the casting to release tension which are very easy to round off the corners and strip since they are aluminum.
MasterJack, what kind of torque wrench are you using? And did you find the Bosch alternator to be as reliable as the Denso (OEM) might have been? GREAT video BTW
Would the AC get messed up at all during this process? My brother in law just got his alternator replaced and now the AC isn’t working. But ran super cold before.
You can do it without affecting the A/C. It's possible the shop removed the A/C compressor to access the the alternator. If they opened an A/C line to do that, it would discharge all refrigerant.
Hi, what year model is this and is it exl? I have an 06 exl and was told a 19mm nut to loosen the tensioner is what’s needed not 14mm? Please advise thnx.
My alternator seemed to be dying then I drove it (bad idea) for 3 miles. The car started strong (I had just charged the battery the day before) the car stopped working altogether. Then the voltage dropped first to 8 volts, than to 0.0 volts. Could it have been that the alternator is good but the battery was acting up? Showing up a higher voltage so the alternator wasn't charging it and than crapping out? The last day it worked I took some measurements. When I turned on lights/ac/radio (while the engine was running) the voltage dropped to the battery voltage (12.8 or so). Could it have been the battery shorting out that kept the voltage low? The engine running with no extra loads the alternator got up to 13.8 volts I think, so it kind of worked. And the battery seemed to work as well. I think the initial cause must have been the battery and the alternator might have gone along with it. I'm going to fix it in the next week between work and stuff.
I'm not sure, I wasn't asked about it when I bought this one. Cylinder deactivation shouldn't change requirements for alternator amperage output. If it had the start/stop feature (car turns off at stop lights), they might bump up the amps for the increased number of start cycles on the battery.
@@MasterJacks Every auto parts site is asking me if 2007 odyssey has cylinder deactivation. There are 2 different alternators for the 2007 model. Maybe other years but I am just looking for this year.

Alternators do get hot, 170-220F is pretty normal. Higher than that, something is causing the alternator excessive/prolonged stress, typically high electrical loads such as a bad battery or high resistance (poor connections). I'd make sure all battery/alternator connections are clean and tight, then have the battery tested at the parts store. If all checks good, a bad bearing or internal fault of the alternator itself could be the cause.
