Despite being a complete idiot, in my eyes Richard is a great father and is very much of use to his family. (I should've dropped this on Father's Day lmao)

Okay, I just wanna be completely clear, the ONLY Richard doesn't, or should I say, CAN'T have a job, is because the fabric of universe literally starts to break if he has one. He literally isn't able to have a job because he isn't mean't to.

Despite being not so bright or mature, I do have to agree that Richard is still a good dad. He still really cares about his wife and kids, even if he doesn’t display the standard idea of what an average dad is supposed to be like. The only issue I really have with “The Deal” and its portrayal of Richard’s importance is that much of what he did as a parent throughout the episode isn’t displayed enough throughout the majority of the series. I know it’s meant to subvert the audience’s expectations of how important Richard actually is but I would have really liked to see them show Richard as a house husband :].
That episode where Gumball and Darwin were making fun Richard in front of their peers is a good example of how good a father he was. He felt so bad he stayed in the garage and sang a song about wanting to be their hero. When Gumball and Darwin were at that dump, he literally climbed a crane and nearly died trying to save them. He managed to help Gumball by giving him the courage to walk across the ladder over a pit.
Another thing I want to point out: Richard, unlike the other dumb dads, actually cares about his family, unlike Homer Simpson or Peter Griffin. In the episode "The Hero", Richard sings a song, about he was once Gumball's "giant hero" when he was little. This goes to show that Richard actually cared about his family, and made his dreams possible. Another moment, in "The Fridge", where Richard is stuck in the fridge, sitting in the ice cold, we can see the best memories of Richard, many of them being that of moments with baby Gumball and Darwin.. truly one of the best dads, and maybe he is lazy, but he seems like a lovable dad.
Richard is lazy but his parenting style is completely different than his wife Nicole. Unlike Nicole who's a massive control freak at times, Richard hardly lashes out to Gumball, Darwin and Anais and let's his children make mistakes. Richard's parenting style is unorthodox but he's actually a decent dad.
Just a reminder the universe was almost destroyed when Richard worked as a pizza delivery driver, and 2 the main reason when he is so dumb is because of his mother. Richard's mom made him scared of everything and didn't let him think for himself once, and because of that he can hardly think at all
Richard may be dumb and lazy, but he cares about his family and you can't say otherwise. He's not perfect. But considering what his own parents are like (his dad walking out of him and granny Jojo sheltering him to a point he couldn't develop common sense) Richard turned out to be pretty decent (And of course, he had some help from Nicole as well).
I appreciate how in the later seasons, there are moments where even Richard has to get a bit more seriously. His moment with helping Gumball escape the garbage hole is one thing, but i wanna highlight another one. Remember that episode where the boys can't use the computer until they get the password right?... & The Password is *"Anais",* who's the *"favorite child"?...* Because they think Richard was the one who put that password there (spoilers, Anais was the one who put that password there instead), they try to make Richard see the boys as their favorite child... By being obnoxious asswipes, even moreso than usual (which is saying a lot considering how bad Darwin & ESPECIALLY Gumball can get at points) & the neat thing is that at some point, Richard actually has enough of their crap & shouts at them, rightfully being upset at what they've been doing for the whole episode. Now, obviously, you should never snap at your kids that way (or control them by fear & vent your frustrations at them like Nicole does), but this is Richard we're talking about, he's NEVER been *that* genuinely upset before that scene... But when it actually happened here, it's treated surprisingly seriously & i kinda like that
I use to like Nicole and Richard as characters but nowadays I don't like them as much as I use to because of what they represent a misconception of a man and woman. For men it's the idea that they can act like an idiot most of the time and they won't have to worry about stuff like losing therr wife or children because they'll most likely be given another chance to change and improve. For women it's the ideas that it's ok for them to have violent tendencies and use violence to deal with various problems like the men in there life. I can admit Nicole and Richard have some great episodes focused on them and as a teenager I liked them, but as an adult I just find it hard to tolerate them a lot of the time. PS: The episodes that deal with there backstory are great because they explain who they became with prevents me from completely disliking them.
In an episode where Gumball, Darwin & Anais were accidentally left in a ball pit in the mall (which Larry had sold & shipped off even with kids still in said ball pit), Richard did EVERYTHING he in his power to save his kids and drop them off at school, all while simultaneously avoiding Nicole's wrathful scolding & suspicion. Numerous vehicles were stolen by Richard in the process, but given the situation he was in, he had no choice. He was in a hurry to save his kids, and them fatherly instincts were on MAXIMUM OVERDRIVE the whole episode.
I think the only reason why Richard is far is because when his dad left him he got depressed and ate food to cope with his depression (that’s what I think bcus I’m sorta depressed and I eat to cope with my sadness)
Let’s be honest the whole gremlin episode looked staged cause gumball Darwin and anais never act like this and it felt like he did this to prove a point
BOTH of the Watterson parents are infinitely better than their own. Richard has an insanely clingy mom and a deadbeat dad, and Nicole's parents pressured her to be great, and made her do like 50 extracurricular activities. All at the same time.
I mean, you can't blame him. His father was a criminal, and his mother was a protective, obsessed crazy woman who never let him think for himself, so whose fault is it really.
Richard is a g, the man while ludicrous does have a sound mind and knows how to relate to and handle his kids (though not great in taking care of them or leading leading them like Nicole)
Personally in terms if fathers the best one I know of, especially from CN is Greg Universe from Steven Universe, he's probably the most realistic portrayal I've seen in a cartoon, while he's not really the brightest bulb around he's not an idiot like like Homer or an aßs hole like, Buck Cluck from chicken little he's just normal, reminds me of flint lockwoods dad which is nice because so many dads in childrens media the Simpsons excluded for obvious reasons are just the dumbaßs dad trope and it's nice to see something that even reminds me of my own dad
having a dumb dad in general is never relatable, it was nice seeing dads like in king of the hill, or a dad like in johnny test, properly portrayed and written
Richard is not a perfect man or father, yet one of my favorite examples of his parenting comes from The Detective (season 4, episode 36). When Anais is badmouthing her brothers, Richard puts his foot down, and she corrects her behavior. On top of that, he plays along with her game and helps save Daisy rather than dismiss Anais's pain because he knows how much she means to her.
My dad is exactly like Richard. Except he doesn’t do any of the parenting, takes out his anger on his family like Nicole, and is overall just an anchor tied to our ankles.
He's dumb, gluttonous, and lazy, but he still cares for his family dearly and does whatever he can for his wife and kids Despite his many flaws, he is still a good dad in the end
If one side is controlling, the other side need to be a peacemaker. You can say he is lack competency, but she is also has rage problem. He let her become whatever she want and believe in her. Unlike her parents who are too strict and demanding. He is supportive and loving person. But I agree that he is not the type of person to be in charge/boss. Maybe if Richard gets into working, he will focus on his job and less time for the kids. It seems like he is not able to get a job due to internal suffering. If he is under intense pressure at job, Richard can lose himself and not be peaceful anymore. Maybe that's why his mom didn't want him to go on a date and get married. His mom is loving but too controlling. He can really say no to his mom. So this two is like platonic parents. There are two kids from them and 1 adopted. 1 is gumball that represented nicole. 2 is anais that represented richard. 3 is darwin which is important to make everyone happy. He is loving and caring like Richard. They live in simple life. Just look at the neighbor house. They live without kids and richer than watterson family. But only watterson family that has meaningful life aka better family. The center of this show is kids.
Well in The Deal, I think there is something to note about Richard's unorthodox parenting: he molded his parenting style to fit his kids rather than molding his kids to fit his parenting style. He essentially found an unorthodox parenting style to fit his unorthodox children.
Since I was young I’ve always known he was a good dad. Cos he rarly yelled at the kids (opposite of my dad) so even though he was a simpleton he really tried to be there for them. 😊

I like how they love the idea of bad fat loser father these days that they tried that with richard but everyone ended up loving him a lot
He had a job but he was fired
I mean he was literally destroying the universe with a job so it’s a good thing he was
He physically can't get a job because he isn't supposed to have one. He's breaking the canon.
Since you talked about a cartoon dad I suggest one other cartoon dad you should talk about is Bandit Heeler from Bluey. The best dad in the world.
Bill Green from big city greens too
0:53 I don't think Nicole "needs" what she needs is a competent husband, i.e a better husband.
THATS WHAT IVE BEEN SAYING
What is soundtrack playing at background?
Most underrated yt right here
Richard may be lazy but I still think he is a better parent as he is calmer, gentler and not menacing unlike Nicole
True actually Nicole is just bossy aggressive and harmless
He is Very much a better father compared to Peter Griffin. at least he shows love to his kids and wife.
Richard watterson isn't dumb because of his childhood when Richard was little his dad left him with his mother the mother had poor skills
He pretty much raised the children, which is why their smarter than their Mom
You kinda spund like Swoozie ngl
Well he had a job and it broke the universe 😂
Nicole deserved/deserves so much better honestly 😞
I remember that episode, it was hilarious 😂
