Let's be real, audio dramas are what saved Paul McGann's Doctor for a lot of people. The TV movie wasn't the worst, but he really gained a larger audience thanks to Big Picture-inspired stories.

The TV Movie was an above average Doctor Who Story, but it was an absolutely terrible way to introduce newcomers to the franchise. It was bogged down with explanations about the Doctor and the Master and Regenerations and the Tardis and there wasn't even any time travel or the scary aliens the show was known for.

A few personal notes about this audio:
    1. It's my personal favorite
    2. As an amateur baker, I've been wanting to try and make a plum pudding
    3. Before I looked up the cast, I thought Shaughnessy was played by James Nesbitt.
    4. I met Robert Sherman, the writer, at a convention a few years and I told him this was one of my favorite Doctor Who things ever. He was shocked by this. Not because he thought it was bad but because it was made so long ago that he thought people would have forgotten about it.

Speaking of solving problems with Yu-Gi-Oh, I did that in D&D once.
Having been sent to retrieve an item, we found it being argued over by a bunch of Beholder-kin. My character, a rogue, snuck up on them, but a poor roll meant that she got caught. After a failed attempt to convince them that she was a door-to-door Hell Spider salesperson, and "admitting" to her attempted scam them, she proposed a fair way to decide which of the arguing factions got the item.
See, I had made a joke about Yu-Gi-Oh being only comprehensible to eldritch beings, which the DM ruled canon.
My character, having been raised by her demon grandfather, just so happened to know what Duel Monsters was (and Warhammer, but that's neither here nor there). So she suggested a best of 5 Duel, which she could provide refreshments for. The Beholder-kin immediately agreed and pulled out their decks.
As this character was ALSO an established drug dealer, she spiked the refreshments, and she and our other rogue stole the item. Our bard also stole the most strategically important cards from each deck.
It's very in keeping with the rest of the campaign, which features such things as said "Hadozee" Bard, who might just be an orangutan from the real world and who has, CANONICALLY, seen every Twitch stream.

I'm guessing the reason the paradox occurred when they landed in 1906 is because Edith now knew Charlie was alive in the future. Like when someone's memories rewrite themselves to fit a changed history. Edith now had these memories of meeting Charlie in 1906 even if she didn't know her then, but as the time of Charlie's death approached maybe she began putting the pieces together and realized Charlie didn't die but became a time traveler somehow. Or to be more vague, it could be that the memories were repressed by timey-wimey goop until the time of Charlie's apparent death and then she suddenly realized "wait, if she just died, how did I meet her 15 years ago before she was born?"
You could technobabble (timebabble?) a lot of more precise explanations for HOW it could make sense that would be feasible, so I'm fine with this explanation as-is.

I liked the concept of the Thirteenth Doctor New Years specials because historically the BBC's mandate for a Christmas special every year meant when it was time for the Doctor to regenerate they always had to either shoehorn a regeneration into a Christmas story or shoehorn Christmas into a regeneration story. But having the Doctor regenerate in a New Years story would work great, the themes of those two concepts would go together really well. Ironically I didn't end up watching the Thirteenth Doctors last episode and I'm not sure if it came out on New Years or not.

41:46 Apologies if someone has posted about this, but I believe the reason the paradox happened was due to the whole paradox situation involving Charlie. A big note is made about how Charlie existing is causing the web of time to unravel (Neverland), becoming weaker in places and Charlie herself releasing temporal energy that allows time experiments that shouldn't work TO work (Time of the Daleks). Thus, a situation that shouldn't result in a paradox suddenly bends under the weight of Charlie's existence. In hindsight it's a big indicator of just how bad things are getting while Charlie lives (which in hindsight also applies to Seasons of Fear, even if that one ultimately ends with things better than they are found).
Loved this review. I love Big Finish Doctor Who, and seeing someone I enjoy watching talk about it and analyze it is a treat. The fact it's about one of my favorite audio plays is just the cherry on top (The Wormery is my ultimate favorite, but there are loads just after it I can't quantify a real list for). Eight and Charlie was a great duo, though I was introduced with Eight and Lucy, and it's interesting to compare both of them since they both had a first season of sorts where a mystery of them both trying to get home occurs. I should look into Scherzo at some point - thank you for the recommendation, and merry Christmas to you and your loved ones!

6:00 format change for this episode 12:43 British vs American (in pronunciation)
36:12 A line very memorable for Linkara 41:09 how time paradoxes can give birth to living time loops
42:47 let's vivisect the whole "do you deserve to live" idea, how selfishness is a dealbreaker, and somes tropes about living and dying and how the image of DOCTOR WHO - THE LAST audio drama fits the discussion
46:40 another line that is better than it sounds
49:32 Am I the only one who wishes we could explore a different approach to "choosing life" ? This might just be my contrarian nature talking, but , haven't you noticed that the usual lines of "You are loved, that you make a difference, you are not nothing nobody, and you have value" sound a little bit... don't know arrogant? egotistical motives to live?
I don't know, i think it would be way more interesting having someone on the verge of, you know, self-termination, still chose to live, even if the entire world hates them unfairly and nothing they do will achieve anything. But they still love life and to live (even if it is a one-sided love)
52:58 it would be hilarious if you actually showed a replay of both of you playing the yugioh card game (by EDOPro or Master Duel or Duel LInks or Dueling Book).... and both of you ended up bricking on turn 1.
Although that makes me wonder, what format would you use? OCG? TCG? Traditional=? A specific period format like EDISON? TOSS? GOAT? Would you ban FTks?

Throughout this review I couldn't help but think of Clock Tower due to presence of the clock ticking and the horror nature of this adventure, it's not really relevant to the story itself but it was just something on that kept barging its way into my brain.

2020 sucked but someone on reddit recommending getting into Big Finish and discovering everything they had to offer helped big time. Started with Lovecraftian Invasion and Scherzo... 2 stories i do not recommend others start with, but yeah. 8th Doctor ended up bridging me from a lapsed Who fan, into an adult Doctor Who fan. McGann is my second favourite because of this, after Smith.

I remember watching the 1996 movie on my 17th birthday. Paul McGann was a great romantic Doctor and enjoyed his adventures in Big Finish, the books, and Night of the Doctor.

I think that this may have been the first Big Finish I ever heard, as it was on BBC Radio in 2005, though I only heard the first part and listened to the whole of it in 2013. It's a beautiful piece. Dark, funny but uplifting.
Apparently Chibnall intended Spyfall as a Christmas special but the BBC wanted to move away from it. So the people blaming him for it are being a bit unfair. I look forward to people completely missing the point of this comment.
Rob Shearman also did The Holy Terror, compared to which The Chimes of Midnight is pretty light-hearted! Moffat has cited THT and TCOM as his fave 6 and 8 stories. You can see some influence in Heaven Sent, the whole loop in a prison with a figure coming after them.
What's the point in being alive... if you say that in some areas of the fandom you're practically expected to bring up Dan's comment in Flux: What's the point of being alive if it's not to make others happy?
And the last New Year special did have a time loop as well with a twist... though this kind of played into the themes of New Year's Day. It was kind of The Chase for New Who as a holiday special.

things have come full circle because in an earlier draft of the special Demensions in Time it was not a crossover but an annivesary special called Endgame which starred the Toymaker instead of the Rani kidnapping the past Doctors which the Toymaker later starred in the finale of the 60th the Giggle.

While I haven't read the BBC Eighth Doctor novels, I feel like they should be remembered just as much as the Big Finish audios. Seriously, people who first watched the New Series when it was coming out and thought the Time War was the War In Heaven only to watch the Night of The Doctor and Day of The Doctor and find out they're two different things must have been so confused.

It’s The Poseidon Adventure in Space, and the Poseidon Adventure was filled with depressing deaths too! I always thought the camp and balls to the wall craziness of the setting (space LARPers on a spaceship replica of the Titanic) outweighed the depressing deaths of almost all the good and decent characters. Honestly, it, The Chimes of Midnight, Relative Dimensions, and A Christmas Carol are my most revisited DW Christmas stories.
