I've been a spread for 17 years and still love watching your content, great advice everytime, I applaud anyone who shares their time and patience to help others who want to learn our trade 👌🏼
Got a small outside front of house wall to render, and this has given me the confidence to get up Screwfix, buy a paddle and mix first coat, wet, scratch, second coat, then sponge it all off....sit back then realise, I've made an absolute mess of it...and get a pro in. No seriously, great guide, let's give it a go.
This is so good. You are a great teacher, film maker and craftsman. Just brilliant. An eye for detail and no rushing the stages. Probably the best instruction video I've seen. Also makes me want to get out and start the job. Thank you so much. Inspirational!
I'm a brickie learning rendering and skimming. What I say to labourers is to stretch the water when mixing. If the sand is sopping then no water needs adding just plasticiser until it dries up when cement is added then add water only if it turns and no moisture is getting through the mix. I love watching your video, I've learnt loads mate keep up the good work.
I'm not even a plasterer but u explain everything step by step, complete and clear, making it look so easy. sometimes make me change my job and become a plaster 😂. Good on u mate and thanks for the videos and tips 👍🙏👏
Nice job and very good video. Very well explained. I've been doing it for 56 years. I've been doing scratch coat last few days, I always had lads labouring for me but now I am pebbling an extension on my own place and I've got no labourer...its knackering me! Keep up the good work
Respect mate!! It’s bloody tough bumping it on your own. I’m used to it now but I sometimes wished someone would help ha! Thanks for watching...all the best my friend
Great video again Blaine. Not rendered since i trained in plastering 18years ago, but looking to do few jobs soon, great tips and explanations as I find with all your videos. Always nice to watch videos of plastering/rendering. Different viewpoint to doing jobs yourself.
Wow!!! Nice straight flat wall no waves. You did a great job with the rod to get that wall looking that good! Thanks for sharing your skills and teaching everyone how to do it the right way.
Another great vid!! I’m just starting out on my plastering and revering journey and your vids give me knowledge and encouragement that I can do it. Keep them coming please your helping us little guys succeed 👍🏻
Nice one brother, id say the best vid on the subject so thanks for your time, I managed to milk the price of rendering to my bricklaying sotyhis made me money, thank you very much as the end product is banging...
Great, comprehensive, 'step-by-step' instructional video, thank you for taking the time and effort to do this and upload - definitely appreciated. Keep going with your awesome channel - and sometimes a 'thankless job', too!👍
Great work , i really value sand and cement remder. ,its reasonably cheap for materials and when done correctly, looks fantastic over most other render techniques
That is a good demonstration, new to this technique, we do it differently here same principles but the techniques and procedures are different. Thank you mate
Great video, will be rendering a block greenhouse soon and this has given me a lot of confidence, wish U Tube had been around 40 years ago God knows what I would be doing now, Cheers all the best for your future career.
Hi it's the first time I was watching your great work n advice has you go along. I really enjoyed it. Keep it going. After that so I can put Plaster Primer and then Dulux Paint. Savvy from South Africa God Bless
I'm in the US I'm a mason here been doing it for 30 plus years now I've done quite a bit of stucco also my question is for your scratch coat do you use a Portland base first or is it a Masonry mix??? I totally agree with you about using lime with the top coat it gives it a butter feel and makes it easier to apply. You are a very good teacher and it's easy to follow your videos I'm impressed with your talent I'm looking forward to seeing your next video
@@PlasteringForBeginners no problem, I've watched many of your video's.. I'm a chippy but have a go at anything.. it was a scratch coat and pebble dash job, my god did I struggle at times to get the consistency just right so I could apply the shingle, it was my 1st go ever and 2nd time I have ever rendered anything.. I did a mtr square at a time and certain areas would dry out and not let the shingle adhere whilst others we're to wet still despite using a waterproofer in the scratch and SBR in both coats.. my mix was 5:1:1 sand, cement & lime.. I couldn't even get on with the Derby to flatten off so I did it all freehand. Looks alright but blimin hard going 👍
Fantastic video and the expansion strip wow that's so important to stop cracks, I mean who wants to do the job twice. So much detail and a nice smooth finish. Normally I don't like this finish of a lot of render I see as its soooooo grainy. I did like a 3hr render workshop yearssss ago, I remember the foam float (different to yours) with a grainy finish (yes same from instructor lol) I don't remember the sponge. Heres hoping I do a good job
Absolute beginner here. Obviously it takes patience, skill, experience, and muscle. You make using the trowel look easy, for sure it takes years of practice. Wish me luck! Ill have to send you pictures of the progress on my projects.
Hi, fantastic knowledge and skills, Q. I have to render a corner on my house in Spain- the corner is METAL (earthquake proof) -how would I get the scratch coat to stick ? Many thanks for any help.
Another great video. I was just going to comment of damping down but you have just covered that. It looks a bit chilly there and I am a bit too old for site work these days but you young bucks can power through a bit of cool and breeze. Keep up the good work. Anyone following this will learn a lot.
Very good detail. I have a fine rendered wall leading down my driveway. There is a horizontal 5mm wide crack in the wall. I am keen to do the repair. I would appreciate if your could provide your comments on the following: 1. Do I need to do a scratch coat. Or can I simply fill in the crack with say cornice cement. Prime it with an undercoat and then put a fine render over it. 2. Alternatively fill the gap with your scratch coat mix and then apply the fine render
From A to Z in less then 40 min. Great work. Thanks once again. ps i could not find a hawk in Croatia so I have to make it my self. It has some advantages to work with.
Top video mate, thank you. I’m in the middle of building a small garden room and will eventually be rendering it. I’d love to have a rough idea how much sand/cement to order. It’ll be roughly 3 metres long on each of the 4 sides and 2.25 metres high
Just finished rendering a garden wall after watching this, thanks for the tipa. If you use lime in the top coat can you paint it with exterior masonry paint?
Loved watching this vid, super informative! Just had a mud kitchen built outdoors and the render not only cracked and blew but looked mega thin and patchy. Builder re did it but it's just as bad more patches more discolored areas and blown. Looking under the the render that's come away the base looks level no scratches could there be a specific reason for this. The overhaul render only looks to be around 2mm deep, am I right in thinking this is even worse than I 1st thought? Any advice welcome xx
Absolutely love the videos. You've inspired us to try some DIY rendering next week and we've ordered some plastering sand and cement to start us off. We are going to follow your mix 4:1 for the scratch. The problem I'm having is working out how much sand and cement we'll need for 60sqm. We are rendering a new outbuilding made from high density 7n block. Any advise much appreciated. Thanks again for all the great content
Hi Blaine, another great Vid. Can i ask what approx thicknesses are you doing each coat to ? And how long will the mixture last before becoming unusable?
@Plastering for Beginners, thanks for your great content. Here in the Caribbean, specifically in Puerto Rico, where we enjoy year-round summer weather, plasterers only do one layer, so it is completely new to me to see a double layer of plaster. Is this due to your zone's climate? Is there any reason you think we should be doing two layers of cement in our hot and humid climate? Keep up the great work!
Great hearing from you!! Thank you for watching. 2 coats is for 2 reasons. An extra layer against the wet conditions…very wet here…and strength. The more layers you apply the stronger it is. That’s obviously if it’s been applied correctly but that’s the idea to it 👍
You c ould do it in one coat use glue on block a 3 to 1 mix sand to cement scratch Ina bit ahead go back and double up then Darby straight edge is to hard for a beginner

Well said mate 👍🇬🇧

Great content and a big thank you. Just tried my first attempt a rendering, ever, today and very happy with the results.
