      I'm thinking Valve float from not changing springs when they upgraded the cams that's why issue was at high rpm and also why piston eventually hit valve hard enough to cause damage I would bet more than 1 piston will have sign of pistons hitting valves old springs cam upgrade is probably what led to all this

    Is it not just a snapped Rocker arm? That's what happened to my 964 Turbo after it's fancy engine rebuild and a quick trip to the limiter during a burnout. We replaced the rockers with fancy forged ones (not a massively easy job) and it was fixed. I'll cross my fingers for you dude.

    Engine builder here: Rich dip could have been caused by weak valve springs, this is a common thing to see on stock early LS engines and Barra 6's. It would also be the likely cause of your dropped valve, it would have valve floated up in the rev range, most likely because of the new cams making it go places it hadn't before.. Always a good idea to replace valve springs with a cam change.

    • @DYhondaman
      @DYhondaman 2 місяці тому +7

      yeah, i would have to go back and double check if they did new valvetrain parts (springs, etc) when they did the cams. larger lift without a matched spring would be poor judgement. plus younger tech working on older air cooled stuff didnt give me that much confidence.

    the cylinder bore peice is called a "Jug" usually - think of a dirtbike/ATv engine /VW engine/Corvair engine - valve probably dropped due to excessive RPM and had valve float - if the springs in the heads weren't rated for the new cam lift or were just on the edge of compensating for the higher lift then that would do it. In these engines its not as big a deal because each jug (cylinder) is seperate - so you can pull the head, have it repaired with new valves, pull the one damaged jug and piston replace those and put it all back together. The good thing about these engines and most air cooled engines is that each bore is pretty isolated - all in all if you dont have to split the case or messed up the bottom end which unless theres bit of piston that got into the bottom end which is very unlikely its not that big of a deal

    • @djdavis4713
      @djdavis4713 2 місяці тому

      If the valves aren't closing correctly during compression due to float, then it could push some air back through the valve, leaving more fuel than air, causing the rich dip? So valve float could be the fuel issue, and explain the dropped valve. (I am not a porch mechanic)
      edit: if its floating both valves, it could also push an unburnt air fuel mixture out the exhaust, causing a rich reading out the exhaust.

    I am not an expert or even well educated, but I did learn about air cooled engines in A&P school. We learned about spring resonance frequency which at a certain rpm/frequency the spring wouldn't be able to react quick enough and the valve would float. I believe the solution was dual springs at different rates. If your valve did drop, I would look into the possibility of dual springs. Again, this was in relation to aircraft engines, but they were very similar from what I understand.

    Very different car, but, my dream car as a kid was to get an old school diesel Hilux - the Aussie Dream. I got it, and enjoyed it for a little while. But it had issues - it sat outside my house for months with major oil leaks, shot tie-rods, ball joints and bushes. Blown front diff, and a bent chassis (got rear-ended in traffic).
    But after some time, I got some money together and fixed the issues. And I came to enjoy it again.

    It was a broken valve spring and you were floating a valve at mid RPM on one cylinder.
    The seat pressure got so weak after redline Dino runs, it finally kissed the piston while floating.
    I doubt you replaced the valve springs when you installed the new cam, with the higher lift the spring was depressed more than it had been during its service life, due to general metal fatigue, it’s a role of the dice. This is a reason to replace the valve springs when you upgrade a camshaft on any engine that’s had some miles on it. Unfortunately the dice roll for you was snake eyes.

    Genuinely one of the most interesting video’s you’ve made in years. I’m really, really bummed for you. That said I’ve genuinely never been this engaged in a video of yours since the purple R32 giveaway build series. I get that this channel has changed and that you need to be the new algorithm and marketing focussed Adam now, but this video was straight up nostalgic in the sense that we got to see the old you again. This video is one of the rare instances of the return of plain black clothes, black raybans just started with the mustache Adam, which imho was THE peak of this channel in terms of era. Just sad that the reason for the nostalgia is a car blowing up…
    Hope the damage is somehow managable even after watching those last few minutes about the dropped valve. Hope you can just slap on a new bore and piston and refresh the springs and retainers and call it a day.

    Probably valve float, I don't remember if you changed the valve springs to match the new cams but the more aggressive cams need heavier springs or the valves can float at high rpms and contact a piston, it probably just bent the valve causing it not to seal, usually if a valve drops it would have caused a lot more damage.
