Today, we resurrect a project that has been sitting for way too long, my 1997 Lexus LS400 with over one million miles on it. Famously owned by Matt Farah and driven by nearly every automotive journalist on the planet, it has the most history of any Lexus LS400 on Earth. But this needs a full restoration, and we have just the person to do it - Michael Elsea from Elsea's World. This is gonna be fun!

@@TheJohn8765 I have a W140 Mercedes, the model this car was meant to compete against directly. It's a fantastic piece of engineering and I like it better than the LS400 strictly because it has a lot more character and frankly the interiors cannot be compared, but as far as reliability goes it's not even close.

These 1st and 2nd gen LS cars are some of the greatest cars ever made. I sold mine with 320k miles for $500. And the sad part was it was running like new, just an extra car. I’m still kicking myself.
Even with 320k miles, theres a car similar with 3x the price for sale in my area😭

The Lexus LS is NOT a boring car, it’s the greatest luxury car ever made, Toyota engines (especially their V8’s), are bulletproof.
And for a car that’s done over 1.6 million kilometres, it still runs well.
As someone who has one, it is a pretty boring car but the lore and build quality is pretty fun to experience
You should do a restoration for the suspension/body/interior. After what this car's been through, it truly deserves it.
All new rubber and bushes new shocks n Springs too and it will drive like new
I worked as a Lexus Tech for 7 years and im here to tell you that those cars are made to last the test of time in almost every aspect. All you guys are so Leary to push buttons and operate things in fear of them breaking and then shocked when literally everything works besides a power steering issue.

They should, but they won't even sponsor the bad dashboards, ABS units, or timing chain tensioner in the LS, their most expensive car

The LS400 was my favorite car of all the cars I have owned since I passed my driving test (first time) in 1975. I exchanged my crysler grand Cherokee for it. I have been driving lexus ever since. Unfortunately due to the side effects of Radiotherapy and Chemotherapy neck and throat cancer I haven't been able to drive. I love that you are going to save it. I have been following your UA-cam channel for a long time and your enthusiasm is infectious. Looking forward to seeing the final result. I live in the UK but I seem to be more connected to the US since I was 17 and all being well I will be celebrating my 70th birthday on 8th October 2025 in New York and your welcome to come and have a beer. Good, I have a 1991 with the wheels and brakes off of a Series 2 and I love that car. It's on Eibach springs and it handles really well compared to stock. People love to ride in it because it is so smooth and quiet.

I had a 98 LS400 I've had over 40 cars but that one was easily the most reliable comfortable and cheapest to run. We owned it for 10 years used it daily apart from tyres and service item it cost nothing, we sold it for more than we paid. I miss that car..

i have this exact same car at home, same colors, and gold emblems but with LS430 wheels on it, 220k miles and its as smooth as this one is. its my hooptie. needs some love, i keep debating if i want to keep it or not tho. its a second car for me.

This was my first car in the US. I drove that thing through high school,college and 2 years after graduation. It had close to 400k miles before i sold it.
I can't wait to see the series on this car, being I drive a 08 gx470 with 230k miles on it and would drive it cross country tomorrow.

I had 3 LS400s and loved them all, I only sold the last one at 340000 miles because Toyota were delisting new parts. Some of the best cars ever made, not boring unless you like the excitement of breaking down.
I have a 1998. Bought it with 180k miles. Now has 250k. Been through a couple alternators but never left me stranded or unable to find parts.
Smoke out exhaust is likely power steering idle up valve when it fails will feed power steering fluid through vacuum and radio and climate control is under hood fuse box large square fuses to left of box should be second one up
This is a great car to restore as I think its earned it, not many cars go a million miles and keep on going. Fully restore it and see if it can do another million.
NOCO is a great jump box. I have a GB 70. Never fails.
