+1 on the compressor content. I've also just bought a 100 litre. I have a workshop and I will still build a bubble inside with a fan of some sort. Definitely cover your frame with polythene or you will regret it forever with dust and pollen. Only spray when it's warm outside. I've just commented on your most recent upload about which spray gun and nozzle size. I'm thinking a sealey with a 1.8 for primer. And I've no idea what after that lol. Keep it up, you are making super progress.

I’m really under pressure to get it finished, I’m torn between taking it to a body shop for speed and the satisfaction of doing it myself

@@pdubs7831 yeah, I see where you are coming from. You could try and get the primer on, (in a bubble) light coats at a time and decide then if you want to paint it. The work you've done already is superb and it'd be nice to see it through. In saying that, a professional body shop, although costly would save a lot of pain...

I hear you with the paint, the plastic surround helps but you are depending on the weather. I've only done bit's and bobs of paint but a large shed/unit workshop + plastic tent I figured I'd need to do the whole van together. Good idea to pop windscreen out but I expect you won't like what you find...... An absolute pain to get glue off. Windscreen fitters can be picky if they don't see perfect finish, or unbroken line of previous glue. On mine it was the shrunk and cracked seam sealer in the join at the top of A pillar that did a lot of the damage, worth checking the joints in the rear pillar at top around tailgate also, the water seeped along the seam and inside the pillar. Around the windscreen the water was travelling in along the top and then behind and down into the pillar. Also the last replacement windscreen wasn't fitted well, left the outer seal high in places, so water, muck, kept in instead of out and collected all along the bottom, inside the seal.....last job on my body to do list +paint, windscreen's been out a year !

I probably have not appreciated the difficulties involved in the respraying aspects of my project ( similar set up to you) and have been getting antsy with the chap doing it, it’s taken forever..you’ve put that into perspective for me, looks like I’ve some humble pie to eat. Patience is an art form.. you seem to have it abundance. Thanks for putting this vid out, good luck.

Yes give the guy time, every time I’ve thought the wind has dropped and the conditions are good, I have a go, then the wind picks up and blows a load of dust or pollen seeds into the paint or it starts raining. It’s like the weather knows what I’m trying to do

I have to admit the original job request was quite easy, tidy arches and sills and replace a half rear panel. It has somehow morphed into a three quarter respray job with drivers door and tailgate replacements and a colour change..beginning Feb he took her in…not done yet !!! Never had this done before so i have nothing to judge it by..but I am frustrated and impatient..taking the chill pill now.

@@simonstork9404 I thought I’d easy finish this van last year and I haven’t even done the interior yet. I can’t remember the amount of times I’ve seen a tiny bit of rust and rubbed it down to find a 6” hole behind some filler then start cutting, welding, rust treating, filler, sanding, filler, sanding, filler, sanding…. Then I find another one

Yep it’s been like that a bit..but you’ve been alone and in your spare time..where you find the get up and go to keep cracking on is awesome, he’s had help occasionally ( I would only get in the way and chat too much, lol) and it’s a tiny garage but who knew so much time could be swallowed up doing this. I too have the interior to put back together but not to your extent, mine should take a weekend or so plus the extra additional bits and bobs. But once he’s done I know she should last years…

Could one build plastic walls around the covered work area? My idea is to construct a kind of diy paint booth. The controlled airspace would perhaps keep the dust under control during the spraying process. Perhaps a few cheap box fans with cheap furnace filters to collect the dust in the diy spray booth. The fans could pump clean air in and out of the booth. Do you think this idea might help?
    Yes please explain the tools!

    • @pdubs7831
      @pdubs7831  3 роки тому +1

My plan has been to put sides on the shelter to create a spray booth for when it comes to spraying the shell of the van and yes possibly using a fan and filter to draw air out and filter air in. Even professional booths have issues with dust in their jobs so tying to do this in these elements is very hard. Ive just lost a bit of enthusiasm for it as I’ve been one step forward one step back for weeks 😔

I wouldn’t be surprised if they didn’t spot weld the inner and outer skins together when that side window was put in, my vans the same so if you look at it the glass it isn’t flush with the body.
Our screen fitter pointed it out when I first got the van and it’s bugged me ever since 😕

Hi again , I've never used lacquer only cellulose Colour ( base coat ) , what paint are you using ?, are you using enough thinners ?, remember the temperature will make a difference. In my experience ,you need to give the base coat about an hour to go off or the lacquer will react with the base coat , i found that out spraying my wheels.
Also , have you colour coated and lacquered , let it dry for a few days , then moped it up to see the final finish ?.
The finish may look crap when it's raw , moping it up gets rid of a lot of flaws in the paint and brings out the shine .
Using just base coat colour does make it easy , i put about 5-6 coats on as you take paint off when you wet sand and mop it , moping makes a massive difference , Have you got an electric mop ?.
Make sure your paint is not too thick , I've painted outside on a hot day and the paint comes out very flat (dull) , once mopped it was gleaming , that's with a cheap gun you get in those air kit sets for £20 lol.
Don't go mad using different guns for undercoat then another for your colour , i can't say about lacquer through the gun , I've only used spray can lacquer on my wheels , Chris.

I resprayed mine in a similar situation as this, however I put up a large gazebo and used masking sheet to create a 'booth' and wetted the floor - minimal to no dust issues bud. I'm guessing yours is done now?

I need to remove my rear bumper but seems I need to remove the metal bumper iron also in order to get access to the top two bolts??

    • @pdubs7831

Cheers David, it’s a bit of a daft design. The two bolts are underneath the main body/rubber seal of the van, a star bit or ‘T bit’ if I remember correctly. It’s possible to get them out at an angle but mine were corroded in so I had to drill a hole through the bodywork to get the tool in straight to them out, then welded them up again after.

@@pdubs7831 hi bud. I have a t4 with rear tailgate like yours, and have just noticed a small amount of rainwater getting inside the actual door and gathering at the bottom.
Seems to be getting between the two door skins and then dripping down inside the door.
Does this sound like a window seal needing changing out?
Nothing on inside of glass so must be from front side 🤔
