I knew a guy who shutdown the entire server system for a school district and he did it from a terminal in the high school library. FBI showed to the school, went to his house and confiscated all of his tech, he was on probation for a good while, the works. One day, someone knocked on his door and found him on the floor, dead from (I'm guessing because he had a past with it) heroin. The kid was a childhood friend and his dad's worst nightmare came true, that one day he'd get a call informaing him his son OD-ed. Things like illegal possession of firearms, using the firearm to rob people, the actual robbery itself, reckless driving after you escape, evading arrest - possibly assault if someone steps out of line during the robbery, conspiracy, breaking and entering, all that. Because these crimes are digital as opposed to physical, and there usually isn’t a chance to run when the cops show up, there’s way less to pin on them.

I bought an Audi S5 with money from my cheats in my last year of HS... Except instead of stopping I continued to learn and eventually made and started selling cheats for other games like Rust, Apex and EFT. I still do it to this day and it's my main source of income and I love doing it haha
It's actually legal unlike fraud, but you have a risk of getting sued if you sell too many copies and really piss off the game studio. I believe that it's a relatively legitimate way of making money and can't really be compared to sim swapping. Congrats on your journey though, I tried college but didn't have the patience and motivation for it. Cybersecurity is very lucrative, I got friends who are making really good money in that.

People are kept in prison for the purpose of keeping them out of the general public because they would be a threat to the general public. The funny thing is he still stayed as a skid to the end and did more social engineering than anything else. Can't code his way through and consistently had to buy tools to do it. The exploits he used isn't found by him, often ideas he found somewhere else. Even if his sentence wasn't heavy, I struggle to see how he would do "good" even after his release. You can't just get off this kind of high, especially when they are gonna be treated way worse by society after jail.

This is such a gross oversight by the FCC and cellular companies in my opinion. It's well known smart phones are a diary of our lives with details we might not even know through meta data and such information should be protected at a minimum from predators (yes the irony meta data is sold frequently without you knowing by your provider is not lost on me). There should be an option to have mandatory rules in place that cannot be waivered regardless of the person or "circumstances". Humans make mistakes but concrete policies turns mistakes into negligence and could carry enough weight for major companies to share liability in damages. FCC can see if a transmission is taking place in California and all of the sudden is in Massachusetts. Immediately deny service until those concrete policies can be satisfied. I had an additional role as an RTO while I was infantry and learned a lot of what the FCC monitors/regulates. This is well within thier means and I promise if it became so burdensome to handle magically laws to prevent it happening so easily start making their way through the system. It's depressing knowing those victims will never see a fraction of their loss and even if they managed to pay the restitution back what good is it twenty thirty or forty years later? It's eaten by inflation. I'm not excusing the hackers but hold the cellular providers financially responsible but THEY get paid the restitution and I'm sure it would sort itself out. My first deployment to Afghanistan I tried using my debit card at an official US px and immediately denied. Despite me filling out forms informing my bank of my temporary assignment down to the COP (combat outpost size of a local park) and FOB (forward operating base it's like a small city) I was denied service, card locked, and only restored because I had my father as a secondary on the account to recover it in person. I guess I'm rambling at this point but this is negligent and please folks don't store financial data on your phone. Not even your banks app. Your phone is so insecure it's unreal. Chances are it will never happen to you but when it does it will be at the worst possible time.

When she said she has no retirement i felt so bad for her... Think about woring for 30+ years and maybe have 10-15 years left to retirement that you saved for. And all those years stolen in some hours. Totally devistating. If you guys are saving money in cryptos please use harddrives for them. 🙏

“Kids do things to impress their friends”
Yeah, like wearing their dad’s rolex at school. Not stealing multiple family’s life-savings. 10 years is honestly insulting to the victims that had decades of hard work stolen from them.

And yet all the bankers that did much worse before the subprime mortgage meltdown were given a free pass. Frankly, unless we go after the much greater criminals like the bankers were, we’re just hypocrites that enrich established criminals while ostracizing outsiders.
