@@DrDrayzday Thanks for sharing your knowledge with us UA-cam viewers. I have folliculitis on my face and my doctor told me to stop shaving. Since I've stop shaving, I now have cysts forming under my beard which are large and painful. Is there anything I can do at home to ease the pain and swelling of the cysts? I've already had one drained and I'm not looking forward to having my face cut open again. Any info would be greatly appreciated.

My skin condition started 3 1/2 years ago when I got a haircut at a place I have never been before,
It comes and go's and antibiotics seem to help but when I finish them it comes back in the same area behind the head above my neck. I finally scheduled a visit to a dermatologist, but now after seeing your video I will know the questions to ask and the procedures they should follow if they're a good dermatologist like you.

how did the appointment go? i have had it for 8 years, got a derm booked beginning of march. I have tried 3 months of lymecycline daily, and nose ointment for 10 days and hibi scrub; it cleared it up i'd say 90% but it never cleared it fully. during this period i also started developing back acne bacne, either side lower down on my back. when i stopped the anti biotics it cleared it but the folliculitis came back very strong. since then i have done pro-biotics and it cleared up more.

Look, is very kind of you to say "you can't self diagnose..." But have you any idea how many doctors I have seen just so they could get over with, give me some cream that doesn't work and tell me that they aren't sure what it is, probably an allergy.... I have been to tons of doctors and dermatologists and they have something in common: don't care about the patient, care about the money.
Self diagnosis is the only way some people can go to the doctor and get treatment for what they have because the doctors will not bother to run tests if not necessary.
And btw, I had it since the age of 12. This has been going on my whole life. I don't self treat... But I had to do my own research before going to the doctor again and this time tell them what to look for because they are just that useless.

FUCKING AMEN. I was just about to leave this comment myself. I got this condition last year, and it has been very aggressive on me. I've been to 5 different doctors, 4 of them dermatologists (1 of them being my GP) and all but one of them continued to have me come back over and over again, misdiagnosing me and writing prescriptions for medications that never work. Only recently did I finally find a dermatologist who I THINK is finally helping me with this problem (his medications are working). I truly feel as though the doctors all know what the true diagnosis is, but because they make money off each visit, they're incentivized to misdiagnose you to have you return. So much of my hair has fallen out as a result of this condition, and I truly feel like it could have been avoided if the doctor didn't play these types of dirty games. People can be so fucking shitty, and doctors are no different from anyone else. I honestly think most of them are scumbags.

I am so happy to have found you today! I am 56, was diagnosed with seborrheic dermatitis/folliculitis (sensitive, oily, very coarse, wavy, salt and pepper hair) on my scalp over 30+ years ago, and have tried everything. I visited the dermatologist in November and she told me I don't have seborrheic dermatitis anymore but I still have folliculitis and a very sensitive on the oily prone to scabs scalp. She advised me not to use any irritating products. I prefer clean natural products. I have found that a clean clarifying shampoo works best for me, leaves my scalp clean and clear, and keeps my hair cleaner. It allows me to to only shampoo only 2x a week.

@@banandababa hi Zay! Swabs all came back negative; my husband and I have been playing doctor ourselves as my providers harassed and misdiagnosed me as a “picker” when I reviewed my records (I saw I had never even been diagnosed with Folliculitis, which I ended up advising I disagreed with, as I showed no signs or symptoms).
I finally found two providers who believed I wasn’t causing the issues myself, the first was willing to take a biopsy, which was VERY helpful, as this told us what the contents were (ruptured cyst and excess keratin).
With this we could at least have an idea of what to use to treat my mystery condition (I’m now 14 months out, no diagnosis). I already had Clindamycin at home for cyst issues, so I began using that with my dermatologist’s okay, then the second Derm gave me steroid injections in each lesion (HUGE difference immediately), increased my existing Gabapentin Rx to help with pain and sensations in my face, and placed me on the Rx pill Spironolactone 2x daily (50mg each).
I would recommend requesting a punch biopsy; surface scraping didn’t get deep enough to grab the contents for me, but be warned, it may make the site more irritated for a time initially.
Oh! I also have a Rx for 2.5% hydrocortisone, should the keratin build up, and need to be worn down. I exfoliate a great deal (or the keratin builds too much, very quickly, a lifelong issue, but worse now), and use DuoDerm to cover open areas, and let them heal (cut to size, they’re like GREAT hydrocolloid bandages).
I had luck with a dermatologist at a teaching hospital for treatment, my face is nearly clear now (a couple spots are slightly open still, but BARELY).
I also made sure to have autoimmune panels ran 3x, and while they came up weakly positive each time, and I was diagnosed with fibromyalgia, they don’t believed the two to be related.
Let me know if you have additional questions! ❤️💛💙

I have taken 30 days of antibiotics and same topical liquid to apply.
    Nothing has helped.
Is there any recommendations you can give me.

I have taken accutane TWICE. The first time was for my face. It worked wonders, I don’t get acne on my face till this day and it’s been 7 years. Yet….. I started getting light scalp acne …. A few years ago, I took accutane again, it tamed the issue but never got rid of it. Idk what caused this…… but I’m getting sick of it. I already started losing my hair, now this too lol? Like Jesus man, I love how accutane didn’t work……. I honestly just don’t know what to do about it anymore. I could change my diet, work out, and what would that even do. I wish I knew what caused this. Been having skin issues for a long time now.

I have hyperhidrosis so I think that's why I have it. I am taking way more precautions with sanitizing my razor, changing clothes, pillow cases and sheets often, washing my face, arms and hair in the kitchen sink so my showers aren't so long and too hot and turning the shower off and on between washing. My bathroom is small so it gets very hot. I also wipe down the shower, my bottles and bottle caps of shampoo and face/body wash and with my bar soaps i let them dry and wrap them in plastic sandwich bags as well as my razor after it's dry from my sanitizing spray. Lots of work but worth it. I also have been using panoxyl, apple cider vinegar, neutrogena grapefruit wipes and a sulfur zinc oxide salicylic acid anti-fungal anti-bacterial and anti-acne soap.
Edit: I also take apple cider vinegar supplements, coconut supplements, sage supplements to help with sweating and rosehip supplements.

A lot of dermatologist suck. A lot don’t care for what they do, it’s just a paycheck for them after a while. We need doctors that want to get down to the root cause of an issue. Rather than mask symptoms with meds that cause other issues with their own host of symptoms

I've had folliculitis for about 2 years now from tweezing the white hairs on my chin & neck area. I have tried everything I can find & been on antibiotics prescribed by my PCP. The tweezing became an obsession with me since the hairs are white & would not be affected by laser hair removal. I couldn't afford it anyway. The areas would break out in red sores & I have felt large lumps under my skin which mostly never came to the surface or opened up. Just before I got the most recent treatment I am trying, I had a large lump under the skin in my neck that grew to the size of a large marble & seemed to be still growing but also seemed to come to a head like a huge pimple. The areas were very sore & painful & this lump was too. Most recently I bought a 2 ounce jar of Emuaid Extra Strength. I also had an abrasion of some kind next to my mouth that just wouldn't go away & seemed to be acting the same way the areas on my chin & neck area were. I'm on my 3rd day of using the Emuaid & I actually did notice a pretty big difference after just the 1st use & after the first day. I am hopeful that this might finally clear up the ongoing infections. As of today (day 3) there is a huge difference in both areas I've been treating. I've had to peel off what seems to be a thick layer of skin that keeps growing over a lot of the areas (by my mouth & on my neck area) because it seemed to keep growing thicker as the days went by. The abrasion by my mouth is almost completely healed now on day 3. The lump shrunk down a huge amount after the first day & today it is mostly just a surface level bump. Although it is very pricey at $58 plus shipping for a 2 ounce jar, I would recommend trying Emuaid Extra Strength, just judging by my results so far. It seems to be amazing how quickly it has healed both areas & the lump. I would say that using this product somewhat liberally, it may still last for a month or so if I had the need to continue using it for that long. I'm not sure if I will need it much longer than a week or so at this rate of healing but I can't predict what may or may not happen. I will come back & post more after a couple of weeks or so.

Haaaaalllpp! I was stupid and shaved my face about three weeks ago, and now my cheeks are sooo broken out! I have a lot of meds and creams on hand. Vaolocyclovir (oral) Clindamycin, sulfur lotion, and an RX antibiotic cream. I’m about to try it ALL. 😣😣😣

Taking Gabapentin for my pain and restless leg syndrome made me get a really bad case of folliculitis like cysts on the nape of my neck and some in the front. As soon as I stopped that medicine and went on with oral antibiotics and topical benzoyl peroxide and salicylic acid it cleared up completely. No treatment worked while I was still taking the Gabapentin.

Been having this condition for about 6 months now. Tried all natural tea tree conditioner first with MAYBE very little results, now trying T/Sal shampoo (5% salicylic acid) which most recommended so let’s see if that works. Mine is pretty bad and I probably have about 4-5 half dollar sized rash/bump patches on the back of my scalp. 😔 funny though, I had it mildly for 2 months a few years ago and head and shoulders 2 in 1 charcoal worked marvelously but not now. Sad face once again.

@@KenKen-bf8je I didn’t lose hair. Maybe 1-2 tiny bald spots. I found something to clear it up at least for me. There’s still small patches of bumps but it’s working. It’s called neutrogena clear pore astringent oil eliminator. It’s a blue liquid in a bottle. It’s worth a try. Use head and shoulders charcoal with it though cause it may dry your scalp. Apply 1-3 times a day with open pores (after warm shower or compress is best) hope it helps

Years ago, I went to my doctor (not a dermatologist) because I thought I could have follicuilitis on the trunk. When I asked her if I had it, she said I did and prescribed me a clindamycin gel like cream (not capsules). I stopped using it after some time because of excessive red, flaky and dry itchy skin. She also did not take a sample of the bacteria like you said. And I still get bumps from time to time, if i dont keep clean bed sheets, wear moderately loose clothing, and etc. Plus occasionally i do get flare ups. So I'm wondering if I should use something like benzoyl peroxide or a BHA, or see a dermatologist ?

I've been suffering from folliculitis (according to my dermatologist) for 9 months now. What started as a pimple next to my cheek, below my eye ridges, slowly spread all over my cheeks. Now i have black acne marks, huge pores, dark marks, black heads . The doc gave me azhithromycin 250 and doxycycline for 4 months. Ongoing 3rd month but no relief. This stuff doesn't itch. I don't feel anything at all.
And now i see tiny red bumps appearing on the lower portion of my nose.
    God help me :x

That’s how mine is ! Not itch doesn’t really hurt. We all know big pharma knows the exact cause or causes for acne and or hair loss. They seem to maybe be correlated with each other. But hey, there is no money in the cure ! The money is in the suffering lol. Welcome to America 🇺🇸

Hi Dr Dray, have you heard of Baiden Mitten? The cloth supposedly dates back to the Ottoman Empire claims to immediately improve blackheads and large pores, skin firmness and wrinkles, scars and stretch marks, skin tone and dryness, discolorations and acne. They cost about $50 on Amazon and get great reviews. It’s supposed to make your top layer skin come off in rolls. I tried it twice and didn’t get “the rolls” of skin coming off but my skin did seem smooth and exfoliated. Would love to get your opinion.

I went to the dermatologist and he told me I had folliculitis I kinda figured I had it anyways he didn’t explain there was many types kinda rushed me out with 2 prescriptions no tests done. Should I be worried that he didn’t do a test? I’m taking Doxycycline and a topical Clindamycin. I have hope they’ll go away because I’ve been dealing with this for about 3 years.

Skye damn that sucks, well after taking my 2 prescriptions they seemed to work, but I ran out of the pills and after 2 weeks I can feel the folliculitis coming back. My next appointment is on April 8th so I’m going to set the doctor straight and see if I can have actual tests done. This is so frustrating. I feel like it’s not just an infection I feel like some type of allergen triggers them because they were completely gone and after running out of the pills they’re slowly coming back.

i had it on my chest and stomach area for years.. when i was younger it was more white head like as you described. But now its just red bumps. Its not as noticeable but still bothers me a lot, everytime that I've seeked out a dr in the past though they just try to prescribe steroid creams without any testing though. I dont really believe thats a true solution long term. Maybe I just need to find a better dermatologist. Ive also heard that laser hair removal could be a possible solution. The idea of killing follicles to prevent them being infected sounds a little extreme, but do you have any thoughts on that? Thanks.
