Oh my goodness, Dr. Dray! So I am a 2nd year med student studying for my STEP 1 that's in a few weeks. I came across your channel while procrastinating a few days ago and thought "pseudofolliculitis barbae" was an interesting term and it stayed with me along with your description of it. While taking an NBME practice exam today I got a question about an African American man with itchy bumps on his chin, cheeks, and neck and what the most likely diagnosis was. The answer was pseudofolliculitis barbae! I was so happy that I chose your video to procrastinate with! Thanks for all the great info!
I appreciate how you tie in skin issues with self esteem and mental health. Thank you got recognizing this and talking about it. Love your videos
Thanks Ms Lori!
I love the way you explain things so thoroughly and don’t dumb it down. So many UA-camrs who talk about skincare just scrape the surface and I feel like I haven’t learned anything useful.
"Ingrown hair are most common in individuals of african descent"
My curse makes more sense now😭
Not a curse to be black. Wear it like a badge of honor.
@@buzzmeanytime Pretty sure she was referring to the ingrown hairs and not her skin color when she called it a curse
Wow, I have that problem and I'm white.
@@bjornfollin5056facts and I’m black 😂
I am a white guy and I still suffer from ingrown hairs, but my hair is curly and my family is from the Middle East, so maybe I have a small trace of African DNA somewhere in my family tree.
I’m a white hispanic and I have very bad hyperpigmentation do to ingrown hair in my bikini area, legs and tights, I try shaving, depilating, waxing, and now I bought an at home laser hair removal and it seems to be working as well as washing with a salicylic acid had made a difference but the hyperpigmentation is still there I’m using scaring lotion which I hope it works!
Thank you for talking about this I feel like people don’t like to talk about this subjects since we all see perfect skin people in the media.
What soap with salicylic acid do you use?
@@karlavillatoro7115 La Roche-Posay Effaclar Medicated Gel Face Cleanser, I buy it at target.
@@val9096 Thank you!
It seems that I ONLY get ingrown hair in the bikini area.... what are your thoughts for helping that particularly sensitive area?
Same..
me too
Me too. ..laser or use an electric hair shaver and Tend Skin
I know this is an old comment but if you see this; wait until the end of a hot shower to shave. Use a thick moisturizing shave cream I like Aveeno and a clean sharp razor with multiple blades(not one or two blades) shave downwards don’t shave against the skin. After shaving and every few days use an exfoliating body wash or cleanser on the area. You can also soak a washcloth in hot water and lay it over the area before and after shaving. Most important thing for me was the razor. I use a Gillette Venus five blade and never have this problem anymore.
SciFy Di thank you! :)
I see that, whenever I stop shaving, the razor bumps and ingrown hairs just seem to get worse. It's summer in Wisconsin, I can't wear pants. It's so incredibly humid and hot here, and my legs look like Hornets attacked me.
You're such a gifted teacher, Dr. Dray! Everything you explain is so clear and you give easy to follow examples. Brillant! How do you manage to consistently not use fillers like um . . . ah . . .er . . . not an easy thing to do when you're recording! Have a fun weekend!
video editing my friend, lol! thanks!
@@DrDrayzday So down to earth...❤️
I love how thorough, medically accurate and easy to understand your content is! I have a question - which seems a common one. **Here's "TMI" but not really. I shaved my pubix area for 15+ years. About a year after I stopped shaving, I started getting abscesses. Once a year or so on avg. I only trim with beard trimmers every month now. Quite a few have had to be lanced and drained. How do I help prevent these? One doc said use dial soap before and after shaving (but I no longer shaved!).. Another said it's common due to sweat, bacteria and the nature of that area. What's safe to exfoliate down there? What to cleanse the inner folds of labia? Halp! Sorry for the long winded comment!
Omg!!! Did not know you had a video on this! Always a life saver when it comes to skin!!!
You explain things so thoroughly and I love that because knowing WHY is so important (to me anyway)!
This is really good information. I'm a mid-40s medium brown skin toned African American male who has had issues with razor bumps and hyper pigmentation. I've visited several dermatologists (looking for a quick fix I guess) but didn't take it really seriously until the past few months as it seemed like it was getting significantly worse. I guess I kind of sort of knew what to do but never did it consistently. Here's my 2 cents on what I have been doing the past few months to get it better (and I have had good results) but your results may vary and everything is different for everyone :
Washing my face- I generally use La Roche-Posay foaming cleanser for normal to oily skin. this was recommended by a dermatologist. It's expensive but 1 bottle lasts a long time. Previously I used Vanicream cleansing bar which I liked and I still have a bar to carry with me when I travel, I just liked the LRP foam cleanser better. I also use Dickinson Witch Hazel Face Toner after washing
Shaving- Dare I say I wouldn't necessarily trust a study funded by Gillette that says it doesn't matter if it's single blade or multi blade when they sell tons of expensive multi blades😂 I haven't done any research studies but anecdotally, I have seen improvement by going to a single blade (ironically, using the King C Gillette Double Edged Safety Razor). I replace the blade every time and wipe it down with alcohol before and after use. It actually gives me a good clean shave. With that being said, those multi blades are designed well and do their job. The problem with multi blades is for African Americans and other darker skin people, it does the job a little too well because the hair is cut so close, it then grows under the skin or has pus like pimple looking infection. So I avoided those, plus the safety razor blades are cheaper. I also use Proraso pre shave cream conditioner and Aveeno shaving cream as well as Proraso after shave. It's worked for me and I plan on sticking to this routine for the long haul
Sunscreen- I use CeraVe suncreen which I seem to tolerate and it doesn't clog up my pores
Medical stuff- A dermatologist prescribed a topical 1% Clindamycin lotion to use in the morning and then a retinoid/steroid/hydraquinone cream to use at night.
Also, I use Nizoral pre-shampoo and shampoo to wash my hair. I noticed it has reduced flaking to near zero very quickly. I shampoo every 5 days or so
Like I said, everyone is different but this routine has helped me a lot.
Hi Dr. Dray, I’m an aspiring medical student and your videos have truly inspired me to persist in this path - thank you! I wonder if you can make a vlog about your medical school journey? And what Led you to dermatology? Thanks
Hi Doc, I'm so glad that you spoke on this topic! Have you made a video yet on dermatographia, how to best alleviate it, and any related skin conditions? I've had dermatographia since birth and it's very irritating, and the allergists and dermatologists that I've seen so far haven't known what to do to alleviate my discomfort.
Thanks! I have not
Oh yeah...I once tried to remove the peach fuzz on my face with wax. Worked very well...but when I woke up the next day the sides of my face were covered in dozens of tiny 'pimples'. Not fun. Lukily they went away pretty much on their own within two days. Careful shaving is definitely the way to go on the face. Thanks for the tip about desinfecing the razor...I never thought to do that!
Thanks for sharing! Glad to hear it went away :)
So like how you talk about history and studies that have been done instead of just what we should do because you think it’s the best thing I love that you explain it ...seriously I feel like I’m so annoying to doctors when I ask them why about things !
I sometimes get ingrown hairs in...well, let's just call it the "swimsuit area"...even though I don't shave or wax. Something that has worked very well, is a solution called Tend Skin. The ingredients are: Isopropyl Alcohol, Butylene Glycol, Acetylsalicylic Acid, Diglycerin, and Polysorbate 80, (which I presume is a preservative.) I just put some on a cotton ball and wipe the specific area once a day, and it's much happier in 2-3 days, with no irritation.
yeah i listed it in the description box, it is good
Dr Dray 😳 Oops! Apparently, I posted before I checked the info box. 🌹
@@annika777 Are we supposed to moisturize after applying Tend Skin? I just used it for the first time tonight and applied CeraVe afterward...?
@@keshakellogg5995 I never have, but I don't think it would be a problem.
@@annika777 Thank you for your reply! I looked it up on their website after I asked you and it says moisturizer is good to apply afterward. Also, seeing a reminder to only apply Tend Skin to DRY skin was helpful!
Love the Friday Q&A with Dr Dray! Always so helpful and informative. : )
Thanks Ms Holly!
When you brought up the self esteem part, it really hit me because I typically always have clear skin along with a good skincare routine and I dealing with a bit of razorbumps and it really having me down in the dumps and I am going to start using Tend skin to clear them up because I feel like I have acne.
Hey doc! What a great Q&A, thanks for all the insider tips!! XOXO Sharon
Thanks Ms Sharon!
I look forward to your videos everyday! Because if you I started wearing sunscreen every day :)thanks for all the great information xo
thanks! glad to hear you are wearing sunscreen :)

Thanks Ms Jackie! Happy weekend to you :)
Your skin has this gorgeous glow in that shade of blue.
Had to screenshot this just so I can be on the lookout for shirts in that color lol
Thanks :)
Aloha Ms Andrea! Great video! I followed the steps in your face shaving video and it worked so well! No more red bumps and irritation! Happy Friday!
Thanks! Awesome to hear!
It would be interesting to hear you talk about sugaring hair removal
I have a problem I always shave and I get ingrown hair what is good get razor bumps
My teen is having problem with in grown hairs post waxing, plucking & shaving. The hairs seem to push through into the surrounding tissue rather than curling back in. Your info here in was very helpful.

I have a history of many ingrown hairs on my legs and I have only ever shaved once every two weeks or once every three weeks. I have noticed not 100% improvement but definitely significant improvement with shaving more frequently!
If I only had to deal with peach fuzz, I would love that!
When i had ingrown hair after shaving my bikini area, i stop shaving it. I just trim it. Ingrown hair at the bikini area is very painful. Now i only shave my armpits. Trim it, shave it and use removal cream. Puhhhh
How has the hair remove worked out for you? I never had issues waxing my bikini area but now I have a huge ingrown and I hate it ! I’m planning to stop waving and use removal cream . I have really straight hair so I’m surprised
Great video. You're very intelligent. I just was diagnosed with a boil that my derm injected with cortisone/antibiotic combo. Whew was that painful! But it really helped. She said a lot of things you did especially about keeping the area super clean.
glad to hear you were able to get great care!
I have had multiple bacterial infections over the years, so often that I have a special ointment I use when I see a red bump developing, so thank you!
Hey! What ointment is that? Thank you
I had success with electrolysis many years ago.
Tfs!
Hi Doc, thank you for such informative, it's really interesting (even though I'm not affected by it). What's your thoughts on facial shaving now that you've done it for a while? Have a lovely weekend xx
less irritation than waxing/plucking/threading, but does not eliminate the risk of ingrown hairs that can occur with all non-laser methods of hair removal
Hi Dr. Dray! Thank you so much for your video. I dermaplaned my skin at home about 2 months ago now. I did it completely wrong, without knowing how invasive this procedure can be.
After a week of doing it, a whole bunch of tiny bumps appeared on my face. I had no idea what happened - so I just decided to keep my skincare routine simple to see if that worked. After a month, I finally went to see a doctor as the bumps weren’t going away. I was prescribed ‘Acnatac’ with clindamycin and tretinoin. I have been using it for nearly 3 weeks now. The bumps are still covered over my cheeks, although the redness has gone down. I am still concerned that this product may not help my skin, but hoping as I continue to use it, my skin will clear. I’m concerned I might actually have ‘fungal acne’ compared to a bacterial infection - but I have no idea.
I also think I am currently purging atm…. Anyone have any tips?? My skin has certainly impacted on my confidence.
I just stumbled upon your channel last night, and I have been obsessively watching all of your videos! Your content is wonderful! I used to get really bad ingrown hairs from shaving my face, and after I started using an unscented pre-shave oil and a fragrance free shave gel simultaneously, I don't get ingrown hairs anymore. A lot of pre-shave oils unfortunately have menthol, alcohol, or other irritating ingredients, so it's hard to find a good one.
Thanks for sharing this! Glad the video was helpful and hope you are having a great day :)
Love your content!! (; Could you maybe do a video about tips for blackheads or even add a few tips into a video? Thanks SO much if you do!!

Do you have any tips for blackheads? (:
what about the nape area, crown area and the temple area.serum build up when using oils and lotions.
How can I tell if the spots and blemishes I have are a result of shaving or something else?
Love your personality, love all of your videos Dr. Dray!
May I have a ?: what is your advise on the Vaseline and Vitamin E oil for the lips? Is it safe? Thanks so much Dr. Dray!
vaseline is fantastic for the lips...vitamin E less so
I don’t like wearing shorts because of my ingrown hairs and every time I have the confidence to wear shorts I feel like everyone stares at my legs. I have waited several weeks for them to just go away and I also took a break from shaving and still saw no difference! Any tips? They are just mainly on my lower legs!!
Smart and insightful as always

Hey, new subscriber! I am really struggling with advice on laser hair removal, the difference between laser and IPL, etc - I'm getting told to avoid groupon and such but have no idea where to go. Any help would be appreciated - what questions to ask to ensure I'm dealing with an experienced professional etc. It's a lot of money to waste with someone who isn't going to fix my problem, so I'm scared to get it wrong!

terminal hair vs velus hair, beard and baby hair. hair coil growing straight or curly has anything to do with it.
Outstanding lecture!!! Thanks a lot, doc.
They also used to zap my ingrowns with a laser too and that worked.
Hi! I have chronic ingrown hairs, and I don't shave! Can you please address other causes of folliculitis?

I have sebopsoriasis and it is turning my life into a living hell. I would really appreciate it if u made a video on how to cope with it especially as i have lost half my hair because of it
My mom had severe psoriasis on her scalp and she used this medication called Oxypore. I know it was a prescription topical solution that was dark brown. I hope you've found relief by now but if you are still struggling with it and haven't tried that maybe it would help.
Omg! Baby Dr Dray is so adorable!!! 👶
I love hydrogen peroxide for razor bumps and any irritation. I use it all the time
Thoughts on home laser or light hair removal machines?
Pilots (at least the ones who work for FedEx) cannot have a beard period. As part of their job they are required to wear oxygen masks if they are the only pilot at the controls (in case of a sudden depressurization event , I think). Beards/facial hair prevents the mask from forming a tight seal.
I'm literally examining my skin as I watch haha. thank you for this very informative video! definitely helped a lot!!
Hi dr dray!! Glad I found your video. I have been searching for tips on how to avoid ingrown hairs but most of it is from "beauty experts", so happy to get a professional's opinion! Some of them did recommend the products you listed but they also recommended to use a body scrub. Are scrubs at all helpful? Is there any way to even out pigmentation in the bikini area?
Also I have been dealing with ingrown hairs/ irritation from shaving on the bikini and upper thigh area since I first started shaving back in middle school. I generally only shave once a month, always use a clean razor, and use lotion everyday yet I still get irritation. What bothers me more than anything is I get extremely and uncomfortably itching with in a few hours of shaving despite prepping the skin, moisturizing, and taking long ( even months ) breaks from shaving. Is this something I should see a dermatologist about?
Hey let me know if you find any solution for this
@@lailakhan6 I switched to waxing. although it's more expensive and not recommended from most of the research I did. It worked for me. I also use chemical exfoliator wipes daily. It took a few months to get full results. But honestly can't remember the last time I had any irritation. I barely notice the regrowth vs before it was extreme discomfort. I hope this helps. Let me know if you have any other questions.
@@valeriemenchaca1774 what about pigmentation?
Ever since I tried to save the planet by using a stainless steel reusable safety razor, I get ingrown hairs.
I bought stridex pads, Paula’s Choice BHA and AHA lotions, as well as the Cerave SA lotion for this reason (KP too). However, I believe you mentioned somewhere that leave on chemical exfoliants such as these aren’t the best and that it’s much better to use a cleanser with the appropriate active ingredient. So my question is: do you recommend the use of any of these products (since I already have them) for ingrowns on the legs (my biggest problem) or would the better option be to do a medicated wash followed by a great moisturizer? Additionally, I was prescribed a 2.5% hydrocortisone cream for mild seborrheic dermatitis on my face, could I use this on my inflamed ingrowns? If so, how often? And would an over the counter lower percentage work well once this 2.5% runs out? I hope you’re able to answer all these concerns! Thank you!
i think so...people tend to get to dry and irritated from the leave on products, especially on the face...can be helpful though on ingrown hairs as a spot leave on
Dr Dray thank you for responding, could you let me know your thoughts on the final question regarding the hydrocortisone? Thanks!
Thank you so much Dr Dray!

Is willow bark in a facial cleanser the same as saliciylic acid? It is listed about 3/4 of the way down on ingredient list. In using Differin gel and noticed after watching several of your videos I should not combine a saliciyic wash at night with the Differin....
yes
Great video! Thanks for sharing.

Thank you for the great information. Just having gone thru this (still going thru) with husband, I have a couple of questions. His was on his legs and arms (I'm talking 150 bandaids). Would that be connected to the face shaving? Seems to be scarring but the RentinA and all the other meds have helped. CeraVe has a salicylic face wash--would you recommend that as well? It's been so disfiguring!
It ceratainly can! Sal acid body wash is probably a better value (they all have the same 2% sa strength). Yes it can help with ingrowns on the body related to hair removal
such a curious thing since he does not shave his arms and legs!
I used to struggle with this A LOT. I just stopped shaving everywhere, yes, everywhere and my problem was gone... I don't shave and I don't have ingrowns anymore... They are super painful. I'm single too and I don't date, why must I put myself through pain for no reason beside society norm
I've never shaved my legs and have always had thousands of ingrown hairs all over my legs and arms. So, here I am.
do you have any recommendations on face creams for the winter? it's really dry where I live and I noticed I might need a heavier moisturizer.
cerave moiturizing cream in the tub
I have ingrown hairs in my scalp because I buzz cut my scalp for years. It's true, I feel relieved when I buzz cutting my hair if I let the hair grows for two days I feel a thousand bees sting on my scalp. My dermatology thinks it is seborreic dermatitis. I took a mirrow, and only saw red pimples and hairs stick to my scalp. That's make me depressed and sleepless because is painful, and itching. I have to resist at let my hair grown. I'm an african descendant . When I was young I had a pilonidal cist 3 times.
I do the dollar shave club, so even though the blade is going to a landfill, the whole handle isn't. Women are charged more for everything, so I use men's razors and shaving cream. :)

I am 84 yrs young and it seems the more I futz with my skin on my face, the more age spots pop up. Is there something that might fade some of them or is useless.
Always love your videos ^_^ this is not related to in-grown hairs but I wanted to know what you think of diy face masks, also if you could recommend any that could be effective. Is it safe to apply turmeric or besan on face that many Indians use?
i discourage diy face masks
Hey Dr, can you make a video on the uses of vitamin e on hair and fine lines of skin?
i would not recommend vitamin E for either
Hi Doc, do you use any BHA products? If so what are your favs?

Best explanation ever!!!
What is the opposite of hyperpigmentation or white areas instead of brown or darker spots? And can ingrown hairs that have become infected cause it?! Thanks in advance if your able to answer!
P.s. love watching your post!
hypopigmentation...very large differential of possible causes
Love your videos. Can you do a video discussing hair growth? My goal is healthy scalp and length retention. So many products on the market with promises for beautiful hair. Curious about your opinion as a dermatologist about best shampoos, conditioner, oiling hair, and products marketed to us? Claims from the beauty industry can prompt us to spend lots of money!
Thanks! I have a whole playlist titled "hair care Q&As" so go check them out! I discuss this in those videos and think you may find them helpful. :)
I will check those out. Thank you!
My boyfriend gets this on his beard. I’m surprised you didn’t recommend Ceraves SA face wash, is there any reason why not on this video?
My leg hair on my shins does not create a bump, but the hair grows straight just under the first layer of skin. This is annoying as I can't get a close shave, and then shaving can irritate the area further. Is this just shaving irritation or a type of ingrown hair? WHat type of exfoliation prior to shaving can help?
What if you use an electric shaver?
Thank you , great info.
Thanks!
Thank you for the info. It definitely is a self esteem killer I hate my ingrowns so much
