Best fucking line in the fights, the episode, and possibly the season, it really shows you, under all that hate and rage and pain, Maul is just another victim of the Sith and of Sidious
Some of the best writing in all of Star Wars is this scene. The build up. The fight. And the aftermath. Mauls last words "He....will....avenge us...." before dying. Kenobi closing Mauls eyes. The look on Obi Wans face as he cradles his arch enemy with compasion. Just incredible.

While Ashoka vs Maul is a wonderful addition to the list of lightsaber duels, I personally still think the final Kenobi vs Maul is the best because of the decade old history they share. It also feels like this duel is the true end of the prequel era making the transition into the Original Trilogy complete.

Adding any live action duels to this I'd slot in TPM Maul vs Qui Gon and Kenobi (between 1+2) and also RotS Anakin and Kenobi vs dooku (between 2+3)
@@TheJabbate1 I hate it for this very reason. Maybe HATE is a strong word, but it shouldve been more. This should've been the final exchange after first actually dueling. Instead its over in an instant. Its not a Duel, its 1 single exchange.
Comic Crossing I disagree. Duels in real history were over quickly often less than a few moves. Kenobi was a Jedi Master and Maul just implied threaten to kill Luke. In Kenobi’s mind, Maul had to die and no mistakes this time. It had to be done quickly. Also, the duel showed how far these two characters have changed since their first meeting. Maul barely changed so he attempted to kill Kenobi the same way he killed Qui Gon but Kenobi learned from his mistakes and the mistakes of the other Jedi so he used Qui Gon’s fighting style and succeeded where his master had failed. And finally, one of the ways the duel served as a transition into the Original Trilogy was in the Lightsaber duel styles itself. OT duels were more conservative and grounded but the PT duels were over the top and fantastical. It’s like comparing Akira Kurosawa to John Woo. Seeing old Kenobi doing moves that young Kenobi did would feel wrong to me.
@@ComicCrossing Nah, it's a bit too superficial to just have another duel. The tension from this fight doesn't come from the fight. The tension comes from contextualising the fight. Their relationship, the build-up, the dialogue, and the references. The fight is not the spotlight here, everything else surrounding the fight is what makes it legendary.
The Ahsoka and Maul fight had very good choreography, but sadly because the characters barely know each other, there wasn't as much emotional impact or tension. And in fact Ahsoka was literally just a stand-in for Anakin or Obi Wan as Maul expected either of those to come to Mandalore instead of her.

That gave me a good chuckle
I watched this again after rewatching Episode I, and get this: He didn't just adopt Qui-Gon's stance: he repeats precisely, move-for-move, the final exchange between Qui-Gon and Maul while he's trapped behind the force field. He does exactly what he saw Qui-Gon do in move 1 and 2, and lures Maul into the same sequence of moves that killed Qui-Gon. When he holds his staff sideways like that, that's exactly what he does in Episode I: he catches Qui-Gon's downward diagonal slash on the right-side blade, bounces it back just a bit too far behind him to recover, stuns him in the face with the crossbar, then stabs him through the gut with the bottom blade before he can get his saber back in front of him.
Obi-Wan executes exactly the same setup here, and Maul responds with the identical moves as in Episode I: he's going to dispatch the student exactly the same way as he beat the master who taught him. At the last moment, instead of bringing the saber to his left shoulder (maul's right shoulder) and cutting in diagonally, he comes straight down with both hands, and as Maul parries the diagonal strike ready to club him with the middle section he cuts neatly through it. It's not just a different cut, it's literally the simplest cut in Kendo, and probably the most basic move of Lightsaber Form I. He lures Maul into trying the same attack he tried 30 years before, and counters it with literally the most basic attack a student can learn.
That's next-level mastery, and it finally cuts through the backflipping saber-twirly nonsense to the heart of what the Jedi are all about. Obi-Wan won this fight about five seconds before it even started.

This is not only the greatest animated duel, but it’s also the most realistic. It’s straight up old school samurai death in under three moves dueling. The goal was to end it as quickly as possible. Watch kenjiutsu videos and see the similarities.
You’re right he knew if that the fight kept going it would be bad.
Also i know star wars isn't usually going for realism but if it were this is how 99% of lightsaber duels would go. You would almost never come up against an even match, either you are better than your opponent or they are better than you, and your both trying to end the fight as quickly as possible.
It is very quick and only a coupke of moves which is how seord duels tend to go in real life. Look up Historical. European. Martial. Arts. (HEMA).
I mean, that's not limited kenjutsu. Most real sword fights end in an incredibly small number of moves, regardless of the school. Be it HEMA (Historical European Martial Arts), 19th century infantry sabers, Chinese swordsmanship (don't know the term), they all end in very few moves.
This is greatest lightsaber duel, period, animated or not. Other duels are nowhere close to the matters of distance, timing, mind games and guessing work shown in this duel. Well maybe Cloud City duel and somewhat Death Star 2 duel are decent, due to work on distance and timing and overall set and scene designs that tell a story by themselves. Such as Luke rising up red lighted stairs to face Vader, etc etc. But Twin Suns duel feels like a genuine improvement
- straight up Akira Kurosava style, samurai swordfight classic, ikken hissatsu (death with a single blow)
- surprisingly, very realistic, I compete in swordfighting and believe me it is very easy to make a mistake that can be exploited, and most often the winner is not the one who does more right moves, but the one that does less wrong moves.
- shows both Maul and Kenobi's character development culmination
- includes the lore and gives a reference to Episode 1, a pivotal moment for both characters. It was important for Obi-Wan to win exactly like this, and he knew, that Maul had to try to kill him same way as Qui-Gon was killed.
And this all is included into 1-minute timeframe. This is hands down best lightsaber duel ever.
He forgave him. He probably knew the kind of things that had happened to him to have him sink this deep, and forgave him with that emprace

@@jakejake11112 that was Snips as Fulcrum in Rebels seeing Anakin as Vader. but this is Kenobi and Maul would you say obi wan is still a jedi or even moved past the Jedi way and learned to forgive Maul in being to move on and protect Luke.

I interpreted Kenobi's style change differently. With the duel that lead to the death of his master no doubt burned into his memory, adopting Qui Gon's opening form allowed him to infer what Maul's opening moves would be and deploy the perfect counter to them. Being inside of Maul's head like this, the fight was over before it began.

He just pulled a Thrawn maneuver here, reduce the parameters to a minimum to react more efficiently.
Ya. Maul didn't need to change stance since Juyo matches up well against both Ataru and Soresu.
He just was caught up in his arrogance and couldn't resist killing TWO jedi the same exact way.
Not to mention Qui Gon's death is the whole reason he took up Soresu as his main fighting style, before that he wanted to learn Windu's Vapaad. This scene is Kenobi at his most knowledgable fighting the man he's devoted his entire adult life to learning to counter.

And in legends it explained the meaning of that. Maul had Kenobi at his mercy. He let his guard down for one second, to savor the coming victory. Kenobi took that opportunity to slash Maul. Since that time Kenobi would play that moment in his mind to make sure he would never make the same mistake. Hell he even explained it to Anakin in the past. Anakin ,high on the Dark Side, felt Kenobi's mental preparations were pointless before his power.

Brilliant video, but what wasn’t mentioned was the special moments after. As maul is dying the way he says “ is he the chosen one?” Humanises maul in such an amazing way, takes all the fear out of him and makes him a vulnerable man, realising that his own ambitions are insignificant compared to this overarching plot. And even though he has a different viewpoint of that prophecy to obi wan, they end up both at the same point. Dying, believing luke will be the next step. I love Star Wars so much.
Yeah Maul's final moments as Obi-wan holds him bring the whole thing together in an insanely satisfying conclusion to one of my favourite fictional villains.
at that moment you see the hatred of both men turn into respect towards a fallen enemy both were in the same high spot of the opposite coin and both fell down to the lowest, remember how when obi wan faced maul they were both apprentice of their masters still, and their lives took highs and lows mostly at the same time
And then The Last Jedi came out...
And in the end both of their lives were utterly ruined by the same man, that being Sidious, and so they likely found a sense of solidarity in that as well.
I also think he is admitting, in a way, that the Sith's outlook on the Force is wrong. That all Force users are supposed to be kindred spirits in the will of the Force. "Then he will avenge us..."
I also like that just before Maul dies, the yellow in his eyes fades slightly, giving way to a green iris. Almost like in his final moments the dark side is leaving him as he lets go of his hate.
Just like when his brother died.

Except that he NEVER let go of his hatred. He just realized that he was directing it at the wrong person. His last words are "He will AVENGE us", i.e. "someone freaking kill Palpatine".
When you see Kenobi's face looking at Maul after this, you can see pity in his eyes. He doesn't feel anger, not fear or sadness, but instead he feels bad for Maul, because he understood how terrible Maul's life was. First being a slave, permanently carved and scarred by the dark side, then cast aside and left alone for years to dwell on what was done to him all that time. He thinks of all of Maul's terrible deeds as being a slave for Palpatine. He respectfully laid him down, feeling pity for what happened to him.
Maul's story is tragic really.

Aside from Maul killing his master, I think that's why he felt responsible for bringing Maul in during TCW. Killing Maul was the reason he was promoted to Knight and then to the Jedi High Council shortly after the war began. I took it partly as Kenobi feeling like a fraud.

Plo koon was a Jedi killed by clones, night sisters and brothers are gray and died to Grevious, grevious was a fake sith killed by obi wan, Assad Ventress died to dooku, savage oppres to palpatin, barass offie might not be dead and if she is she’s not a sith just disalushioned, all of the inquisitors are not sith, and dooku was killed by anikin which is a technicallity because anikin almost falls to the darkside their and then dos truly less then a week later. Obi one is the only Jedi to kill an actual sith as a Jedi and stay a Jedi after the deed. Even luke dosnt get that victory because Vader dies to palpatin, snoke to Ben, Ben to palpatin, and palpatin to Vader a sith and ray a ‘jedi’. Ironic

I really like how obi-wan ignites his saber as soon as maul talks about Luke. He is a good father figure for Luke.
You almost feel that Obi-wan had played the last moments of Qui-Gon Jinn over and over in his mind for decades. His parry and strike had been practiced in his mind thousands of times. Poetic.
He was forced to sit and watch the man who was essentially his father be killed. I’m sure this is exactly right. All three moves are an exact copy of Maul’s killing blow sequence against Qui-Gon. Obi-Wan had at this point known for decades exactly how Qui-Gon could have beaten that move set.
The best part is that the move he used to counter Maul’s stunning blow is that simple downward slash. This is literally the first, most basic move of lightsaber form 1. Obi-Wan would have been taught this move at the start of his training as a youngling at the Jedi Temple. Maul is defeated by complete mastery of the most basic move in Obi-Wan’s arsenal.
Additionally, the duel shows that Maul was prevented from progressing through his obsession with revenge. Obi-Wan has changed and improved; Maul has remained stagnant. He tried the same moves all these years later and never suspected that his opponent would do anything different from his master.
It’s such an amazing illustration of the overarching theme of Maul’s character arc: his thirst for revenge gave him power, but ultimately prevented him from forgiving and allowing himself to move on. It makes the lesson clear: the desire for revenge can make you powerful, but only forgiveness will allow you to escape.

He actually switches to form one: Shii-Cho. This is the form that his master, Qui Gon Jin used. The fact that he switched from his more comfortable form to the form that his former master used against maul is what made maul so angry. Obi Wan was basically saying "I know you beat my master when he used this form, but I will use it to defeat you", taunting him without any words to bait him into trying to use the same move he did on Qui Gon.
Atleast that is what I think, but he def switches to form one, not four.
Qui-gon uses Ataru
I interpret the switch as Kenobi having bettered himself between the two fights. He has endured the clone wars and has made peace with his life. Maul hasn't and still clings on to what happened all those years ago. I believe that once Kenobi saw Maul take his stance, he knew Maul hadn't changed and baited him into trying the same move he used against Qui-Gon. Kenobi beating him this way shows in the simplest why Kenobi is better than Maul. Kenobi has learned and has made peace with his past while Maul hasn't.
Shii-cho would be him holding the saber in front of him, ready for the absolute basics of fencing. Ataru is holding it back, more ready for the acrobatic stylings of form 4.
I read it as pretty explicit bait, which Maul swallowed whole.

I remember when I was 12 watching this fight thinking "Man that was so stupid it was only 3 strikes". It wasn't only until years later would I understand the beauty and the understanding of it.

I'd like to believe that Maul knew he was gonna die, it felt like he came there for a mercy killing coz he had nothing to live for anymore.

I think about how absurdly stupid it all sounds if you read the recap of what he's done after being bisected.
...and I realise that if anyone could pull off a story of Darth Maul becoming "Pro Tektre, Jedi Knight", it's Dave Filoni. So I'm back to just liking & agreeing with you, no doubting.

I love how the duel isn’t Duel of The Fates 2 and is mostly a way to illustrate how the two have changed over the years.
The biggest reason I love this fight is because it is so realistic, I mean real fencing is decided in at most 10 strikes, and having a 5 minute duel wouldn’t make sence, but this fight does
It makes sense when the fighters are super human and know where the enemys blade is going even with eyes closed. Comparing lightsaber duels directly to fencing is unnnecessary but i do agree it makes this specific fight very cool. One mistake and you are dead, Maul tries to rush in a finish to the fight almost in disregard of his own life, maybe he just wanted it to be over already one way or another.
I just noticed that when Kenoni changed his stance, Maul's eyes widen for a bit as if he remembers that's what Qui-gon used in Episode 1, which leads to maul wanting to repeat his move from Episode 1
That was exactly the point. Obi-wan invites the same attack from Maul, because he knows Maul will take the bait, but unlike Qui Gon Jinn (who was never much good with a lightsaber), Obi-wan is one of the most experienced and lethal lightsaber duellists who has ever lived, and he knows what his winning counter will be before Maul even moves.
I know people normally quote a bit of Sun Tzu at this point, but I think there's a more appropriate (mis)quote from the Duke of Wellington here, in the aftermath of Waterloo :
"He came on in the same old way, and I defeated him the same old way"

@Boruch Arnold i cant stand when people say that episodes 8 and 9 were so bad they made the prequels good... no they did not, the prequels are still garbage... jar jar still exists, anakin still hates sand and goes from turning palpatine into the jedi to killing children in under 5 minutes lol they are still garbage. The only thing that has changed is they are now joined by episodes 8 and 9 in their badness. @Boruch Arnold I think you are right but you significantly oversimplify his fall. When he disarms Windu (pun intended) this is a snap decision (what have I done) without full thought, more then that its him doing what is technically the right thing not killing Palpatine as per the Jedi code and the moment he thinks I've gone too far the jedi will not forgive me. An interesting note he is vilified for doing the "right" thing here where as he was lauded for doing the opposite and wrong thing earlier with Dooku. He isn't "truly" evil at this point yet though but he thinks I can't go back and starts down the dark path that "will forever dominate your destiny" as he has been taught. He has been taught that he can't be redeemed at this point. So he bites down and despite not wanting to do evil goes all in doing things he doesn't want to do to save padme holding her as his hope in mind. Then he slaughters the children because he feels he must, Im evil might as well go all in but its not what he wants. This is the point at which Obi-wan feels that there is no coming back and so gives up hope on his friend and believes he is without redemption. He then travels to Mustafar and kills a bunch of evil people and actually ending the war doing so, sort of a good thing. It should be noted at this point that Anakin plans to betray the emperor in most extended and hinted media, save padme, kill emperor, rule galaxy benevolent dictator. Padme arrives, we see a brief flash of Good Anakin with her, who then sees Obi-wan thinks she has betrayed him starts to freak out his plan is falling apart as padme turns against him he starts to rage and rant and its at this moment Padme does turn and feel he can't be redeemed (your breaking my heart). He then knows he has to fight Obi-wan even though he still doesn't really want to do any of this and starts psyching himself up, blaming Obi-wan for turning Padme against her and trying to rationalise everything he has done. I think you should note Anakin is more powerful then Obi-wan but he loses, why? Its because Anakin isn't really wanting to kill Obi-wan as well as he is an emotional wreck with Padme and everything else he has just done (talk about trauma) he then tries to fight with the dark sides passion which is unstable but he uses all his jedi forms still clinging to the tatters of his identity he hasn't actually let go, Obi-wan however does the Jedi thing and supresses his feelings and sets about destroying the evil before him which is irredeemable. Fight happens of course Anakin loses, note during this entire fight he is called Anakin by Padme and Obi-wan not Vader. He is on the beach burning screaming I hate you, but does he really? I think this is forced he "has" to hate Obi-wan when he really hates himself for this all happening. Obi-wan breaks emotionally at the end and can't finish the job casue he doesn't hate Anakin he loves him. Finally Vader(the emperor calls him this) is rebuilt first thing he asks about is Padme, he is told he killed her and the children, his last hope dies he screams NOOOOOOOOO, and he finally gives up on himself and his will to live. I think this is important as the force is a living thing connected to life, his self hate I believe may be another reason for his loss of power. He is now Vader in truth, self-hating, loathing, and rage incarnate. He now switches lightsaber styles dropping any shred of his former self fully gives in to the dark, loses any hope of over throwing the emperor, and stews for years on how it was all Obi-wans fault. He only is redeemed through A New Hope, when it comes out Luke is alive, he renews his plans to overthrow the emperor and now rule the galaxy as father and son. The jedi Dogma that you can't return to the light is ultimately what leads to all this evil, they are too absolute in their teachings to believe in redemption, they doomed themselves.

It went from: “you can’t destroy hate with hate Luke” to “look a main character girl Jedi and his token black guy!”
The fight between Obi Wan and Maul is gorgeous, specially since it is short and straightforward. It is quick, efficient and carries a lot of emotional weight. Obi Wan finally a fully realized Jedi Master engaging (again) against the man who killed his master. It is so good. It is poetic justice. It really captures that idea of "western samurai duels" that were the inspiration for the Jedi in the first place. Feels like watching a movie by Akira Kurosawa. This scene alone makes _Rebels_ a worthy series.
This was the most epic, emotional fight since Luke vs Vader. It was an satisfying ending to a drawn out feud.
Definitely has the same amount of emotional pull as Luke’s duel before the Emperor.
I find it interesting he cradles mauls dying body in his arms the same way he did with qui gon and satine despite the fact maul killed those two.
If you think about it, at this point in time, that's all he has left. His master is dead. The love of his life is dead. His best friend turned to the dark side. All he has now is his nemesis. The only reminder of the old days. In a way, I feel like Obi-Wan can see himself in him. The Sith took everything from them both. Obi Wan had a self control and discipline to "rise above" and Maul didn't. In the end, how do you hate someone who lived such a tortured life? Obi Wan empathized with him, and was sad to see that vengeance consumed his heart till the end. I think before going into this duel, Maul knew he was going to die. He went to find Obi-Wan for this exact reason, he no longer wanted to live- and he couldn't think of a more worthy person to take his life.

My favorite thing about this fight is how Maul changed in his last moments...
... he didn’t.
His entire life was spent in pursuit of revenge, revenge for the Sith, revenge for his brother, revenge for himself.
In their final conversation Obiwan talks about how he rose above his previous faults and reached enlightenment while Maul still mires in his hatred and desire for revenge with his dying breath. You can see the look of disappointment on his face because Obiwan believed that he could do it, that he could rise above like he had.
“He will... avenge us...”
He did. He got bisected the opposite way from the Duel of the Fates.
I think he changed, or at least we see one final part of him, we see his fear and desperation. He wants it to be the chosen one so he can die knowing that the people who he blames for his suffering will be defeated one day.

Why is star wars so frikin good
I like to believe that Maul changed a little. While I do agree that he didn't change his outlook on life: I must have revenge, I think he changed in the sense that he didn't hate Obi-Wan in that last moments. For someone who chased the same person for 20+ years, that's a big step up. But I agree that he never let go of his desire for revenge. Still, I think he had hope in the end.
I remember when I first saw this duel I was really disappointed, but after time passed I realized how perfect it actually was. This was the best way they could’ve done it imo
This was literally my same journey as well. I watched it for the first time when it aired, and I was shocked at how quickly the fight ended (even my mom commented on how short the fight was). But, having gotten to see it again and analyze the many layers of depth to it, this is one of my favorite fights, along with, among others, Ahsoka vs. Vader from Rebels Season 2.

Yes it's very Yojimbo / Akira Kurosawa like, it's the perfect samurai dual for those two and over time I loved the clean perfection of it rather than the Hollywood flashy shiny time fights they use to sell tickets. In fact that it is what drew me to the series, in the first place, just cowboys and samurai in an epic space opera backdrop. I really hope the series finds its way back to this original ethos and the folks who were in charge of Clone Wars and Rebels take the reins from here on out.

I believe Maul did change his strategy when Obi-Wan changed stances. Right after he does it it cuts to Maul, who's eyes widen slightly. He shifts his grip on his saber and also shifts his feet slightly. I believe he didn't plan to attack the way he did until he saw Obi-Wan's stance. After that, the extreme defensive capabilities of Soresu did the rest. Obi-Wan baited him perfectly, knowing Maul's brash, headstrong nature would be his undoing.

You're correct. his attack was deliberately chosen once he saw the stance swap, he recognized it. If you notice, he attempts to use the same move he used to kill Qui Gon, by lunging up and catching the overhead off guard. Obi-Wan deliberately swapped to that stance hoping to bait that particular attack from him. He was already coming down the same time Maul was going up.
It's also not just how great of a bait it was but also the symbolism of it. Maul, stuck in the past while Kenobi has "risen above" Maul.

Maul probably didn't plan to kill Obi-Wan the way he did Qui-Gon, but when he saw Obi-Wan change to the very same stance and style his master used, i am sure he welcomed the irony of killing the student, his nemesis no less, like he killed the master, which is why he DID go in for the same attack sequence. Obi-Wan, however, being the master duelist AND strategist that he is, probably anticipated all of this.

Not only is this fight awesome, it is pretty realistic as well.
Its the fact that Kenobi is shown as a much more wiser person than he was during the clone wars that just makes him win and infinitely more badass. He played a genius trick by using the same stance as his former master. Maul, blinded by his anger knows this stance and takes the bait. And thats when Kenobi finishes it in three damn moves. Its simply genius.

Just came back to this video after about a year, and honestly, I have a much greater appreciation for this duel now...
Absolutely is the best, its the exact duel the franchise as a whole needed for lightsaber combat to stay grounded as a believable form of fighting. The subtlety of the changes in forms, with the sentiment in those changes and strikes solidifies the perspective of how careful and elegant lightsaber fights are for the fighters themselves. Its a fight you replay to dissect carefully, and encourages you to do the same with every other fight. Without it the series just seems too choreographed and the strikes and blocks between most fights almost seem insignificant to each other.

Darth Vader vs Ahsoka Tano, for me at least, was the most exciting and intense lightsaber fight in Star Wars.
It was also very emotional because of the last time they ever spoke. That hurt, seeing someone you loved and trusted just fall into a hole they can never climb from.
Ahsoka fighting and believing in Anakin, saving and sparing him at every opportunity, that is the most hopeless battle she could have ever fought and that made her all the more noble for doing so.

The first time I saw this fight, my thinking differed, and I think that is one of the beautiful things about this scene and Star Wars in general - moments like this give us all something different, something to talk about. Here is what I saw:
Maul is unwell, lost, looking for something to... do. Something he thinks is meaningful. He finds Kenobi, who is at the height of his power, and thinks killing him will do that. It is unclear to me if Maul understood Kenobi's condition here.
So they talk. Kenobi says it right away, that he has risen above... something. We can guess what, but we don't have to because then we are shown. Maul taunts Kenobi and gets advice in response. Maul threatens Kenobi, and gets patience. Maul begins to speculate about Kenobi's motive for living in this desert and we see Kenobi's expression become more alert, yet he is still. It isn't until Maul deduces that Kenobi is there to protect a child that the situation escalates, but the only escalation is that Kenobi prepares to defend himself (and Luke by extension).
Kenobi's first stance shows us he is ready to fight, like he fought with Anakin and the rest of his friends to protect his civilization. Maul and he have fought a few times since Naboo, and this is how Kenobi begun his fights during those years. Maul, for the first time since their first duel, however, ignites a second blade. This is symbolic. This takes us back to that original fight when Maul was just a threat that had to be eliminated, and Kenobi shifts his stance to that of Jinn's, again symbolic. This shows us he has integrated with his current wisdom and experience that of his master, to whom we might already have realized he should have listened more attentively.
Maul attacks and Kenobi easily, almost casually, parries and then stops him with a single strike. Maul immediately understands he was wrong to attack, maybe about everything, and falls. Now, this is the most interesting part, I think:
Kenobi holds Maul's dying body as he would anyone he cares about. Maul seeks confirmation that the prophesy was wrong and the chosen one was not Anakin. Kenobi, for no practical reason and with good reason to remain silent, confirms it. It is a purely compassionate choice, and shows us again above what he has risen. Then we see in one line the true nature of Kenobi and Maul's relationship, one that has been shown to us over and over - they are both victims of the Emperor. They are not enemies now that they BOTH understand that.
I think it's beautiful and is my favorite duel in all of Star Wars.

You know, despite the high praise you've just given this duel (and it does deserve it.) You've missed out on a key detail. Maul does change his stance. Or rather, he changes his footing. In fact there is a scene you've left out showing this. This is about their growth, but in a way you seem to have missed. Yes, Maul hasn't moved on while Kenobi has, however Obi-Wan uses this to his advantage, by luring Maul in with the stance change. Maul goes for the attack to the face, thinking Obi-Wan has more adopted the style of his Master, when in reality he's going to unleash his trap. This is the true brilliance of this duel. Not only does Obi-Wan avenge his Master, but he shows he's moved on and adapted, while Maul hasn't. He is able to kill Maul so easily and tactically, where as before their duels would last minutes, and end most often with Maul running away.
Add in to it the dialogue afterwards. Obi-Wan tries to redeem his fallen rival, to bring him to the light, seeing the victim that Maul truely is for the first time. But, Maul is too far gone, and dies a Sith. It is a sad death, but a respectful one.

Mauls eyes are still the Sith yellow. He is still a darksider, and a trained Sith, even if he now doesn't follow Palpatine. Him saying "He will avenge us" just shows that he is still thinking of revenge. He's been betrayed, and getting revenge is all he thinks about. Both against Kenobi and Palpatine. However, Kenobi does try to redeem him, it's just that some people are too far gone.

Honestly, the fact that this fight was over in three swings, that it was so short, made it so much better. It made the finality of Kenobi and Maul's arc so good. It felt so punctual.

You missed a layer of the preduel, Obi wan chose that stance specifically to bait out the move because he realized Maul had not grown at all in the decades since they first met.

I think it was less that Maul hadn't grown but that Maul remembered Kenobi not so much for their first fight (even though that is what sparked the hate boner for Maul) but rather for all the fights they had up after until that fight. Kenobi on the other hand didn't just remember their first fight but also saw the fight that killed Qui Gon. Maul failed to account for all of the fights Kenobi was present for and just made account for the fights he directly had with Kenobi.

Especially since I have lost any credible sense that anyone falling in a whole is the best part to Star Wars as those characters always survive... You care more about an enemie you fought for years rather than a stranger you just meet. You have this sort of weird relationship in a way. You bassicaly know eachother, kinda like friends do. So when the conflicts over you sort of feel for them, you understand them, you say your final goodbyes to a person you knew for so long. Even if you hate them. That being either staying till they die, paying your respects, or simply acknowledging your long relationship.
That's how I feel about that ending, in his mind Obi-Wan is thinking "Goodbye, Old Friend" in a way he lost someone whom he has faced for the longest time and had a long time to deal with. Maul struggled so much and in the end he felt like the only thing let is to die by Obi-Wan's hands (again I guess). There's so much conflict and pain between the two that you can feel their emotions coming out. The greatest enemy that you have faced for the longest time can sometimes turn into your greatest rival and in the end as you look at them in their dying breath, you can't help but comfort them to relieve all that pain on both sides.
Obi-Wan feels empathy for Maul, because a lot of what they have been through comes down to the same source - Sidious. In that regard, they have that Batman/Joker-duality going on, bizar mirror images of each other. Especially since after everything he's been through (and yes, not the least of it at Maul's own hands), Obi-Wan could easily be just as hate-filled and vengeful as Maul himself. But he isn't, he trully has "risen above" that. Furthermore, don't forget that Obi-Wan is a true Jedi - he didn't kill Maul because he wanted to, it brings him no joy to end a life, even the life of his nemesis. He did it because he had to - as soon as Maul was starting to figure out Obi's TRUE reasons for being on Tattooine, he knew he had to eliminate this threat in defense of Luke (and the future of the Jedi AND the galaxy).

Many hated this. IMO this was executed perfectly. Two veterans engaging in mind games by doing saber stances.
The thing about animation is that your characters can move faster and break the laws of physics. So the greatest animated duel is one that could have been done live action without any issues.
Nah the movement is still very much animation, this wouldn’t be the same in live action
@@FullFatVideos I'm very confident in the fact that the trained professionals they got on the set (particularly in the prequels they did a stellar job with the choreo) could teach this to the actors like Hayden or Ewan and it'd be just as good

You see Maul realizing that Obi Wan took Qui Gonn's stance, you can see it in his eyes; Obi Wan knew exactly what Maul was going to do so he beat him so quickly. Also you didn't mention the post duel conversation, it's so impactful in my opinion: "He will avenge us", Maul is standing on the same side as Obi Wan in the fight against Sidious, who betrayed them both
This is absolutely my favorite duel as well. Obiwan at his best. I so want to see it play out in live action.

Also, Maul losing doesn’t necessarily mean he would die. Kenobi most likely didn’t even intend on killing him until he felt that Maul was a threat to Luke.

Rian Johnson: "Pfff! No, he's not."
The Last Jedi doesn't really contradict the prophecy, whether you look at it one of the three main ways of looking at it:
If by bringing balance to the force, the prophecy only means for the chosen one to destroy the Sith, then Luke accomplished that in ROTJ and completed the prophecy there and then. What came after was irrelevant to the prophecy.
If you assume the balance must extend to beyond the Sith, to the likes of the First Order and the dark side harnessed by Snoke and Kylo Ren, then Luke did that in his final act by keeping the Resistance alive. If he hadn't done that, the First Order would have wiped out the Resistance, the Jedi and even the legend of Luke Skywalker, leaving the galaxy in darkness. Luke preserved all of that, keeping the Resistance alive, giving the Jedi a second chance and spreading hope to the whole galaxy. In other words, he brought balance to the force.
And the third way is to assume Luke wasn't even the chosen one in the first place, making the discussion moot. Heck, the fourth way is to just write the whole prophecy off as a load of rubbish. The point of Obi Wan's stance in this scene was just that he believed Luke was the chosen one, not necessarily that he was. But honestly, that topic's for someone else to debate.

The themes, character development, conflicts, growth, lessons and challenges of both old and new characters are amazing. The new films have given us really powerful moments and really good characters. I'm perfectly happy with them.

@@wallie6 I'd say that's not true. Nothing from the original trilogy is undermined by the sequels. The sequels give the old characters new challenges and conflicts that endear them and show their strength even more than they have in the past.
I'll talk about the characters at length, but this'll be a long comment. I like talking about this stuff because I'm a nerd. There's a TL;DR at the bottom though. I'll only talk about the new characters because I'm assuming that's what you mean.
Rey's power is naturally very strong and her physical combat skills are already honed from years of surviving as a scavenger. There's no need to demonstrate physical growth for her as it's already been covered enough for the level of feats that's she's accomplished. Luke got away with far more when he took down the Death Star despite never having sat in an X-Wing. And by contrast, Luke needed training on Dagobah before going to fight Darth Vader because as a farmboy with no swordfighting experience, he would never have been able to hold his own. With Rey, that issue is already circumvented, in a way that's proportional to her achievements.
So physical growth is established to be irrelevant, as the main focus of Rey's growth is in her inability to let go of her parents, something that ties her down whether she wants to go back to Jakku or to fight for the Resistance. TLJ establishes that she's looking for her place in the galaxy and that whole film put her through a lot of hard disappointment that really tests where she thinks her value should lie. That's what's great about Rey; something that we saw from early on in TFA. When her loyalty is tested, whether its an offer of more food than she's ever seen in her life for a droid she's just met, or an offer of power alongside someone who understands her, free from the burdens of the past in exchange for the lives of her friends, Rey will not betray anyone. She's beaten down emotionally and the key thing she's always holding onto is continuously ripped away from her, once quite directly by Maz and again even more directly by Kylo Ren. The first time, she runs. The second time, she fights. Her growth is in finding and choosing her place in the galaxy for herself, not in hoping that a Luke Skywalker or Han Solo will come along and show her what she needs to be. She finds her own family and learns to fight for them on her own terms, and this is coming from a lifetime of being alone, so they are everything she's ever had at this point.
I'm going to defend Finn, but I feel like I shouldn't have to. I hope this doesn't sound snarky - it's not meant to be - but Finn is just an obviously well written character, impressively often showing his conflict more than telling. From the start you can just see his disillusionment as a stormtrooper even before he clarifies the choice he made to abandon the FO later. He finds friends in Poe and Rey, the former of which gives him a name and the latter of which gives him... well, a lot of things. Love, hope, admiration, respect, friendship, etc. Finn's main commitment throughout TFA is just 1) Escape the First Order and 2) Protect Rey. That's all he cares about. He's afraid of the FO and their power but TFA shows us him putting that aside to save Rey.
TLJ then picks Finn up exactly as he was, only really concerned with goals 1) and 2). He likes the people of the Resistance and respects what they do, but he sees them as a lost cause and tries to leave in order to keep REy from getting wrapped up in their losing battle. But then he meets Rose, a girl who values the lives of everyone, even animals, hates oppression and cares deeply about others. Through his journey with her, she opens Finn's eyes to the broader galaxy, to the reason the Resistance fight. Meanwhile DJ shows Finn that the galaxy isn't just made of good guys and bad guys, that there's plenty of grey in the galaxy. Finn's mission was to save the Resistance and Rey by proxy, but his experience doing so sympathises him to the cause of the Resistance to the point where he identifies as one and was willing to lay down his life for them. His journey is clearly visible from a good-hearted yet cowardly ex-stormtrooper to a proud self-sacrificing member of the Resistance.
Poe is kinda just a nice guy in TFA. To be honest, I could leave it there and be happy. The scene where Finn and Poe steal a TIE fighter is probably one of the most pure scenes in the franchise and a really sweet start to a really good friendship. Poe's role isn't huge but for what it is, it's really memorable not just as an incredible pilot but as a kind gung-ho Resistance hero who kind of represents the individuality the First Order are so opposed to. His relationship with BB-8 is super cute too.
But then TLJ also lets us see more of what Poe is like in a military setting. Poe is a gung-ho hero, but that doesn't translate well into leadership and as a commanding authority in the Resistance he's forced to learn the consequences of treating everything like an action movie. He can't always take matters into his own hands and sometimes pushing for a victory can cost a lot of lives, sometimes more than they're worth. He learns the price of leadership and the value of trusting those of higher rank to make the right decision. This isn't a lesson that's universally applicable, but there's still good value in it. Poe's impulsiveness and half-baked plan costs the Resistance dearly, but from that he understands that there's a time and a place to make sacrifices.
I'm realising only now that you're only really asking me to describe why I like them, not so much an essay on their respective character developments. Though their growth does tie into why I like them and I'll make my reasons more clear in the TL;DR
TL;DR I like the characters because they're just wonderful, fun, caring, _good_ people. They each have their own repective flaws and growth but their experiences not only make them stronger but band them together. I like Finn and Rey because their story is about them finding family where they never had one before and choosing again and again to be nicer than anyone has ever been to them first and foremost because they know what it's like to be discarded and mistreated. They've lived that life and now they're finding people who honestly care about them and are now rising up to fight for the happiness they deserve but have never been given. I like Poe and Rose because they're further examples of how much simply caring about others and showing love can go along way, and that's what the Resistance fights for. These characters represent learning from failure, the value of humble kindness and growing to have faith in hope even when things are at their darkest.
That's why I love these characters.
This is still one of the best, but was recently blown away by the 7th season of Clone Wars with the dual between Ashoka and Maul, which utilized live action, motion capture.
I also like how Kenobi doesn't actually "kill" Maul. Maul was so hellbent on enacting revenge that it was the only thing keeping him alive after taking so much damage. The instant the tool of his revenge was destroyed, he just gave up. The rage that kept him going just dissapeared and he was done.
*Maul (facing Old Kenobi):* "...Did they replace your voice actor?"
*Kenobi:* "They didn't. But we were meant to think they did."
*Maul:* "W-wait! Why don't I understand that reference?!"

around 4 years ago when I first saw the fight, I was like "bruh why is it so quick its not as interesting as the one in TPM or ROTS". But as I get older, I begin to understand and appreciate how beautifully set and meaningful this fight was.
One other great thing about this duel is it happens where everything started. Obi-Wan and Qui-Gonn first encountered Maul on Tattooine not far from the town Anakin was in. And here it ends again.
You gotta wonder. Will they remake this duel in live action in the upcoming Obi-Wan TV series with Ewan McGregor and Ray Park retaking their roles once again?
It sounds awesome on paper, but considering how beautifully it was pulled off in "Rebels", it'd be very hard to justify its existence.

Nah the light sabers felt to "rubbery", is that the right word idk. But the light saber effects they added for that fight made it look weird to me. This fight is still far better.
