Hey, all! Thank you so much for checking this out. My bandmates and I put in a lot of time and energy to these as a way of sharing music we love and possibly helping others. As always, I'm never saying this is how anyone else *should* play. It is just my perspective and approach for anyone who might find it interesting or useful. *CORRECTIONS: I reaaaaally try to be attentive to detail, but I found a notational error that made it into the video. D'OH!!! The error was in the second to the last chord of the "Chords to cue end" section (17:55). It is written as E#º/B (yes, E# is what we call it in this context of F#). The bass note I'm playing actually is a B# (yes, B# in this context) at the 10th fret, not B on the 9th, as I mistakenly wrote. So that makes the chord an E# min #4/B#. But the E#º/B that was written in the notation also sounds great, so you can't go wrong!
*I also mistakenly said "C" as opposed to "C#" at 18:05. This stuff drives me crazy, but I'll always at least own up to my mistakes and correct them.

Your apprehension, Gretchen, is quite perceptible, along the lesson, but don't worry..! Apprehension is generated by insecurity or by the will of "do" things, as good as possible, toward perfection..! I guess yours, is the second case, mainly, over the first..! P.S. Man you just kill on this and the extended solo section yall wrote is just BRILL!! I never understood why the original track was only a couple of minutes , it's the greatest riff of all time!!
Thanks for putting this together. You present a lot of great information-aspects of playing and learning that I’ve simply not heard anywhere else, and illustrate your points creatively and logically. (A nice trick, being able to do that.) I love your idea about writing solos and letting your own ideas meld into phrases that can be used for improv, and the idea of learning solos-kind of-is fantastic, too. Anyway, thank you again, and best wishes for health and good times in 2021. 🤘🏻

A lot of this is over my head. But it’s incredibly interesting to hear you explain. Love you and your band. Great job of explaining. It’s always great to hear someone totally on top of their game, which you obviously are.
Great tips on cuing the band that the end of the sole has arrived. I've always found it very hard to improvise and maintain the count. Your method is a great way to bring everyone back.

Hey there what another brilliant lesson .. so many helpful hints to muso's of all levels & bands trying to get it together .. I was once in a band for Too long .. lol where as Trio it should have been easy .. playing original material we could improvise .. The singer & bass player was sickeningly talented a bit like Sting .. & he could sing & play anything .. even using a fretless bass from the moment he picked it up like he had been using it for years .. Me I have always had to work at it aside from writing lyrics which has always come easily .. So as gtr & bass we just needed to listen to each other & we did a lot of dancing around & to the detriment of my knees now I used to slide along the floor . I did all the Hendrix tricks behind the neck & back & showing off in general .. But our Drummer & Transport ... could not swing would resolutely ignore any visual cues & once played a set facing into a triangular corner of wall .. Lol He was a lovely guy & really good looking at first .. But also too fond of drinking b4 & after & during the show .. ok Bonham could get away with that .. until he couldn't .. so sad .. our drummer also insisted on the long drum solo which often left him almost alone .. even his girlfriend would take a bathroom break or go to the bar & I once was able to do both b4 he began to flag .. even worse to those who knew .. if he made a mistake he would go back & try to get it right ... you couldn't even call it Jazz .. The point of all this .. Being in a good band is about more than just owning the Van .. if you don't all try to pay as a team someone has to go . I had to tell him & he never forgave me . His girlfriend slapped me for breaking his heart .. oh well .. I guess since Clem started the band with you .. you know what it's like . You have to at least like each other .. After John bonham died .. They just said well thats it . & so without you guys a lot of people would not get to hear the music loud & proud like it should be .. You guys are the best .. Thank you all so much .. Love ya stay safe in these troubled times of covid .

Hi Gretchen, Great info. My thing is to ignore set scales (Dorian, blues, Locrian,etc), I just figure out what fits within the framework of the song structure. I find that more helpful and it gives me some freedom. Is that scholastically ignorant? Maybe. Does it work? Yes,indeed.
There are certainly no rules, and whatever works for you is great! I'm just sharing how I approach all this. :-) And I do a LOT by ear as well. A number of the ideas I used were first by ear (such as using the Phrygian dominant). I later analyzed them so I could convey what I was doing in this lesson.

Is the Phryigian Dominant a mode of the Harmonic minor? That tone and a half leap from G to A#

A lot of good bands sound better live & play better, longer better versions,than the studio recording... that solo improve was nice!
