Joe hung out with Danny and learned a lot from him.
I have been playing off and on for around 50 years and i never started until my late teens. I never could put the required time into it to get passed the halfway point intermediate stage. But I know enough to know that Gatton and Bonamassa are vertuoso players. Whether you like their style or not thats your deal. But these guys answer to nobody. They are truly proud members of the greatest to ever play.

I was a singer-drummer with both Danny Gatton and Roy Buchanan, early 70's. In addition to being a hell of a guitar player, Joe has something neither Danny or Roy ever had. He's a good singer and writes original songs. That counts for a hell of a lot.

@@pgreenx I was the most sought after "white" DC studio drummer for pop recordings at the time. The DC music scene in 67 was mostly racially divided. Not intentionally, the black scene just was another world we mostly didn't know.
Just outta high school, I was in one of the first "mixed" groups to play the trendy Georgetown district.

All true, but something that Joe doesnt have is the ability to write good songs. His lyrics are pretty bad. He is a great guitarist and singer, so not being a hater just being honest how i see it. Joe sings and writes like a blues stereotype, i think he never found a way to write how he really feels, you can tell by how he talks and looks there is pain and conflict in him but never really found a way to translate it lyrically into something authentic to him. But to each their own, and hes successful with what he does. Very knowledgeable about guitar gear and playing.

After watching this video, my esteem for Mr. Bonamassa has moved deep into positive territory.
I am so sad when I learn about a great musician that's no longer with us. I would have LOVED to have seen Danny G. perform. Grateful to have seen Mr. B play!

You guys who slam Joe..I would just love to hear what you guys can do. Joe is amazing and he always gives credit to where he learned everything from. He promotes Danny, Rory, Robin and all the other great underrated giants and personally I think he is a giant himself, bringing real feel and dynamics to a new generation. Can you play? Joe Bonamassa is not phoney at all, he's written some awesome songs, and is willing to step out the box and try anything. He's one of the most genuine guys out there....

It's just not a good look for a rich white boy who's Dad owns a vintage guitar shop in upstate New York to play the blues. Somewhere along the lines of where all these little kids like Quinn Sullivan , Taz, Joe when he was a kid started wowing crowds with the fact they could play at a young age.. we forgot that blues was a feeling and started to accept blues of today which is emotionless recycled pentatonic scales played at speed. Joe had access to private lessons from greats, access to the greatest guitars available anywhere, all it required from him was a little dedication. He oozes his influences in his playing to the point where he doesn't even have a style. He barely even had to work to get to where he is today. If Joe is the ambassador for blues, no wonder the genre is now dead. Plus he just has this shitty yuppie air about him that no one can seem to stand. With his sun glasses and suits on stage like some kind of egomaniac.... while playing cover tunes. Joe could be so much more then he is, but he isn't.

Danny Gatton was a virtuoso, and Joe was lucky to have connected with him. Learned how to hybrid finger pick by Danny's instructional videos and you can, too.

I used to see him in College Park, MD in 1974-1976. I think mostly at Italian Gardens (was that the name of that place). I wish I knew what I was seeing and hearing at the time. He was just Danny Gatton to me.

I had a feeling, as I was watching this, that if I scrolled down to the comments there would be... ah yes. Those internet critics who are so quick to slam and bash and point out every slight mistake made while of course, I say with confidence, are unable to play ANYTHING that Mr. B just played in this video on an electric let alone an acoustic! He's just up there sharing some great memories about a great influence of his. Enjoy the story, enjoy the playing. Don't ruin it with your negativity.

How is it that Danny Gatton is not spoken of in the same manner as Hendrix? Danny is simply one of the most incredible guitarists to walk this earth! Everyone should know him and be humbled.
You are spot on. Danny is never on Best guitarist polls. Probably because he looks the least likely guy in the world to be a guitar god he looks and dresses like the guy who,s come to fix your roof but he could show them bullshit shredders what real guitar playing is all about

Saw JB at the Lyric in Baltimore. Sold out. Fabulous! What he just played on that acoustic is phenomenal! I've played/performed for 50 years, hard rock, but NOT at JB's caliber.
Super cool stuff! I'd love to see the Danny Gatton influence a bit more in JB's albums and live performances. On Joe's last CD Driving Toward the Daylight it was evident in the solo on the original track Heavenly Soul, but that's about it.
Joe is one of the hardest working guys in the business.

But all these people that constantly bash Joe videos in the comment section just reek of jealously. If you don't like someone, why are you even listening to a video where this person is the subject? I think I understand it. This is supposedly a story about Danny Gatton but it turns into Joe showing off his licks. Of course, that’s why he’s on stage - to play. He just always seems a bit up himself. I think he’s an awkward guy and sometimes expresses himself in not necessarily the clearest way.

I must have heard/seen Danny play a few dozen times around DC, from 10 feet away. Little did I know that "little" Joe was possibly hanging out right next to me the whole time.... of course my jaw was dragging across the floor in a puddle of my own drool and my ears were bleeding, so it's doubtful he would have gotten very close :/
** There are Thousand of Excellent guitar players and or musicians that will never be widely publicly known. example - Buck Owens and Roy Clark would not let Ronnie Stoneman upstage them on their show Hee Haw. She could out pick and fiddle either one of them 7 ways to Sunday supposedly ! She taught my Stepfather how to play guitar when he was six on their porch in Capitol Heights. He could outplay 9 out 10 clowns and never made a name outside of local clubs for 40 years. Bobby Lloyd. GOD Bless

anybody who disses Joe Bonamassa is sadly mistaken. He has unbelievable chops and KNOWS his guitar. Since we are doing comparisons, No One is better than Doyle Dkles. They are different. No parlor tricks with Joe or Doyle
There's no sense in comparing but I will say I was privileged to sit 2 ft away from Doyle Dykes three different times when he was a clinician for Taylor guitars basically doing demos and music stores in Oregon and Florida and other places simply after the place they closed down and remarkably there was only about 60 people in there and he's just doing ridiculous finger-picking and artificial harmonics and multiple piano parts and picking up different guitars going let's see what this one does?! Yep all of these guys are amazing let's just appreciate them

To all you Bonamassa critics - my guess is Danny Gatton would be pretty pissed at a lot of the comments here. It's probably a pretty safe bet to say none of you could shine either of their shoes.
I don't care about Bonamassa at all, he plays stiff and mechanical, musicality goes out every second I listen to him playing those licks and runs perfectly well but without any musicality. He's to the blues what Al Di Meola is to fusion, amazing players for sure, boring as hell with the interest of a computer that knows how to play guitar... maybe fascinating at the beginning, repetitive and meaningless in the end. Maybe you find that I'm hating the guy, but I'm not, I'm telling you what I think about his playing... maybe you're just a fanboy

I also wonder why you think you or Danny Gatton or anyone else should be the arbiter of how other people should feel about music. Nobody needs to be in a position to shine anybodys anything in order to have an educated, reasoned opinion about music or simply to be entitled to their own taste for whatever reasons.
That load of bollocks aside -- it appears to be a hallmark of the overly confident layman to dismiss the vital role of critique in the development of art works, artistic technique, the various fields of art in a broader sense and in the cultural spheres related to these fields, including the act and experience of audiencing, talking about and using art.
There appears to often be this rather moronic and inexplicable assumption that in order to get to say anything about anything you have to be better at it than whatever person doing it (whatever "better" is even supposed to mean, if you can't get quite specific about "better AT WHAT, FOR WHOM, IN WHAT CONTEXT and with reference WHAT SPECIFIC SET OF VALUES which we should care about FOR WHAT REASON in particular?")
I say that as someone who, from time to time, gets paid by top level artists to offer critique and sparring during the development of specific performances. Art is usually on a tight budget, so I doubt think they waste funds and precious production time, just so they have someone to shout "someone always has to criticize!!!" at.
A key part of that job is doing varous forms of audience research in order to get as much of a sense of the audience reception of specific aspects of a specific part of a performance as possible. We do this to understand and assess what we are setting in motion, how it affects people and why, so we can improve on what we are designing. We also do it because, regardless of whose shoes our audience have shone, we believe there is a chance we might learn something unexpected from the unique perspective of each member of the audience, which may greatly impact how we work with the show.
Critique is a preemptive measue to ensure that we don't discover on stage during some grand premiere, that we have bared our asses in a way we did not mean to.
Great he gives credit to those who helped make him who he is. Some players you never really hear talk much in detail about that stuff. Especially Malmsteen. I wish one day he'd just admit he basically copied Blackmore's stage moves and look along with a bit of Hendrix and copied Uli's harmonic minor stuff AND yellow strat and yet he always says oh, my influences were Bach and Mozart and yada yada. Yes, classical influenced his music a lot and his fast runs. But guitarists also influenced him. I didn't know Danny had anything to do with Joe but man, Joe really can do the country thing as evidenced here. Joe is really up there in probably the top 20 blues/rock players at this time. He's just settled in with those vocals on top. Super solid and can shred when he wants to.

I find it funny that so many people are hating on such a killer player. Generally people hate on what they cannot do. And I’m willing to bet every single person who’s making a bad comment about Joe can’t even hold his jock when it comes to playing guitar.

Danny Gatton was that Elliott Smith type...that Van Gogh type artist. People can read people. When an artist has some serious issues.......like say Syd Barrettt..they aren't just admired more, they are the best more. JBreem, Farlowe, Pass. But today Bonamassa, and Kotch could be some of the best players around; but yeah DG was a hurricane,earthquake, & tidle wave all in one...Bonamassa & Kotch smoke Brad Paisley .
There's still miles away from what Joe demonstrated here to where Danny was ! Sorry to say that but it is true.
There was a question "how did gatton get so good?" Two things absolute talent and hard, hard work and dedication that's how. Any negative comments about these guys are just from people who are jealous, unhappy people who don't enjoy any thing positive. Just ignore them. THEY DON'T MATTER!

Bonamassa is one of the very best players out there today, so more power to him, but in my opinion, he focuses too much on electric blues - especially when he can peel off Gatton-esque runs like THAT. I wonder if it's a commercial calculation? Most people who aren't guitar aficionados would probably find electric blues more familiar & accessible.
So he should play more of what you want? Too bad. He plays the music he wants to play.

Yeah DG was DG, but today Bonamassa, and Kotch are some fine players. Hilland, Paisley, good; and EJohnson, Morse great.
IMO Joe is more impressive on an acoustic guitar then he is on the electric guitar

I've liked Danny Gatton for a lot longer; maybe 30 yrs or so since i first heard his stuff.
I didn't know that Gatton taught Bonamassa. It kind of figures to me now though. Bonamassa and Gatton are guitar gods.

If you think Joe here is even remotely close to 10% the player Gatton was you really need to open your ears.
