The Rebel Turner is my go to turner whenever I need some ideas to facilitate my turning projects, he never lets me down. Excellent teacher. My turning is improving daily, thanks to you Rebel. Thanks for sharing your knowledge.
Al, I just love the start of your videos, seeing your smile and hearing your voice. Love the turning and teaching you do too, especially giving us your thoughts and ideas. Thanks! Another day in paradise indeed.
this was a fabulous video , I just got finished making a lidded bowl or round box whichever you prefer and I have to say your simple method of cutting the lid worked perfect ,my lid could not fit better , thanks again for a very informative and great video. Sgt. Dave Thomas
@@AlFurtado You dont need to measure anything; not diameters, not width of cut, beyond what is needed to make your parting cut in the middle, leaving both sides. This leaves the perfect diameter tenon on the lid, and as long as you keep the mortise no bigger than the slight revealed rise on the other side, the mortise will be an exact match for the lid's tenon. Also since the lid and base are so close together, you have an almost exact match in the grain of the wood!! No calipers needed, and only one or two tools; and the whole operation takes less than 5 minutes if everything goes well. As I said before, simple genius!
Thank you so much Albert for another great video and apologies for only catching up with it now.First I'm delighted you are back at work and all I can say is lucky employer who gets you.The turning was great and especially keeping the parting tool cuts wider than normal as I've had a few jams and fortunately the motor cut out before any real harm was done.I'm glad you are proud of having European ancestry, especially Portuguese, the greatest sailors and navigators the world has seen.Best wishes,Alan.
Alan Simpson WOW Alan for such a great compliment. as far as the employer being lucky I hope that is the case because I am not very political about my out bursts to authority if I believe they are wrong or push my buttons the wrong way LOL. I hope I don't have to tell too many people off
+Al Furtado Don't worry about that Albert as I seem to be out of the same mould as yourself when it comes to people pushing my buttons the wrong way.Alan.
Al, another great tip! Thanks for sharing. And for what it's worth, I've turned 2 natural edge bowls this weekend using your "roll of tape" tip to finish the bottom... it works flawlessly! I will definitely try this lid fit tip on my next box. Thanks again and keep up the great work! Looking forward to your next post!
Mike Waldt Thank you my Friend I hope it helps those that needed it. Take care as well. I guess I will be taking some time away from wood turning as I am starting a new job in an old company tomorrow. It should be interesting to be back on the road after such a long time. Take care my friend I hope to still do some turnings on the occasional weekend.
Interesting video, Al. The box looks great and has a beautiful grain. The explanation for the lid I find well explained = Lightweight and easy. That I even understood. -D
Nice little box. It is interesting to me that, though I have been turning for only two months, when I turned my first box, this week, I used exactly the same technique to get a good fit on the lid. I guess great minds think alike. I turned a tenon on the top of the lid before parting it off, so I could put it in the chick and hollow out the inside. I jammed the lid into the box to turn off the tenon and finish the top. I ended up with a nice friction fit and a perfect grain match on my piece of Japanese maple.
Hi Al! Very nice box. Very interesting method for doing the fit. One suggestion, you may want to be just a bit shy with the parting tool when establishing the internal fit, so that you have a tiny bit of wood for the sanding. Thank you for sharing! Cheers! Daniel
Daniel Vilarino Thanks Daniel I hope it helps. I agree that there should be room for sanding but if you start with a perfect fit to start off with, sanding it after will not make it less it will only remove the pop if there was any. The idea was to show a measurement method what you do and how you use it is a personal preference.
Daniel Vilarino Daniel I know we are very different in our approaches you in one hand are very precise with all your measurements witch is great and on the other hand I am very free and let things happen as I don't think any of this is rocket science and should just be fun.
Good tips. A logical and thoughtful way to size the top and box. I recently tried reverse turning so I could see into a small, deep bowl. It worked well, although at first, tool positioning felt odd but I didn't have to lean way over the lathe to see what I was doing. My lathe sits against a wall so I can't turn from the backside. Was this wood green when you turned it?
Great suggestion for getting the right fit. I've tried the reverse cutting with mixed results, so I tend to not use it. Hooked scrapers don't work on reverse.
Great technique.. I have always had trouble with lids I think i am going to try your method.. Can't believe i didn't think of it before its like a given.. lol.. So was the smell of the wood any different???
Jimmy Mead Thanks for watching and commenting, sometimes the simplest solutions are right in front of us Oops this video took a different turn and I forgot all about the smell but it was there just not as prominent.
Lenny M Hey I guess you woke up LOL. yeah but what I was showing off on what how it fit right off the bat and generally you have to do small touches after the finial is mounted and buffing this just showed that the fit was good enough to even use it as a jamb chuck. but you're right I could have done the final cuts and sanded before parting it off but what fun would have that been?
A really nice video ! I'm a very beginner and like to ask you, how you shape or finish the inner side of the lid in this method ? (Can't imagine this) Thanks in advance! Wolfgang
ishiprog I am sorry I lost the footage on the lid but I made a jamb that I fit the lid tight in it and turned the bottom and sanded it I will do another box soon and make sure I show that
Catching up on my videos now I'm back from vacation Al, how's work going? I should really start working on that too, if I want to keep paying for my house... :) That is a fine box and a good technique, I should really make some more boxes, I always say I like useful things more then decorative turnings... Thanks again for sharing my friend!!
+Yuval Lahav WN my friend I hope all went well and also wish you best of luck with a new job hunt. I know it's not you field and don't know how the industry is there in Italy but in the US construction is strong and there is a shortage of construction professionals. Take care
Thank you buddy, I know we'll see less of you and your vids now, but man, I'm just glad for you you're back out there doing something you love. Wish I could be there with you, learning and growing. I've never considered myself a professional at anything, but I sure love to become proficient in man made arts.
+Yuval Lahav we can do what we set our minds to do most of the time. Heck I am no professional either but people think I am and I am not going to tell them they are wrong LOL
Al I thought you had quit turning. I have not seen one of your videos for over two weeks. Today I went to my channel and looked up all I had subscribed to and found you like that. Do you know why I have not been getting your videos? By the way I really enjoyed this one.
+Frank Ingram Quit never but I have to slow down due to the many hours I put at the job and the demand. I think Google and UA-cam changed something in notifications because I am not getting emails saying people commented on a video or getting updates of my friends uploads either. I only see them on the little bell top right of page
+Rich Gage Thanks Rich in this case I was using Brazilian Pepper tree invasive to Florida but more a weed than anything and not something sold commercially
Hey Al: 100m? I didn't know Florida was metric! But I will bet that it is sold here in Canada as 4" jaws! Nice that everything is the same everywhere! ;>) Aren't cow pastures where those magic type mushrooms grow? Best be watching how much of that stuff you do... or you could be a Pepper too! ;>) Thanks for sharing Larry
The Tiny Trailer Workshop Well what do you expect out a European? LOL. I figure since they are sold as 100 MM I would keep it that way just as the mid size are sold as 50mm I don't know it's actual measurement in inches LOL. Yes I have raided that cow pasture and I didn't get any mushrooms can you believe it? I think my area is deprived
+Dan Michaud Hello and thanks. Yes even though I messed up on the intro a bit LOL I have put a cartoon doing some intros and I just put the sound effects and things flying at the screen as a new part of the intro. I must say that the cartoon intro is pretty time consuming and I might not be able to invest that time anymore because of my work schedule.
so I think I see what you are getting at: the part is wide enough to become the bottom of the lid AND the indicator for where the entrance into your box should start!
+Seth Warner Yes I tried to be clear but I think I cut too much on the edit to really show what I wanted to LOL. when you start a new cut with the parting toll it leaves a mark that you can use for size of lid or opening.
I meant to show it at the time but had lost the footage. I am pretty sure I just placed it back on the jaws on a roll of tape than sanded the very middle of it free hand
The Rebel Turner is my go to turner whenever I need some ideas to facilitate my turning projects, he never lets me down. Excellent teacher. My turning is improving daily, thanks to you Rebel. Thanks for sharing your knowledge.

Al, I like the nice approach you use for sizing the lid. Pretty much full proof. Simplified and to the point. Good job. Thank you for sharing.
+Jack Maravola It works I just hate to see people going with calipers on things that were right in front of them.
this was a fabulous video , I just got finished making a lidded bowl or round box whichever you prefer and I have to say your simple method of cutting the lid worked perfect ,my lid could not fit better , thanks again for a very informative and great video. Sgt. Dave Thomas
Thank you again. Nothing more satisfying than hearing someone say they learned something that works for them...... Take care
Virginia says this piece is gorgeous!
Thumbs up!!!
Clark and Virginia
Such simple GENIUS!!! This needs to be taught to all turners an essential part of all boxes!
Thank you my friend. what was it that makes it so worthy?
@@AlFurtado You dont need to measure anything; not diameters, not width of cut, beyond what is needed to make your parting cut in the middle, leaving both sides. Joe B Thanks Joe I am glad it helped. There will be occasions that it will not work but in general it works very well in most situations
Thank you for sharing, great tip and great turning! I'll try that on my next box.
Lou Turcotte Thank you Lou I am glad you liked it and hope you can use it.
Nice box and a nice teaching secession AL . That will help me with future turnings.
John Bittner Thanks for watching I am glad you liked it and you will be able to use it.
Excellent tip for lid fitting Al, and a beautiful box into the bargain.
Take care

Al Furtado I have ruined a lot of 'perfect fit' lids trying to clean them up with sandpaper! Nice job and a beautiful piece of work.
Al Furtado The very best of luck in your new job Al....don't be a stranger my friend.
Take care
Mike
Gerald Jensen Thank you Gerald I am glad this was a useful tutorial
tom gallagher Thank you Tom that is a great compliment that I was able to help you solve a lid problem for you Happy Turning.
great idea al
i'll try it in the weekend

Excellent tutorial with another wonderful result. Thanx Al
Thank you again my friend
Jus had to say again; this simplicity is genius!
Thank you my friend for watching and commenting. I wouldn't go that far but I appreciate it. Take care
Interesting video, Al.
The box looks great and has a beautiful grain.

Günter Schöne Thank you Gunter I am glad you liked it and that it was easy enough to understand that eve you understood it LOL. Thanks again my friend
I love it and I love the background music a good lesson to thanks
Nice video Al: well demonstrated and explained, Best wishes. Harry

HEHEHE Yeah great minds think alike. I know everyone shows the painful method of checking it with calipers even those tat can't read them LOL
Elegantly finish, so beautiful!
I guess the bugs make the tree have those brilliant colors or if just varies from tree to tree. Nice box and thanks for the lid tip.
John Bare Thanks John it looks that way. I have a couple of pieces of the healthy tree and see what the environment does to it over time.

Nice trick there Al. One thing wouldn't you do the touch ups on the lid before removing it? Just wondering...

lol "depthness" that was hilarious
Glad you got a laugh out of it LOL
How did the inside of the lid get done?
I meant to show it at the time but had lost the footage. I am pretty sure I just placed it back on the jaws on a roll of tape than sanded the very middle of it free hand
Niiiiiice
