Wow Al...You sure turned that old blank board into a poplar platter that anyone would be proud to own...! May you and your loved ones have a great safe day....!
Thank you very much for watching and commenting my friend. I could swear I had answered to these comments before but don't see them as posted today. Till the next one. Take care
Another great piece Al, you certainly transformed a rough looking piece of wood into something beautiful. You have inspired me to be a little more daring with my turning. Today I was kind of a rebel, used a piece of Yew, that had been chainsawed into a rough shape. It had cracks, the bark I left not at the top, but at the bottom, so that when it was completed as a bowl the top wasn’t round but was uneven. Watching your videos has increased my confidence. So thank you, and I will keep watching.
Thank you very much my friend. I am glad to see you liked it I am glad to hear that your level of confidence is increasing as well I urge you examine any cracks and always be on alert and know that the possibility of separation could happen without much of notice. Don't forget being a Rebel does not mean don't be safe.. Take care
Thank you very much my Friend. Yeah My wife had that blank in hand for the fire pit. I am glad I tackled her down for it LOL I appreciate it. Take care
I have been watching you for a while but this is my first comment ...Great work,I love Poplar . You never know what colors you are going to get out of it. Beautiful for landscapes and seascapes .. Very nice shape on the platter.... Thank you
Thanks for commenting on this one. I never thought Poplar would be good for any of those uses. For landscape I thought it would attract to many bugs....Live and learn ............thanks
First of all.. Thank you for the reply . You are a true craftsman and artiest, and I am honored ...I meant using the colors in the wood for landscapes, like a natural painting ... But I have recently found out termites do not like popular so I have built a outside garden door out of it...We will see how it holds up.. I have a video series on my channel of me rebuilding an oriental bridge,if you have the time to watch...Again....Thank's
Hi Al, A unique piece and if I may say so,I agree with your wife as to it's design! The "scene" inside of the bowl is beautiful and the red glitter adds just the right touch! Thanks for the video! Tom

Finding the beauty in any piece of wood, and turning it into something wonderful seems to be your specialty. That is a very beautiful piece! Even though I saw the pictures posted on Facebook I did not know that the red resin was in there until I watched the video. Bringing it so much more Beauty.
I will always be waiting for your next project! You are a great Turner and I am just learning. I hope to learn so much more from you and others like Carl Jacobson's UA-cam channel. Even laughing with NZ Woodworks! I think if you and Jimmy Diresta got together there would be nothing you couldn't make! The Unstoppable Duo! LOL! Keep turning my friend!
That's a very interesting piece. I always try to picture what the person is attempting to make and most of the time I'm surprised when I get to see the end product. I really like the two totally different grain patterns and was suprised to see the red glitter works well with the piece. Thanks for sharing another piece of art. Keep up the good work.
That is a great platter hiding inside that ugly piece of wood and I'm glad you found it. That's a roll over, square platter. I like your roll overs, lip overs, and round overs and any other overs you do. You must have a barn full of turnings somewhere. Great turn my friend, Lee

Thank you very much for watching and commenting my friend. WOW I have seen some Natural edge Poplar that shocked me and left me in awe but never seen the tree Till the next one. Take care
Thank you very much for watching and the nice compliment. Well I suggest you send me those burls and let me the judge of that LOL my friend. Till the next one. Take care
Beautiful work Al. I love the glitter you put in as it looks like it was part of the tree sap. Very nice piece, very inspiring. Cheers, from Paul, Salisbury East, South Australia.
We have seen this vid before Al, watched it again and really enjoyed it. Having had a go at a square platter, I realise how hard it is to keep the thickness the same across the whole diameter ie, quarter inch. Top skills again Al Kind Regards from Dave & Debbie, from New Zealand.
Debbie. I guess the advice I can give is to use your tool rest as a guide to see and to make sure the back and already cut piece is touching the same spot on the tool rest. If not loosen up the chuck a bit and make adjustments before cutting the inside of the piece.I hope that helps.
Nice piece, Al. You do you better than anyone I know. Personally I would have gone for a higher gloss, and likely destroyed a beautiful piece. You inspire.
I like that you dwelled on careful tightening of your Chuck. I turn smaller pieces, but it's important to cinch each point. That wood has a split personality with those two grains! Cool platter!
Thank you very much for watching and commenting my friend In this case there wasn't much of a chance of that wood spitting. All the grain was solid and the color difference was from what faced up when it held up boats in a dry dock. Study the wood before you turn. Till the next one. Take care
You know Al I passed up some tulip wood once because someone said it was too plain. I then had a chance to get some a second time and did. It was anything but plain. Your piece proves it again. Lovely piece and I like the sand and clouds description the best. Take care my friend and do a kindness Mark
Thank you very much for watching and commenting my friend. Well Mark that is a shame that you discarded a wood because of what someone said. I guess you haven't seen many of my videos as I turn anything. My saying is "Never burn before you turn" You might want to remember that for the next questionable wood. What do you have to loose other than further your experience?Till the next one. Take care
Thank you so much as always. I like the idea that you watch me turn some pieces I wish I could work them more in a personal basis.. I wish I could put them into a box and distribute them amongst my admires. Maybe some day. See you on the next one I hope
Thank you very much for watching and commenting my friend. Yeah we all know we have to listen once in a while LOL. I could swear I had answered to these comments before but don't see them as posted today. Till the next one. Take care
Al, what a beautiful piece out of a bit of "scrap" timber! Scrap to anyone but a woodturner! I have never had the "pleasure" of working in poplar in over 40 years of woodworking, and if I didn't know better I would have thought your gouge was blunt! my god the poplar seemed to be extremely hard. Is it normally as hard to work as it looked or was it just a case of and old piece of timber hardened with age? Anyway keep the videos coming, and greetings from England ,Sam Rod Ian
Al, You, Sir, are one heck of a woodworker. Your videos are mesmerizing ! Have you ever found a piece of Russian Olive big enough to turn ? Also, do you sell any of your vases or bowls ? Thank you for all your efforts to put these videos out for people to enjoy.
Beautiful piece Al. I kept looking at sand colour as if it was at the bottom half. Looks like a stormy sky over a desert. I noticed you used YG on the bare wood, did you finish it with "shine juice"? I've not had much luck using shellac/sealer before YG. Maybe I will try the next piece without using sealer. Generally I use Triple E & finish with Shellawax. Would appreciate knowing what you used. Anyways , always a pleasure to watch you. Very best regards from the UK. Geof
Thank you very much for watching and commenting my friend. Well I do like to turn in the morning hours but I only posted this in the morning turned after work LOL. Till the next one. Take care
ok i am sitting here thinking red glitter and epoxy then you say what i am thinking. it looks good doe.s not stand out like a sore thumb but, gives it contrast. turned out to be a nice looking bowl. thank you for the video
Thank you very much for watching and commenting my friend. WOW that is amazing. I was doubtful about it at first but the end results seemed to have worked. Take care
A very niece piece. Curious when you mounted the nearly finished piece to remove the tenon, how did you re-mount/attach the piece to the lathe? A vacuum chuck or something else?
Sorry I didn't show my method here. 99% of me reverse turning in done between centers. I place a felt pad on my chuck and it's always a sure thingI hope that helps but you can see that method on most of my videos
I didn't think there was a chance in heck that you would turn that "pigs ear" into anything...but as usual you did. I've never tried a square bowl. Is the secret to those even edges, finding the exact center before you start? Thank Al.
Thank you very much for watching and commenting I've had a couple but ended up giving them away to relatives or friends but have never sod a favorite. Till the next one. Take care
I really like the final design, Al. And the wood has just enough rustic characteristics so we still know it's a Rebel Turner piece. Nicely done!

Thanks Thomas but to achieve a high gloss on anything with wings better look into a non rub finish. very hard on the knuckles.
Rebel Turner yeah, french polish maybe, but that could take a few hours of rubbing over several days.
Way to long a process for me I like to just get it done
Rebel Turner yeah I know that. I don't think I would have the patience required for a French polish either.
Al , excellent shaped platter with-good grain pattern .
Thank you very much for watching and commenting. Till the next one. Take care
Sent you a PM on Facebook.
beautiful platter Al
Thank you
Very good looking platter and has given me the kick in the arse to go and use my bowl gouge as its one tool I cant as yet use.
