I have seen bowl after bowl, but you just blew me away with this one. Never seen one like it in 20 years of turning. Keep trying these for the rest of us.
I’m not turning wood, I’m not even close to working with wood, but I find myself looking at these videos of yours, especially when I’ve got a lot to do and secretly wish I did something else for a living. I enjoy the ”slow” transformation of the logs. It’s so relaxing and you make such beautiful things. Thank you!
AN ABSOLUTELY GORGEOUS BOWL!!! YOUR CREATIVITY WITH NATURE IS AWE INSPIRING AL!!! STAY SAFE AND STRONG MY FRIEND AND THANK YOU AGAIN FOR SHARING YOUR WONDERFUL CREATIONS AND TIME WITH US!!!
Well Al, definitely worth watching this one. I wasn't sure part way through but as always you definitely delivered by the end. Lots going on, torching really gave it a character of its own. Thumbs up from me my friend. Regards from the UK 🇬🇧. Geof
hey Al it's your old pal Sargent Dave ,and it was a great pleasure once again to watch your genius in creating beautiful art work ,Big Al you are da man
Out of all of the videos that I have watched your turn. This is for sure the most beautiful bowl I have seen. You are a wonderful turner and I hope you do many more videos.
Beautiful bowl and love the torching effect. My husband is not a wood turner but did other woodworking projects and he would use the torch for beautiful effects.
Love the scorched area with the wood patterns and the the bark is simply gorgeous. A fantastic and unique piece Al , and yet another superb video! Cheers mate, Bram
Hi Al, Well you knocked it out of the ball park with this one!!! It's really not a bowl but rather a piece of true art! Burning the bowl,,,,especially the inside made the grain pop which accents the entire piece! Well done! Thanks for the video! Tom
super nice, Al! i am not a wood turner, but i am a wood carver & i have used a propane torch on occations like you just did, & like the results. keep em coming, my friend
Another beautiful piece Al!!!! I just got the last of my tools yesterday and I can't wait to get started turning my first piece I hope one day I can be as good as you. I love watching your videos and I am learning so much from you! I will be setting up all my stuff this weekend and I hope in the next couple of weeks I can get turning!!!!!
Thank you my friend Wow I have not been able to pull myself together ever since I saw this. I really appreciate you taking the time to stop in Steve and hope all is well with you and your family. . sorry for the delay in answering Take care
This was amazing, Al, and inspired me to take a stab at my own! I always look forward to watching your videos and admiring your mastery of woodturning.
What a delight! The natural color of the wood is a nice yellowish I haven't seen before, but I wonder if torching the entire inside would be a nice effect too? Choices, choices. Safe travels.
I wasn't seeing the appeal while it was on the lathe in the 90 degree tilted position. However, when you first held the finished bowl in your hand, in it's normal orientation, was when its beauty was really revealed! Another fine example of your ability to extract the most from any piece of wood. Well done Al :)
It's a magma or larva bowl 😉, one of the nicest pieces I've seen you turn, I'll definitely be trying that shape when I next get some strong bark. Entertaining from start to finish. Pete
Another great video. As a woodworker myself I realize each piece you do whether its woodturning, carving in the round, scroll saw work or what have you, is different and unique in its own way but do you have a favorite piece you have done or a favorite type of piece you have done and if so, what is it? Thanks for your videos I'm a relatively new subscriber but I'm trying to catch up on all your videos thus far and am really enjoying it. Take care and keep up the good work.
Hi Scott Thanks for watching and the question. As you said hard to answer as I have a few but this vase falls amongst the top of my favorite because of the wood and the challenges it posed and the delicacy of the wood.ua-cam.com/video/bLIboarLDL8/v-deo.html
Good looking bowl Al. I love the grain figure. I was heading to the store the other day, management was with me, and I spotted a n interesting chunk of wood in a pile of hurricane debris, along side of the road. I pulled over, of course management started to tell me how nuts I was, and started to rummage through the pile when a big rattlesnake popped out and letting me know I was disturbing him. Management was freaking out because, I was bound and determined to get that wood, which I did. As I backed away, I thought to myself, what is going to happen when the FEMA guys show up to get the debris. Who says getting trash isn't dangerous
Thanks for watching and sharing such an amazing story as far as management thinking we're crazy .... Well that is without say and I have not even encountered a snake in my stash never mind a rattle snake... Yeah who says danger is not all around whatever we do? LOL. Take care
I love youre videos al ive been watching you for ages now inspiring stuff pal ,ive bought a shed some old tools and I'm looking for a lathe what would you suggest in the second hand maket as a good beginers lathe.
Thank you and glad to hear you're ready to take the plunge. Well I know there are many features to consider, the old style Delta, Dunlap, Atlas are great lathes but I must say that jumping pulleys get old fast unless you do upgrades. I would not hesitate to get a Reeves drive with swivel head such as a Delta, Jet, Grizzly 12 to 16" but than again I wouldn't be ashamed if it was a brand new HF 12" lathe either and at under 300.oo bucks you can't go wrong.Craigslist is my friend. I search it for tools and of course all the free wood you'll ever need.Good luck let me know what you ended up with. Take care
Hey Al, another great piece. I see you've been into using fire on a few of your bowls here lately. Have you ever heard of Shou Sugi Ban? It's basically burning the wood till it chars and then cleaning off the top layer and washing. I'm not sure how it would turn out on a turned piece, but maybe something to look into.
John Herman II, I've seen it on building timber, guitars, and outdoor furniture, but I've not seen it on a project such as this. That's part of the reason I brought it up.
Al I cant remember how many times I had my camera paused too and thought I was recording. Thank You for the tips and I like the "burn" effect with the video.
Opa's Workshop Equal parts,(1\3) Denatured Alchohol, Shellac, and Tung oil. Though he also uses Boiled Linseed Oil in substitute for the Tung oil. Food safe and dries quickly. I learned it from him too.
Watched with great interest, however I could not hear what the species of wood was......."Golden something".....anyway if you could let me know I would appreciate it. I love the design of this turning, melting pot is a good description. Thanks for your expertise and entertaining commentary.
Could you do a video with recipes for your OB Shine Juice and other brands of shellac, CA Glue, mixes of linseed oil, turpentine and any other finishes you use? I'm sure a lot of your subs would appreciate the info! thumbs up!!! Clark and Virginia
Thank you for the request Virginia but I have done a few and have commented on the formula in many of my videos. It's so simple it does not need a video on it. It's 1/3 Shellac 1/3 Boiled Linseed oil and 1/3 Denatured alcohol., Brands I am not sure what is available in your area and I am not much on a brand versus another. 99% of my finishes are the OB shine juice the formula given above.
@@AlFurtado Thanks for the recipe! i am currently going through all of your videos, but it takes time. Eventually I will come across all of the info you have recorded. Thanks for all of your effort to make and present your wonderful art!!! Clark and Virginia
