I was at their show at the Tokyo Dome tonight. Flawless show. They closed the show with Give It Away and lit up the house. The best parts of the show for me were Flea's goofy monologues and he and John facing off before the songs. John has a sweetess and purity to his playing that makes him stand out. So bluesy.
I love this part in the funky monks documentary. You see Rick Rubin getting Flea to strip back the bassline and hold back on fills to refine it to what it is on the final recording. You can see how he works as a producer and the difference it makes.
I feel like Rick is something like an inside representative for all the music fans out there. The listeners. Rather than considering what to play, like a musician would, he seemed to look at what a song should do, the feeling and the effect. Fun fact: Herschel Krustofski didn't like the "put it in you"-part and suggested "hug and kiss you". Kiedis preferred the clean verse, but it was too late to record
I love the Blood Sugar Album..it's a superb bass players album with a wide palette of representation. "I Could have lied" being my favourite ,Sir Psycho next..packed with terrific songs.
I think frusciante explained it best in an interview or something, where he said that keidis needs like a loop or a riff to sing along to and his playing is meant to compliment the vocals mostly, that's how the band operated, and he also said something about how the theatrics up and down the fretboard don't mean shit if the song sounds awful, maybe that's why his playing on the records sounds simplistic and thats what Justin is refering to as expressionless ? Idk honestly I loved frusciante cause he's like a ringo starr, if you don't know who he is and you happen to listen to his song, at first glance you think ah well that's easy, and then you try to replicate it and you just can't quite get it right. That to me is a very unique talent, and his solo work is also really nice and mellow. One of the greatest to ever do it ? I don't know but it doesnt matter as long as it sounds as good as it does
I find it so difficult to hear what's going on in a lot of songs but when the phrases and riffs are stripped backed to the acoustic it really is a revelation, so helpful in understanding what's going on. Cheers Justin :)
I’ve always heard of you write a song and it can be stripped down and played on acoustic guitar it’s a good song if not it’s no good. Many even heavy music musicians write on acoustic guitars. If you enjoy stuff like that you should check out Chris Cornell’s solo acoustic performances he does an incredible version of Nothing Compares 2U better than Sinead’s hit version to me.
@@brandonjackson5865 Always liked the stripped back versions of songs, I'll definitely check out the Chris Cornell version of Prince, his voice was outstanding. Cheers Brandon
@@barabadabada yeah he actually does some pretty phenomenal mashups too , like Metallica’s One and U2’s one. He was an incredible artist and more of a guitarist than he let on like. He might have had the absolute best Rock voice ever in my opinion, it’s rare to have a Chris Cornell and a Scott Weiland in the same generation but those were two of my favorite vocalist. It’s a tragedy they could no longer bare to battle their demons anymore. Seems like the most gifted are always the most tortured too .
Justin-I would love to see you go way way back in time and analyze Layne Staley's Live at the Moore, particularly his version of "Bleed the Freak". His voice is absolutely beautifully brilliant.
I’ve seen them 8 times, from 2000-2022. From huge stadiums to smaller outdoor venues. I became a fan after I saw them live. Watching Frusciante play…amazing.
I saw them twice. Once with Navaro on the One Hot Minute tour in London (i believe they only did one gig in England) and at a festival when Californication was out with Frusciante.
The Wet Sand solo was exactly what I had in mind whilst reading your comment, I think the end solo on Scar Tissue sums him up perfectly too. Simple but memorable, he never tries to be too flashy on the recording as he knows they're a collective but seeing them live is when he really shines and you see a master doing his thing
Wow I was not expecting insight on objectivism vs. altruism on this video. Very interesting to see you have a nuanced take on that subject. I think about that stuff often but haven't read much philosophy on it. Who knew I would get some insight on philosophical terminology on a RHCP reaction video.
Justin I love you man. One of the best. But I'd be genuinely shocked if you watched "Live at Slane Castle" and thought John wasn't an expressive guitar player. There's gotta be some sorta missing information here.
Really enjoyed this Justin. Love when you break down the song and teach us some of the things we might not know. I’m always impressed by your music knowledge!
As a longtime RHCP fan I really appreciate this video. Your comments are always so professional and reasonable. There are so many who have been so harsh with their comments about the band. Have a wonderful weekend, Justin.
I'm a, as you put it, RHCP enthusiast. but I can totally see why people wouldn't enjoy them. So I appreciate you doing this! If you're looking into doing more RHCP, please listen to The Heavy Wing. You'll dig the solo and vocals.
(excuse my poor english please :) A funny thing happened to me: I was already a Darkness fan before hearing any song! That's because I discovered your UA-cam channel not long ago and I really really like it. Very interesting content, you are a very funny and clever guy. Afterwards I´ve been listening the band and it is full of amazing stuff: some early ACDC great riffs, your voice reminds me to The Shins singer James Mercer (which I love) plus some gorgeous falsettos, the power of the Supersuckers in your live performances, and the glorious 70's glam style. My mind just blown away!! Please keep going with the music and the channel. Cheers!!
Nina Hagen's first album was a masterpiece and 2nd one was pretty good too. Tight band full of great musicians who went on to do loads after they parted with her-mostly because she is borderline insane. Sadly I never saw this band but the ones that came just after as they never toured in North America.
5:06 I’ve often wondered how they did this little phrase, full of mind-bending space-rock java as it is. Thank you Justin 🤘 Btw, I believe you meant strings 1 and 2 🤪.
I'm not the biggest RHCP fan but their sound is unique and largely very good. Because they've been kicking around so long they just blend into the furniture. I can guarantee however that when one of them sadly passes and RHCP becomes no more, Spotify will crash due to the overwhelming amount of people jumping back on the RHCP bandwagon! They won't know what they've had till its gone!
@@BC08 Well, "shredding" is probably overexaggerated but they've thrown in solos in 50+ percent of the songs on Dream Canteen to keep the John fanboys happy.
@@BC08 yeah there’s some stuff on Mother’s Milk. There’s also some live tapes, a gig called Off The Map. Frusciante could play every Hendrix song by the time he was 15. He is literally a guitar god. He writes riffs that serve the music, rather than trying to be flashy or technical. Goes for emotion rather than whatever, shredding.
Well, I'm genuinely impressed with Justin's grasp of philosophical concepts. I was not expecting that. Now I find myself investigating the differences between isms.
Love your take on the philosophy background. Great insight and awareness. Also, overall awesome channel Justin! Really enjoying what you're doing on here
Thank you for pointing out the Nina Hagen - Anthony Kiedis connection. I did not know about this. Nina is indeed german. To be precise, she grew up in former East Germany, where she had her first hit "Du hast den Farbfilm vergessen, mein Michael" (Michael, you forgot to bring the color film). This was not punk at all, rather a kind of novelty song. Basically it is about her beeing annoyed that her vacation is perfect with sunny days in a beautiful landscape and she can't take pictures because her partner left the color films at home. Obviously there was no digital photography back then, and if you ran out of film or failed to bring it with you in the first place, you couldn't take pictures. Those were the times when you thought twice if a certain shot was worth on of the 36 pictures you had on one of your limited number of cartridges (maximum). Feels like ages ago, and yet just 25 - 30 years have passed.
My favorite song by the Chili Peppers is Adventures of Raindance Maggie. They got a real 60s flower power flavor to em, seem like they really got a lot from that period. Legendary band!
One of those albums I can listen front to back.... amazing , that and one hot minute, so what if chilli peppers is not for everyone, if millions love it you can't say it sucks just cause it doesn't work for you...and the guitar work on both those albums are amazing, so much groove that technical kings will never achieve
Took my family and their spouses to a RHCP concert. Cost a pretty penny and was worth every dollar. Seeing Flea in person loving life was contagious! Their double entendres are fun and fabulous but unfortunately go over the heads of many. I love their enlightened lyrics and the message they put out.
Justin, that little riff you do at the end reminds me a little of Funky Monks - track off of the same album as give it away. Frusciante getting funky on an acoustic. You might enjoy it! 😊
I notice how classic rock bangers don’t always enjoy bands like the red hot chili peppers… Me, particularly, I love it!! It’s pretty different how the bass is the protagonist and the guitar is often thin, easy/simple ask. Very respect for all kinds of rock, but this is my shit!! Love u Justin!
Long time Chili Pepper fan here. To me, very few guitar players convey emotion like Frusciante. And to those who don’t like the new stuff, check out the Heavy Wing. Saw them on tour this past year and it was one of the best shows I’ve ever seen.
I agree. As a guitar player for 15 years and long time rhcp fan I genuinely think JF is one of the most expressive guitarists out there. Not just as RHCP guitarist but also his solo work. Shadows collide with people is one of my all time favourite albums However I have not really liked their stuff after stadium arcadium. I saw them last year which was dope, but didn't dig the new songs.
@@johnnyrivers8110 impossible mate.... Frusciante and rhcp are from a musical Theory point of view and songwriting structure utter geniuses. No one really compares except possibly the Police and certainly songs of Metallica
Totally unrelated to today’s video Justin... Bbbbbuuut OMG I’ve just discovered Why Don’t The Beautiful Cry?... What a work of pure genius art this is.. I mean I just can’t enough of it... I love your voice even more on this one..
I always find it sad that all the love is given to Frusciante and Dave Navarro gets none. Granted, i think Frusciante's style fits the RHCP better, but as far as technique goes Navarro is streets ahead. And One Hot Minute is an awesome album. Listen to it without thinking that it comes between Frusciante albums, just as its own work of art.
Maybe that is what grates the OHM era over JF's time. Navarro has amazing technique but it's not often I can hear soul / feel / making me feel emotion in the way JF can. Obviously my personal opinion but I do feel that OHM era lacked the warmth that JF brings to licks / solos / general playing.
Nice one! Always struggled with that riff but you broke it down so easily! I owe u one! Check out some of John’s solo work maybe? Really enjoy empyrean and shadows collide! A bucket head video would be awesome too! His pikes are amazing! Hold me forever and claymation courtyard a couple of my favorites!
Isn't objectivism that pseudo-philosophy invented by the notable undead lich queen Ayn Rand? I think you may have mixed up terms a little, it would be out of character for Ayn Rand to give anyone a jacket, unless it was because it was cursed or smelled like halitosis. Objectivism is much closer to the "I take what I want" mindset Kiedis had before being given that jacket.
Great video as always Justin. I am a big RHCP fan (tattoo and all) and I love all their music, but I totally understand people who don't. RHCP is hard to define, is it rock? is it punk? is it pop? is it funk? Actually they are a bit of everything and they have gone through many phases, which is normal for a band with 40+ years of existence. Anthony Kiedis is not a great singer, however, he is perfect for the band. He's great a what he does and how he does it. Flea and Chad are some of the best at their instruments and very well respected and John Frusciante, particularly for me is my favorite artist. He adds so much to the band, and when you see him live you can see how involved and passional he is when he plays. The four of them are great at what they do. It's true that Californication was their peak and everything after has been gradually losing power, with the exception of the last album that I think is amazing, but again they are a 40+ years band, it's surprising that they are still hungry for more. Also, I went to see them last year, first time I saw them with John and it's one of the best concerts I have ever been. They played like they were in their 20s. and they are all over 55!
No wonder they're always topless. They keep giving their shirts away. 😆 I kind of inherited a love of RHCP from my uncle. They were his favourite band before he passed. I got to see them a while back, their performance of Under the Bridge was so emotional for me. I know they're not for everyone but I still love their music, even their new stuff.
You can tell from my nickname maybe that I am a huge RHCP fan and I love this song! Didn't know the story behind it! I try to give away stuff that I like sometimes - I find it tough but it's exciting to see that I can do it and I don't miss that much what I thought I would miss tremendously. I guess this song is also permeated by the sexual allusions which are always there in their songs :D I think it's one of my faves together with scar tissue. I saw them live last year in London and will go again this year.
“I’m forever near a stereo saying, ‘What the fuck is this garbage? ‘ And the answer is always the Red Hot Chili Peppers.” - Nick Cave I'm with Mr Cave on this.
I never really listened to The Darkness but I really enjoy your UA-cam channel. Thoughtful analysis and insight. I was wondering if you ever thought of doing videos on artists from other genres such as hip-hop?
BTW, that guitar riff over the verse is actually "Sweet Leaf" from Black Sabbath, which he plays with full distortion near the end. He's definitely paying tribute here.
I didn’t get upset when you said you’re not into RHCP. The beauty in music is that some people love what others loathe. I’m sure plenty of folks out there are not into The Darkness and that you’re probably okay with that. I would like to suggest something. People always say that John Frusciante and his band mates are best experienced live. I’ve never heard them live, but I have seen recordings of them playing live - and it just seems very different. Perhaps you should compare their live performances with the recordings? Maybe you’ll hear more of the color you’re looking for that you’re not hearing in the produced versions? Or maybe you won’t . . . but it’s a way to give their music another try! Cheers!
I’ve seen them live. It was pretty good. Some recordings can capture a band live fairly well, but I’ve been to live shows that you just can’t recreate watching on a recording. It depends on the venue, acoustics and how close you are to the front (good luck at a Chili Peppers gig getting anywhere close to the front). It’s really hard to appreciate. I’m sure Justin knows from playing live and being at shows through his career. The one thing I’ve noticed in particular is that certain songs just make more sense when you see them live, that listening to the released album don’t make sense or leave you feeling flat, but blow you away live. That’s the best bit, discovering how the artist intended you to experience the song.
Came here (as always) for the theme song and fanciful banter and articulations but was floored (in a great way) when you, Justin, started talking philosophy and objectivism v. altruism no less!!! Well played my man! Who is John Gault? 😉
Definitely the week link in the band and the reason I have never been able to fully appreciate them. That corny white boy rap thing - meh - and then when he does try to sing, the vocals just always fall short. Shame because I think Flea and John definitely deserve the credit, but with those vocals over the top... no, not for me. Imagine if HR from Bad Brains had been the vocalist.
Justin, massive fan of RHCP & The Darkness. Throw your headphones on, sit back and listen to the double album Stadium Arcadium in full. JF’s best work IMO and most expressive.
@@kneeboarderndevon not really. children are able to mimic things rather well. Had you wrote the song at twelve that would be saying alot. By age 14 I could play every Metallica and Megadeth song out there because I was obsessed with the guitar and those were the artists I was into. Its a big leap between playing a cover and creating an original and in terms of being original Hendrix is among the most original artists to impact modern music even until today
I remember my brother doing solarization in his home darkroom in the 70s. Seem to recall it involving him turning the lights on briefly during the printing process.
John Frusciante is one of my favourite guitarists. I put him up there with Page and Hendrix, even though there’s a large generational divide between them.
I agree with the sentiment but these 3 legends are incomparable to one another. John is definitely one of the most influential guitarists of all time though.
John could mimic hendrix at age 9. Just because he's not on stage playing like hendrix every night doesn't mean he's not as talented. He's moved on and developed his own style which to me, you can hear hendrix influence in, especially early on. To each his own, but he's one of my fav guitar players. If you listen to him talk about his wealth of knowledge of different guitar players styles, he could copy anyone he wanted. Hendrix isn't lauded for copying others. It was his own style. Same with john
The problem with RHCP is Kiedis (at best, his lyrics are clunky, at worst, downright sexist and toxic), but they couldn’t exist without him. And I say that considering them having been consistently one of my favourite bands for over thirty years.
@SkyHammer99 I would say the difference is that AC/DC lyrics tend to be tongue in cheek (The Jack, Big Balls, etc.) whereas Kiedis just comes across as a predatory scumbag. Admittedly, there’s a lot of dodgy behaviour in Classic Rock bands of the 70s & 80s, just look up Bowie, Jimmy Page and Lori Maddix…
@@paulharrisonadventuregearm5457 “Exceptionally great” is a stretch… He comes up with words and sounds that fit the songs. That’s literally it. It’d be nice if he proved himself to be more than just a selfish narcissist, but I’m not holding my breath.
Honestly Justin, Frucsiante is a guitar giant… his wah solo on “she’s only 18” proves it imo. But also his playing across BSSM is exceptional. Above all though, his decision to dedicate his life to playing the instrument well and then *deliberately choose not to* makes him my favourite guitarist/artist - on a par with Hendrix. Also frusciante’s solo album The Empryean is unbelievable… yes I’m a fan
Frucsiante USED to be a guitar giant. He's gotten lazy, boring and predictable now. I can't stand him. Flea is the one that holds it down musically these days. Which is fine. It's ok for the bass player to be the heart of the music. But John either can't or doesn't want to do anything cool or exceptional anymore.

If You Have To Ask
I don't know but it doesnt matter as long as it sounds as good as it does
Love the video today Justin 😍 Most of RHCPs best songs are not the ones that were released as singles or the most popular in my opinion.

Even though you're constantly giving one of my favourite bands s**t, I really dig the elaborate thinking behind this analysis. Well done, Justin!
John is a great chord player. Very inventive. He just has so many diverse influences.
I'm a hardcore fan, and if you like Give it Away you can dig into the masterpiece that Blood Sugar Sex Magik is. It has an amazing funky groove.
John has some great solos that are pretty simple but sound beautiful, the one at the end of the song Wet Sand comes to mind.
An album so good, they even killed it with the B-Sides. Soul To Squeeze is an excellent song too.
Truly an underrated song

John Frusciante's outro on "Sir Psycho Sexy" is beautiful.

Just watched the performance of you and Sam, Heading into the New Year... My dude... You still got it.
Nina Hagen's first album was a masterpiece and 2nd one was pretty good too.
Love how you added the A blues lick to your theme song on the outro.
I really love John Frusciante, he can shred, but in RHCP they do what they feel the song needs.
Their lukewarm songs since Californication need lukewarm riffs…
You mean mostly mediocre songs where John occasionally kind of shreds, like large parts their recent album?
Any examples of John Frusciante “shredding”?
@@BC08 Well, "shredding" is probably overexaggerated but they've thrown in solos in 50+ percent of the songs on Dream Canteen to keep the John fanboys happy.
@@BC08 yeah there’s some stuff on Mother’s Milk. There’s also some live tapes, a gig called Off The Map.
Frusciante could play every Hendrix song by the time he was 15. He is literally a guitar god.
He writes riffs that serve the music, rather than trying to be flashy or technical. Goes for emotion rather than whatever, shredding.

Wait, did you really say Frusciante doesn't have expression in his guitar playing? Have you started using again?
The "Black Sabbath riff" is the part I always wait for when I hear this song on the radio or wherever, it clearly implies the song is finishing. 🤘

I thought John was trying to copy him in his earliest albums, then the more he drifted away the worse he got 😅

Even if the jacket smelled Ayn Rand would have expected that person to put in a self-respecting hard day's work before she handed it over to them.
I kind of inherited a love of RHCP from my uncle. They were his favourite band before he passed. I got to see them a while back, their performance of Under the Bridge was so emotional for me.
I know they're not for everyone but I still love their music, even their new stuff.

I used to like them, saw them live and it was terrible. So boring and lifeless.
The honesty is appreciated. No one wants to watch a reactor throw roses at artists just to keep the paying customers and fans of said artist happy.
