- There has been backlash to Sam Smith's new song and music video "I'm Not Here To Make Friends". I don't usually react to pop or "mainstream" music very often, but since it's causing a bit of a stir I thought I'd see what all the fuss is about.

You seem to care a lot about pronouns and what other people liked to be called. Also, "they" has been used as singular form since 1375. It's not a new thing. You can call someone whatever you like, or you can call them what they'd like to be called. It's totally up to you.
Music videos have contained “cross dressing”, partial nudity and provocative dancing for as long as there have been music videos. If people are offended by the sexual nature of dancers gyrations and burlesque style outfits then maybe they could simply choose not to watch the videos! 🤯

Im ashamed to say i only just popped my The Darkness cherry last night Glasgow at the rip age of 49. Verdict, tremendous. Musicianship, tunes, energy, humour, pyros, fabulous clothing, headstand and shoulder riding guitar play. Bravo !

At my work there are 2" wide red and black striped, rubber water hoses cooling much of the machinery. They remind me of trousers I once saw you wear on stage. Every time I see those hoses, I think of you, Justin.
I suppose when a song’s that dull and unimaginative you have to do something to get it attention. Madonna did it better with ‘Erotica’, but this hardly earns the label of controversial, contrived would be more accurate.

Glasgow OVO is absolutely my favourite place I've ever seen anyone play. The building is completely seamless, huge doors, no waiting to get your ticket scanned and you go from being outside to being in front of the stage in about 30seconds. Toilets everywhere, space for multiple merch stands so you're not in a queue there either.
This video echoes "Its a Hard Life" by Queen, the artistic team and Sam have taken huge influence. The costumes, the eccentricity. Nobody does it better than Freddie, the original Queen

Totally agree with your statement that part of an artists job is to be polarizing. Some of the most prized and renowned art ever made is/was polarizing. If it's not there to make a statement and make people feel something, anything at all, to stop and take a moment to think and feel, then what's the point? What purpose does it serve? Literally all music is polarizing, there's songs my wife adores that I absolutely cannot stand and vice versa. That's the beauty of art.

Some of the most polarising art is made to showcase the absurdity of the status quo or to offer an alternative. This music video is nothing like that, it doesn't polarize because it makes an uncomfortable statement about the world, it's just uncomfortable. It just goes along with the debauchery and hyper-sexualization of society, it doesn't make a statement about anything other than this is even more gross to look at than other music videos

My hubby took me to see the Darkness, a few years back and, tbh I was not really excited by the prospect after my last gig with him to see Motörhead left me , should I say, a little disgruntled with him ( sorry, to each their own and all that).

I don't think Sam Smith would contest this fact. Gender is something that is socially constructed. I think non binary relates to gender meaning masculine and feminine, so therefore non-binary means not one or the other but both. It's therefore possible for a non binary person to be attracted to members of the same sex. That's how I would understand it anyway.

I remember when Culture Club's Do You Really Want to Hurt Me came out. Of course there was some shock, but everybody loved the song, and Boy George was so likeable, and he didn't pretend to lecture anybody on anything nor was classless.
Frankie Goes to Hollywood's Relax was just pushing the limits, but again, the song was awesome and the talent was right there.

Banning is obviously completely inappropriate for a modern, liberal democracy in the 21st C, but then making a music video that glamorizes golden shower fantasies isn't really that great either. I came out fifteen years ago, and to be blunt, I am so embarrassed what the community has become. It used to be "we just want to be ourselves, and we just want to be able to marry whichever consenting adult we want'. But it has become a fucking CIRCUS. Don't get me wrong, I have been to tons of drag shows, I was hella active in the community in college. But it has just become so....performative. A fad, a trend. It's ridiculous.

I honestly think it's much ado about nothing because it's nothing NEW. I grew up being a huge fan of Elton John. My dad owned all of Elton's albums and i used to "steal" them and listen to them frontwards to backwards. We must remember how incredibly flamboyant he was back in the day. He's become a bit more less so in his older years, but in the 70's and 80's he was performing wearing feather boas, sequined suits, crazy eyewear and all sorts of outlandish costumes. I don't recall people throwing hissy fits over his choice of attire or performing style. Everyone thought it's simply Elton being Elton. Or what about Liberace? Same thing. He was known for his outlandish costumes and campiness. Or David Bowie.... the list goes on and on... So I honestly don't see where Sam Smith is doing anything different from many of the musicians/performers that came before him. But that's just my opinion.
Yeah, I don't think it's really anything new. Pop stars / rock stars are almost always flamboyant and provocative. It's part of the appeal to the youths! Or at least I think it is; it was when I was young anyway and I assume it's still the same😂

Even our lovely host, Justin (although straight), is known for his outlandish stage persona. He wears skin tight body suits and a bare torso and STRUTS across the stage. That's why he said in a recent video that he had been jogging in order to be able to fit into his bodysuits on stage. But, that's apart of his personal style. And, I must add, that nobody on here is mentioning how "out there" Justin is on stage.

What I don't understand about this track is the immense overproduction on the vocal. The individual has an incredible voice, why overlay to such an extent?

I understand that, but the way I see it its like someone who can play beautiful fingerstyle guitar but chooses to play the heaviest distorted death metal, its about what a person chooses to do creatively with the talent they have. Sam is great at stripped down heartfelt stuff but right now they wanna make fun dancy numbers and the overproduced vocals are part of that.

I'm torn with the gay thing; on one hand I have no problem at all with gay people, or them being gay in public, two men kissing is just a kiss, although a stubbly for my tastes. However I recently went to a Pride festival with my trans gender son... there were arses and penises out everywhere, I do have a huge issue with that. If I stand outside McDonalds with my bits out, I'm going to end up in a prison cell, this shouldn't change just because it's an organised event, especially when children are encouraged to attend. It is still held in a public area. I don't walk around my house naked because I have kids, they have their friends round, I don't want them seeing my bits and I'm pretty sure their parents don't either. I can see why some people think these events are attended by child groomers, the majority aren't but it's easy to see how predators and perverts can utilise these events to groom kids. Public decency is important and I do think that Smiths video is dangerously flirting with the line of public (in terms of broadcast without an age rating, post watershed this video wouldn't be an issue but if the uncensored video of Blurred Lines is unacceptable, this should be too) decency, especially considering how quickly political opinion can change.
