I recently discovered an animated superhero series called The Maxx. Despite it being from the early 90s, it somewhat deconstructs "safe horny." The main characters all have values that don't match their physiques. The Maxx looks like a hulking muscular brute, but his morals are pure and his goal is to save women from a serial rapist. Julie dresses provactively and is apathetic towards victims, but she's a social worker who still helps out where she can. And the villain doing these crimes is an unattractive wimpy bald guy with an inflated sense of intelligence and charisma. Each of these three have arcs that deal with the right and wrong ways to deal with sexual trauma. Either as a bystander, a victim, or a perpetrator. It's a nuanced show that would absolutely break the mind of someone obsessed with the strict dichotomy of safe vs unsafe horny.

The simple fact that the Fable devs chose a gender-neutral mystery meat character design to represent their game instead of something more bold [in any direction] shows a severe lack of faith in their ability to sell the product on merit. Not sure if this entirely relevant, but I think the situation going on with Skullgirls neatly ties into the whole safe sexy/edgy topic. The devs recently came out and said they were going to update the game in order to edit or remove some more sexually and topically insensitive cutscenes and animations from the game. Two of the major examples are editing scenes involving Filia, a character who is canonically 16 years old, to be less sexual, and the removal of the armbands from a military branch controlled by another playable character named Parasoul, which had direct visual parallels to Nazi armbands in WW2. Of course you have terminally online progs on Twitter celebrating these changes, claiming how greatful they are for removing “hate imagery” or “literal cp”. Keep in mind this game came out in 2012, over a decade ago, and not once during the game’s development did any of the devs, or most of the fans for that matter, have a problem with this content. I think the ultimate proof that it's just a power game and not actually related to anything sexual is that you find that more often than not, the examples of characters who they turn into their icons are done with a "Western" style of depiction - the Japanese characters who do get lifted onto pedestals are from franchises or companies who have a more Westernized style in their products. For example, when there's a character such as Uzaki who isn't even significantly sexualized (other than just existing as a shortstack and even then there's just as much showcasing of the male lead's body in the series) and who is an adult with a healthy relationship, she gets severe hatred from them simply because of the art style. I think part of it is trying to colonize the Japanese industries because of simply how lucrative the industries are and how they honestly have a bigger voice in pop culture. Yah, I've hungout with people who hate the "straight male gaze" and it's rough. Although transitioning is a common prescribed treatment for gender dysphoria, that is in large part due to politics. It is actually not a very effective treatment. The main reason gender dysphoria is a mental health issue worthy of treatment is that it often leads to suicide. The patient cannot accept the body they were born with, and so, destroys it. Gender dysphoria is essentially a type of delusion and cognitive dissonance. The internal reality doesnt match with external reality. Treatment of these kinds of mental health issues typically involves walking the patient through self acceptance, and reducing the gap between internal and external realities. For example... Anorexia is a body dysphoria. No matter how skinny an anorexic person becomes, they see someone fat in the mirror. It is treated by giving the patient the tools necessary to find self acceptance. Since the problem is mental, not physical, it cannot be treated by enabling the delusion that someone who is a literal skeleton needs to lose weight. For whatever reason... Gender dysphoria is the ONLY mental condition, where there is a disconnect between internal and external realities, where the standard treatment is to essentially feed that disconnect, and enable the patient's internal reality with not only transition surgery, but also the demand that society as a whole accept that persons internal reality. The reason it's not an effective treatment is because the suicide rates of transgenders hasnt really gone down post-op compared to pre-op. This naturally gets blamed on society being transphobic... But that's probably not what's going on here. If your standard for "transphobia" is so low, that a gas station worker not being sure what pronoun to use is considered transphobic, then the problem isnt society... The problem is a glaring insecurity that is still present in that person. Because thats what insecurity looks like, demanding all of society know your internal reality, and that they make it the external reality for you. The gender dysphoria doesnt really go away in that case. This is why transgenders love that word affirmation. The transition doesnt actually stick, so the transgender person still needs a continuous stream of external validation... If transgender surgeries actually worked at preventing suicide, then it wouldnt produce people who need constant validation. I am generalizing here of course. Im sure some transgenders are happier and more secure than ever post op. And there even is some science to suggest their internal reality isnt entirely wrong. Men and women in general, think different, and that difference shows up on brain scans. A lot of gender dysphoric people show up in brain scans as having the opposite gender's brain patterns... So men who think like women, or women who think like men. These kinds of people maybe would actually benefit from transitioning... The problem is, these kinds of people are far rarer than the number of people swept up in the LGBT movement. A lot of people getting transitions probably never were brain scanned like this, a lot are probably misdiagnosed or self diagnosed with gender dysphoria, and a lot are getting transitions that dont actually secure the person. For example, you saw that tik tok with the trans man who literally couldnt even grasp how and why men interact the way they do. If he really had gender dysphoria from a place of ACTUALLY being male brained as a woman, then a lot of this kind of stuff wouldnt need to be explained, and if anything, would come naturally. For people like that, transitioning isnt the answer... Because it usually causes permanent damage, making transitioning back very difficult if they ever realize that transitioning in the first place was a mistake. After all that, gender dysphoria lingers, and the chances of suicide remain high. I genuinely think a lot of people who have transitioned in recent years were actually just gay, generally stricken with anxiety, or just have effiminate or masculine behaviors as a man or woman respectively... These are not people who benefit from transitioning, at all. If it's rarely an effective treatment, why do doctors do it? Well, put simply, initially, they were following science... It just so happens that science was bad. The whole "gender is a social construct" concept is based on the scientific work of people like John Money, and his experiments on people like David Reimer. ... His work (and similar doctors like him at the time) became the backbone of transitioning as a treatment... It didnt become common knowledge that John Money was a freak until well after his ideas became standard treatment. Essentially, his data on his experiments on Reimer was pretty bogus, or at least heavily cherry picked. Reimer was essentially transitioned against his will (following a botched circumcision), gaslit from a young age that he was a girl... And the transition didnt take, because as it turns out, genetics and hormones are a lot stronger than social factors in the particular case of gender. When he found out what actually happened, he transitioned back to being a boy... Then committed suicide at the age of 38. ... Somehow... This f@cking moron's research became the basis for "gender is a construct", and using transitions to treat gender dysphoria. So that was the bad science that kicked all this off. Now the reason why doctors STILL do it is largely the result of political bias impacting research. For example, Christopher Dummitt was a researcher who wrote a lot on how gender is a social construct (a lot of it heavy handed written with a liberal bias. He literally equates men grilling to colonization of a female activity: cooking... Is it still sexism if he thinks BOTH genders are just actual dumb stereotypes?) After much self reflection and growing the f@ck up, he later recanted his research, and basically said he made most of it up, and that he realized he was heavily influenced by his politics. By then though, the damage was already done, and his lunatic scribblings had added to the backbone of "Scientific Support" for "gender is a social construct". Meanwhile, universities have actively supressed new research on the subject when it's actively objective, as it might invalidate most of the arguments most pro-trans rights activists make. Affirming a transgender's choices has now taken precedent over doing actual research that might ACTUALLY help reduce the spread of mental illness, and might ACTUALLY help bring down suicide rates among those with gender dysphoria. Theres been several studies that had the potential to tear down John Money's accepted research, but most inevitably get shut down. Research is funded by money, and money is almost inherently political. This kind of stuff is why morons who defend the trans movement with "it's scientifically backed" are brain dead morons. The male/female brain stuff is kind of interesting, but overall, transitions as treatments is based on bogus research by a crazy person, most modern "research" on the subject has heavy political biases, even admitted to by the few authors who wake the f@ck up later in life, and any research to the contrary gets swept under the rug. Most people who make the argument that transness is scientifically backed have never actually read the research, and the few that have, arent looking for any deeper historical or political context... It's literally just an authority fallacy argument. Anyway... Just thought I'd point all this out. I think you make a lot of good points, but some of the stuff is wrong. Firstly, the evidence of the male or female brain is scant at best. Brain studies even between the same sex vary hugely. It also doesn't help that the majority of these studies have confounding variables like sexual orientation or the effects of the estrogen on the male brain. More recent studies have tried to correct this have found that straight trans people (Transbians if you will), have more in common with their biological sex, even if they do have relations to the opposite sex than your average man. You also repeated the whole trans suicide debacle, which while it is true that trans people probably do have much higher suicide rates, some of the statistics are manipulated a little bit and weaponized by both sides to prove a point. Again, self surveys aren't always accurate, especially when put under the scrutiny of an organization called "The World Alliance for Transgender People."

I went through my 'consciously edgy' phase (i.e. edgy for the sake of being edgy) rather late. I was in my twenties and serving in the Marines, which culturally speaking is an 'edgy' culture, as it actively disregards conventional taboos (like racial jokes, strip clubs, tobacco use, foul language, and hyperbolically violent black humor), while simultaneously embracing traits traditional masculinity, male camaraderie, firm leadership, stoicism, individual responsibility, and pride in ones part in a larger whole both as a leader and subordinate; all traits which are largely decried by the modern cultural zeitgeist. Marines are therefore 'naturally' edgy, as the general USMC culture often has little in common with the wider civilian culture, often offending the sensibilities of both extremes. This culture eventually led me to the wonders of 4chan, where I received by digital education in the arts of online trolling and properly edgy hyperbole. Which, puerile and ultimately shallow as it all was (seriously, people give 4chan way more credit and serious consideration than it deserves), was a valuable education, and one I don't at all regret, cringe and all. Firstly because it got all that out of my system for the most part. I rarely make hyperbolic statements anymore because hyperbole has lost its value to me, and if I do make one, I generally state it as being such. Having intentionally manufactured hyperbole for the purpose of generating outrage, it's also easier to spot hyperbolic statements, and dismiss such statement for the exaggeration and sensationalism they actually are, even if the people making them don't actually believe it's hyperbole. Second, it taught me the difference between 'trolling' and just poor reasoning. A troll doesn't engage in poor reasoning, he engages in manipulative statements. Getting people upset is his goal, and the more people he can upset, the larger the victory. Julie dresses provactively and is apathetic towards victims, but she's a social worker who still helps out where she can.

Each of these three have arcs that deal with the right and wrong ways to deal with sexual trauma. Either as a bystander, a victim, or a perpetrator. It's a nuanced show that would absolutely break the mind of someone obsessed with the strict dichotomy of safe vs unsafe horny.

I used to be really into Phoenix Wright. They did the same thing to Miles Edgeworth and in fanon it's practically gospel to ship Edgeworth with Wright. Even though there's 0 evidence for either character being gay. Edgeworth hasn't expressed sexual interest in anyone, and the feelings Wright forced him to confront are likely guilt from his previous attitude as a prosecutor. Wright is someone whom he respects, so a moral quandary spurred on by his words will no doubt cause some uncomfortable feelings.

It's like progs don't understand that there's more kinds of love than just romantic. Most people love their family and friends, and that has nothing to do with romance or sexuality. That same understanding needs to be extended more to close platonic friends.
It's even weirder because they also try to shut down romantic interests between opposite sex characters and force any relationships there to be strictly platonic even though genuine platonic friendships between men and women with no sexual tension whatsoever are rare unless both parties are related, have been friends since childhood, or one or both are already in relationships where both sides know their partner and respect them enough not to go behind anyone's back.

The simple fact that the Fable devs chose a gender-neutral mystery meat character design to represent their game instead of something more bold [in any direction] shows a severe lack of faith in their ability to sell the product on merit. Not sure if this entirely relevant, but I think the situation going on with Skullgirls neatly ties into the whole safe sexy/edgy topic. The devs recently came out and said they were going to update the game in order to edit or remove some more sexually and topically insensitive cutscenes and animations from the game. Two of the major examples are editing scenes involving Filia, a character who is canonically 16 years old, to be less sexual, and the removal of the armbands from a military branch controlled by another playable character named Parasoul, which had direct visual parallels to Nazi armbands in WW2. Of course you have terminally online progs on Twitter celebrating these changes, claiming how greatful they are for removing “hate imagery” or “literal cp”. Keep in mind this game came out in 2012, over a decade ago, and not once during the game’s development did any of the devs, or most of the fans for that matter, have a problem with this content. Almost as if it was explicitly marketed on edgy, hyper-sexualized women beating the hell out of each other. I think the ultimate proof that it's just a power game and not actually related to anything sexual is that you find that more often than not, the examples of characters who they turn into their icons are done with a "Western" style of depiction - the Japanese characters who do get lifted onto pedestals are from franchises or companies who have a more Westernized style in their products. For example, when there's a character such as Uzaki who isn't even significantly sexualized (other than just existing as a shortstack and even then there's just as much showcasing of the male lead's body in the series) and who is an adult with a healthy relationship, she gets severe hatred from them simply because of the art style. I think part of it is trying to colonize the Japanese industries because of simply how lucrative the industries are and how they honestly have a bigger voice in pop culture.

Yah, I've hungout with people who hate the "straight male gaze" and it's rough. Because they're LGBTQ or w/e they can sexualize and objectify whoever they want whenever they want but if I show even a hint of sexuality or interest in someone I'm made to feel like I'm an animal. Although transitioning is a common prescribed treatment for gender dysphoria, that is in large part due to politics. It is actually not a very effective treatment.
The main reason gender dysphoria is a mental health issue worthy of treatment is that it often leads to suicide. The patient cannot accept the body they were born with, and so, destroys it.
Gender dysphoria is essentially a type of delusion and cognitive dissonance. The internal reality doesnt match with external reality.
Treatment of these kinds of mental health issues typically involves walking the patient through self acceptance, and reducing the gap between internal and external realities.
For example... Anorexia is a body dysphoria. No matter how skinny an anorexic person becomes, they see someone fat in the mirror. It is treated by giving the patient the tools necessary to find self acceptance. Since the problem is mental, not physical, it cannot be treated by enabling the delusion that someone who is a literal skeleton needs to lose weight.
For whatever reason... Gender dysphoria is the ONLY mental condition, where there is a disconnect between internal and external realities, where the standard treatment is to essentially feed that disconnect, and enable the patient's internal reality with not only transition surgery, but also the demand that society as a whole accept that persons internal reality.
The reason it's not an effective treatment is because the suicide rates of transgenders hasnt really gone down post-op compared to pre-op. This naturally gets blamed on society being transphobic... But that's probably not what's going on here. If your standard for "transphobia" is so low, that a gas station worker not being sure what pronoun to use is considered transphobic, then the problem isnt society... The problem is a glaring insecurity that is still present in that person. Because thats what insecurity looks like, demanding all of society know your internal reality, and that they make it the external reality for you. The gender dysphoria doesnt really go away in that case. This is why transgenders love that word affirmation. The transition doesnt actually stick, so the transgender person still needs a continuous stream of external validation... If transgender surgeries actually worked at preventing suicide, then it wouldnt produce people who need constant validation.
I am generalizing here of course. Im sure some transgenders are happier and more secure than ever post op. And there even is some science to suggest their internal reality isnt entirely wrong. Men and women in general, think different, and that difference shows up on brain scans. A lot of gender dysphoric people show up in brain scans as having the opposite gender's brain patterns... So men who think like women, or women who think like men. These kinds of people maybe would actually benefit from transitioning... The problem is, these kinds of people are far rarer than the number of people swept up in the LGBT movement. A lot of people getting transitions probably never were brain scanned like this, a lot are probably misdiagnosed or self diagnosed with gender dysphoria, and a lot are getting transitions that dont actually secure the person. For example, you saw that tik tok with the trans man who literally couldnt even grasp how and why men interact the way they do. If he really had gender dysphoria from a place of ACTUALLY being male brained as a woman, then a lot of this kind of stuff wouldnt need to be explained, and if anything, would come naturally. For people like that, transitioning isnt the answer... Because it usually causes permanent damage, making transitioning back very difficult if they ever realize that transitioning in the first place was a mistake. After all that, gender dysphoria lingers, and the chances of suicide remain high. I genuinely think a lot of people who have transitioned in recent years were actually just gay, generally stricken with anxiety, or just have effiminate or masculine behaviors as a man or woman respectively... These are not people who benefit from transitioning, at all.
If it's rarely an effective treatment, why do doctors do it? Well, put simply, initially, they were following science... It just so happens that science was bad. The whole "gender is a social construct" concept is based on the scientific work of people like John Money, and his experiments on people like David Reimer.
... His work (and similar doctors like him at the time) became the backbone of transitioning as a treatment... It didnt become common knowledge that John Money was a freak until well after his ideas became standard treatment. Essentially, his data on his experiments on Reimer was pretty bogus, or at least heavily cherry picked. Reimer was essentially transitioned against his will (following a botched circumcision), gaslit from a young age that he was a girl... And the transition didnt take, because as it turns out, genetics and hormones are a lot stronger than social factors in the particular case of gender. When he found out what actually happened, he transitioned back to being a boy... Then committed suicide at the age of 38.
... Somehow... This f@cking moron's research became the basis for "gender is a construct", and using transitions to treat gender dysphoria.
So that was the bad science that kicked all this off. Now the reason why doctors STILL do it is largely the result of political bias impacting research. For example, Christopher Dummitt was a researcher who wrote a lot on how gender is a social construct (a lot of it heavy handed written with a liberal bias. He literally equates men grilling to colonization of a female activity: cooking... Is it still sexism if he thinks BOTH genders are just actual dumb stereotypes?)
After much self reflection and growing the f@ck up, he later recanted his research, and basically said he made most of it up, and that he realized he was heavily influenced by his politics. By then though, the damage was already done, and his lunatic scribblings had added to the backbone of "Scientific Support" for "gender is a social construct".
Meanwhile, universities have actively supressed new research on the subject when it's actively objective, as it might invalidate most of the arguments most pro-trans rights activists make. Affirming a transgender's choices has now taken precedent over doing actual research that might ACTUALLY help reduce the spread of mental illness, and might ACTUALLY help bring down suicide rates among those with gender dysphoria. Theres been several studies that had the potential to tear down John Money's accepted research, but most inevitably get shut down. Research is funded by money, and money is almost inherently political.
This kind of stuff is why morons who defend the trans movement with "it's scientifically backed" are brain dead morons. The male/female brain stuff is kind of interesting, but overall, transitions as treatments is based on bogus research by a crazy person, most modern "research" on the subject has heavy political biases, even admitted to by the few authors who wake the f@ck up later in life, and any research to the contrary gets swept under the rug. Most people who make the argument that transness is scientifically backed have never actually read the research, and the few that have, arent looking for any deeper historical or political context... It's literally just an authority fallacy argument.
Anyway... Just thought I'd point all this out. Just because its the most common treatment, that doesnt mean that transition surgeries are actually an effective treatment... Theyre not really.
And btw for anyone who read this far... I dont actually have anything against trans people. I think they should have all the same rights as anyone else. And if you did transition, and are happy with that decision, then good for you and I wish you all the best... It's just that the entire premise behind the trans movement is demonstrably bullsh@t, transitions dont prevent suicides among those with gender dysphoria, and I (and many others in society) are really getting tired of being told it's somehow our job to make a clinically insecure person feel "affirmed" constantly to the point of actively being treated like sh@t if we dont.

I think you make a lot of good points, but some of the stuff is wrong. Firstly, the evidence of the male or female brain is scant at best. Brain studies even between the same sex vary hugely. It also doesn't help that the majority of these studies have confounding variables like sexual orientation or the effects of the estrogen on the male brain. More recent studies have tried to correct this have found that straight trans people (Transbians if you will), have more in common with their biological sex, even if they do have relations to the opposite sex than your average man. You also repeated the whole trans suicide debacle, which while it is true that trans people probably do have much higher suicide rates, some of the statistics are manipulated a little bit and weaponized by both sides to prove a point. Again, self surveys aren't always accurate, especially when put under the scrutiny of an organization called "The World Alliance for Transgender People."

I went through my 'consciously edgy' phase (i.e. edgy for the sake of being edgy) rather late. I was in my twenties and serving in the Marines, which culturally speaking is an 'edgy' culture, as it actively disregards conventional taboos (like racial jokes, strip clubs, tobacco use, foul language, and hyperbolically violent black humor), while simultaneously embracing traits traditional masculinity, male camaraderie, firm leadership, stoicism, individual responsibility, and pride in ones part in a larger whole both as a leader and subordinate; all traits which are largely decried by the modern cultural zeitgeist.
Marines are therefore 'naturally' edgy, as the general USMC culture often has little in common with the wider civilian culture, often offending the sensibilities of both extremes. This culture eventually led me to the wonders of 4chan, where I received by digital education in the arts of online trolling and properly edgy hyperbole. Which, puerile and ultimately shallow as it all was (seriously, people give 4chan way more credit and serious consideration than it deserves), was a valuable education, and one I don't at all regret, cringe and all.
Firstly because it got all that out of my system for the most part. I rarely make hyperbolic statements anymore because hyperbole has lost its value to me, and if I do make one, I generally state it as being such. Having intentionally manufactured hyperbole for the purpose of generating outrage, it's also easier to spot hyperbolic statements, and dismiss such statement for the exaggeration and sensationalism they actually are, even if the people making them don't actually believe it's hyperbole.
Second, it taught me the difference between 'trolling' and just poor reasoning. A troll doesn't engage in poor reasoning, he engages in manipulative statements. A troll is actively seeking a response, usually a negative one, and will choose the most inflammatory and 'edgy' wording he can to bait out that response, usually not even believing or even agreeing with the statements he's making. Getting people upset is his goal, and the more people he can upset, the larger the victory. A troll is not arguing to a point, or reacting out of anger or hate, but rather intentionally exploiting a chance to lead people by the nose into outrage for its own sake. (Which is why the warped definition of troll as a synonym for 'hater' is a little irksome, because they really aren't synonymous concepts, but that's a different issue)
Nowadays, I'd be considered 'edgy' due to my genuinely conservative views on most topics, both economically and societally. I'm no longer 'edgy for the sake of being edgy' like I was in my early 20s, but 'edgy' by virtue of genuinely rejecting most of the current cultural zeitgeist, i.e. the Marxism that is so dominant in the Leftist-run corporate, political, and social media spheres. Consequently, I actually wish I wasn't considered edgy, because that would mean a more rational and less Marxist-infected norm has taken root, but for now, I'll wear that 'edgy' badge with a modicum of pride, because someone needs to stick it to the new bourgeois and corporate authoritarian socialist establishment, and that might as well include me.
