Man, I tried so hard to like Hell Let Loose and the game does do some stuff right, like it's sound design, but I agree that it's just no fun having to run a marathon for every respawn just to get my wig scalped by the player that I thought was a washed-out tree stump 150m out. Might give this game a looksie, I've been missing old-old WW2 CoD games hard over the last couple years.
I have the same feelings as you OP. I want to like Hell Let Loose, but it feels inaccessible. I know in real life, battlefields spanned massive amounts of terrain, but they also had a proportional amount of manpower and coordinated tactics and movement. HLL doesn't have the ability to simulate that in the casual community, and like many other large scale games it falls into the problem of making you do a lot of running all over only to die from unseen shooters. I do better, with no training, in real life playing paintball or airsoft at a local field with friends than I do in games like this. I think some of this has to do with the game not properly penalizing getting shot(no game can), but if that's the case you have to build your systems around it, particularly getting the player back into the action. Fun is not running across a map for minutes only to die again and sit in the spawn for another 60 seconds (that feels like an eternity). Games from RO2 to Day of Defeat etc. understood this and didn't wait long for you to get a chance to try again.
You have to get past the clunk factor of DH, it feels clunky and a tad dated, but every other aspect i think surpasses HLL or Squad 44. Engagements are concentrated, tacticle and rewarding, huge variety of gameplay styles to choose from as well as a ton of maps, i think over 50 at this point.

Darkest Hour was one of the few games pre-discord I joined an Org and was part of their companies, went through training, etc. Long before I was in the army. I was enthralled. I listened to orders, etc. Such good times..
To add to cons of Hell Let Loose, it’s a grind fest to unlock new gear, developers are making DLC skins only for specific maps, allies have a 80% win rate so picking Germany will often end in a steamroll defeat and the shooting is terrible.
Although I agree that HLL isn't the best game, the con of "not being able to tell if something is an enemy or not" is quite literally the purpose of those uniforms
Shame they never finished the bots… they work pretty well most of the time but they get stuck on terrain and tank your frame rate trying to figure out why they aren’t moving.

You missed out by not playing Red Orchestra. Crazy fun game, and the realistic tank shells made for some hilarious ricochets on angled armor. I had a round-end shot bounce 90 degrees into the air off an enemy tank turret, which came back down and killed them after the end.
There's more servers than just that. I've never felt that needing to play in one server ever deterred from me playing. The 64 player server is full everyday at peak hours.
One of my favorite things about this game is watching the soldiers expressions as they ride in the vehicles, some are cheery and excited, others...not so much, vomitting, losing control of bowels etc. when i saw this, i knew that this was the game for me.
To be fair, it's kind of realistic that many buildings are "unenterable" in Hell Let Loose because, realistically, either there are civilians barricaded in them or debris is blocking the doors. But yeah, it's pretty sad to see what Team17 is doing with the game. But really, how can it be that hard to make a proper, realistic WWII shooter? For example, take the soldiers' equipment from Hell Let Loose, the weapon details from Helldivers 2, the vehicle details from War Thunder, and the destructible assets from Battlefield 5 (also i kinda like how trees are destructed in Star Wars Battlefront 1). Planes could come from War Thunder and Battlefield (I like being in a player-crewed vehicle). Proper voice acting should be similar (but more realistic) to Battlefield, Helldivers, and Red Dead Redemption. Character movement could be mixed from Ready or Not and Helldivers 2 (I like the leans from RoN and the dive from Hd2). I hate to say it, but to make it historically accurate, there can't be female soldiers. There should be limb-based damage, but with various sorts of being hit: the possibility to not notice if you got shot (checkable by patting down or having another player notice and tell you). If not noticed, after the adrenaline wears off, you go to one of the next stages depending on the hit: heavily wounded but still standing, unable to hold a two-handed weapon and slowed; downed but able to shoot with a one-handed weapon and drag your body with the other arm; downed but still able to drag yourself along the floor; downed and unable to crawl to safety with visible agony (like the previous two, so enemies and friends see that you're alive); knocked out; or dead. Additionally, you can break bones (for example by a bone hit), giving you an adrenaline push and weird controls, but if the adrenaline ends, you die. I mean, all this already exists in different games; you only have to put it together. Of course, it will take a lot of resources, but Rockstar is also able to make similar games, just not WWII-focused. If the main triple-A companies weren't so greedy and incredibly lazy, this would already be a thing. Feel free to add to the list or correct me if you think you have a better idea. I don't have much knowledge of other popular games.
The main issue with all of these things is 1. It takes effort, time, and patience (in short supply) 2. It takes money and resources (in shorter supply) 3. Combining all of these things will appeal to only a very niche audience (in the shortest supply) and 4. Oversaturation with the five hundred tac shooters and BF Clones that have released in recent history.
1:21 Not a worthy complaint, The MkIII was used at the start of the war by all of the Empire's Forces. Even in 1943, troops in Europe, Asia and The Pacific were using said gun.
I'd argue Easy Red 2 is the best bang for your buck WW2 shooter. For 10 dollars, you get a TON of content from an indie developer who put a ton or work into improving the game. Each DLC also has a ton of content for just 6 USD. It's truly a throwback to old WW2 shooters like Call of Duty, Medal of Honor, and Battlefield 1942. The only caveat is that you'll playing PvE and coop with friends, as I'm convinced 95% of the game's community is fatigued from PvP games so the server browser for multiplayer is often dead. For once, I'm playing a milsim game that isn't super clunky on my Xbox controller.

I LOVE urban maps that allow many different tanks to be used. I don’t know why, it if you are in the streets, you will dbe killed by a tank, but if you get to a 3rd story floor with a big bomb, you can kill that tank. It makes it so you have to GIT GUD and BE SMORT when playing and countering tanks and I love it. Clearing rooms is very fun for me too. My favorite tactic is waiting for my bois to arrive, everyone throws a grenade into the room, and everyone starts magdumping into a single guy.
RO2 players here, the game had so much potential... It remained infantry focus for competitiveness. Wished darkest hour elements were there too. We have Pacific Stuff half assed sadly.

The SMLE MK3* being standard issue for bits in he’ll let loose is actually fairly accurate. The No.4 was adopted in like 1943 I believe and didn’t get to most of the troops until even later in the war. The SMLE did a L O T of work for the Brits up to and beyond the end of the war
Does Darkest Hour have more concurrent players than RS1/RO2? Whenever I try looking for a match on Red Orchestra, the best there usually is, is a single half-full server, and Rising Storm servers usually only have player counts ranging in the single digits.
Ive only played the old ww2 single player games like cod classic on the psp when it comes to the FPS genre, seeing those old nostalgia become this active in multiplayer is amazing to me.
RO1 was the first non-Valve game I ever bought on Steam and is one of my favorite FPS games of all time. Unfortunately by the time DH came out had gotten out of PC gaming, and by the time I got back in most people had moved on to RO2. I had no idea people still played this, much less that it still got updates! Might have to give it a download
One thing to note, SMLE No1 MKIIIs were VERY prevalent in World War II. Nations part of the British Commonwealth like the Austalians and Indian Armies never adopted the No4, so they kept with the No1 MKIII for the entirety of the conflict (India even converted the No1 MKIII to fire 7.62 NATO in the Ishapore 2A1). Not only that, but even the British themselves used the No1 MKIII SMLE in North Africa, so it was very much present in WWII. The No4 MKI rifle wasn’t seen in the field until 1941. I even have a picture of a British commando unit in Crete, one with an SMLE No1 MKIII, and another with a No4 MKI(T) sniper.

The editing made me edge! Great job on the video, Oleg!! Also, I'm def using ur code for Stalcraft! Was meaning to play it :D
RO2 players here, the game had so much potential... It remained infantry focus for competitiveness. Wished darkest hour elements were there too. We have Pacific Stuff half assed sadly.
i haven't played this game in so long, i didn't know people still play this game. happy to see people still playing it
on the discord the community is pretty active, currently working on releasing italy update with new maps weapons vehicles and factions. so its still going strong by an old but still great community
Lets play @tacoman473!!
Totally true! In this Red Orchestra game series what was my biggest positive surprise is the realism of how the weapons work! Even the trajectory of bullets seems legit!
Don't take this as a negative thing but 20:19 thats a Tiger II H and either way that PTRD wouldn't have saved you either
im also suprised the transmission was able to make it to you before killing itself
and as always amazing video Br0leg
IVE BEEN WAITING FOR SOMEONE TO TALK ABOUT THIS GAME FOR AGES!
thank you good sir

I love how that guy just starts freaking out and screaming over the mic when he got into that melee combat with that German.
10:40 LMAOOOOOOOOOOO
I usually don't watch these videos (for some reason got it recommended) but this was genuinely entertaining and hilarious as hell like 90% of the time, one of the best that i've ever watched.
You have reminded me that this mod exists and you're now making me want to redownload it and give it another try. Thank you, Br0leg.
I wish there was a new WW2 shooter with mid 2000s style of graphics, its brings so much nostalgia back
its so different to how it was in 2009-2012, loved it back then though.
Overcame an overdose to run to my PC to watch this
Dude what?
The SMLE MK3* being standard issue for bits in he’ll let loose is actually fairly accurate. The No.4 was adopted in like 1943 I believe and didn’t get to most of the troops until even later in the war. The SMLE did a L O T of work for the Brits up to and beyond the end of the war
Darkest hour is an absolute blast, hope you play again soon!!
The map variety seen here is insane! Buying Ostfront now to see more!
Does Darkest Hour have more concurrent players than RS1/RO2?
Whenever I try looking for a match on Red Orchestra, the best there usually is, is a single half-full server, and Rising Storm servers usually only have player counts ranging in the single digits.
DUUUDE IVE BEEN WAITING FOR SOMEONE TO COVER IT. BEST SHOOTER OF THE YEAR
I like the Medal of Honor: Airborne music on the backgroud. I still remember those guys with gasmasks and MG42's. My first ever PTSD.
I NEED to download this. It looks awesome!
Prepare for lot of painful dying and lots of chaos xDDD It is addictive
Ive only played the old ww2 single player games like cod classic on the psp when it comes to the FPS genre, seeing those old nostalgia become this active in multiplayer is amazing to me.
I would say considering older ones Hidden and Dangerous 2 is awesome, and new ones Easy Red 2 is really unique.
The “get some” had me deceased 😂
I used to play this and it was dead for a while. I’m glad it has been given some light by you brother
Played this game for years and it's yet to be outshone. Even graphically it has a charm
THANK YOU OLEG FOR SHOWING THE WORLD THIS GAME
I highly recommend Enlisted, its the most fun I have had since Battlefield 1
Glad to se Darkest Hour get some love, they walked so HLL and PS could run AND they still update the game.
The Medal of Honor Frontline soundtrack in the background is just ughh😩 so nostalgic
I Saw Gameplay Of This A While Back, Now You're Giving A Full Explanation Of What It Is, Coincidentally As I Remembered About OG Hoi Darkest Hour.
I Think The Algorithm Is Trying To Tell Me Something...
Awesome montage
10:28 That Darkest Dungeon's stress icon 🤣Nice one!
as always the death animations in red orchestra are superb
Probably the most fun i've had with a WW2 game in a long time. -KUNT
I was relieved when you said you were joking about hell let loose lol
Personal Favorites: Medal of Honor, Big Red One, Uboat, Silent Depths
8:22 average Hungarian chad speaking
That was me, i couldnt help it
Wow I've had Darkest Hour in my library for years and had no idea where it came from, lol.
Not sure about the soviet rifleman class but during the start of ww2 to mid war the British were still using the mkIII smle rifle until the no.4 was mass produced
The ONE problem I have with Darkest Hour is the way the Thompson pouches are fastened on. THEY WOULDN'T HAVE WORN IT THAT WAY &IQTJN ^QNJ&QV^NGJGV. Besides that it's the best WW2 shooter
Red Orchestra... This game was terrifying for me and fun 🥲
when i clicked this video i literally thought "this better be about red orchestra" and it kinda was, good stuff
I gotta get my desktop fired up and get this game again. Lots of good times.
