What are some of the drawbacks of having too rigid of a spine rating?
If you are using traditional archery equipment then the arrow will not fly properly because you'll get contact with the fletching in the knock. They will not bend around the bow properly like they would if the spine was correct. Issues are not always as noticeable with a compound bow, but it will impact how the bow will tune. Sometimes you will have a little difficulty getting it to tune properly if the spine is too stiff. I have had compound bows that were not tuning well when shooting through paper. I dropped to a lighter spine and quickly got bullet holes through the paper. It can depend on the bow and type of cam system.
With a heavier spine a bow can be more difficult to tune. I was shooting .250 spine arrows with 125 grain broad heads, I had to actually move the knocking point up an 1/8” to get it to shoot through paper.
Random question, I haven’t fired my bow in a while. Is it fine and I just need to lube the strings a bit? Anything I should look for before firing?
Definitely look it over. Measure the axle to axle length. If it's longer than it should be then the string and cables may have stretched and need to have twist added to get the bow back in spec. In general though, it should.be okay to shoot if it hasn't been used much..
