    I've played with these rollers before. It's easy to manipulate the results by altering throttle input. The quicker you hit the throttle, the quicker you pull off the rollers. I had an E350 and 535, and I could easily alter which one appeared to perform better on the rollers. I've never trusted these roller demonstrations ever since, especially ones from dealer or car reviewers of a certain brand. In my opinion, the best way to test AWD capabilities of a car is by testing them on a horizontal incline with the same tires. This has proven to be the best way, but not many people do it.

    Honestly I don't see why people say the Audi system is better. Mercedes cuts power a lot sooner, meaning it realizes the loss of grip sooner. With ESP turned off they performed the same.
    Think about it, you're on a wet road, the car starts sliding, you're in the Audi and the wheels are still accelerating trying to find traction when there's none.
    While in the Mercedes, SC kicks in much faster giving you back the control.

    • @zedmund9123
      @zedmund9123 5 років тому +8

      Yes the merc had about the same speed with ESP off, but are you going to drive on a wet road with ESP/traction control off? Its cutting the power sooner (more intrusive) but its not sending power back fast enough.

    • @SgtKanyo
      @SgtKanyo 5 років тому +5

      @@zedmund9123
      Exactly, you probably won't be driving without ESP, especially if you're looking for AWD.
      I'm a RWD type of guy, but I understand those who are looking for AWD are more interested in traction and safety and for that imo having the power cut faster is better. To prevent excessive wheelspin, you need to not just cut power to that wheel, but also slightly brake it so it can regain traction as soon as possible. A good example for this is if you floor a
      FWD car in wet conditions and the wheel starts spinning and you let go of the throttle immediately, the wheels will still be spinning. Same can happen with AWD in extreme conditions.

    • @4x4.tests.on.rollers
      @4x4.tests.on.rollers  5 років тому +14

      SgtKanyo Exactly, once tires start spinning, friction coefficient goes down. And when they are already sliding, they can slide easier than before wheel slip occurs.

    • @zedmund9123
      @zedmund9123 5 років тому +2

      @@SgtKanyo understood. Well, in extreme conditions.. I would probably prefer power to the wheels that already have traction to be able to control the already out of control situation. But thats just me, using the accelerator to maintain balance.. and its hard to go for a light brake in an emergency moment, too much braking and you will slide to heaven
      But based on what youve said the merc would definitely be better in preventing an emergency situation in the first place(cutting power).

    Actually people do not know much about all wheel drive. For the cars like C class and A4, all wheel drive is for better traction to drive on the road. In such extreme condition when 3 tires lose traction, it is not about how strong the car can distribute torque. The real off road vehicle would have differential lock, and you have to activate it manually to lock the torque distribution. Eventually, all the wheels would rotate at same speed with same torque regardless traction if the vehicle has all 3 locks, also such vehicle usually also have low gear to increase the torque by reducing the speed. Please check the physics of flying wheel. There are 3 differential locks and they come in order. Central lock causes front and rear tires have equal torque, rear lock causes both rear tire has equal torque, front lock just same as other. However, only a few real off road vehicles have front lock such as G class or Jeep Wrangler. For example, the current X5 does not have any lock, but the all new X5 has it as option. The old ML has lock, but the current GLE does not.

    • @4x4.tests.on.rollers
      @4x4.tests.on.rollers  5 років тому

      @Jun Jun I understand what you wanted to say, but your comment (and understanding) is full of huge mistakes. You can't lock the torque distribution by locker, they are doing exactly the opposite thing. Any lock (front/rear, left/right) causes that torque distribution is no more equal to 50-50, but varies from ~0-100 to ~100-0. Only open differentials have always equal torque.

    Personally from viewing, the Audi appears to let more revs due to the system realising a wheel still has suitable traction and letting the others spin freely to allow for future traction. The Benz does realise the wheel with traction but has a limited amount of wheel spin speed before cutting power if all wheels aren't moving after a certain point. One thinks it's stuck(Audi) hence why it allows more power till all wheels spin, the other thinks it's moving and losing traction(Benz) hence why it limits power to get all wheels to same speed which is for control and stability. In the end it's kind of inconclusive but they're doing as programmed

    The problem is that you can't compare two cars that are not comparable. For a really fair test it would require two cars with the same weight, the same tires, the same rim sizes, the same power and the same torque. Not to mention humidity and climatic conditions. Or the fact that the driver cannot reproduce the same movement in the same way for each of the two cars. I think that 4matic or Quattro, these two technologies are equivalent and very efficient, it's only a matter of taste. Power and torque doesn't matter either because neither of the cars will actually use the power/torque they have in this test, not even close. You could have 1000hp and 1000NM, and 200hp and 300NM in the other, and none of them will use their whole power. This is just a test of the AWD systems itself.

    I think these roller tests are slightly unfair to the cars. Even though it doesn't seem like the tires are sunk down between the rollers, the angle of the rollers (diameter of them) and the space between them, and the fact they spin (obviously) will effect how much power is needed to pull the car out of the rollers and I think we are underestimating the amount of power needed to do this.
    I would be very interested to see some rollers that are like 4-6" diameter or even 16-24" (and single roller). The smaller rollers spaced as close as possible and mounted in a recessed floor - like a dyno setup. The 16-24" rollers would be setup like a dyno setup as well. This would be much more expensive to setup but it would provide a more real world test for driving conditions on a flat surface or even ice that has been slightly chewed away b/c spinning tires (especially the 2 4"-6" rollers would mimick this better).
    I have a suspicion that all these cars would pass these tests with only one wheel driving the car. I think there is much more power needed to get off the rollers in the video than people think, which is why in many of these tests, cars with higher power or much less weight do much better on the test.

    Looking at the video, it looks like the Mercedes driver was always going easy on the gas pedal, while the Audi driver was pushing the gas a bit more, which makes it an unfair test. However, after reading the comments, the tester says that because the Mercedes ECU cuts the power at 1,000 RPMs, while Audi's ECU lets the revs go higher. If that's the case, then how about you give the viewers some type of visual clue as of the pressure applied on the gas pedal, and rpms maybe? This way, we can all witness that the drivers are applying the exact same pressure on the gas pedals, but each vehicle reacts differently by regulating the RPMs. We need something about that, otherwise, it really looks like it's not the same power applied on both cars.

    • @4x4.tests.on.rollers
      @4x4.tests.on.rollers  4 роки тому +1

      Idea is good, in fact there are some older videos with additional camera on speedometer & tachometer but here's another problem - we are always looking for optimum level of throttle: ua-cam.com/video/dFs0OOUtPeE/v-deo.html (speed range up to 30 km/h). This level is different in different cars, so within a minute we would get the comments that test is unfair cause throttle is not the same. Or why do we keep the car at 1000 rpm. So another camera needed on the foot. And another comments that the footage is fake and furthermore - driver is moving the steering wheel. So anyway I would have to expalin everything million times.

    I've seen a lot of cars fail the 3 roller test which I kind of find hard to believe. How much power can be transfered to a single wheel? If these cars have say 200hp and even if one wheel only gets 25%, that's 50hp which should be more than enough to move the car forward and over the tiny bump of the rollers. Now add in power split, where more power is sent to the wheel with grip, even if it's only 50% that's 100hp which should be PLENTY for all of these cars to move off the rollers - regardless if these cars are lacking torque (which they probably have a minimum of 180ftlbs at 1500 rpm in these models - probably much more.
    So why are they struggling? What am I missing here. I've driven cars that didn't weigh much less than these things but had only 71-110hp (some only ~75-112ft lbs torqrue) and even when one wheel was on ice, the other on pavement, it had plenty of power to drive off - but it was a 2wd car - I'be driven FWD & RWD cars like this. So these underpowered cars (with similar power per drive wheel) managed to drive off in icy conditions w/o any traction control & relying on driver "skill".
    Am I missing something with these AWD systems" how can they not drive off any roller when at least one wheel has full contact. I would think that would be a MANDATORY minimum for any AWD system, and any car that can't do that, I have to question the engineering and numbers they are claiming.
    So are these cars not getting off the rollers b/c they don't have enough power going to one wheel? Is it because of the physics of the roller's - having to drive the car up and over the slight diameter of the roller (which doesn't seem like much, but it might be more difficult than thought - I'd like to see the physics of this). We need a deeper look into this situation.

    • @4x4.tests.on.rollers
      @4x4.tests.on.rollers  4 роки тому +1

      There are many underpowered cars that can pass three roller tests, so it is all up to awd system and traction control. Software must be smart enough to recognise the situation and divide the torque. It doesn't matter if car has 1000hp or 100hp engine, there's just a small amount of that needed in the test. But that must be send to appriopriate wheel.
      These rollers are indeed "deep", so car must climb a little - that is also harder than it looks, in fact harder than an incline. There is technical drawing in FAQ 1 video.

    Nice video. It shows how a modern 4WD works. It's about electronics and they are nearly the same. The older Quattro Drive was way better, it was a real mechanical 4WD, but much more expensive to build. Today a 4WD is nothing more than an all wheel drive with all breaks controlled by sensors and electronics. Now it's up to the programmer, what his priorities are and it's always a compromise. When this cars getting older, there are to many things that can go wrong and break down. I prefer older Quattros and Subarus. I really would like to see the same test old Quattro vs. new one.

      There is no old Quattro which can pass all tests, it is probably the same with Subaru: ua-cam.com/video/PnzRqM3FlWA/v-deo.html

      That is not comparison of cars, but of awd systems, which are the same in A4/A6 and C/E.
