It takes big balls to publish videos like this. The fangroups will not like these facts. There will be complaints about "to much throttle, too little throttle, why didn't you use drive mode alpha, is the car serviced, why did you turn the steering wheel?!" and so on. Brace yourselves!
As always kudos to this channel for it's constantly awesome work. Extra kudos for putting up with all the salty fangroups!

A lot of the engine power get lost because of brake engaging. The electronic system try to brake spinning wheels to transfer power to the wheel(s) with grip. Thats necessary because the car has only open differentials. Without brake engaging, the car wouldn't past any of this tests.

not true. The mercedes has a transfercase with a cluch packs to 50nm. This is an important thing like different to the w210 series. The w210 serie could come to stuck in some situation. i've been reading all the comments and what most people forget ist that rollers are the worst case scenario, zero traction literally. It just shows how different awd/4wd systems work. In real life a tire has even on ice a tiny bit of grip and 4matic and quattro will find enough grip to move the car. The quattro is more front biased and the 4matic more rear biased but it is my own opinion so feel free to correct me if you know better.

Nice video, but the problem with all those rollers' tests is that they do not show an actual real-life situation behavior of the car. something is not ok with the benz because the e500 has 4ets and sbc (sensotronic brake system). If you turn on ESP, the system can control all the 100% of the power to only 1 wheel in 200 milisecond if its necessary.
E500 4matic until 2006 can do the same like a g klass or ml with offroad pack.

    • @4x4.tests.on.rollers

Everything is fine. It is not possible to direct all power to one wheel by brakes that fast, it requires clutch-packs. Here the Benz is based on open diffs, this test is very difficult for this kind of awd system.

But only in the e500 4matic. The other type of w211 does not have it. The older series w210 does not have. But its also not important because realted with 4ets and sbc, the system can controll in 200 ms all the power to only 1 wheel. Belive me. I also tested with the same procedure and it is possible. The open diff are possible to get 3 differential to close with 4ets. Thats the different to x drive and quattro.

not true. Read about the 4ets system with sbc. In 200ms 100% to only one wheel with grip. The transfercase has in the middle the cluth packs. This controls the spinning by start up from the rear right wheel to the left wheel to 50nm. The rear diff is 3.27. In the normaly e500 without 4matic has the rear diff 2.65 in Europe, in usa 2.82. If the cluth does not works, its knocking loud by turning left or right. This is the best of the the 4 matic. In 1997 comes 4matic in ml to the market and this was the best awd of the world until today. You can see in the video that esp is not all the time turned off. This is the problem. If you do not turn off the motor electric will be also breaked by esp. Esp is since 1998 in the ml and it controlls only the stability and also with motor managing. If you turn it off all 4 wheels can spin to 60 % and only 40% is for safety on. Belive me. The 3 wheels does not spin in this video and in this moment the system should controll the whole power to this 3 wheels. Thats is 4 matic. What do you think why is it functioning on ice roads but only without esp? If the mercedes is in this video built after 2005 and does not have sbc, it can not controll in 200 ms. Sbc is an electronic break system and according to 4ets can control in 200ms.

The 4Matic problem is simple . This generation of 4Matic is a fulltime 4wd, with a torque bias FR/RR of 40/60, with 3 open differentials ans only the 4-ETS (traction control). There is one thing to understand, a traction control system, unlike a limited split differential or a locker, doesn't change the torque biais of a differential, here, the center differential. It seems here that 4-ETS is effective to stop wheels spins...

The behavior of an AWD system depends strongly on the remaining drag on the wheels. In the tested near zero grip situation, the classic quattro without assisting electronic couldn't do much. In other (real) situation with more remaining grip on wheels it performs much better. But this tests bring more clear results than comparisons on reality.

@@b.s.7693 That's correct, however there are many examples where Quattro got stuck in winter conditions just like on rollers. Mainly older versions. In such situation torsen is almost the same as open diff, so that's nothing unusual.
