    I don’t know if those “sailors” were actors or real sailors but they did an excellent job portraying how real sailors would operate in a situation like this

      You're kidding right? 1) that's not how a CO talks on the radio... that information would likely come via message traffic 2) the CO isn't going to start barking commands like that, especially ordering helm commands from combat. 3) overall, this would be a MUCH less dramatic start.

      @@David-ql1hd1. That is similar to how you speak over the net. They rogered up to who they were speaking to and announced where they were speaking from. 2. It is very common for the triad to do walkthroughs in combat. Especially in a high risk situation like this scene. Also a lot of helm commands do come from combat. They’ll often give course and speed to avoid collisions. Not saying what’s shown here is perfect, but it’s better than most.

      @@David-ql1hdThey’re real sailors, you have to remember that this is a dramatization and heavily influenced by Hollywood. They need to dumb down for the common person to understand. They did the exact same thing in Apollo 13 also staring Tom Hanks. Like showing all the supplies they could use to fit a square peg into a round hole, everyone in the room in reality would be very aware of the situation but it needs to be explained for the audience.

    Why tf do ships not have armed guards on board instead of wasting navy resources?

    • @sksaddrakk5183
      @sksaddrakk5183 5 місяців тому +28

      It is not that easy. A lot of countries do not accept ships carrying weapons and will not allow them to enter their ports. These ships are built to make a profit, which is much more difficult to do if you cannot call half of the ports. Secondly and more importantly it is the navy's job in the first place to secure shipping lines, protect their mercantile ships and fight piracy. This is literally why navies are maintained in peace time. Fighting in wars is just a small part of their duties.

    • @rangerscorpiorac2383
      @rangerscorpiorac2383 5 місяців тому +10

      Thata literally why the US Navy was created. Was to fight pirates. Barbary pirates to be specific

      @Tank50us 5 місяців тому

      @@rangerscorpiorac2383 Which funny enough took two rounds to fully put down.
      But to answer the OPs question. It should be noted that most ports don't have an issue with ships carrying armed security (many use armed guards as it is), but we're talking personal weapons here. M16s, M14s, etc. Enough to fight off the odd skiff, but nothing that will fight off a dedicated warship. The main issue is that armed guards aren't technically part of the ships company (IE, they aren't employed by the people who own the ship), and aren't typically trained to do anything BUT protect the ship, which in a damage control situation could be a liability. The fact they're contracted also means that getting rid of specific individuals is a lot harder, so if one is jerk to the rest of the crew, it can be difficult to get rid of him.
      Now, as for why these companies don't just buy a few dozen weapons per ship, lock them up, and train the crew on them... well... weapons that sit for a while, especially aboard an ocean-going ship, tend to run into corrosion issues due to the salt in the air, same with any ammunition stored. They also become a liability of anyone gets aboard that isn't supposed to be there (like Pirates). Finally, there's the matter of actually training the crew to fight.... which is itself very expensive and time consuming. Ergo, it's actually more cost affective for the company to contract out the security work. But due to the other issues mentioned, many just don't do it.
      The TLDR: It's a very expensive headache that is unnecessary in about 99% of trips. If there were more areas that were high risk, then odds are the companies would be more willing to hire security companies to protect their ships when the words navies can't (it is a big ocean after all).

      What do you think a job of the Navy is? It’s protecting maritime trade.

    • @56bturn
      @56bturn 5 місяців тому +3

      Some actually do, but they're contractors, so it becomes an expense issue.
      But some ships are, in fact, guarded by armed contractors, and they are an effective deterrent, as it's hard to board a ship at the best of times, doing so whilst getting shot at is not fun.

    What amazes me is that these stupid “pirates” were able to board the ship to start with. They had to climb a ladder to get over the rail. One good old boy with a can of hairspray and a lighter could take the face off the first one when he popped up. If the others were stubborn enough to come on, they could have some too.

      @@bigbowlowrong4694 Oh, right. I forgot the pirates had six arms apiece. If you watch closely, the one climbing the ladder had his “automatic rifle” slung, and was using BOTH HANDS to climb their rickety pirate ladder. I assure you his noggin could have been fried before he got his weapon into action. And even as stupid and dimwitted as they were, once the first fell screaming off the ladder, the others likely would have found somewhere else to be.
