When I got my fist OT, I read the manual and was very confused. Three months later, I sold my OT. When I got my second OT, I took an online video tutorial class, read the manual and everything made so much more sense. I still have that OT four years later and just bought my third OT. Love it. The manual by itself doesn’t make sense, at least didn’t to me, until I was actually able to see it in action while someone explained what was happening.
I’ve been circling around between the OT manual, Merlin and the Messy fist the past few weeks and this has crystallized WHY OT is so powerful. You can find endless variation within a section/pattern in discrete sonic units(scenes) switching, slapping, sliding or scratching between any two. Then parts allow sectional contrast to be subtly or radically delineated. Your example of switching out master Fx is a good one; maximize destruction or build transitions as needed. Since master is limited to two Fx this critical I think. Introducing new machines: If your are a guitarist or want play keys a thru or pickup machine with a neighbor can replace a lead part playing on a flex machine. Thanks for your dedication, tasty trap, good humor and sharing your wife’s comments. Keep up the great work.
This video was not only very interesting and brought me forward in my octatrack workflow. I also loved your humor in between! Very varied in between those serious techno producers I watch normally. Definitely worth a subscription :)
Lol you are very funny. I don't understand very well english but the the fact I see your face and moves help a lot. I watched almost all your video about OT in a row and you comfort me to buy it soon. Keep making theses awsome videos :)
I just lost a whole bunch of super sweet patterns because I was under the impression that I could change FX inside patterns. WHOOPS! This has led me here to learn about parts. I understand the concept now. It is definitely different and at first it seemed counter-intuitive and stupid and overly complicated. But I have realized the benefits. It's actually really powerful and smart. Thanks for the clarification Bro-Seph! :)
"your fist in my butt for a cybertruck "should be on a t-shirt hahaha. Can't wait to get an octatrack hopefully next month. I love you and your videos, Dan.
You're a fucking godsend. Not only a great teacher, but also an epic gamer and most importantly a fellow society member. Not sure your cybertruck plan is gonna work tho
Nice vid messy. It’s cool to reload the part to get a digitakt like performance, but the other cool thing about that performance trick on the digis is the control all feature, like reversing all tracks or pitching up all tracks or messing with sample start point on all tracks, etc then resetting. Wish control all was avail on the Octatrack. Hopefully on an update
that’s definitely a super good point, and would be an awesome future update for the OT. one of the mitigating things it has is just more options to tweak, even if you can’t tweak it all at once, i suppose. i do sometimes wish i had a DT to pair with my OT though. maybe someday when i’ve achieved enough success to be that maximalist
I'm glad you read the manual and found it illuminating, because I read it and felt like I came from a different planet to the writer of it. It's by far my least favourite manual.
Hey man. Great videos. Really appreciated. Thinking of getting an Octatrack again and was just watching for gas help and you have reminded me things i have forgotten, stuff I didn’t know and made me chuckle. Thanks.
i’ve read merlins guide and definitely think it’s required reading for anyone using an OT. but i also covered most of what he does in it here, absent of his scene stacking technique. so i’m not sure what you mean. if you’re saying merlins guide is a better resource than my videos, that’s gonna be a hearty “agree” from me though lol
I came to you with thoughts of learning the Octatrack, and I left a better person. Love the videos. Very relatable... which might not be a good thing. Anyways, thanks OctaDad
Informative, amusing, I love Cornel West like I hate 1 pattern songs without parts. Merlin is my Octadad but you can be my octapus if you promise to keep the face cam.
For your back just keep a bar with weights, about 100 lb. nearby and lift it around 8 times every 20 minutes or so, 5 sets. Do a dead lift into military press. This is a compound exercise that will strengthen your back. For back safety, think mentally of pushing the ground away from you which will keep you from lifting initially with your back.
‘Parts’ should be called “Orchestras” or “Bands” and it would make more sense. I’ve had an Octatrack for 7 or 8 years, and I never managed to get comfortable with the arranger. A bigger screen like you get on some devices would have really helped with this. As a musician, I’m always frustrated by the number 16! Why can’t I just record 196 steps, like I would with a tape recorder? It’s really frustrating to have to build up songs bit-by-bit, and this is really where the Octatrack loses out to the DAWs in my view. [I don’t use DAWs anymore for my music but a 32-track digital reorder - tactile!] Another cool feature is the storage of up to 16 scenes for each pattern (or is it per bank 😉). You can then assign any of these scenes to the A and B buttons on the fly to build in a ton of variety. If you look for Merlin’s ‘Some thoughts on the Octatrack’ you will find further helpful hints which will help better understand the manual.
during the parts reloading thing, what is that effect u did the one u said was your favorite... ? it sounded a fair bit like gate work, is that only available on the mk2 cuz i've never been able otmake my og octa make that proscess so far as i know and i want to fux with that something hard.
should def be available on the mk1! it’s the lofi effect and the parameters i’m messing with are the AMD and AMF. pretty sure it’s amplitude modulation depth and frequency respectively. it’s literally my favorite OT effect so i’m stoked to share it!
@@AtTheTableGames thanks brutha man! p.s. i like your face. as well as your fun explinational videos. i've been messing with my octatrack for a few years now and there's always more to learn with the damned delightfull device. now i just need to wrap my head around making a full set instead of just making tracks.... the joys of being a dj that freestyles everyset, it's impossible to wrap my head around designing one from start to finish.
at 8 mins in how did ypu get the sample for the intro to play fully without looping back to the beggining after the 64bars (4pages) i been dying to know how to let the sample play without looping back to first page
You could make it a one shot trig or you could change the scale of the track to move really slowly, so it doesn't loop every 64 bars, or you could set a trig condition so that the sample only plays once every 4 full repetitions of the pattern.
I just wish OT would get an update so it ressembles the Digitakt Patterns/Banks model, with independant samples per track per pattern. And use patterns for machine switching. Maybe assign the slider to part switching and morph between machines (crazy).
So on one bank, you basically have 32 samples available + sample locking? A flex track basically needs a reference sample loaded onto it and then you can sample lock 63 steps with 1 sample per trig? Am I correct? 🥸
Anyone use the arranger to build out most of their tracks (like building out a verse and chorus and then switching parts for a live solo loop using the pickup machine)?

Hey, wait. I came here for Parts: The Clonus Horror. I've already had to put up with some dude and his robots cracking jokes over this cinematic classic.
I really, really resent that you made me laugh! The Octadad thing is frankly disturbing and I would rather not have a mental picture of you being fisted by Elon Musk. That being said, it's a great video that does a really good job at demystifying Parts. Keep up the good work, and give Elon some love. He seems like he's more than the sum of his parts (fists, for example). Nice!
The Messy Desk Just messing. Love the videos and sense of humor. The Octatrack is one complex beast, but ur approach and tips are FINALLY helping me breakthrough! For that I’m grateful.
so scenes are contained WITHIN parts. so whenever you assign a new part to a pattern, you’ll be given 16 new scenes to work with. remember that by default, all patterns are assigned part 1 by default, but you can break that default assignment by assigning part 2, 3, or 4 manually using the Parts menu. feel free to reply with more questions if you have them, im happy to help where i can
@@AtTheTableGames nice! I watch and rewatch your material a lot so between that and your answer, a lot of the little things make more sense now. Thanks

came for parts. subbed for cybertrucks.
This is the best one ever....I miss your Elektron videos, but I've still got lots in the bank to watch.
wow, i didn’t know you could change machines in different parts, just samples... makes a huge difference, thanks.
I love how your wife laughs at your “jokes”. It’s great!
I don't even have an Octatrack I'm just here for the commentary!

I think the important thing to consider the manual is talking about an Octatrak but not your Octatrak.
Best breakdown of parts 😍 thank you for taking the time to make this video x
That was spectaculary entertaining, keep em coming!
Thank you for that message at the end about the four bar loop, that's all I do.

A better primer might be reading "merlin's guide on the octatrack" - it covers what the manual did not about parts.

so much fun! 👍
I think the value of Sets is that each set has it’s own self-contained sample bank - I guess it’s tidier but like yourself, I never use them.
youre great
But you could pitch the sample up in the same part using parameter locks right? But then you can't make new scènes though
Messy with that BDE

Timecode only the improvised humor segments :).

About your wife: hotter than expected. Also, thanks for the parts vid. Basic stuff, but it's always good to hear somebody else's take.
If you can just go ahead and not talk about politics, that'd be great pal
Little less goofing would be nice too tho. 28 minutes could be easily turned into 20 or even 15 (just dreaming) with exact the same usefulness
