    When I got my fist OT, I read the manual and was very confused. Three months later, I sold my OT. When I got my second OT, I took an online video tutorial class, read the manual and everything made so much more sense. I still have that OT four years later and just bought my third OT. Love it. The manual by itself doesn’t make sense, at least didn’t to me, until I was actually able to see it in action while someone explained what was happening.

    I’ve been circling around between the OT manual, Merlin and the Messy fist the past few weeks and this has crystallized WHY OT is so powerful. You can find endless variation within a section/pattern in discrete sonic units(scenes) switching, slapping, sliding or scratching between any two. Then parts allow sectional contrast to be subtly or radically delineated. Your example of switching out master Fx is a good one; maximize destruction or build transitions as needed. Since master is limited to two Fx this critical I think. Introducing new machines: If your are a guitarist or want play keys a thru or pickup machine with a neighbor can replace a lead part playing on a flex machine.
    Thanks for your dedication, tasty trap, good humor and sharing your wife’s comments. Keep up the great work.

    I just lost a whole bunch of super sweet patterns because I was under the impression that I could change FX inside patterns. WHOOPS!
    This has led me here to learn about parts. I understand the concept now. It is definitely different and at first it seemed counter-intuitive and stupid and overly complicated.But I have realized the benefits. It's actually really powerful and smart. Thanks for the clarification Bro-Seph! :)

    Nice vid messy. It’s cool to reload the part to get a digitakt like performance, but the other cool thing about that performance trick on the digis is the control all feature, like reversing all tracks or pitching up all tracks or messing with sample start point on all tracks, etc then resetting. Wish control all was avail on the Octatrack. Hopefully on an update

    • @AtTheTableGames
      @AtTheTableGames  4 роки тому

      that’s definitely a super good point, and would be an awesome future update for the OT. one of the mitigating things it has is just more options to tweak, even if you can’t tweak it all at once, i suppose. i do sometimes wish i had a DT to pair with my OT though. maybe someday when i’ve achieved enough success to be that maximalist

    A better primer might be reading "merlin's guide on the octatrack" - it covers what the manual did not about parts.

    • @AtTheTableGames
      @AtTheTableGames  4 роки тому +6

      i’ve read merlins guide and definitely think it’s required reading for anyone using an OT. but i also covered most of what he does in it here, absent of his scene stacking technique. so i’m not sure what you mean. if you’re saying merlins guide is a better resource than my videos, that’s gonna be a hearty “agree” from me though lol

    For your back just keep a bar with weights, about 100 lb. nearby and lift it around 8 times every 20 minutes or so, 5 sets. Do a dead lift into military press. This is a compound exercise that will strengthen your back. For back safety, think mentally of pushing the ground away from you which will keep you from lifting initially with your back.

  • @MrMusicbyMartin

    ‘Parts’ should be called “Orchestras” or “Bands” and it would make more sense.
    I’ve had an Octatrack for 7 or 8 years, and I never managed to get comfortable with the arranger. A bigger screen like you get on some devices would have really helped with this. As a musician, I’m always frustrated by the number 16! Why can’t I just record 196 steps, like I would with a tape recorder? It’s really frustrating to have to build up songs bit-by-bit, and this is really where the Octatrack loses out to the DAWs in my view. [I don’t use DAWs anymore for my music but a 32-track digital reorder - tactile!]
    Another cool feature is the storage of up to 16 scenes for each pattern (or is it per bank 😉). You can then assign any of these scenes to the A and B buttons on the fly to build in a ton of variety.
    If you look for Merlin’s ‘Some thoughts on the Octatrack’ you will find further helpful hints which will help better understand the manual.

    • @user82938
      @user82938 Рік тому

      You could make it a one shot trig or you could change the scale of the track to move really slowly, so it doesn't loop every 64 bars, or you could set a trig condition so that the sample only plays once every 4 full repetitions of the pattern.

  • @taratantara
    @taratantara 3 роки тому

    I just wish OT would get an update so it ressembles the Digitakt Patterns/Banks model, with independant samples per track per pattern. And use patterns for machine switching. Maybe assign the slider to part switching and morph between machines (crazy).

    • @taratantara
      @taratantara 3 роки тому

      So on one bank, you basically have 32 samples available + sample locking? A flex track basically needs a reference sample loaded onto it and then you can sample lock 63 steps with 1 sample per trig? Am I correct? 🥸
