Good video and happy to see more doing their own maintenance. Every rider should do so. Just a quick correction, the "Throttle Free-play" is the distance from when you first turn the throttle to the point where it ACTUALLY engages the throttle which is what the 2-3mm is a reference to. Keep up the good videos!
On a personal rant: I think the biggest load of crap is motorcycle warranty. 1 year?? They are betting most riders wont ride in the snow or bad weather. I purchased my new Kawasaki in October 2019. It was stored in the garage by December when the cold, rain and snow made it impossible to ride. I got it out this year around March. I have ridden it a whopping total of 560 miles in 6 months, but my warranty will expire in less than 2 months. Given the seasonal nature of riding, manufactures should at the very least offer a 2 year warranty. This hurts the dealer network as I will not be taking my bike to them for routine service as I have no incentive to do so. Having a longer warranty and enforcing routine maintenance would go a long way to helping dealers. Thanks for a good video.
Blame your country for having lax consumer rights and bending to corporations. In other countries in Europe and Australia, Bikes and Cars are sold with 2 years warranty as STANDARD and 3 years if you service the bike/car with the company that made your bike/car since the consumer laws are a lot stronger and vehicle makers are not allowed to sell if they don't follow them. America bends backwards too much to lobbyists and corporations.
I ride a 2017 Ninja 650 with 60k miles on it, and I have always done my own maintenance and actually just this year, completely rebuilt my motorcycle from the frame. (New swingarm, engine, plastics, everything). And I did all of ny maintenance using that User Manual. When it came to rebuilding the bike, I bought a $20 Official Kawasaki Shop Manual that had everything I ever needed to know to do this rebuild. Save time and money by doing the work yourself. Excellent video, and hope everyone rides safe
Thanks LJ! Just hit 600 on mine and they quoted me WAY to high so thanks for the walkthrough and saving me money 👍 also I love how you went threw the whole 600 mile service not just the oil change

I just got my first motorcycle. Ninja 650. Thanks for making this video for everyone. Helping people is always Great. Now I know the easy way as I'm cleaning my bike I can listen to your information that you share. It saved me alot of time and stress. So Thank You.🤓
I'm not a big social media guy but this guy right here needs more love then he's getting! When you can get my attention for 18 mins straight your doing something right! I'll say it again you are the SHIT!!
'17 Ninja 650 here. I do most of mine too. Actually all of it so far. For chain maintenance, my rule of thumb is whenever it rains or I end up on a gravel road for some reason, I clean and lube. Other wise it's every two gas tank fills. This fall, I'm going to replace my brake lines with braided ones and change the pads and fluid at the same time. We'll see how the chain and sprocket are around that time too, so get it all done at once and then get it ready for the winter. I love this bike. I put on new tires and it made a difference for grip in wet and the feeling in curves. So much fun on it, isn't it?
I'm so glad I found this video- and your whole channel really! You're very relaxed, without an "in your face" personality; music is relaxing too. I don't wanna feel stressed working on my bike, and you've helped me feel calm thinking "yeah, I can do this." I really liked how you displayed the owner's manual, and showed everything as you did it- explaining what you're doing and why. I now feel even more confident buying my first bike -a ninja 650

Like others have said, you deserve more subscribers. I'm about to be a new rider and you're making the choice a lot easier! I'm actually getting the same bike you have but the black/green one. Good luck on your channel!
Awesome Video Bro. The first service is something that us consumers can do ourselves, especially if you follow the manual. My local dealer wants $250.00 for the first service, excluding the oil and filter. What a rip off! It's a new bike and Kawasaki always tightens all their nuts, and bolts before releasing the bike to the dealership. Please keep up the content. Peace......

I have the exact same bike, 2019 Ninja 650 ABS. I would suggest to you and any of your viewers to use a Fumoto oil drain valve instead of a drain plug - makes life much easier down the road. Been using them on my cars for years, zero issues. The one from the Versys 650 fits this, same engine.
Nice one dude, very informative. Personally I think it’s a no brainer doing your own servicing. It’s a sense of achievement and also knowing that you’ve done it properly. I’ve just bought a new Kawasaki w800 and I’m looking forward to doing my own servicing. When you try to sell your bike later down the line, most people are just interested in how little they can get it for never mind the dealer stamps in the book. 👍
My 2022 ninja 650 has 571 miles on it. Dealership quoted me 275 before tax for the first service. With your video I’m contemplating doing the first one myself or letting the dealership do the first one and me doing the rest.
I wonder why they tell you to lube the o-rings. That is how you lube a non-o-ring chain but I see no need to put oil on the o-rings. Did I miss something?
That's a great question! I am not sure of the answer since I'm only familiar with this method. The other method I've heard requires taking the chain off and soaking it or something along those lines. Thanks for the question I'll do some digging as well
Greetings LJ-Very informative video, I may be picking up a ninja650 next spring(I used to ride many years ago)my question is about the transmission fluid; since it wasn't mentioned in the owners manual I can assume the ninja650 doesn't require transmission fluid and that the oil takes care of both engine and transmission?
I would always get the First Service Done by the Dealer..peace of Mind But you are Right Read the Owners Book there are Torque numbers for sump Bolt Axle Nut Get a Torque wrench!
I live in nyc so doing the maintenance myself is not ideal when parked on the street it sucks because I would love to work in it myself. I have the 2019 650 . I want to install my fender eliminator kit myself as well but from some digging around in the net I keep hearing of stories where dealers/Kawasaki void warranties for doing work yourself even when the issues doesn’t have anything to do with what you modified.
I've heard if you have electrical issues they could be difficult and say it was on you. Most of the time though exhausts and performance mods are what they go after for voiding warranties. The warranty debate has all sorts of stories and I'd hate to tell you one way or another. I took the chance on mine with only 500 miles on it. If my motor fails and they say it's because of that then I would be surprised and I'd need them to justify that. My next thing is changing the headlights and I hope that's ok with them too.
It’s time for my first service on my 2022 Ninja 650. I was also thinking about taking it to the dealer, but I’ll go through the manual. If I don’t have to pay for a check and can do it all myself, why not?
I've done the maintenance myself but there still a "service" notification that pops up every time I start the engine. Is there a way to get rid of it? Love your enthousiasm!
Thanks! So I know for a fact the dealership can but I didn't find anything in the manual. I know I saw on the z125 there's some crazy steps. Idk if they work on our bike. Turn on the ignition switch and start the engine. Keep the idling speed more than 30 seconds. Run the vehicle more than 5 minutes at a speed of 40 km/h (25 mph) or more. Be sure to keep the engine running during the procedures 2 and 3 for more than 10 minutes in total. Turn the ignition switch off. repeat the above procedures 3 times. Start the engine and check that the yellow engine warning indicator (LED) goes off.
Very informative video, my 2020 Nina 1000SX is now due it’s 600 mile service. Was wondering if you or anyone could advise on how to rest the service indicator on the dash after the service?
The reset from what I've heard is like a cheat code gotta start it let it idle and then ride and all these other things I don't have down lol. I'd see if you can find a manual
This is an amazing video, thank you very much for this man, I just got myself a used ninja 650 with about 700 miles on it, I'll try to see if this was done or not. I'm subscribing to your channel !!!
Hey bud... watched ur vids recently, cuz I bought the same bike here from a buddy recently with less than 1000 miles, but it sat for a while. Any chance you've removed fuel injectors before?
What's up! Yeah I have before but never on this bike. I need to get some more riding in though I've been slacking! Hope you can find some good resources out there to help
Bro at the manual it's said that to change Drain Bolt Gasket every oil change service. Can you clarify that? Now I just know when changing the oil engine, must change the oil filter, only these two things
It's recommended to change everytime because technically you risk it not sealing up the right way everytime they warp and get corroded etc. I change mine on my cars like every other oil change! I know some people who never change it lol
Thanks for the heads up my brotha. I’m getting into riding this year and advanced knowledge is good to have so we know that we’re not being taken advantage of. Where are you located at? I plan on doing some road trips in my 650
@@kylefranklin2936 I travel out there since I went to school in Silver Spring but never on the bike lol that's too far for me. My hands can't handle more than an hour or so :(
LJs Garage my cover is silver and it looks like the seat is kinda silver now so maybe it rubbed its color on to the seat? Haha no sure but it makes me sad lol
Weirdest thing just happen. I took my bike in for a oil change and got it back with the with check engine light on. Now there tellling it’s nothing to do with the oil change. I should of took it to a Kawasaki dealer but it was local bike shop in my area that is certified by the state. Now I’m left wondering wat the heck. Prior to this my temperate gauge was shooting up pretty high one bar away from maxing out all the way to the H mark. Idk if that have something to do with it or the gauge going up like that is normal I mean its still pretty cold in New York so I’m puzzled. do your temperature gauge ever pass the half way point? Or goes higher? Or it stay steady ?
Sorry to hear that! My temp gauge goes up about 5/6th when I'm sitting still then it cools back down with the fans or once I start riding. Scared me at first but that's how these are.
LJs Garage ok so I guess it pretty normal then . So now after taking my bike to these people my check engine line goes on making me wonder if they put the wrong oil in my bike . Cuz it was jus the gauge I was concerned with before and you bike does the same thing mine does, now I. Have a check engine light after they did the oil change smh
@@roverlacai3102 That really sucks! Have you tried the self-diagnosis mode? If you check the manual it tells you how if I recall correctly. You do a trick with the buttons on the display. It should at least tell you what the code is.
Jus wanna give u an update on my bike. I took for a 15miles ride on the Highway took it up to 7rpm for the first time in the break in stage now at 258 miles on dash. After riding to and from 30miles Total the light went off so i guess it was the engine not recognizing the oil change initially. Thank you
@@LJsGarage you didn't use a genuine oil filter, it looks like a k&n , if you going to do stuff yourself and then go back to the dealer for warranty ,if you ever need it that is, then you should at least use genuine parts
Amazon if I remember correctly "Kawasaki Oil Filter Part Number 16097-0007" I believe or if anything K&N at AutoZone KN-303. Double check that though it's been a minute. Had those written down but idk which I went with lol
i work as a motorcycle mechanic for over 25 years and can do everything my own but i am not allowed to lol... if i do my any service on my new bike i will lose the warranty..... i have to go to a certified Dealership and let them do it and pay 230 for work i can do in 30min myself..... that's how warranty rules work here in Europe... 🤢🤮🤮🤮👿👿👿👿
Yep, new oil filter & it comes with gasket already and then for the drain plug I reused everything. Technically it's recommended to get a new plug washer everytime, but I dont do that everytime just after so many oil changes. Hope thats what you're looking for!

I’m in Maryland just outside the Baltimore area
@@kylefranklin2936 I travel out there since I went to school in Silver Spring but never on the bike lol that's too far for me. My hands can't handle more than an hour or so :(
I have the same bike too, have you had fading on your rear seat? I keep it covered and idk what to do to fix it and keep it from happening again
No fading on my seat at all. That's crazy for it to Happen so fast
LJs Garage yeah It does...I’ll look it up thanks
Jus wanna give u an update on my bike. I took for a 15miles ride on the Highway took it up to 7rpm for the first time in the break in stage now at 258 miles on dash. After riding to and from 30miles Total the light went off so i guess it was the engine not recognizing the oil change initially. Thank you
Mine just didn’t come with a manual though
Lol can't argue with that then
Great video! I have 2021 Ninja 400 videos in my channel I may do an Owners manual walkthrough LJ style. Thanks again
Thank you my friend!
Very well explained thanks bro
My pleasure
What kind of Oil and filter did you use? Kawasaki 10w40 or just one from your auto store.
I used the Kawasaki recommended filter and oil. I got it from the dealership nearby.
@@LJsGarage you didn't use a genuine oil filter, it looks like a k&n , if you going to do stuff yourself and then go back to the dealer for warranty ,if you ever need it that is, then you should at least use genuine parts
Hi sir, how many kilometer before changing engine oil?
Around 5-7k miles is a safe spot
Perks of having the Z650 is that it doesn't have so much plastic I need to remove haha
Haha true that!
Me again what was your oil amount you put in your bike??
1.8/1.9 q lol
Great review. Thx 👍
Thanks Dan!
What type of oil filter did you purchased??
Amazon if I remember correctly "Kawasaki Oil Filter Part Number 16097-0007" I believe or if anything K&N at AutoZone KN-303. Double check that though it's been a minute. Had those written down but idk which I went with lol
@@LJsGarage thank you I appreciate it
Where did u get your bike stands?
They are Harbor Freights finest!
Great video. Tyvm
Thanks for watching! Very welcome:)
Thank-you Brother.
Anytime, appreciate the comment ✊🏿

Valid!
Great video! Thank you kind sir!
Very welcome 👌🏿👌🏿
I just bought a 2018 ninja 650!
Congrats my Friend!
The stealership will ONLY half-ass change your oil, scratch your bike and sign off on ALL other items without checking them. Ask me how I know..
Agreed! And the majority of this is not hard and helps people to get familiar with something they should check regularly
i work as a motorcycle mechanic for over 25 years and can do everything my own but i am not allowed to lol... if i do my any service on my new bike i will lose the warranty..... i have to go to a certified Dealership and let them do it and pay 230 for work i can do in 30min myself..... that's how warranty rules work here in Europe... 🤢🤮🤮🤮👿👿👿👿
haha what a shame and same here in the US for the most part
Solid video thanks
Anytime! Ride safe 👌🏿
2020 ninja 400 si alguien lo quiero diganmelo se los puedo dar en PDF
Thanks for this video
Most welcome!
Diesel? Spark plug s?.....🤔
god video LJ thankz
Thanks my friend!
did you change the oil filter for a new one right ?or you used the same? and you just change the gasket?
Yep, new oil filter & it comes with gasket already and then for the drain plug I reused everything. Technically it's recommended to get a new plug washer everytime, but I dont do that everytime just after so many oil changes. Hope thats what you're looking for!
@@LJsGarage Could you confirm what size the plug crush washer is? So I know to buy the correct size. Thank you!
Good job.
Thanks Rick!
I am not selling my bike and by the time i sell it , i give a **** if someone cares about the service checks.
Ur voice sounds really high.
I'm not sure if that's good or bad lol
My YODA!!
Haha
Excellent video, thank you!
Anytime! Ready to get back to riding soon!
