VW T5 / Mk 5 Golf Preventing loss of drive from Equal length driveshafts, replacing the stub axle

  • I'm checking for wear to prevent loss of drive from the driveshafts on the T5, luckily I've found the problem before being stuck at the side of the road. Mine had a very clean shaft and a lot of free-play in the driveshaft out of the gearbox, surprisingly common on Mk5 golfs, with equal length driveshafts or T5's

    Thanks chrispy… I’m stuck here in France ,lost drive on busiest roundabout in Rouen in Friday rush hour traffic…. Can hear drive shaft spinning and no drive at all …I think and hope it’s just the stub … found this video, well done perfect …. I’ll show this to the frenchies and see what happens kind regards the silver wolves

      What a chaotic place to have a drive fail, not the best vehicle to push 😬
      I have a feeling if the drive shaft hasn't been replaced recently there's a good chance it need that as well, both wear and the Shaft sometimes gets replaced as that's softer steal and gets accelerated wear from the stub axle also being worn
      Good luck 👍

    Great. Thanks Crispy. Fellow t5 sufferer here. 1.9 tdi transporter van.
    1.I lost all drive. A light rattle sound all that remained. Gearbox guy said he'd done a dozen of them and it's always the side with the longer half shaft plus shaft going to the wheel.
    2. Wish you could have shown more clearly the end of the stub axle which goes into the gearbox and how it connects.
    3. That support bearing which mounts onto the cast alloy piece which goes from rear of the engine to the rear engine mount - the mounting bolts need a female helicoil in the cast alloy. Cast alloy does not tolerate repeated dismantles with just a 8mm metric thread. VW should put helicoil in at the factory. I stripped the thread to prove it. All ....................... IMHO.

      Thanks Divocwax, agreed they are way too common fault but still continued use it, and in golfs as well! , they wear and just strip the teeth, then spin 🤕
      mine had a drive shaft replacement prior to me, but not the stub
      Feed back noted, space is tight to work and film, it's still a learning curve for me, I still hope the video helped you with the T5 journey

    I just replaced my stub on my T5 and oil seal while I was at it. It still loses 1.5 litres of fluid every couple of days. I don't understand. Great video though, good to see the stub end and shaft up close as it's hard to tell how far it needs to sit in there otherwise.

      Well I'm glad the video helped, but gearbox is loosing that much oil, it must be pouring out!
      There has to be a very wet patch on the box, may benefit from a full jet wash and a short drive to locate
      Good luck 🤞

    Great video , i have the same on my T5 , from the passenger side driveshaft , its still driving but knocking & loads of play

    • @CrispysProjects
      @CrispysProjects  3 роки тому +1

      I'm sure passenger side is just a bolted in flange on all boxes. They do have little play in the CV joints, could well be one of those, cleaning old grease out and refilling may help or might be worn out joint

    would you not expect fluid to come out when your remove the shaft - and having to top the oil level back up again ?

    • @CrispysProjects
      @CrispysProjects  5 місяців тому

      Great question, No you shouldn't get fluid come out. The full level on these boxes in below the output flange seal
      Hope that helps, but yes you always check your levels particularly if the vehicle is new to you or there is a leak
      Thanks for the comment 👍

    Hi Crispy ,did you lose any gearbox oil if so how much cheers ( have an 08 1.9tdi t5 and was told drive shaft bearing was gone so bought a new drive shaft and stub axle as you recommended,stub axle that is) thanks again really good videos

    • @CrispysProjects
      @CrispysProjects  3 роки тому

      Glad to hear it helped 👍No I didn't, two reasons 1) was jacked up just the one side, tilting the box 2) the oil level should be just below the level of the seal - thinking about it I might change my oil, no reason just because!
      I hope it helps others as well

    Thanks Crispy.
    I have the same issue well I hope it’s this anyway, my T5 has recently had DMF fitted before my ownership and is on 85k at present. I’ve noticed a annoying knock when pulling away at slow speed in most gears. Even in gear and when a little acceleration is applied I hear the clunk.
    Is it most common that the OS shaft and stub be replaced or shall I just change the stub ?
    Thanks for your help and I’ve been subscribed to your channel and hit notification bell.
    Keep up the good work

      Glad it helped Dean 👍
      it's worth checking even if its just for noticeable play without taking anything off (Right side jacked up)
      Since you didn't know the full history as I didn't could be few things, if shaft is worn replace both- the shaft 'goes' first being the softest, mounts and bushes also possibles things to look at , just finishing a video on the Corrado then will be doing wishbone bushes on the T5

    hi great videos did you grease gearbox end of the stub shaft before inserting ? cheers

    • @CrispysProjects
      @CrispysProjects  4 роки тому

      No the gearbox end doesn't need greasing, as it's internal to the box, getting lubrication from the gearbox oil, little bearing sealing paste/grease would be beneficial on the seal as that can help old seal's keep the thin oil in, good luck

      It's a real failure point, including high end mk5 golfs which I had, with a failure of shaft, and then soon a second shaft before doing the pair together!!

    Hey mate I've got an issue where I'll be coasting 30-50mph with my foot off the accelerator then as soon as I touch the gas I have a knocking/clunking sound from the front driver's side. Could that be the CV driveshaft or CV joints? (It doesn't make a sound when turning fortunately). Cheers, noticed you had MK5 golf in the video title, suspect I might be having the same issue as your transporter 🤟

    • @CrispysProjects
      @CrispysProjects  Рік тому +1

      If it's making noise in a straight line it could be the inner CV joint, if it's lost the grease for example, the inner stub axle if it's a mk5 with same setup as the T5 would be hard to hear more a physical check, that where I'd start
      Good luck 👍

    Thats not the same on a golf is it surely? It's like a plate that 6 or 7 bolts screw onto

    • @CrispysProjects
      @CrispysProjects  Рік тому

      Your correct the lower powered mk5's have a 6 trihex/spline bolts on the CVs, higher powered TDI & GTI's more on the pre facelift also have a equal length driveshafts, which also has the same spline / and similar extension that fails in the same way 🤔
      Again when that happens the shaft gets changed but not the stub!!

      @@leewalerzak your right inner don't go bad often, click changing load in straight line. Not much on those than bottom ball joints and the back wishbone bushes actually fall apart worth checking those 1st!
