Nice video. I use water as a weight. I can dump it late into a hike if I get injured or get tired. And, I can give some to a another person if they need some to drink. I live in south Texas where water is life.

I started rucking a few years ago. It is my primary mode of staying fit. I take my dogs, select a route which contains flats, gentle hills, tougher hills and consists of 2-3 miles which takes 1-1.5 hours. I usually carry 30lbs, I love it!

I used to be a marathon runner in my 20's weighing about 120lbs. Well after my last marathon I started weight lifting instead and got back up to 150lbs. Then when I hit my 30s I continued to lift weights and got up to 175lbs . Then my depression got really bad and I had to get on antidepressants which gave me really high food cravings and a low metabolism. Once I hit 200lbs I just stopped working out completely and then my weight kept going up. My heaviest was 232lbs....Then about a year ago I got a job that had me standing in one place for 8 hours a day and I lost 22 lbs very gradually . Over this past winter, I ran out of anti-depressant medication for 2 weeks ( I don't recommend ) and I lost 10lbs. It sucks that I put myself into a severely suicidal state and actually got rewarded for it by losing some weight. I made my decision a long time ago that Id rather be fat and happy than skinny and miserable. However, now that I have gotten back down to 200lbs I have started doing 4 mile walks. Yesterday and today I started rucking with 20lbs in a backpack. I'm hoping to get back to 175/bs and stay there for rest of my life.

Me and my friend started doing this we take about 15kg in our back packs started doing 5-8 miles then moved up to 10-12, our last walk we walked to the neighbouring town which turned out to be a 20 mile walk. I wouldn’t suggest doing this without training but by god did it give me the best high I’ve ever had. I got a natural feeling that just gave me this superhuman feeling. I think it’s more the accomplishment but it was worth every pain.

I started doing this last year before I knew it was an actual thing. I wanted to mimic the weight of the breathing pack I use at work and also burn a few more calories. I just use one of my son’s old school back packs and wrap various dumbbells up in towels to keep them from moving around and to add a bit of cushion. I walk on the treadmill at 2.8 mph on a slight incline for 1 hour. I also do it during a fast. Results are great as long as I don’t drink too many beers through the week.

    Hi Sam,
I was a runner for 30ish years. Recently my body sort of didn't want to do it anymore, I didn't know what to do. I started thinking of rucking, and today I did my first ruck with 20# in an old backpack and went for a mile I feel good. Wearing good supportive shoes is a must for this. Who knows after 63 years I have found something new.

1I bring empty backpack, heavy duty trash bag and empty ziploc gallon freezer bag. 2Get 50 lbs of sand for $5 from local building materials store. 3 Remove as much or as little sand as you want from main bag then and put that in freezer bag. 4 Put in to the trash bag what you are going to put in ruck. 5 Dump sand before flying home of course. Perfectly portable and cheap!

I started hiking in my local mountains as cross training to my running and also hike with my retired buddy. However, it was too easy and I was pushing my older hiker too hard. So, I pulled out my old backpack and filled it with large heavy bulky stuff(foldable tents/chairs/etc) and 6 liters of water = 45 lbs which is about 25-30% my bodyweight. With a real backpack the hips straps carry most of the weight, and it feels like you have a sofa on your back. Now, I can hike 5 hrs instead of 8 and get the same 4000 calorie burning. The goal like my distance running is to "use it all".

been doing this for 3-4 months, walking with around with 40lb atm, just building it up week by week, would like to get to a 100lb sometime this year, but we'll see, the problem I foresee is how to spread the weight properly and pad your bag out, otherwise you end up with a heavy weight directly dangling on the bag, so I find its best to pack it out with old rags and wrap the weights up and put them on another rag so its disperses the weight and that dosn't destroy your bag as fast.

I’m a 57 yr old female who had a massive stroke in 2013 & was told I would never walk again. Fast forward several years I started a whole food plant based vegan diet. I lost 77 lbs in 5 months & then decided to start a workout regiment. I do an hour & a half of cardio & weights everyday. I wanted to up my game & started rucking. I weigh 120 lbs & carry 40 lbs in my rucksack and ruck 1 hour a day. I’ve not lost anymore weight but I am considered a badass by all that know me - lol. Bottom line, if your looking to lose weight, you need to change your diet. Keto will kill you…you may lose a few lbs at first but will end up shortening your lifespan with all that fat. I am considered a miracle given my history & I owe that all to my diet. High carb low fat will give you the energy you need to live a long healthy life & rucking will make you look like a superstar!

That's a great workout actually carrying something in your hands. Even better than Rucking, I believe. I have been doing 30-40-50 lbs in my backpack. You know what in a sturdy backpack it still feels like a "comfy" sofa on your back or hips. 5-7 hrs. Not enough, I need more. Try this. Hold actual dumbells and go for a walk. That's a real killer. I don't mean a few hundred feet, but miles and hours. Also, you don't need to carry much, I'd say 33 or 25% of your max dumbell curl weight. Not enough to make your wrists cramp. Carry that for about 2 hrs or 6 miles. Your shoulders, traps and chest in general will start screaming by then. Actually, it feels like my whole body goes up about 10 or 20 degrees in temperature. Like a fever. I just want to drop the weight and relax.

They say that once you are comfortable with that you can move up to 15% of your total body weight. I read that regularly walking with weight more than 15% of your total body weight can actually harm the body. Does anyone know if that is true? Surely there must be a certain point that the weight we are carrying becomes so heavy that we are actually harming ourselves.

It was awesome and felt extra calories and heart rate increase then tried 30lbs and it really hurt my traps so going to get a good Rucksack. I've been walking our dog twice a day 1m+ so might as well burn an extra 30-50 calories per walk. I've lost 34lbs since Oct and pretty strong so not sure if I should spend a few hundred and do 60lb Rucks. Recently got Squat Max MD and its amazing for calves and lower legs many NFL and MLB teams use it. I find I burn a lot more calories just walking after working out hard and with weight will be more.

2.Does rucking make arched backs even more arched?

Focus on standing upright and not slouching while doing it and it engages your back quite a bit. Id recommend doing thoracic mobility exercises as well.

I'm going to start rucking, my question is:
Do I use the waist clip of the backpack, if so do I use it throughout the whole walk or at a certain time which is best?
    Thanks in advance

Does rucking build muscle? Is it like an extended farmers carry?

Started riding with 15lb and any Rick won't do. Strained my lower back because the backpack keeps the weight too low

Do you think doing walk at home with Leslie Sandstone and a weighted back pack would work?
I live in a desert walking around here with the natives (and dogs) is not a good idea. 😮

Yeah , I bought a titan vest and I wouldn’t walk through the neighborhood with it. Could be dangerous if you can’t get it off in an emergency situation. Plus people may think you’re carrying bombs or something. I just walk in my backyard with it

    • @JaredVeldheer68

Should work. Only issues will be support of the straps and how it fits against your back

I ruck for 2 hours in the dead of night but I can't use more than 20 pounds or else I develop tendon strain in my feet which takes a few weeks to heel which is difficult for someone like me who is exercise addicted.

Pretty much. But the benefits to your back will be a bit reduced. Not that much tho.

  • @ThisIsWilliamPhelps

Is wearing a weighted vest considered "Rucking"? I've been taking 5 mile walks with my wife but I had to purchase a 60lbs vest to feel a benefit. Is the posture improvement of a backpack the only difference?

I've been using a backpack that's just been lying around with a 25 lb plate with a towel and pillow to keep it in place and so the corner doesn't hit my back.
What do you wear for footwear? I'm torn my gym sneakers, work boots, and hiking boots. I'm just doing 30+ minutes around my neighborhood a few times during the weekend.

Hey there. Great info. I have a question. As you know due to the pandemic it is a little harder to go out. I have a treadmill in my house. I am sure that rucking outside is more beneficial but would you recommend rucking on a treadmill. My treadmill has only one incline level and it is manual. Which means that O would have to get off it in orderr to set the incline. So I would be greatful for some recommendations. Thank you very much. By the way I do some weight training and cardio regularly. Lets say I am an intermediate level. 💪

Maintaining proper posture is the most important.
You can build up weight or distance over time, don't do both at the same time.

I’m curious, what’s the difference between rucking with weight on the back and using a plate carrier with the weight up front? Thanks

    • @Longshot88
      @Longshot88 3 роки тому +2

Your plate carrier's weight is distributed across your front and back, while a heavy pack's weight will only be supported by your back. If you plan on doing things that require better balance like running, a vest would be better.

Question! I historically used my SOC pack to carry x2 20 pound plates, It's rather larger and has taken some wear and tear + weight distribution is a little off due to the size. I know Go Ruck is a super great brand! Do you have any recommendations on a second best pack? A bit more affordable? I've been trying to find UA-cam reviews on packs that would be specific to ruck plates and hold in place going up Hill and what not. I've tried using sturdier backpacks not necessarily intended for plates and they give out pretty easily. I was just looking for something that is maybe smaller in size enough to carry 2 plates+ water, any recommendations are appreciated!! Its overwhelming looking at options (beginner here) on Amazon, I don't know necessarily what to look for- so I wanted to consult a subject matter expert, Thank you 🤙

Cannae Pro Gear Legion 21L is perfect for rucking on a budget. I have a 45# plate I used with it for a GoRuck Tough event and passed with it. No rips or tears and no zipper failure. The bag is on sales for $65 right now!
