Does rucking build muscle? Is it like an extended farmers carry?

Tried it this morning with a 6 lb weight for a 3 mile, 1 hour walk. Wow, I am def out of shape! I bought a flat 10 lb weight, but I'm going to have to work my way up to that one!

I am a 72-yr-old. Runner, lifter, swimmer, biker and have just gotten into rucking and really love it! Just include your dogs, husband, children, grandchildren and go. I throw weight plates into my LLBean backpack and may upgrade at some point to a GoRuck pack.

common myth. Breaking a fast before or after work out does not make any difference for muscle hypertrophy or exercise benefits. If anything, working out after eating (permitting it's after 1 hr), and with carbs, teaches your muscles to utilize glucose more effectively especially if in Zone 2. More importantly, you are probably not burning as much fat as you are depleting glycogen in a fasted state. Exercise in general more likely burns fat because it is more likely to put you in a daily caloric deficit. Otherwise enjoyed the vid.

Do you think doing walk at home with Leslie Sandstone and a weighted back pack would work? I live in a desert walking around here with the natives (and dogs) is not a good idea. 😮

    • @stever507

Yeah , I bought a titan vest and I wouldn’t walk through the neighborhood with it. Could be dangerous if you can’t get it off in an emergency situation. Plus people may think you’re carrying bombs or something. I just walk in my backyard with it

Great video liked and subscribed. I just tried Rucking this week with 20lbs from my garage gym and regular backpack. It was awesome and felt extra calories and heart rate increase then tried 30lbs and it really hurt my traps so going to get a good Rucksack. I've been walking our dog twice a day 1m+ so might as well burn an extra 30-50 calories per walk. I've lost 34lbs since Oct and pretty strong so not sure if I should spend a few hundred and do 60lb Rucks. Recently got Squat Max MD and its amazing for calves and lower legs many NFL and MLB teams use it. I find I burn a lot more calories just walking after working out hard and with weight will be more.

@@JaredVeldheer68 Good to know got the GoRuck and a 45lb plate usually just do it walking our dog a mile+ easy extra 40 calories per walk. How much weight and miles per week do you Ruck? I'm almost at ideal bodyweight 10lbs more to go and want to use it as tool to maintain and also enjoy food again sometimes.

Nice video, Jared-- from a Cardinals fan of 30 years who enjoyed watching you work on Sundays (and who is also forcing himself to get out and hike some more in the New Year). Just did Sunset Trail with the gf this weekend with an extra 10 lbs. in my Camelbak. I definitely felt that weight, but also felt fantastic afterwards!

Just start out with a goal of a mile / mile and a half with a light weight (10lbs) a few times a week to start and build from there. Find some hilly routes. If you start too heavy, too fast and for too long a distance, you might injure yourself. When I was active duty military, rucking was always progressive.

been doing this for 3-4 months, walking with around with 40lb atm, just building it up week by week, would like to get to a 100lb sometime this year, but we'll see, the problem I foresee is how to spread the weight properly and pad your bag out, otherwise you end up with a heavy weight directly dangling on the bag, so I find its best to pack it out with old rags and wrap the weights up and put them on another rag so its disperses the weight and that dosn't destroy your bag as fast.
