    Sup! A) I appreciate you Andrew! And B) I know Atmos can seem wild and unnecessary but it’s fun and brings a new sense of feeling back to music. Please hit me with any questions or even concerns you might have! 🤘🏼

      How do i listen to reference material in my setup if i go atmos. There doesn’t seem to be a way without expending a lot of money on a seperate reciever and a controller with input switching. Seems too complicated without reason

      I noticed you mentioned the cranborne stuff for 500 series. You should check out the WesAudio stuff, they offer a similar thing, but also all of their gear is fully analogue, digitally recallable. I'm planning on building an Atmos rig soon and streamlining everything. Just worth a look I think!

    Great for movie/video sound tracks etc. For music as a mainstay, soon to be the way of the Dodo like most multitrack audio formats of the past IMO. Doesn't change for a second how interesting this all is along with how it gets the geek in me going, but not an investment I'm willing to make for the future. I got my hand full mixing down to 2 tracks as it is. Loved Jonathon's setup and personality none the less.

    As someone who mixes for film, it’s always seemed to make sense that atmos is just an extension of surround.
    I never realized so many people would have reservations who primarily mixed in the music industry alone. It is interesting seeing how integrated the Apple ecosystem is at the moment which is probably part of most people’s gripes as I’m guessing.
    That being said it will only become more and more accessible as time goes just as any new technology does.
    And like Jonathan says, why can we have both? I love the idea of atmos for music production, and I’ve never properly listened to a mix in a proper room.
    I’ve heard many many impactful stereo mixes in my life, but like it’s been said, I think that’s mostly because of the music itself not just the mix. So why can’t that influential aspect of song writing become a normal experience in atmos?
    Seems like most people view it as just randomly placing instruments everywhere and automating them around, when in reality it’s an opportunity to create a new space and sonic environment. There will be plenty of “bad” atmos mixes just as there are many “bad” stereo mixes…. But I digress

  • @donnydarko7624

    My perspective in regards to atmos music (btw I love atmos audio for film.)
    The the big reasons for my belief that it has no future are, 1. because when you listen to concerts, street performers, etc. you as the listener don't sit with all the musicians surrounding you, so it's completely unnatural. 2. Atmos home theater systems are not even an option for many people due to space requirements, not to mention financial means, and more people are are being stretched to their limits financially every day. 3. It's a solution to a problem that didn't exist. You'd think more people would be able to track this trend that seems to happen again and again within silicon valley, and I don't mean just in regards to the 3D music experience, it is a cycle. 4. Say the people who have the most invested in in atmos music, are able to see that it's highly unlikely that it's going to ever catch on. If those at the top keep pushing the narrative that it's the next big thing convincingly they can try and keep that idea alive long enough to hopefully recoup their investment while having shifted their debt risk to others, kind of like shorting a stock.

    So my biggest issue with all the atmos stuff is: take harry styles’ “as it was” as an example…. Spike stent did the stereo mix, great mix of course. Stems printed. Stems then sent by label to a completely diff person to do an atmos/spatial mix. These are 2 different mixes that sound totally diff and are done by 2 completely different mixers, one getting paid big $$ for their talent as a mixer, one getting paid some $ cause they have the ability to “mix atmos”. If youre listening on Apple Music, it automatically plays the atmos version whether or not youre using an atmos setup, as in listening to stereo (which is the atmos mix folded to stereo). THIS IS NOT THE SAME FIDELITY AT ALL if you turn off atmos and listen to the REAL stereo mix.
    That part to me is really screwed up. By default listening on Apple Music, youre hearing theoretically a bad version of the song and probably in no way what the artist and producers signed off on ha.

    • @santibanks
      @santibanks Рік тому +1

      The problem is an industry problem, not a problem with Atmos as a format. There is this whole scala of bad incentives which ultimately boil down to a bad sub-par Atmos mix.
      And in my opinion, Apple and Dolby are the primary drivers for this. Apple is offering Atmos in their music store, meaning there is a race to create content as fast as possible because well, you need Atmos content in order to put it in your store and have people hear it. So Atmos needs to be delivered but there are no budgets. Meaning its an afterthought and just a wack job.
      Apple screwed up by implementing their own version of interpretation of Atmos as strictly speaking, Apple is offering Spatial Audio which can use Atmos as its input.
      Simply put, the technology to accurately translate a mix to headphones is just not there yet. So Apple is always offering you a subpar experience because the technology is limited. Any mixer will tell you in private that what they hear coming out of their Apple headphones is nothing like what they hear on their discrete speaker setups. Hence they play it super safe as they have no idea how to deal with it because it is a moving target giving that Apple continues to tweak things on their end.

    This could be helpful to get people back to purchasing physical material. You can only do physical Atmos on a Blu-Ray,so if you can produce a music Blu-ray,you may get people to purchase it.The problem is getting customers to buy a Dolby Atmos setup. I have an 11.2 Onkyo and Klipsch setup in my family room,but most people aren't willing to spend the cash to do it properly.The Atmos soundbars sound terrible.Can you stream material in Atmos? • @robfulco4739
      @robfulco4739 Рік тому +2

      I don't think it's suppose to be affordable. Record companies have been losing money since more people are making music from home and releasing it on their own. This Atmos thing benefits the industry all the way around. Apple, and probably Spotify are only going to allow you to put your music on their platforms if they are Atmos files. That means you have to run out and pay big bucks (even if you find a cheaper way of doing it, YOU still have to spend money) which helps places like Sweetwater make more money, and the manufacturers make money. Since it is so expensive to invest in, I think the hope is that you will find that going to a corporate recording facility will be cheaper, and you will just give them a bunch of money to do your Atmos recording and mixing. I think Atmos is cool and an awesome listening option, but my opinion is, just like the Covid vaccine, if they have to force you to do it, it's not a good idea/product.

    listening to the Playing God mix on Jonathan's channel has won me over. Even over headphones there is so much more room in the mix than in the original song. People don't seem to get that you don't have to be listening on a 9.1 system to get the experience. Between that and the adoption rate for both consumers and manufactures I feel like atmos is here to stay.

    • @dustycooper
      @dustycooper Рік тому

      To me it sounds like there is more room in the Atmos mix because there is no bus compression / limiting going on, that's not a thing (yet) in Atmos. Also, the original stereo mix of Playing God has super wide panning on the acoustic guitars, which makes them sound super close. If people wouldn't use bus compression / limiting and would refrain from panning so extreme you would get a similar result as this Atmos mix.
      It might be easier getting there with an Atmos workflow though, not sure.

    Enjoying Dolby Atmos music with quality is expensive.
    Unlike stereo and equipment depending, Atmos music can only be appreciated at medium to high volumes. Too much background mechanical noise (RFI), and to think the cables that carry the signal to my height channels happen to be shielded as well. Can only assume the heightened noise floor (faint background signal noise) becomes more apparent cause the entry-level cables on my height channels have limited shielding. Hence, when the height channels are switched off (externally amplified poweramp), just going through just a five channel configuration (base-level). The noise floor comes back down to satisfactory levels, unlike the height channels, which only have limited shielding. The shielding on my base-level speaker cables are of superior quality.
    Unshielded cables often act as antennas for attracting RF, and the longer the cable, the better the antenna. Probably explains why when I used to disconnect my height and surround channels within 10 minutes, the unwanted faint background signal noise used to dissipate.
    Maybe I should've matched cables of the same quality? Yeah, so long as I don't mind paying at least an extra £500 for the height channel cables.
    Conclusion;
    Other than listening at medium to high volumes, listening to Dolby Atmos music with quality can be rather expensive.
    An avid music listener.

      Hey B from IGMaudio here! The entry level is getting more and more affordable. With a little bit of stretch you can get a descend setup for $2000 nowadays.
      Regarding to your question and issues on RFI: "Maybe I should've matched cables of the same quality? Yeah, so long as I don't mind paying at least an extra £500 for the height channel cables"
      The solution that comes to mind and which would compete strongly with "high-end cables" is to glue an openable ferrite sleeve from one end of your audio cables to the other, which would massively help your issue. If you still have rfi, wrap the cable around the ferrite sleeve until you can hear it. One or two wraps at most would be sufficient if necessary.
      All the best!
      Ben

      @IGMaudio thanks for your advice and trying to help. Unfortunately, the height cables are now inaccessible, but thanks all the same.

    That's certainly a nice setup, but what's the ROI?
    How many requests is he getting per year for ATMOS mixes?
    ATMOS was released in 2012 and as of 2022 has a less than 1% market in movie theaters given that the cost is high to convert theaters to ATMOS that market share isn't going to grow very fast if at all.
    As far as the home "theater" situation, marketing of "ATMOS" sound bars is growing but like surround sound true ATMOS is expensive and difficult to implement in a home environment and there isn't enough ATMOS entertainment material to justify the effort.
    To me personally, it just doesn't make sense to spend the huge amount of money required to implement ATMOS in a studio environment at this point in time.

    The bad news? Dolby Atmos is a dead parrot. The good news? There's going to be a lot of cheap monitors on eBay in a year or two. 😎

    Atmos is like VR. It’s kinda cool if you have the money but nobody really cares much about it, except Content Creators with Gear Store sponsorships and recording studios struggling from the home studio revolution. I’m not impressed as a consumer.

      Do you have an iPhone? You have Atmos. Do you have an Android device? You have Atmos. It's also available in various less expensive soundbar configurations and smart speakers. So, it's different than VR.

      It's for studios, cinemas, and enthusiasts with money to burn. It's a pro level setup and it's not meant to appeal to regular consumers. You can live your life just fine without giving a shit about atmos and it won't impact you. I personally don't care about it for home use but I appreciate anything that can bring better sound to the whole industry.

    I still don't feel music will make it as ATMOS....Apple can push all they want but the reality 99% of the market just won't bother with purchasing a ATMOS set up to listen to thier music.
    For the audiophiles out there sure maybe....but we're NOT the mass consumers.....and Binaural is OKAY-ISH....but I don't see labels paying top dollar for ATMOS Music mixes, cuz the consumers won't pay extra for it period.

    Until we know for sure atmos is seeing real mainstream adoption, not just apple forcing it upon the industry. When that dude sitting in the corner has atmos on his blackberry… then it will make sense to invest in one of these setups. Until then, why not just buy a pair of airpods and mix on headphones? If 90% of the userbase is listening on the same set of headphones, why not just mix for them on the same headphones? Especially since it’s so much more cost effective?
