Love those KISS PEZs at 6:56. Great video guys!
Thanks man!
This video is pure Gold. I am starting my Atmos Mixing journey from this year. So all this information is so helpful. Thanks Chris and Matt.
Glad it was helpful!
Great video! It answered some of my questions too. Yank you for sharing this Chris!
Glad it was helpful!
Love Matt Boudreau. What a treat having him on. Thx.
Ah thanks!
He's the best:-)
This is Dolby Atmos made easy for beginners, and its a very helpful vdieo! Thank you so much!
Ibeen waiting for this!! I can’t believe I didn’t see it sooner
Thanks for showing this Chris.🎧
My pleasure!
Awesome interview!
Thanks!
Great chat, answers a lot of questions.
Glad you enjoyed it
Thanks for another great video Chris. I am in the midst of converting my studio to Atmos. It is exciting, and listening to music in Atmos is amazing. I will be running everything from Cubase. Still lots to learn, but I am up to the challenge. I work with a bunch of great guys, so this will be a team sport. You are always welcome to stop by and listen:)
Cool stuff! Good luck with you rproject and thanks for the invite :-)
Super exciting! Good luck.
very insightful
What do you think about Dolby ATMOS Mixing? Do you think the consumer will go for it or not?
Let me know what your thoughts down below!
If I want to listening to atmos mix I have to invest to atmos kit. Even if I will to colaborate with atmos mixing engineer.
I think it’s more of a marketing gimmick than a better way to listen to music . I’m not sold on the musical part coz I’m yet to hear a decent atmos track on Dolby supported consumer products. But as a marketing ploy to get more clients and money I’m up for it lol
@@the.wavproject Not at all. I'm quite sure in about 10 years or less, no one will ever mix in stereo, but spacial. Not necessarily Atmos, but Ambisonics, Mach 1 etc... It is a total gamechanger. Much much better listening experience. If you haven't heard a good spatial audio track why would you even comment by the way?
Très intéressant !!!!
Définitivement
Thanks a lot Chirs. Totally agree with you about that atmos now has a point and its important to know about it, but at least me, I consider immersive audio more as the hipe of this times than a new way to hear music. Its only my point of view. Again thanks a lot Chris to touch this important concept.
Thanks for sharing your point of view :-)
Here is a real world success story. Client gave me a Logic mix. I broke it out to stems. Loaded in Cubase and “mastered” each track as opposed to a master bus. Turned on Cubase ATMOS and put the tracks in space. Automation allows movement of the tracks, and track groups all around the room. Used headphones. Rendering to Binaural. Used AWS media converter to make an iPhone audition. Gave back to the client. It blew his socks off. I got his deal, and his album, and his future albums, and all his friends. iTunes distributed with spatial support (which is just ATMOS). It is a game changer. Reach out if you need a partner on this.
Wicked Video!
Question: So Atmos automates channel levels and EQ frequencies to mimic tonal distance and tonal position?
So the three front speakers have to always be the same? Or you can mix them. Example Pmc 6-2 L+R and C could be PMC6? Or the 3 front have to be same PMC 6-2s in this example? Thanks in advance
Can CUBASE create tempo maps from a audio file and have your midi instruments follow the tempo?
Inspired by this interview, I listened to some Dolby Atmos music tracks on YT. At the moment, this is nothing that convinces me. Maybe there is still a learning curve for music being transferred into an Atmos acoustical environment. Or I didn't understand the concept correctly.
Personally, I don't need a guitar from back left and keyboards from above.
I cross-checked with some tracks from the Swiss band Yello and wasn't disappointed about Stereos capabilities to create depth and width.
BTW: Music technology is fully developed. I guess there are no quantum leaps to be expected. But the companies need to sell something. I guess, nobody will buy any sort 1176 clones or VST in 15 years anymore.
Just my 2 cents. 🤓
But who knows what's gonna happen the next years.
But thanks anyway, that was really something that got me reflecting.🙏🙏
Thanks for sharing your thoughts on this.Yes, we'll see where this is gonna go!
can I use a digital studio mixer, I have Yamaha tf3, can I use that to control the mix through the renderer?
Thanks for sharing. I have a Dolby Atmos 7.1.4 setup in my home studio. I have had trouble getting clients that are interested or understand Dolby Atmos mixes. I would like to know how to properly market to good clients.
Tell people that apple are starting to prioritise immersive mixes and are more likely to feature these mixes on the home Home Screen of Apple Music
On a normal cinematic 5.1 mix the center channel usually has the dialogue, the right and left front has sounds, music, directional effects, and the rear usually has effects and directional stuff, and then LFE. What is mixed where in atmos for music as well as cinematic?
It's totally different. It is object based, meaning you 'move' your object with your mouse (any sound source, let's say a car flying over your head in an action scene) in a 3D window (provided by the Atmos 'plugin'). You would automate that move so that it'll reproduce afterwards whenever you playback that part. Now your playback system, be it a 7.1.4 system or headphones or anything in between will try to play this 'movement' back as good as possible to allow for the 3D experience.
Thanks for the nice interview. Cinema aside, Dolby Atmos is a great, fantastic resource for music… music that, sadly, doesn't exist right now! Translating a ballad into Atmos, or anything else currently in production, seems futile or a trivial marketing strategy. On the other hand, Atmos could relaunch musical research applied to live performances, theater and opera. It could be the future of music, provided we have enough time to forget so much bad music and the courage to make new one.
Audio interface which one?
When did "mastering" become synonymous with "dynamics"? What happened to EQ, multiband compression, stereo imaging, phase cleanup, and - sometimes, dare I say it - level-matching tracks on an album? :)
How long does it take to do an Atmos Mix?
I wish Dolby would clarify the minimum speaker configuration. This is the second video I've seen stating that the minimum speaker configuration is 7.1.4. The Dolby site clearly states that the minimum is 5.1.4. For a guy in the process of planning a move to Atmos, this is very confusing.
The key factor to determine the success of this is and always will be consumer adoption.
If it doesn't get cheap enough for majority to adopt it then it's not going to last. In this industry, it's all about the money.
Imagine how many people don't even have a 2.1 setup for their home entertainment system.
A lot of systems currently just use the word "atmos" to sell products. Funny seeing it on soundbars with "dolby atmos".
İ am an amateur musician. İ always recorded mixed and mastered my songs but. Now i want to send them to a professional engineer like you are. İ wanna get information in what conditions you accept songs for mixing and mastering? Or do you do accept from distance at all? İ mean what type of technical recording leve and formats do you accept in order to mix and master a song ? And any detail about it i will appreciate. İ follow your channel for a long time as a cubase user.and i like it very much Thanks !
Hi Emre, thank you for your comment! You can contact Matt directly on his website: www.mattboudreau.com
really great vidéo .
1) which availalble audio track are really create for atmos in audio music world ? , i mean create for atmos and then perhaps down mix in stéréo ?
2) is there dolby atmos studio base on dante protocol ?
Atmos demand don't come from music creator ( it is different if your are a music creator for film) .
Dolby and sony and apple try to push this 3D technology to consummer but creator and listener have enough with
- best hi res audio track file
-lbest accoustic room
-best DSP DAC
-best speaker !!
no need 3D surround .....
surround with 4 high speaker need 12 channels so 12 speaker ( 1c+6s+4high + 1sub = 11+4 sub )
for dolby 7.1.4 is the reference and 4 sub is not usefull ( the 1 here could be 4 , 2 sub is the minimum since sound goes to all directions, PMC has to much bass not sub bass ).
Dolby Atmos uses a combination of channel-based and object-based mixing, while DTS: X is purely object-based. Dolby has certification , licence , recommanded hardware for their software !!
DTS:X uses an open-source Multi-Dimensional Audio (MDA) platform and doesn’t rely on a predefined soundsystem bed, making it adaptable to various speaker configurations.

5.1 surround was not having only the ability to put things in certain speakers. You could pan any sound anywhere as you like. You can make a helicopter fly around you and really boomy when it landed using the subwoofer. 5.1 was however kind of a flop.
Thanks Dennis. As I n mentioned, I never mixed in 5.1 so my knowledge of that format is limited. -Matt
@@WorkingClassAudio you missed nothing 😀
Doesn’t 5.1 not have height speakers/channels?
So I think logic comes with everything needed. I think Matt said you could download the Dolby render and it would work with logic. So i understand Matt is prob not using logic. So Do you know Chris Logic comes with everything needed to work in binaural with headphones. Thanks for posting this. I keep trying to learn this ATMOS. I think the only way i will understand it will be to take the leap and set up my room. Im Broke so need i say more!!! lol.. But I do think it is around to stay unlike quad. Good point to partner with someone that has a room. That will be the tricky part! Finding someone that will not splat their foot print all over the mix. I think it's like a mastering mind set less is more... Thanks again.
I think you are correct. I do think Logic comes with what you need. I failed to mention that. -Matt
@@WorkingClassAudio Thanks Man Great Video.. Wish you where in IL would love to check it out... Stay Safe
So what is the price for the speakes alone? + Room treatment, decoder and building cost? Yea... I'm stuck to stereo mixing unless I win a lottery... cu
That all depends on which speaker you use. Kali Audio can be a "more affordable" option. I assume we're looking at a 10-15k investment minimum. I'm still in stereo, and I don't consider myselk being "stuck" in stereo.
I assume you already have the room treatment from your stereo setup. I didn't add anything new to my treatment. Lokk into selling gear you do not use anymore to pay for it. That's how I paid for it.

After 3 min I knew enough. This is how you always should have mixed. I tell you in 1 sentence : mixing music is listening in 3D; horizontal = Panning... vertical = FREQUENCY(Eq) and depth = Volume(FADER). If you mix using these 3 things you will hear exactly the same on all this 20.1 system of your friend. Mixing music isn't rocketscience.
Yes, I agree with listening in 3D when Mixing, but Atmos mixing is not at all like stereo mixing, it's actually done after the Stereo Mix is done...So NO, not the same result as a stereo mix...not even the same amount of speakers...You're comparing apples with oranges ...You should've watched more than 3 mins, more rocket science that you might think ;-)
Why do you have no line of sight on the centre? Good video though..
Did I miss something here? He has 12 speakers, and an 8-channel amp... how does that work?
@macronencer The L, C, R and sub are powered. The surrounds are passive therefore they an amp
i think it better to do the ATOMS mx first and then render it to stereo mix after that it sounds better like that
You mix in Atmos and experimented both? If so, let me know why you think it sounds better mixing in Atmos first.
@@mixdownonline cause most mixers who mix in 2.0 thy all looking for loudness and the result doesn't translates great to ATOMS cause thy consumed the head room looking for loudness, but mixings in atoms is about space movement and clarity (don't forget the -18db rule )so it dos translate vey well into 2.0 by default , I've always said mix low master high but that doesn't work anymore for ATMOS, there are other effects and factors play a role in that but the most important is the head room.
@@adelismail9321 Are you an Atmos Mixer?
I personally feel the opposite… if you mix in atmos first you dont need to carve certaine frequencies on some tracks because they dont spatially overlap but once the atmos compile all the tracks into stereo (which is Why there is a -18db rules as once all folded back to stereo it will get overall louder), then many tracks will overlap once in stereo while not having being mixed to fit together in the same space in stereo.
@@chromatiku that is not what I'm saying i only said to export your finial stereo mx track after Atoms / you still have to do what you need to do before when exporting stereo stms / just try it export one before after you done mixing in 2.1 and then one after 7.1.4 to 2.1 and see you can tell the witch is better
its free with cubase
Pete Townsend got a hair transplant and an Atmos system. WHO would have thought.
You can actually do it much cheaper and easier than this. Logic Pro has Atmos natively built in, an interface and an adat extension, sonarworks multichannel and extra speakers of whatever model you already use for mains. Starting at around $2000. That's the price of a decent DJ controller for an entire Atmos Studio.
iK Multimedia presented a cheap ATMOS home studio setup at NAMM this year. It's also fully integrated in Cubase, Pro 12. Keep an eye on my next video ;-)
People keep saying this is going to grow. I just do not see the masses popping for an atmos system. It just sort of feels like a gimmick right now. I do not know anyone who has an atmos system. In any form.
You're right in a way, however, headphones like the Apple earpods are immersive, and Apple is pushing this technology very hard, so I expect to see more immersive (Atmos) type of headphones in the near future..that will be the market IMO...but if that will work and become the new music format, that I don't know, it can go either way
Question: Where on the Dolby site can the specifications, Matt refers to, be found?
Request: When you give measurements, ALWAYS give them in BOTH imperial and metric. Believe it or not, the vast majority of the worlds populations use the METRIC system and you have lots of international viewers, that are left out when measurements are only given in imperial! You can, just as well, use bushels (which actually is imperial)!
Matt did answer a lot of questions, but neglects a very important one that I've failed to get an answer to. Despite asking very knowledgeable people! The channel discrepancy between the minimum channel configuration (7.1.4) and the channel configuration of the bed (7.1.2) in the renderer. 7.1.4 ≠ 7.1.2. The missing 2 channels are the rear hight channels. How does Matt deals with the missing channels? Does he just ignore them? Why bother mixing with 4 height channels when 2 of them are just discarded, by the renderer?
The good news is that investing in Cubase Pro/Nuendo is a great money saver. (If you use powered speakers) you only need to buy the speakers and an interface (or expander) that gives you a minimum of 12 outputs. No need for any expensive monitor controller or extra software! It's all there in Cubase Pro's and Nuendo's ControlRoom feature. Just add a (disconnected) 7.1.4 Output bus and a 7.1.4 (connected) mixbus in the ControlRoom. I'm sure Chris has a video showing how.
Actually, there no need to invest a penny if you mix, using binaural audio!
And away you go, Dolby Atmos mixing to your hearts content.

Sven the Renderer contains a 7.1.2 bed as well as objects that access the .4 of the height channels in a 7.1.4 situation. The rear height channels are not left out. Not everyone mixes into the bed to be honest. It's a holdover from older surround mixing. Many people I know mix using objects only.

Sure you could do that but the issue is tuning the room. The monitor controllers have built in room eq which Dolby uses to tune the room to the Dolby curve as well as delay settings perchannel so that the alignment of the speakers phase is spot on. I know it's pricey to do this but there are only so many corners I would cut to reduce the cost. Also, only mixing in headphones is not advised. You can do it but your mixes may not come out as you like when they hit systems on speakers. Speakers for the consumer (beyond soundbars) are coming.

I get it and sure that's frustrating, but that's what Google is for. LOL :-) I deal in imperial on a day to day basis so speaking in metric is like another language.
@@WorkingClassAudio That doesn't answer the question why the rederer requires a 7.1.4 mix input, when it only has a 7.1.2 bed!
What music consumer demographic and use case is this for? Only a subset of audiophiles that no producer/artist/marketer would ever aim for would have the listening environment. Why bother? Mix/master for ear-buds - the thing consumers are actually using. Sorry if I come across as overly abrasive...
I have exactly the same thoughts.
Also, atmos for movies is great, but for music i prefer stereo or 2.1. And yes, i have a proper atmos installation in my living room because i really like movies 😁
Thanks for sharing your thoughts :-)
@@mixdownonline All the same, it's great how complete Cubase Pro is nowadays :) No need for melodyne, Isotope RX... shall I go on!?
Tell me one consumer you know who will buy a Dolby Atmos setup? I don't know one. Everyone is listening to headphones and justifying a full set dolby setup is great and also for folding back to binaural but at the end of the day it's never gonna happen. Didn't happen for 5.1. Dolby will remain for two platforms - Binaural and your local cinema.
Spatial audio is possible with headphones.

Learn to mix in STEREO FIRST..................QUAD and Doly surround didn"t succed for home studios...........decades ago
The industry wasn't pushing Quad and surround as much as they push Atmos now. We'll see what will happen. If it ends up not being convenient for the music consumer, it will stay as an option only. To be continued...
