Your set up is actually quite a bit bigger than the one I built and photographed for James Cameron's "Aliens" back in 1986. We worked out of Peerless Camera Company (hence no personal credit on the film) and their studio was tiny. Very nice to see such old techniques being used today. We used flash bulbs in a cloud tank on a job for the BBC series The Planets (1999 - not the recent Brian Cox one) for lightning in the atmosphere of Jupiter - it worked a treat, they even work under water! Keep up the good work chaps, absolutely brilliant. And you're so young!

If nothing else, this channel does what all great practical FX does - inspires the hell out of you and gets your creative juices flowing. The fact it's informative and fun to watch is one hell of a cherry on top.

I was about to say the LED panel lights looked a bit harsh, but then adding the caustic lighting--the God rays--in post totally sold the shot! I really appreciated everything about this episode! Thought the old-school lamps for lightning was brilliant along with the fireworks timer. Super fun! ( I have some clouds hanging in my living room made of paper lanterns and polyfill.)

I’ve used water tanks before, for rolling moving clouds, best to use Jeyes fluid, and or coloured ink, I believe the rolling clouds in Flash Gordon at the beginning used this teqnique.

This reminds me of the time I used to make clouds for McDonald's commercials for Mac the Knife. We welded 1/4" pencil rods into different shapes and covered them with the same material and suspended them from the catwalks in the studios with steel cables. I was referred to as the "Cloud Dude" Awesome fun to do!

Pure entertainment watching you guys, both in front and behind the camera. So much fun, experimentation and cool, old-school techniques that really is the fundamentals of movie-magic. Keep up the great work guys, a real honour to have worked with you and we cannot wait to start the next project, with some cool, in-camera effects.

Very nice work. Those LEDs really sold the lightning strikes.

Only just discovered your channel……always nice to see channels dedicated to practical effects. As time goes on, just like vinyl, I think there may just be a huge resurgence in these techniques. Computer technology makes incredible visual available to all of us….but sitting at a computer all day just isn’t as much fun!

So many little creative gems in this, guys. Personally loving the thoroughness - no secret details held back in the process. Loved seeing the lightbox logo in the clouds too. Keep em coming, guys!

Some many '80s movies used that polyfiil stuff for clouds: Explorers / Aliens / Buckaroo Banzai / Gilliam's Brazil also used smoke to create real light rays in camera!
