- Inspired by Peter Kuran's work in creating the title for 'The Thing' in 1982, Tommy and JP show you how to create this gorgeous title effect for yourself.
Don't forget your respirators!

Thanks so much for all the lovely comments and support! If you have any other classic effects you'd like us to recreate let us know!
great job man! I have a feeling this channel is going to blow up one day!
I’d love to see you guys recreate the terrifying intro to 80s CBBC programme Chocky ua-cam.com/video/e3ztIDFU2P8/v-deo.html
Old school 3D logos like the 1980s HBO intro!
What a great channel. I might as well suggest.
Could you replicate Back to the Future 2's flying cars, as it was in '89?
I know the really deep details of how they did it but I really wanna see the process in action.
Recreate the "Hell Sky" effect as seen in Ghostbusters and Childs Play. From memory the FX crew would put dye and flour into water and film it in slow motion then superimpose it on to the sky of the shot?
Great video guys!
Hi there! I actually did this effect for "The Thing" back in 1982. I used a large fish tank to contain the smoke, instead of filling the room full of smoke (and chasing everyone out of the building). I did use garbage bag plastic, but I stretched it over a frame and positioned it with a c-stand. As you can see, the fire could get out of control and you don't want to attach it to a flat or something that could catch fire. Also, I remember using a 1K light for the source. I made the title with a cel and black paint and attached it to the back of the fish tank. -Pete Kuran
Mr Kuran!...so honoured to have you with us and comment on our video. Yes, we went about things in a fairly dubious way (before we invested in a Fishtank etc) but we did ensure that enough fire extinguishers were standing by! We are huge fans of your work and it is safe to say that you are one of a select few who have inspired us to create our UA-cam channel and celebrate some great practical effects, as well as hopefully inspire newer filmmakers to look at practical and in-camera solutions for their projects. Best wishes!
Hello Mr. Kuran. I love the effect of the title burning onto the screen. I was thinking of doing the same thing for the symbol of human transmutation from Fullmetal Alchemist, except using red lighting.
Are you actually fucking kidding me. atomcentral, one of the powerhouses of restored nuclear test footage on UA-cam, also did this effect on The Thing. What a small world.
I just saw your interview "I gave them a price that I thought would be too high... Yeah I was quarter of the price (of Cameron)" that made me laugh. Thank you so much for your art!
🔥🔥🔥it is an actually blessing to know you still well and alive to part of this. My favorite film at all time
This is my new favorite channel!!!!
You sent me here.
Warning for everyone else out there: When burning plastics (or basically anything other than wood), wear a respirator!
hmmm those healthy burning wood fumes. its a nature product cant be bad. gonna light another log in my room.
@@gg-qj3gc Personally I like the smell of Oleander and Mexican Elders. They're so good that afterwords I feel as though I had a near-death experience. Quite exquisite.
This looks so much more satisfying to build than do it using CGI
Oh yes, the practical approach is extremely rewarding!
i'd agree that second take was perfect. right up through the middle and then reveal the full word.
Thanks! Yeah we knew straight away when we saw it that it was a good take!
This was just brilliant and helpfull. Need more tutorials from you guys for an aspiring filmmaker like me.
Thanks Anosh! And don't worry, there's plenty more where that came from :D
This was cool!
cool as always heh
you're cool too, just here to remind you :)
That's awesome dudes!!
Thanks guys, glad you liked it!
The time it takes to do it right will always be worth it! A classic done right here. Love it!
Thanks so much! We're super happy with how it turned out!
your character has an uncanny familiarity with so many actors I love it's very comforting
Benedict Cumberbatch and Simon Pegg morphed into one
I honestly love the second one, because the fire races up so quickly to reveal the “The” before the rest of it. Very cinematic.
I've still got a rad scar on my finger form a burning wiz zipper when I was a kid. Ahhhh the memories. awesome vid guys.
Wow. I just discovered your channel and am blown away. About to binge EVERYTHING.
Enjoy your binging session Adam! Plenty more content like it to come! Glad to have you onboard for the ride!
Already one of my favorite youtube channels
Too kind!
Having read that Art of the TItle article I've always wanted to give it a go myself. Nice to see someone actually do it.
It doesn't get much better than this!! TEN ON TEN!
Great stuff. Can't wait to see what you produce in future.
And as you asked for practical effect requests - the AT-ST walker head being crushed by logs (released by the Ewoks) from Return of the Jedi. If memory serves they metal coated the plastic model, used acid to eat away the plastic core leaving a perfect metal shell, then hit it with 2 model logs filled with lead. It crushed perfectly.
Wow! I recall that being a tricky one to achieve. But we love a challenge! Thanks for the suggestion!
What a great idea for a series. I see lots of movie shows talk about stuff like this, but its much more interesting to see people actually show you how its done.
Interesting to note that Carpenter's intro is itself a recreation of the titlecard to Howard Hawks' original The Thing from Another World, which appears to me to be a time lapse of melting wax maybe
That’s what I was about to state.
I had never even heard of your channel but seeing how you guys are dedicated to practical effects earned you a new subscriber. So many modern film tutorial channels are all about CGI now. It's great to see likeminded filmmakers dedicated to the art of practical.
I have watched one minute of this video and I have determined that this is the best channel on UA-cam.
Well, that is quite the compliment Alex, thank you! Is there anything, in particular, you want us to recreate in the future?
This is the most underrated channel
Nice work team. Really enjoyed the episode and the final result was excellent. More!!!!
Thanks Trevor!
Great job guys, was nice to see a homage to Carpenters nod to the original opening from the 1951 move The Thing From Another Word
That is fantastic guys , decided to do the same for my Chanel logo , and just found this vid , very helpful!
That's brilliant Nathan, glad our videos have helped! Make sure to check out our 'Volumetric Logos' video for more examples of how to create logos like this
You should definitely attempt to recreate the stormy clouds seen in The NeverEnding Story. I think they used different types of dye and grease paints in a fish tank.
Yes! We've got a pretty big water tank and have begun experimenting :D
Amazing effort! Fascinating and entertaining to watch. Keep it up, InCamera!
dudes this is awesome, cant wait to see more of what you guys have to offer
Thank you so much for this channel! Keep the videos coming please. Practical effects FTY!
Amazing! Love it guys. Can't wait for more.
This washed ashore on my TV feed due to the algorithm...I LOVE THIS!! When I was a kid I watched the Discovery Channel show "Movie Magic" religiously...this is like, the spiritual successor to it. YAAAY!
well thanks to the algorithm for bringing you to us!
I have wanted to see this for years. Great channel! Subscribed.
Already one of my fav channel. Need more of special effects tutorial. It feelt like watching mythbusters back in the days but here we can recreate the effect :)
Great job guys! Thank you for doing this. Hope you continue with this videos
Back lit graphics (rediscovered today digitally with the Stranger Things look) was how I made money as a college student in the mid-80's. Instead of vinyl stickers, you'd get a high resolution Kodalith negative film made from your black and white artwork, which was clear in the white area, solid black in the dark. Far nicer (more dense) than the digital transparencies you get today. For smoke effects we'd use a large aquarium between the camera and graphic, filled with smoke. I remember doing a "Bonanza" style burn through on some artwork for a local car dealership using very similar techniques!
This is beautiful work! You guys deserve so much more attention and appreciation. Subscribed!
I thought I was the only one who tried this and upload it. VERY awesome! I subbed
It's so simple yet so memorable and effective
Really enjoyed this! Looking forward to future episodes
Instructive, but also good fun. Very watchable!
That was really well done. The Thing is one of my favourite films and that opening sequence is legendary - you did a great job re-creating it :-)
Great video, loved it!! 😊
Thanks for the support Bronte 😀
Nice! I wish I still had my old 1986 VHS TV premier recording, that had it as the ad buffers for every break.
This technique is still being used.
The Windows 10 Hero logo was basically a painted glass that they shot some light through.
UA-cam has the behind-the-scenes video of how they made the logo titled "Windows 10 Hero Desktop Image - Behind the Scenes."
Check it out!
Nice! We've got another episode coming up where we show how this effect can be used more broadly :)
@@InCameraTV I can't wait.
I waited for this first episode and I'm not disappointed. I already knew this effect, but it's always cool to see someone applying the technique. I can't wait for the next one because I'm work on a Science fiction/Horror short for Halloween and I need inspiration.
That's great to hear Loki, and best of luck with your short film!
@@InCameraTV I think the hardest part will be shooting the spaceship in space TT
Love your videos. The ending where Tommy comes out puffing smoke is hilarious
haha thanks John, glad you enjoyed it!
So glad I subscribed, this was great, excited for the other episodes!
Thank you, Martin, really great to hear. Let us know if there is anything, in particular, you'd like us to make an episode about.
Accidentally came across this when I was revisiting the subject of this and you guys nailed it!)) my favorite horror film.
This is amazing. I have a short film I shot last year and I wanted to do this for the intro. At the time I couldn’t find a video explaining it well. Randomly decided to check today and found this video. So stoked. Thanks!
Oh brilliant, I hope the intro turned out well for you! Glad our tutorial could help!
Really wonderful work, and we're looking forward to seeing the planet effect!
Excellent! I would have guessed Carpenter's crew used nitrated paper or something similar, but your version looks great.
This blew me away. I have to watch all of your videos. I need more.
Wow, thanks Timmy! Glad you're loving the channel
Excellent work guys, really interesting and fun to watch, we look forward to seeing more from the team. The Thing is one of our all-time favourite horrors too.
Just found this channel. HUGE SUPPORTER so far. Easily becomes one of my favorite UA-camrs! Would love to see items used in the description with future videos
Thanks Zach! Yes we will start including the kit and stuff we used in the descriptions. Keep an eye out as we'll no doubt be updating the descriptions soon :)
Amazing! Really interesting and fun to watch.
Thanks Nagea!
Wonderful! 👏
This is so satisfying to me. I tried to do this about 20 years ago when I first heard this is how they did it. I was using a SD DV camera and it completely didn't work.
~Trav
This was fantastic. Favorite new channel! Can’t wait to see what else you come up with!
Thanks dud! Glad to have you onboard and that you're loving the channel! Make sure to check out our other videos!
Awesome. Interesting looking stuff with the planets.
Great and insightful show, can't wait for more!
Thanks very much, Noah! Do let us know if there is anything, in particular, you want us to demonstrate in a future episode.
This is freakin awesome dudes! I'm definitely gonna have to check out more of your stuff!!
That was amazing, well done. 🔥⬛️
AWESOMMEEEE!! I’m excited for more!
Thanks Simon!
Great to see old style effects being done even if just for nostalgia - I had a longtime subscription seeing this kind of stuff in Cinefex but let it lapse in the 1990s when CGI started to take over.
Amazing job! This is one of my favorite movies of all time and also one of my favorite title sequences ever. BTW I love your Japanese GITS shirt. I have a Japanese bootleg The Thing shirt :D
Epic work!
This is brilliant! I love it. I think the most complimentary I can be is to say I have been a CG visual effects artist for nearly 30 years... and this channel and what you have all done is FANTASTIC. I love practical VFX, and now that we can augment them with computers, it truly is the best of both worlds. Since you asked for suggestions... How about the Raiders of the Lost Ark face melting of Toht from the climax of the film?
One of my favourite films and this was just brilliant to watch the techniques that go into these opening titles. We have to do something funky on the next film ;-)
Really awesome channel, I'm excited to see more! Keep it up!
Thanks for the support Zach, do let us know if there is anything in particular you'd like to see.
Bring practical effects back!!! Love this kind of stuff. Thanks for sharing just found you
Pratical effects are great, with hard work you can make something look better than CGI.
Brilliant!
Do more 80s and 70s titles! Id like to see them
It's so cool to see the title in HD!
Impressive! Most impressive!
Brilliant! Loved it guys.
Thanks Paul! Massive relief just to get the first one up and out there. Already looking forward to showing everyone more - the support and positive comments so far have been genuinely humbling. Very glad to be here. (P)
Saw you guys on Reddit, this is my new favorite thing ever.
Well thanks, Joey! Welcome!
Iv only watched a few minutes of this video and YOU sir have earned my subscription!!! :)
That turned out looking so sick!! Fantastic job!
Brilliant, glad you liked it!

Wow thank you so much, glad you're loving the channel!
This was so satisfying to watch!
Thank you! Glad you liked it
I remember on the making of DVD for the 1982 film the guy who did this said that he had to do it many times and one-time the only letters that showed up were NG (No Good)
just pause at 11:11 and read the last sentence.
Great stuff, love it!
Thanks so much for the support!
great job, guys!
Awesome 👏
Just brilliant guys !!
Thank you Dave!
Love it!
So awesome! Saw your post on reddit! Really looking forward to more videos!!
Bloody hell, this is top quality content, subbed!
