I love everything about Ripley 8's characterization in the movie. All the little details included that says she's a hybrid. Sure there's the extra strength and agility, but then her vest that just happens to resemble the chest and shoulders of the Xenomorphs. to her swimming the way the aliens do in the underwater sequence. And then there's her attitude. Everyone else is crouched and creeping warilly, and she's just striding through confidantly. Just an entirely "I'm so done with this" approach to a station now crawling with xenomorphs.

One fun fact that you missed is that Sigourney Weaver actually made that reverse basketball shot for real. The look of shock on Ron Pearlman's face was 100% real and they couldn't hold the shot longer because he basically went from shock to "man, that was awesome".
I love the Alien franchise and originally, I thought this was a weird and quirky Alien movie. It wasn't my favorite. Over time it has grown on me and, as with most of the Alien movies, I have a preference toward the Director's Cut or extended cut in this instance.

I remember Sigourney Weaver talking about this fact when she went on her promotional late night talk show tour. The plan was originally to have it only look like sh3 made the shot and she did do several takes beforehand. But the take that wound up in the movie, she just happened to sink perfectly. Because the ball did go out of frame slightly she wanted to make sure everyone knew she made the shot herself and get the props she rightly deserved.

All four movies are distinct in tone and style. 'Alien' is a tense monster/haunted house movie set in space, and is a masterpiece of science fiction horror. 'Aliens' is more of an big budget action movie, but it just didn't feel as claustrophobic to me as 'Alien' did. 'Alien 3' definitely had it's own vibe, feeling more like a character study, especially when viewing the extended cut. It is dark and violent, but I don't think that it gets the credit it deserves. 'Alien Resurrection' is just a flat out popcorn horror movie, and there is nothing wrong with that. The action is taught, the characters are great, if not a little over the top, and it is visually appealing. The end result is four different, but worthwhile movies that you can pick from depending on your mood. Honestly, I grab 'Alien Resurrection' fairly often because it is just so damn fun!

The PS1 Alien Resurrection game is significant because it created the dual stick (pitch, turn on one stick, forward/back/strafe on the other), shoulder button triggers, first person controls that most console gamers are now familiar with but at the time it was often criticized for this control scheme.

"Steven Garrett of GameSpot criticised the then-uncommon dual analogue stick control scheme, describing the game as "almost unplayably difficult to control and unreasonably hard to enjoy".[13] Despite this, the control scheme would soon become standard for first-person shooters on consoles.[1] GamePro said that the game was "a fine first-person shooter, but unless you're a big fan of the films, there are even better options (Medal of Honor, Quake II) out there."[18][c]"

Alien 1, 2 and 3 are epic movies. Each follow up the ladder and changes its tone to be something special on its own. Alien 1 is a lone survivor story. Alien 2 is an action masterpiece and Alien 3 the aftermath of both. Here Ripley is tired of the Xenomorph race and the fight for survival and welcomes the end after losing everything.

He looked the host in the eye and said "They paid me 4 million dollars to shoot The Bees and that 2 months of work bought my family a home in Beverly Hills" The footnote to that, is that Caine came from humble beginnings in London, his father a dock worker, his mum a cleaner. No one in his circumstances would look a gift horse in the mouth.

Thanks for showing the deleted scene on Earth as it explains why Ron's character said it was a 'Shit-hole' and why no-one was trying to stop the ship colliding with the planet and thus nuking a large part of it thus killing millions. Talking of nuking, i guess that's why they didn't look to obtain aliens there as they should've been wiped-out with the power-plant's destruction (or did look finding nothing or what they did find was no good).

Yeah, downer ending, but it made total sense. Aside from the imminent death anyway, Ripley realized that her and the aliens would always be tied together, and she literally had nothing left to lose. Plus she could have never let the company have one, especially after all they had taken from her. (And of course protecting mankind, but that's just the rational part of her reasoning)

BONUS FACT: And I guarantee that Minty did not include it as most of us fans already know this one...
CGI was going to be used for the scene in which Ripley throws teh Basketball directly into the net - But the Shocked and Amused faces you see on screen are GENUINE as when they went to film the scene - Sigourney Weaver threw the ball over her shoulder and IT WENT STRAIGHT IN!!!! So instead of CGI, They just used that shot and said STUFF IT!
I do prefer Resurrection to Alien 3... While it does fail on many points - It was a genuinely exciting movie overall - Popcorn fodder for sure, but it did it well!
No Alien Movie can ever compare to the HORROR of the first... Or the All out action of the second... That simple - You have to take them as they come and realise that we can never recapture the magic that was the first two... So as long as they do entertain, They are doing the job! And for what its worth - Aline 3 and Ressurection BOTH ENTERTAINED ME!
Now if I can just invent that Mind Eraser from MiB and REMOVE the Memory of the AvP Series... I will be happy! (Maybe I should erase the Prequels too? I still think Dark Horse did a better job with the Alien Mythos... Until they also went for the Space Jockey creating them... The idea they were UNNATURAL but HAD PREDATORS was a great idea to me!!!)

To answer your question about why they didn't just go to one of the previous planets from the franchise to get more aliens.. It's the same planet in the first two movies. In both cases the aliens come from eggs found inside the crashed mystery ship which is not too far from the new colony in the second movie. Since that colony gets nuked at the end of that movie (theoretically taking the mystery ship with it?) the source of aliens from the first two movies is gone. Then in the third movie, the aliens were from eggs that came with the queen who secretly escaped from colony nuking. By then end of that one, both aliens are killed. So by the time of Alien Resurrections, the known sources of aliens at that point where all destroyed.

Resurrection is probably the Alien movie I like the least. I enjoyed the AVP movies for the most part. My only complaint was how easily the Predators were dispatched and to a degree they seemed out of character. AVPR was ruthless. A true horror type movie. Prometheus was a huge bait and switch. I liked the movie for the most part, but felt cheated. Alien Covenant was an attempt to create a new Ripley and failed. Which is likely what Shaw was supposed to be in Prometheus, but leaning toward Noomi Rapace not wanting to come back for the sequel and to be honest. After seeing Alien Covenant, can't see as I blame her.

I liked this movie the first time I saw it, but the more I saw it and the more I analysed it the less I liked it. It had such promise, a fresh setting and a fresh start. Sigourney Weaver looked FANTASTIC and Ripley's hybrid nature refreshed her character too. There were some great looking shots of the aliens themselves but the Newborn was an abomination. Different types of Alien are interesting, but this was too much of a departure, in the same way that Prometheus has ruined them. I like that in the same way that alien genes had polluted Ripley, Ripley had polluted the alien back, forever linking them. I liked Alien 3, and although there were some great ideas and valid arguments, I think the presence of Michael Biehn's character would have taken the reigns from Ripley. For me, this would have been a mistake, the same goes here for making Newt the new lead. Raymond Cruz is in this film which means it still gets a thumbs up. Legend.

The android was originally Ripley. This movie copied the novel but changed a lot (I can't remember the name, I think it was Earth Hive)
The original story was far better as it made more sense and was ironic when you remember how Ripley felt about androids and one day discovered she was one.
At the end of the second movie when Ripley went into cryostasis, her mind and thoughts were copied by Weyland-Yutani and transmitted to Earth while she was asleep.
Earth became a wasteland with hives all over, so they built an android Ripley and uploaded the copy of her mind.

I always felt that Alien was a good stand alone entry, while the others really relied upon the previous entry. #3 had felt more like it was trying too hard to attempt to capture that horror vibe of the original, but when you take the 4 movies in one sitting, 3 really adds a lot of depth to Ripley and shows how she went from lone survivor to protector of Newt/xeno killer/xeno expert to the martyr who knows what needs to be done to end the threat. Those three stages of character development lead to the death of the real Ripley, which enhances what a complex character Ripley 8 is, having the memories and personality of the original Ripley merged with the cold, animalistic brutality of the Xenos.
And until seeing this video, I always thought that 3 was just a set up for 4, that it was always the intention of the series to go that way. Considering the differences between writers and directors and such, I find it to be amazing that the series really meshes well together and is a coherent story. Heck, there are movie series out there that are written and directed by the same people throughout the entire series that dont work as well as this series does (cough cough, matrix cough).

1:58 no?! As we have only been to 2 planets, Alien and Aliens are both the same world, WY Corp somehow knew the xenomorph was on lv426 (I'm guessing at the number but it sounds right) that's why the nastromo was stopped there and when they didn't get back a message plans were made to set up a colony with the hope that they would be able to get hold of whatever it was.
The only trace of a xeno on Ripples escape ship was blown out the airlock and in Aliens the nest and everything around it including the spacejockys ship was nuked ""we take off and nuke it from orbit, it's the only way to be sure"" Now as it happened the bases thermal reactor and teraformin plant went thermal nuking itself but if I was Ripple ied have dropped a nuke or 2 on the base as well just to be sure.

"Why not going to one of the planets we were before and pick up an Alien?" - because that's, what they did. They went to Fury 161 and picked up the only remaining DNA of an Alien. Before that, everything took place on LV-426, which has been nuked from orbit. The only way to be sure. And nobody knew about the events in Covenant or Prometheus at that time - neither in the franchise, nor in the real world. So, there was no other planet to go to. Maybe the only thing, which makes sense in this movie ;)

Again... CORRECTION! They did NOT nuke LV-426 from Orbit... That was teh Failsafe plan should the Marines be unsuccessful and would have been teh assumption made by Weyland Yutani as to what had happened... But only Ripley was left and she was a CIVILLIAN... Hicks was incapacitated - And Bishop was barely Functional, Both of them were the only ones who could have Authorised Launching the Nukes from the Sulaco!!!
So, LV-426 WAS NEVER ACTUALLY NUKED FROM ORBIT!
Upon loss of the Sulaco - It is most likely that Weyland Yutani having no contact assumed the area now too hostile to recover specimens from and declared it a dead planetoid... We have to remember that they are more than aware of the dangerous organism they are trying to obtain, So if their marines failed, No one else was going to succeed!
It is most likely that the Derelict was destroyed along with Hadley's Hope - After all, The colonists were sent to colonise set co-ordinates by Weyland Yutani as they wanted someone to get infected... The Crashed ship cannot have been too far from Hadley's Hope! And the Explosion that destroyed teh colony was the size of Kansas...
but NO! IT WAS NOT NUKED FROM ORBIT!!! Ripley could not authorise the Nukes to launch!!!

Oh word! One of the most divisive topics and I LOVE it. I remember seeing Alien 3 as a teenager in May of 1992 and there aren’t many movies, with story and editing flaws, that I would dare call masterpieces… I will argue anyone who calls Alien 3 a bad movie and I give much credit to the writers and director (we all know his name) for making the most dangerous and expensive gamble on a much coveted Hollywood sci-fi franchise. Sigourney Weaver herself stated ON CAMERA that Ripley was not meant to find her silver lining and was in a sense destined to be alone through this dark universe. What’s hilarious is that ALL of her crew members were killed in ALIEN and an aftershock of this was that we learn she also lost her daughter in ALIENS (expanded). What James Cameron did in ALIENS is say, “Nope she gets her silver lining by way of Hicks (husband) and Newt (daughter)”. Sorry to be the bearer of bad news but this was, to me, where ALIENS fell short as happy endings aren’t the norm in this universe which is what made the original so scary. On top of all this, James Cameron himself took offense to other filmmakers killing off his characters and publicly expressed this! This absolutely pissed me off as the death of those two characters was the reminder that this universe is not for all-american fairytale seekers! These creatures are like spores and they’re only goal is to multiply and dominate. This is why Alien 3 did much better overseas because it wasn’t an all-American version of “the good guys win, always!” Making a movie with convicts who carry ZERO weapons, living on a lice infested planet, with NO technology?!?! Huge gamble and probably one of the most interesting stories in this universe! Sigourney Weaver also wanted to die as she too said Ripley was not meant for the generic family ending. Yes Alien 3 has its issues with some storyline/ character components but it’s a bloody inventive film. Totally if you want an Alien movie that wraps the ending up in a cozy bow, watch Aliens and have a great sleep. If you can accept that life throws us bad news and we’re all going to die, continue on to Alien 3.
As for “Resurrection” NO IT IS NOT BETTER THAN ALIEN 3! That’s just complete nonsense.
    Love your episodes, Mr. Minty!

    1) the "cloning" is laughable in the film, even if you only have a high school bio knowledge of how DNA works. You can't clone a parasite by suing a blood sample from its host. Whedon needed to provide some better technobabble.
    2) Buffy (the movie) wasn't a big hit and the TV series only premiered as a spring replacement in 1997. It didn't get big for a while after that, so it likely played little if no role in Whedon getting the gig.

13:53 Actually, Newt is referenced several times in the scenes from the extended cut of the movie, so it does make sense to hint on her character. Furthermore, it's not completely out of place, regardless the character of Newt. Ellen Ripley is also a character that grew up discovering that monsters are real.

I thought for sure we'd get final confirmation as to whether or not the basketball throw over-the-shoulder was genuine or a special effect. I've heard people say yes and others say no.
Over all, I really like this one. Yes, it's silly and yes, it's dumb, but to me it's entertaining. I very much like the quirky humour, as well as the fact that they gave the aliens a bit more personality.

I agree, the quirkiness only added to the likability of this film. It had brief but quick funny sections - which you do not expect in Alien films.

I'd say Resurrection definitely didn't live up to the standards set forth by the first to titles, but if you're a fan of anything Alien, it's still essential you sit through this flick at least once.
By the way, nice choice of opening music! One of my personal favorites.

Actually Newt is brought up though never specifically mentioned
    1. When number 8 is being shown the flash cards and one has a girl on them
    2. When using the android to hack into the ship there is a dialog about number 8 remembering a girl who had nightmares but tried to help. Number 8 though says she can't even remember her name

This is definitely a “thrill ride” and fun kinda movie, and had it been released in the summer here in US, I believe the box office numbers would have been better!! Releasing this movie end of November, Thanksgiving US Holiday, probably had big holiday box office numbers but that probably quickly fell off due to Christmas holidays taking forefront in the culture.. Summer release is best for Alien movies because of teens going to watch several times being off from school, and adults looking for some escapism whilst said teens are running the streets!! LOL 😜🤘🏻🤣👽☠️

Alien 3: Theatrical Cut = Garbage
Alien 3: Special Edition (aka Workprint Cut) = The film that SHOULD HAVE been released! The special edition is absolutely amazing and makes you REALLY appreciate how deep the 3rd film really is. With 35-40 minutes added back in, it helps develop the characters, story and mood so much more and it gives tons of needed depth to the film that the theatrical cut lacked altogether. The Special Edition makes the film worthy of being the ending to the full trilogy. A lot of folks dont like tragedies, and its understandable in our society of happy endings. But A3 Special Edition justifies itself being a tragedy 100%. After the first time watching it years and years ago, my entire opinion of Alien 3 changed. Growing up as a kid obsessed with the Aliens films... I hated A3 (mainly because I grew up reading the Aliens comics from Dark Horse which continued the adventures of Newt, Hicks and Ripley). But after watching Special Edition, I completely changed my opinion of the film.
Alien Resurrection = film that shouldve stuck to its original script and not gotten rid of the initial idea for the newborn which an all white alien with red veins that sucked the blood out of its victims via its tongue/second mouth... and the film also shouldve kept the AMAZING battle sequence on Earth via Ripley/Call vs Vampire newborn!
To this day, I still prefer Alien 3: Special Edition to Resurrection. I was 16 and in my Sophomore year of HS when it came out. I had a friend who got me a copy of the script before the film came out. I was beyond disappointed with how much was cut from the script (especially the green house chase scene). It literally felt like half the movie had be thrown away. And the updated Newborn was, and still is to this day, the dumbest Xeno idea ever IMO!

I enjoyed the movie. Each film in the series had their own distinct take.
Minty, I got as #11 fact for you. There was an interview with Sigourney Weaver where she was talking about the basketball court scene. She said the shot where she tosses the ball over her shoulder into the basket, she actually made the shot! If you look closely at the shadow, you can see the ball go up and sink in the net. The cast members reaction was genuine after seeing her hit the shot.

Ripley saying Newt's quote about monsters at the start of the movie is to reference the monsters cloning her, which we see immediately after she says it. The Aliens aren't the ones using each other for selfish gain, so they're not the real monsters.

Alien 3 always catches a lot of s*** for being dark and depressing in this and that but I really feel like it's a really good movie and if you look at it from an outside point of view of it just being a standalone movie it's really very good it has some of the best acting of all the movies Charles Dutton was great in that movie the musical score was insanely good I'd almost say that it's my favorite aliens movie I know that sacrilegious but I'm not going to say I love one or two just to sound trendy I got to say I think the third one's my fave and I do like Resurrection as well it's got that goofy European style

Love the Alien series. Bought the box set. ALIEN 3 is the only one of the 4 I tend to skip when I re-watch. Thought the 1st 2 were the best but Resurection beat 3 19 times over. The Behind the scenes of the box set on all of them are real good too but in watching behind the scenes of 3... you get a good understanding of why if failed so badly.

I can't believe people hate this movie so much. I personally don't. I've enjoyed it when I first saw it. It was the only Alien movie until that point that I managed to catch in the theatres and I still kind of like it. I agree that the Newborn design is a bit off but the whole idea of crossbreeding was pretty cool to me. When they announced this movie I was really wondering how were they going to bring back Ripley and cloning was probably the best way. How else were you going to resurrect her? Also - I always thought this movie was an addition. I always saw Alien as a Trilogy + Resurrection. It's like a bonus material. I really like what Sigourney has done with the Ripley character in this movie. It's like the Alien has been a part of her life for so long that now it's become a part of her. I like how she moves and does those weird face expressions. And believe it or not I even loved Winona Ryder. I loved the idea of basically artificial humanoids creating their own species that was more humane than we are and got discontinued because they refused to follow orders

Some of the proposed sequels, such as the A3 where Hicks, Newt, and Bishop end up on a space station and the A4 on earth, are more imaginative than the actual movies they made.

I agree with you, it's a guilty pleasure. But I like it because it's so weird and strange and it has some solid science fiction premises behind it such as Ripley's failed cloning attempts. Sure, it's the third-best Alien movie, but a close third behind Alien and Aliens.

i love this channel, been rewatching all your vids recently.
The alien franchise is alot like terminator.
the first ones were horror movies.
the second ones were action movies.
it was all downhill after that.....
however the alien movies werent AS bad as terminator.
while t3 and salvation were ok genesys and dark fate were atrocious.
alien 3 has a cool plot at least.
i dont think i have ever HATED an alien film.

exactly!!! and not only that, but if you managed to read David Twohy's rejected "Alien 3" script, it even mentions how the Xenomorphs were cloned and came out with various appearances and abilities, due to the genetic experimentation that created them.

I actually really like Alien3, especially the re-edited version. I think it has solid performances and thematically fits with the series and is a good way to wrap up the trilogy. Resurrection has some good bits, but overall, I'm not a huge fan. But, at least the characters generally do things that make sense, unlike in Prometheus or Covenant. Ugh.
