This movie scared the crap out of me as a kid.
I finally rewatched it a few years ago after having not seen it for a long time, and even now in my 40's, there were still some creepy scenes that gave me chills.
That just goes to show how well it was made.
    Thanks Minty.

No matter your standards, no matter what kind of movies one prefers, "Predator" is one of the best action movies of all time! The stars aligned on this one. One of the movies that is so so rewatchable...

Hey you know, speaking of rewatchable movie I just have to tip my hat off to that mini-gun shoot-out scene, where they all shoot in one direction, they basically mow down everything in its path. I remember seeing this movie and I'm just in love with this movie like minty says. Great stuff that they did on this movie.

I have an admittedly sizeable list of movies that if I see are coming on it's mandatory that I at least watch part of them (I'll never drop cable until I'm forced to or can't afford it, the On Demand world has ruined the excitement and thrill of turning on a radio or television and discovering something new or hearing the right song or movie come on at the perfect moment). But Predator is very high on that list. Though I tend to drift off to other things and leave it on in the background once Arnold is alone. That's also a real testament to how great Predator is though, half of the movie has no dialogue but is still great. He doesn't need to talk to a volleyball to explain what's happening, you just understand it.

As a some-time armorer for film, it always cracks me up to see the blank-firing adapters in some of the M-16 barrels. Some were so glaringly obvious I wonder why they were left in the final cut. Good news, though- the adapters have evolved and are usually located further down the barrel of the weapon and out of sight. Thanks for the additional insight and trivia, Mark!

I have always loved this movie since I was a kid. I would point out that the video game Predator Hunting Grounds is a very faithful recreation of the movie. They took in many of the movie's story elements and integrated them into the game. Like when you play as the predator hunting other players as the commandos you have to use the treetops to move, and the thermal vision to better see. They also used the same music as well to give it that authentic feel. Great game and actually a lot of fun.

Shumaker ruined that franchise and if you remember Michael Keaton after meeting with Shumaker to discuss his vision for Batman, Keaton walked from the project. (This was for Batman Forever) He knew then how bad it was going to be, and he was right. I think Batman Forever was just as lousy as Batman and Robin. George Clooney as Batman and Val Kilmer as Batman were not good choices, and those movies reflected that choice.

If you ever do more Predator trivia:
The novelisation(which was based off an early draft of the script) opens with an homage to Alien, with the Predator waking up from hypersleep.
In Arnie's autobiography, 'Total Recal' he said he was so cold being covered in mud that he kept himself from shivering by drinking Jagermeister schnapps. He admits he was pretty blitzed by the time they got around to telling 'Action!'
AVP Galaxy has the original shooting script, which sees Dutch realising what the guerilla soldiers were to his elite team is what they are to the Predator.

This was an epic movie despite what critics had to say about it. This movie introduced a new alien nightmarish creature that has become an icon in sci-fi films. I still say this movie was the best of all the Predator movies that have been made, because you just cannot beat the original. I am surprised that they did not have a sequel with Arnold reprising his role as, "Dutch". I know originally Arnold was approached for Predator 2, but he did not agree with the script having the action take place in a city. Danny Glover did a good job in Predator 2, but it just seemed to be missing something without Arnold being in the film. The movie definitely has an impact given the fact the original was made 36 years ago, and we still are talking about this film. Every time I watch Predator, it feels like it's the first time I have seen it and that in itself proves how good of movie Predator is, despite the critics. I hear there is a possible reboot in the making but given the reboot flops Hollywood has been pumping out, I hope they leave this movie alone, or at least keep their political agendas out of the movie. Of course, this is Hollywood and that will be a virtual impossibility because they just cannot stop themselves.

Let's be honest: the plot really is tissue-thin. That's a positive. It doesn't need an hour of backstory before we get into the main story. Everything you need to know is on-screen. So many modern screenwriters should learn the value of leanness.

Jesse Ventura claimed that he started the early morning workout trend, making it a point to beat Arnold to the "gym" area just to mess with him. He said he poured water on himself so that it looked like he had been working out like crazy and sweating buckets by the time Arnold showed up, and he'd be like, "Oh, nice of you to get here finally". Since he was secretly fresh, he was able to keep pace with Arnold for the rest of the workout, making Arnold believe that he was some kind of maniac.

    Great video as always Minty.
Predator has to be the archetypal action movies of the 80s:
    - Arny or Stallone - check
    - Set in a jungle - check
    - Unbelievable plot - check
    - Corny one liners - check
    - Corrupt government/corporate official (with the team) - check
    - Most of the team dies - check
    - Lots of explosions - check
    - One on one face off at the end where the good guy wins - check
    - A-Team style resourceful weapon building montage - check
    ... I could keep going.
The only thing it is missing is a kid that turns out to be more resourceful than most of the rest of the cast, although Anna kind of fills that roll.

Critics had/have a visceral distaste for Sci-fi/Horror movies. At that time (and even today) critics for the most part couldn't judge a movie based on it's own merits. Critics had/have an inherent bias against Sci-fi/Horror Genre. At one point (primarily in the '70s and '80s), I judged a movie as worth watching by how much critics hated it.

The 80s was a bizarre time for movies. TONS of classics came from the 80s, but very few of them won awards or were critically acclaimed. Meanwhile most of the Oscar winners of the 80s are completely forgotten today.

    • @themorn2112
      @themorn2112 Рік тому +1

@@snex000 Also, most Oscar winners weren't money makers. at the time (and even today) many movies near the end of the year were not made to entertain the masses, but the judges and film critics. I am more likely to watch a "People's Choice" award winner over an "Oscar" winner.

@@M--GT8223 At some point later in the '80s a few critics broke away from my supposition (Gene Siskel (?) actually liked "The Thing"😲 but not for the reasons most people would like it, He liked it because of the character study of the protagonists in a crisis [I specifically remember that review because of the shock and surprise]; and Roger Ebert actually liked "Project Ako"😲 [to the best of my knowledge that was the first anime that a major film critic admitted he liked on camera]). I have always wandered if these examples were guilty pleasures for them, or were they pandering to their audience because the preconceived notions reaching their ears. They even aired an episode on their program featuring their "guilty Pleasures". Bottom line, it's the exception the "proves" the rule... 😉

I like the multicultural subtext of the story. The cast is a diverse group of humans coming together to defeat a predatory alien from outer space. Movies of the 80s (especially action movies- Predator, Lethal Weapon, etc.) were great at blending in racial issues for a common battle without beating the audience over the head with the message. I made some great friends in school because these films had a character for everyone to be on the playground.
