  • DIY carpet repair without special tools.
This video shows you how to repair carpet with tools that you have around the house.
    Carpet tape from Amazon: amzn.to/4joDHkq
You don’t need to spend a lot of money on buying special carpet repair tools, such as a heat bond seaming iron, a carpet seam roller, or a carpet seam cutter, which you will most likely use just once or twice. Now, you do need to get carpet tape, but carpet tape is inexpensive to get in the first place, and the carpet tape that I use in the video doesn’t require a seaming iron.
Critical requirement for successful carpet repair:
    1) Matching piece of carpet to use for the repair. Look inside your closet to see if it has the same carpet as the area you need to repair.
    2) Great fit of the replacement carpet piece.
    a. You can’t have large gaps between the replacement carpet and the existing carpet, for obvious reasons.
    b. You can’t have any overlap between the replacement carpet and the existing carpet because any area of overlap will result in carpet that is not taped down because there’s carpet underneath carpet and not adhesive under carpet. (You can use glue gun to glue that part down although it won’t end up looking pretty.)

One of the commenters noted that "double side tape has to come out and it always takes the padding along with it." I want to take this opportunity to remind folks that you should NOT be peeling the protective paper off the underside of the tape that will be touching the padding. In this video, I peeled off the protective paper from the top side of the tape ONLY but NOT the underside. I trim off the sides of the protective paper that is stuck on the underside of the tape, but I never take it off. You can't have the underside sticky because then it will be very difficult to slide in the carpet tape under the existing carpet.

So does the carpet tape just sit on top of the padding?

    • @KYKCreations

*Great, straight forward video,, it was exactly what I needed too. It was so helpful! I was looking for a way to repair some cat damage to carpet. The damage was also in the same location.
*The only other thing I separately learned elsewhere {Floors by Southern boys, How to Repair a Carpet Seam: 4:40-6:09} for a better seam (seamless) was to offset the "bubbles" or dots on each side of the carpet backing from each other. Be sure to cut in between the grid lines containing the bubbles/dots or you will fray/split the carpet fibers. Also, be sure that that carpet runs the same way (the ssme direction it lays down).

Awesome video. I do this professionally, but this is simple and very DIY friendly. The carpet trade in general is not very homeowner friendly, and if I have to make the trip to make a patch this size for a client, I won't do it for less than $100. Yeah, I do it the right way every time, but I myself would love to save $100+ by doing a small job myself rather than hired out.

  • @dougwollard741

Very informative video. If i may, id like to add a couple of things to this. First is, when using carpet from a closet to patch carpet from traffic areas its usually difficult to get a close match. So it is very important to make sure the carpet knap is going in the same direction. Wear pattern or no wear at all if the patch is not running the same direction as the existing carpet its gonna look pretty bad. Second, when using the adhesive tape. Start out by matching up the edges rather than tucking under the door facing first. Thirdly, try to buy or borrow an actual carpet knife with several extra blades. Begin with a brand new blade and change blades often. And lastly, be super extra careful with said blades as they are much sharper than utility blades!

    • @KYKCreations
      @KYKCreations  2 роки тому +2

You raise a good point about the carpet wear. The carpet that I repaired was relatively new (less than a year old), so there was not much wear.

Couple of questions. Anyone know what nails were used and what adhesive tape was used? Also, are the nails noticeable after having been placed in the carpet? I have 3 cats and I just moved into a new apartment and during this time they’ve destroyed the carpet connected to my bedroom and bathroom doors…as well as some cheap tile-esc flooring near our kitchen leading to the laundry room, which is a mission for another day. Anyone looking for a tip, get rid of your carpet get a good underlay that stores heat and buy wooden flooring. Lasts 30x longer than carpet

Don't we need to glue the sides of the carpet? OR instead of glue, you used nails? Please let me know!

when professionals install carpet, the "sides" are put over tack strips, which hold the carpet in place and make it really easy to remove the carpet because the carpet is not permanently glued on or nailed in (although I nailed it in a few places as part of my repair).

I put an link to the carpet tape from Amazon in the description box, but if you have a Home Depot near you, I would recommend that you pick one up from Home Depot because it's cheaper there.
