    That would be cool if theres a video on how to mount and place shocks, such as cycling the main leaf on the pack and finding the correct position for the shocks.

    That is a great idea!!! We will try and get that into our program schedule for the television show. We know it can be tricky for someone that hasn't done it before, so thanks again for the idea...keep them coming.

    @Baja714 Best thing to do is Google Dimple Dies, there are a lot of option out there.
    The shocks we used are 14" long.
    Thanks for the comment we plan on reading some of our user submitted comments in the next episode.

    Maybe it's fine but I thought you would have added gussets to the bed mounting flanges. Seems like a very strong cage held on by four little flat flanges.

  • @dirtlifemagazine
    @dirtlifemagazine  12 років тому +1

    Yes we did...good question. I can't remember the exact angle but I think we mention it in some of the voice-overs. Those are 16" 3.0 double-bypass shocks

    We could've done the round top hoop if it were an F-150 but that radius would have been tight on our Ranger. Glad you liked the video even though you hate the bedcage..LOL

    Awesome videos! Off road racing has become my new passion. Love learning all I can and seeing how its done! Keep up the good work. Only suggestion i have is letting us know the size of material used for the builds! Again great videos!

  • @dirtlifemagazine

    As long as they are between 14" and 16" then yes. You will need long travel leaf springs to take full advantage of a bedcage. Stock leaf spring packs won't "Droop" out enough.

  • @dirtlifemagazine
    @dirtlifemagazine  11 років тому +1

    No there is a hole in the bed and that is one long shock. That is why you build a bedcage to mount longer shocks for more travel.

    @illdieinthegym More power and better gas mileage are really polar opposites. It is hard to get more power and better gas mileage. The only way I can see this is if you get a professional tune on the engine, but don't expect too much more power. It is still a 4 cyl.

    So its only really dupprted from the sheet metal of the bed? None of its support welded to the frame?

    Prerunner refers to the type of customization done on the truck where we take offroad racing inspired suspension and put it on the truck so it can be driven faster through the desert. Prerunners are typically 2wd and I guess that is where Toyota got that name because it looks like their 4wd truck but it is only 2wd

    So you didnt weld your bedcage to the frame at all? Just used the bed mounting bolts? Will that hold up? I like the idea of not cutting up my bed too much,

    • @user-neo71665

    • @dirtbiker103
      @dirtbiker103 9 років тому

      +Matt Eiswerth I had a simular set up on my Ranger just using the stock bed mounts and it held up fine, mostly just a daily driver that I would take out on the weekends but I wouldn't recommend it if you're going to push the limits of your prerunner.

    • @brennanherbon5598

  • @dirtlifemagazine
    @dirtlifemagazine  12 років тому

    You could still make a mini bedcage but it hardly seems worth it is you aren't going to get extra travel out of them. They are also too long to fit in the factory location. We used to have 8" Fox shocks mounted there and they were really too long.

  • @duerksenmotorsports1355
    @duerksenmotorsports1355 6 років тому +1

    Can you explain the purpose/ benefit of running the shock on top of the leaf spring? wouldn't they work better together if the shock was mounted on the rear end housing instead of on top of the leaf? I understand that you are gaining axle drop and more travel but wouldn't it perform better with the shock mounted to the rear axle and get a longer shock? or ditch the leafs in general and add coil overs?

    • @SgtS0apy
      @SgtS0apy 6 років тому

      coil overs are not as stable as leafs with bypasses. Also have fun finding a coil with 16"+ of travel. At that point you might as well just link it

  • @xundeadxempirex
    @xundeadxempirex 10 років тому +7

    I honestly wouldn't go to the desert with this setup. Maybe if you're looking for something functional, that looks good. But not fully functional for a desert truck imo. The top, and bottom of the bed wasn't even reinforced with flat steel to give it strength. If you want something fully functional, and ready for the desert, i'd suggest cutting into the bed, and anchoring it to the frame. That's just my opinion though. Hate mail/comments welcomed.

    • @connormelvin
      @connormelvin 10 років тому

      Im whatching this thinking the same thing.

    • @xundeadxempirex
      @xundeadxempirex 10 років тому

      connor melvin Their fabricator is an amazing fabricator, don't get me wrong. He builds some pretty amazing concepts. However, this really does not look like it would support suspension. You go hard enough, and everything gets heated enough, those shocks are going to put an extreme amount of pressure on the overall structure and somethings gonna give. That's imho.

    • @derrickspoelhof3964
      @derrickspoelhof3964 9 років тому

      AmerikanPsyko these builds are definitely not made to take hardcore abuse for extended periods of time, which is what a prerunner is supposed to be.

    • @xundeadxempirex
      @xundeadxempirex 9 років тому

      Derrick Spoelhof I understand they're not supposed to take a hardcore beating, however, a prerunner is made to take a beating. I can only assume that 30 minutes through a whoop section would stress this cage out dramatically. I could be wrong, just my opinion. I think the fabricator is a very skilled, and talented fabricator, I just doubt how well this would actually work out in the desert. We built prerunners, to prerun. If it's not functional, why build it. That's just my philosophy.

    • @TommyBlanton
      @TommyBlanton 9 років тому +2

      +AmerikanPsyko I'm not trying to be a critic, but I agree. This is built to look cool. I think the cage would hold up fine (although it needs a vertical bar from top to bottom near the shock). Its the 4 chinsey mounting tabs that are going to fail in a woop section. If nothing else I would use tubing between the right and left side of the base and then bosses with grade 8 hardware in place of the tabs. It makes no sense for the mounting point to be the weakest point.
