Question to viewers: what is the most important thing to you when buying tires for your EV?
Price, rolling resistance
55 sidewall ratio
Two questions:
1) Does your Volt have a smooth ride?
2) How do the low resistance tires affect braking?
Thank you!
Tread life, efficiency and noise. All pretty equal in importance. Price last because a high tread life tire pays for itself and I expect to pay a little premium for all these expectations.
"....quieter and faster and that are the features that we enjoy... " - don't care about that whatsoever. My Tesla is just a convenient commuter and I don't care how fast it is or how quiet it is. What I care how economically practical is that, nothing else.
I just put Continental PureContact tires on my Model S after the original Michelins were done at 35K miles. Love the Continentals so far. Much quieter, better handling, and work well in the rain. They also currently have a $70 rebate on 4 tires. And I did not know about the Continental road service for tire issues. Thanks for that!
Just so you're aware, both Continental and Michelin offer the free flat tire assistance.
idk i just got a flat with 10,000 miles and tesla cant "fix" it i recommend people to get their tires from the tire shop
35K is good all things considered, I just took my SUV in for service, no wear at all, but that’s an ICE. For EVs you can easily go through tires every 10K so I would expect to replace tires every 2 years for EV, for ICE 5-6.
Yep got Michelin on mine . No sound deadling mat in them cost cutting exercise.
So what are the best tires? Which brand/model? You didn’t ask, do you have to rotate tires on an AWD car?
This video didnt cover anything in my opinion. Just mentioned one brand and didnt even give the name of the tire.
Can I run same size, same manufacturer tires on my Tesla Model X . It came with the front tires smaller than the rear tires. Do you know why this is the case?
Can't rotate MX. I would love to put a wider tire on the wheels to help prevent rim rash!
Why not show the tires!!! Otherwise thanks a lot for the video, good info.
The only thing I learned from this is that continental will sell a slightly quieter and more expensive tire and the preferred method for rotating non directional tires. And that the future of tires is crazy
So what kind of range can I gain by going with a low rolling resistance tire compared to an all season tire?
I liked that you made this video about tires, but your tire expert Joe did not provide much useful information. He seemed to like Continental tires, but did not state which models have the foam insert. Do other manufacturers have foam insert tires too? Many of us who own the widely popular Tesla Model 3 with the standard 18” wheels who drive conservatively would like to know what tire he’d recommend for quietness and long mileage. Keep in mind that the car came with Michelin Primacy MXM4 P235/45R18 98W which seen to be good tires.
I wish 🇬🇧 had a company like that.
What a good tire for Tesla model 3 , 19 inch with a 96w speed rating?
Discount tire is an awesome privately owned company. I wish they were public so I could buy their stock
What tires you recommend? Michelins? Or just a budget tire. No snow. Just rain.
Adding pressure above recommended levels does decrease rolling resistance but also increases stopping distance and reduces lateral traction.
Also causes excess wear on the center of the tire reducing overall tire life
Model 3 awd states 42 psi on door. I run at 47 with NO issues. Max PSI on tire is 51 psi
Which Continental tire has foam inserts?
Video wasn't as detailed as most of us expected. Gotta dig few things ourselves.
Saw another UA-camr talk about going from 17s to 16s on his Bolt, for a better ride... He chose a tire/rim combo that was *lighter* than OE... Any comments?
Great video. How about tires to increase the handling? Denton TX
It's the same as it was for a 1960 mini, a 1918 Model T.
Wider sticky tire usually gives better grip but the trade off is lower tire life and reduced range.
@@pogo1140 Thx for the reply
Hey Alex, what's the insurance cost per tire? I had a dodge dart that I traded in for my standard range model 3, and the insurance was $19 per tire for the dart (sadly just renewed from last year).
I would rename the title/description of the video to better suit the content it provides.
That intro ending though... LoL... EeeeEeeeEelextirrriiiCCc! Lmao
Which continental tire !!!!!
The average electric vehicle is over 2 metric tonnes so side wall strength is important due to loading. I like a tyre of about 60db and good low rolling resistance. This seems to limit us the summer season tyres.I like the Goodyear efficient grip performance. In Europe all tyres have the ratings in a form of a label by law. I am sure that is true in the us also. Worth checking before purchase the side wall issue is down to a complex plastic rubber compounds but really this needs to be on the tyre wall an ev symbol perhaps.
Tesla stock tires have always had foam inserts.
The foam actually reduces the "Standing Wave" generated at higher speeds, not so much to over tire noise.
Thank you. That was a highly informative video.
Yup, Conti's are great. I also like Fulda Tires.
Tesla road assistance doesn't cover my area and I'm in Chicago. What?
Was this a paid advertisement for discount tires and continental?
I hear Bridgestone has a “quiet” line of tires too.
The one "quiet" tire of theirs I know of is not a LRR tire, per se -- or at least it's not marketed as such.
Foam pads do make it harder to fix puncture flats.
makes the tire heavier which increases un-sprung weight.
We have the 2018 Model S and I have to say that the Goodyear supplied tires on the car were very rough and only lasted about 27000 miles. I replaced them a few weeks ago with Pirelli Cinturato Strada sport AS 245/45 R19's without the foam. The ride is now almost as smooth as my Mercedes wagon. These Pirelli's are supposed to be a 50000 mile tire. Time will tell how many miles I will get on them but they will be smoother miles. Are they quite? I can't answer that question as I am 71 with bad hearing. My passengers say that the car is quite. Tesla wanted about 350 bucks for a foam lined tire. I purchased my Pirelli tires at discount for less than 230 per tire and that included a 25 buck per tire for road hazard replacement and I got a 70 buck rebate. I will say this to all you people that say the foam is so great. It is not so great for some of us! At least the foam in the Goodyear tires that I had. Maybe another brand with foam would be smoother than my Goodyear tires were. I do not always follow what some experts tell me because they may be getting cash from tire makers and I have heard that an expert is a drip under pressure. I have not noticed any increased energy use with the Pirelli's and my wife stopped complaining about the rough ride of our Tesla. I am very happy with the Pirelli's that I purchased. I hope that they last 50000 miles but will have to travel a lot to find out. That should be fun for an old dude.
@@pogo1140 isn’t foam weightless pretty much?
@@TaylorPhase Foam, hard rubber, metal band that holds them in place on the wheel, it's not just foam.
One of the things you failed to talk about is safety, low roll resistance seems to equal longer braking distances and poor grip in a corner especially in the wet.
Discount Tire has always been great. However we have a new Chevy Bolt and we went and attempted to have Discount Tire rotate the tires and was informed that it is a 40.00 charge for that service., and was NOT offered the insurance plan. No longer a complimentary service.
Someone is not being truthful. P.S. we have been a loyal Discount Tire customer for over 30 years.
Wow. I have bought from them many times also but they have never charged me for tires I didn't even buy there.
Service does vary a little between franchises. We patronize the outlet that really goes out of their way to cater to their customers.
The foam filled tyres are a load of marketing BS.
you beat me to it, i feel like this is an ad lol
My 2020 Model Y has the stock Continental tires with foam in them. That's a gimmick the tires are noisy.
Tires don’t make cars faster
Continental are overpriced and crap mileage
