How pathetic the defendant was when she tried to make the judge feel sorry for her because her husband died and she knew she didn't have a real defense!
She can't have it both ways. She wants us to believe she couldn't function because of her husband's death, yet there she was wheeling and dealing over a wig that wasn't the way she wanted it to be. Either she couldn't function or she could.
Yeah that was low and embarrassing.
Not to mention they had been in conversation. I waited for her to clap in with “over text!?” 😂 hairdressers don’t have the luxury of texting you while working. It’s sporadic when they have a moment like going to the bathroom 😅

Her personality is the real deal. Saw her on 60 minutes when she was a family court judge and she grilled the attorneys and social workers like she did with these folks.
Why I respect her immensely.. brutal yet efficient breaking everything down for all to see. A gem of a woman

The lady that stopped payment on the check is the reason why some small business's crumble. If you don't have momentum in your business, a transaction like that can crumble your business. I'm glad she had to pay her back, she was dead wrong.

I find it a bit fascinating that if you watch enough small claims court cases on TV, you learn quite a bit about behavior. As a result, you might get better at catching sneaky people trying to lie their way out of a situation...

Trust me, I've actually heard worse. One was a guy who was being sued by his mother for insurance fraud. He launched into THE most monotonous airplane engine drawl I've ever heard in my life. I felt my eyelids immediately start to get heavier and heavier. I had to pause the video, skip back and turn on the captions and turn the volume all the way down! Wow, he was the perfect cure for insomnia.

She might have got her triple damage if she hadn't annoyed JJ at the start. She reads all the paperwork prior to stepping into court, I am sure she knew about the triple damage and would have awarded it if she felt it was necessary. I think Miss Thing ruined that by acting up, so all she got was the basic costs she was owed.
I dont think the judge would let this interfere in her verdict. Even if she was annoyed by that woman, it would be wrong to use it as a reason to apply justice. As a judge, you must be able to be neutral and logical, even if annoyed, so the verdict must be legally correct and rational.
@@Istariable you obviously have not watched a lot of Judge Judy lol. She makes her own rules according to what she thinks is fair.... and that includes the personalities of the people in front of her. There was no reason to award the plaintiff triple damage just because it's allowed.... JJ would expect her to prove that the defendant cost her that much in damages first.
The defendant however was clearly trying to get away without paying, and in those circumstances JJ might have awarded the plaintiff triple damages just to make a point against a shady defendant. But the plaintiff ruined that by acting for the cameras and annoying the judge. So she only got what she was owed, which was a fair and just verdict - so it was legally correct and rational, as you say. I just think she ruined her chance to get something more, because the law provided an opportunity for that to happen.
No triple damages only applies to theft and is at the discretion of the law, it's not applicable here. JJ doesn't make up her own rules, she follows the law albeit she has some discretion within reason. If the triple damages rule applied she'd have to use it, it doesn't apply. The plaintiff got what she deserved and was made whole. JJ frowns upon people using the courts to enrich themselves and she doesn't take into account personalities except to rule in areas of "he said she said" so for example if a litigant cannot control themselves in court but then tells her they were calm and not the aggressor in a situation then she may use their behaviour in court as a way to determine what actually happened but even if they were the aggressor if they had damages and were entitled to compensation they'd get it. I've seen her tell someone that the person is a piece of work but unfortunately they have no case. She follows the law that's why she's been at the top for years.

@@elvickRULES Not...really. One could be considered additive while the other is multiplicative. The other thing is words have meaning, especially in law, and misuse of words or the wrong words can result in things unintended. Treble is the actual legal word for treble damages. Tripling the damages is what treble damages does, however is only triples the result. You could triple damages and add it to the damages, but treble specifically doesn't do that.
So words matter and using them correctly does too.

I have compassion for the woman who ordered the wig. Once I ordered a wig like that and didn’t realize it was over processed until I got it home and washed it myself. It was so tangled and matted, then the hair began to shed. But at that point I had already paid her $500 cash. I never patron her business again.

She’s mad someone texted her and gave advance notice? Doesn’t matter if she texted you at 4 am or midnight. At some point, you had to have seen that text when you woke up. Especially if you know you have an appointment with her and she’s texting you the day of.

It’s amazing that so many people say they can’t remember the dates of things because technology keeps a record of everything and people just need to use it. If the defendant used online banking to initiate the stop payment, there is a record of that. If she went into the bank, she likely would have received some documentation of the transaction. 🙄

Why do people go on Judge Judy and expect her to follow the law?
It is Judy justice; which means if she is hungry, didn’t hear you right, doesn’t like your clothes, or anything else, she can decide to completely ignore whatever she wants. Watch long enough and you will see her contradict her own rulings.
They come in the show because they get paid. If you want to letter of the law applied stay in your local jurisdiction.
Triple damages should have been applied here, that type of financial penalty is a good deterrent for scammers

Yes, some people do. Not everyone wants their bank info online. But it's not as common anymore. As a business owner I love getting paid via check & cash. Card payments I have to pay a fee 😜
@@smiley27b I saw a UA-cam couple move from Europe to the US and they were totally bewildered waiting in line whilst people paid by cheque at the grocery store etc... it's so old fashioned. Then they discovered people don't like debit cards they want you to pay with credit cards, it's really strange to the rest of us. In the UK and EU hardly anybody uses cheques, I had to order a cheque book to pay one item as they could only accept a cheque, I've not used it for years and years. We all use debit cards and why would paying by debit card in a shop equate to having your bank details online? Saying that most of us do use online banking as it's very secure and I can see my transactions in real time so there's no checking a statement once a month and then finding out something is wrong, I would know the same day.
Most of these episodes are more than 15 years old. That explains the checks. Very few people in the USA uses checks anymore.
@@adisciple9485 actually most of the episodes uploaded recently have been from 2016/2017. This one was from 2017, we saw the cancelled cheque dated 2016. Certainly the channel I watch where the European couple moved to Austin Texas last year cheques are in regular use, much to their confusion. Comments on their videos from other Americans suggest it is still a normal thing. Perhaps it depends where you live in the US? I don't even think shops would accept cheques now in the UK. Years ago my debit card acted as a cheque guarantee up to a set amount printed on the card so businesses were guaranteed to get the money but that was removed from our cards a long time ago. I know by the time I was 30 it was gone and that was 14 years ago!
