This is what the album should’ve been Just them playing the songs all together with this same sound quality and all with Kirk doing background vocals and all This shit sounds so raw and awesome
All the St.Anger riffs are very badass, this album are very complete, have a lot of great lyrics, all the members have a lot of anger inside of them, that is what make this album a great album. I don't understand why it is so fkng underrated and criticized.
The production is just fucking garbage and lets be honest, the majority of the lyrics are very cringe worthy, 70% of the album has very good riffs though
The production, Lars drum set, and some songs that are longer than should be. The proof is that the Rehearsals DVD and the live versions of St. Anger songs sound way better than the studio version.
I don't get why everyone hates on St. Anger. I love this album. No, its not their best, far from it, but it's still great stuff to bang your head to. Purify is one of my favorite Metallica songs ever...not just on this album, EVER! I'm glad they went back to the older style as well, but I don't feel this one was a waste at all. Thanks for keeping it metal guys!
scyx they needed to get so many issues out, and they did through them playing this album. First time I heard it when it came out I didn't understand it, but now I savor the songs!
@@stephenp2174 And the way the album sounded gave him the outlet to properly express all the emotions he'd been feeling since when he entered rehab in 2001, in my opinion the lack of solos approach worked for this album because I don't think any were needed especially given how much tension was in the band when making the whole thing and it goes kinda hard just with some of the riffs all over it like the main one of this and Sweet Amber for example.
It also seems like the longer a band's been around, the more they're popularity decreases. Give a band at least 10 years and you'll start hearing the claims about how they've "sold out" and how good they "used to be": Metallica, Iron Maiden, AC/DC, Slipknot, Judas Priest, etc. I just ignore those people. lol I have no concern for how popular a band is or is not. I like good music regardless of whether or not it's "cool" or "uncool". And I like St. Anger. End of story. :3
whiteboy7176 yeah but then when they hit the 15-20 year mark they become a classic band or old school band to younger kids and the popularity starts to come back. Selling out is just the nature of the beast. Bands that didn’t couldn’t afford to keep shoes on their feet or became irrelevant. The cycle goes: start out, become popular, sell out to stay afloat then use those earnings to return back to your roots.
Death Magnetic and Hardwired were great albums. But anyone honestly giving their first impression of St. Anger would attest to its objectively bad sound. Anything can sound good after we listen to it over and over, hence why we come to "like" St. Anger over time - familiarity bias and the Metallica symbol saved it. If some new band had produced St. Anger, it would have been laughed out of the room.
Every band that gets bored of the same shit and tries to do something new or getting out of their comfort zone is almost automatically bashed and accused of sell out. Sometimes people get really picky and stupid.
What I've noticed: Every Band has had albums, that most of they're fans have hated! Example: Metallica: Load, St anger Megadeth: Risk, Cryptic Writings Anthrax: Sounds Of White Noise, Stomp442 Slayer: Diablous In Musica Mushroomhead: Beautiful Stories For Ugly Children Guns n' Roses: Chinese Democracy If you are one of the few people left who love bands for what they do, please thumb this up so everyone can see it!
Load was pretty good, and I like some tracks from St. Anger (this one for example). Lulú is a piece of shit, and I think Hardwired lacks of soul: it's like diet Death Magnetic.
I think people often forget that there is an entire genre of music that sounds like this; Stoner rock/metal (in a general sense) and nobody craps on those bands for playing that sound. I think the main reason this album had such a bad reputation was bc it was made by Metallica.
Maybe so but I do like the way it sounded on the record because in my opinion, it perfectly encapsulates all the tension within the band during the making of the album and especially how the 2 years it took to finish it was hell for James specifically given how he was newly sober.
What they meant is that, they were trying to get back to their roots (meaning metal, instead of the hard rock feel they had in Load/Reload). The sound however, was a new approach as they tried new ways of writing (they did everything in the studio at once instead of writing outside of the studio too) and just a new feel. Though it isn't old Metallica, I still like all of their works and I'm really excited to hear that their new album will be the bridge between Justice and the balck album. Peace!
man... The fuckin riffs in this song are insane. and what lars put behind them, say what you will, fit fuckin perfectly. really shows man. Btw james is the king of down picking. proof in the video above ( 3:21 i mean come on man. i know you that got you pumped too.)

This is some pretty heavy Metallica, I used to think this album was just a mess but now it jost flows together so well. More Metallica fans need to actual listen to this and not say its bad cause its missing solos but that doesnt represent the song. Its just great even the trash can sounding drums, Metallica!!! \m/

I’ll just say it. St Anger IS one of their best, from the perspective of what truly went into the album and what came out of it.
James was sober for the first time in 20+ years. It's amazing how different your brain works when you put down the booze for a while.
