Rigid foam insulation is the go-to. Bubble film radiant barrier is unfortunately a poor insulator in comparison. It does a better job at reducing solar gain.
Yes, very helpful, as are each of the episodes you've done. I too plan to build out the shell including electrical, but have much to learn before doing so. When you show "how" you do something down to what screws you use, you have really helped someone like me. Thanks
You still need to consider adding another Collar Tie or a Bottom Cord to your trusses. Some will call them ceiling joists. Will keep your walls from spreading out when you have a snow load on it.
Yes, you pointed out that those ceiling joists we're supposed to be 16 ft wide and you pointed out that what you had wasn't, they didn't change that, and you approved it? Wait till you get snow load, you're going to have a problem
Maybe I missed it but you talked about the need for a welded 16 foot with vertical uprights to support the roof -- something the county needed. I noticed that they didn't replace the 6 foot truss bars. Wasn't that a show stopper for you????
He explains it in another video, it was part of the agreement they made because it worked out for him anyway for what he wanted to do with his car lift
@@TinShackVideos i'm an architect.....The collar ties lock the rafters to the roof ridge and are required to be in the top 1/3 of the roof. If there are no ceiling joists locking the rafters together at the the top plate, the exterior walls will eventually push outward, unless a structural roof ridge is used to absorb and support the roof weight and transfer it to the exterior gable walls (not done here). So if he doesn't have ceiling joists, then at the very least he needs rafter ties which serve the same purpose as ceiling joists. These are installed in the lower 1/3 of the roof, and at a larger spacing than the rafters, sometimes every other rafter. But the stress on the bottom of the rafter needs to be taken into consideration because it's not locked together at the top plate. I wouldn't want to be inside this shop during a 12" wet snow fall. Where is this located????
2yrs down the line when he's pulled the fallen building off his car or truck, then he will hire a real crew to come in and put a real metal building up. I wouldn't pay 200 for that junk!!! I have put up metal buildings, this is not what you want. It made too cheap. 1st good wind storm and you'll see what I talking about!!!!
It's good to hear the company came back and fixed the problems along with an apology. Wow, I'm impressed with the company and the owner for understanding as he told me about the company redoing the job right.
Thank you for making this video series. We are going to be building a shop within the next few years and understanding the pitfalls is so very important. I’m sorry you experienced these issues and posting this journey will ensure folks know what to look for to ensure a better experience. Thank you for helping those who are on the same journey. God bless!
Honestly, from something like that I'd never hire that company. I don't care how good they come clean. It just means, to me anyways, if they can hide it they'll cut the corner there.
So glad I found your video on the metal garage. It's something we are seriously considering when building our house this year. Some of the items you mentioned like screws that match the building panels I would just assume that they would. Thank you!
I thought you were getting them to switch out the roof trusses to match the ones that they showed you on the blueprints that you Got approved through the planning board.
What about the 16' ft. roof rafters truss supports. I though some of those were to be welded. the ones that are up look the same. Those were to be welded 16 foot, with vertical uprights to support the roof. Did you walk on the roof ?
I thought your biggest complaint was the trusses. You showed the city trusses with 16 foot crosses not 6 foot. You didn't have them installed? What's up? You said they were bowing down?
9:18 - That's good advice, and it also applies to many situations in life. I'm reminded of something my dad used to say a lot: "Write shit down!"😄 It's a good idea to think of all your questions and things you want to address and write them down. Just taking the small amount of time it takes to jot something down could save you a lot of regret and BS.
THANKS SOOO MUCH for all this, you saved me LOTS of headaches, just had a 30x50x12 put up last week, fortunately for me it went off without a hitch thanks to you. Wish I could post a pic. Sorry for all your grief, looks like it's coming along nicely.
Well what happened to the 16’ hung trusses that are supposed to be triangulated in that you said you paid for. Looks like you’ll still have that roof slagging issue. And you thanked them for that.
Have to say, they did a much better job the second time. I'm still leery about those roof trusses, but I'm sure you know what you need in your particular area.
Where the corner trim is the base trim is supposed to come to a point with a 45 degree cut , your leaves an open spot for rodents to enter . Just the way I do it
Wow...$18,400 for your building? That sounds like you got a really good deal for a building that size. Good job staying on the builders too. You gotta watch 'em.
Thanks for the update especially the price. I originally wanted to go with a metal building but like you said you have to ask all the questions and avoid being ripped off so I fired that guy and went with wood bc if more readily available back in 2018. Your shop looks great! I know you guys enjoy it. Like being at home away from home.
I wonder if they originally came with already used panels and thats why they were all crimped and warped....from a job like yours where someone made them take them all down for whatever reason....(installer also knows you are documenting the whole thing, so has to play Mr.Nice. :)
Nothing wrong with that building very nice. I just put up the same size but wood framed as the price was about $8000 in materials but built myself. Looks great though, really nice!!
Don't confuse metal rafters and collar ties with trusses. Adding a full span collar tie does not a truss make. There's a reason trusses have "W" type braces between top and bottom chord of truss. They're structural components whose attachment points to top and bottom chords are not random but mathmaticly determined for transferring compression and tension loads, hence why they're called engineered trusses. Glad you're happier though.
Hello I belive that more important thant he side panel and trims you let them go on the ceiling joists, also the lack of isolation will be a problem in the future
When dealing with any contractor, always figure in the "choke factor", 36 inches or less... If something goes wrong, you can drive to his or her office, lean over their desk and choke them... Let them know, that's how they got the contract. You'd be surprised what they then volunteer...
Thanks for all the great information and support guys! Check out this new pergola build. ua-cam.com/video/yVoeGDs19SM/v-deo.html

Yeah ! But hey , the screw color match the tin !
I am just asking myself how much does it pay for the pub to the cie ?
I agree. That little ripple on the panel edges is not near as serious as that short ass collar tie.
A collar tie won't keep walls from spreading, it prevents uplift. A rafter tie would, or a bottom chord if it's a truss.
@@geopro0780 He's Georgia. Says no snow. But you are correct.

Thank you
Roof rafters will give you problems if you get big amount of snow...especially wet snow.
That looks so much better
It's good to hear the company came back and fixed the problems along with an apology. Wow, I'm impressed with the company and the owner for understanding as he told me about the company redoing the job right.
What ever happened about the cross-joists spanning the trusses?
Exactly!
Watch the video with the sound on.
@@gailtaylor1636 Did twice- not mentioned. Still shows to be 6' instead of the 16' he expected.
@@philbarrows2431 he said they agreed to keep the 6' if they added the "rat guards" and replaced the screws with color matched screws.

I respect someone that can admit a mistake, apologize and make it right! Looks good I’d love to have that building!

I installed a 24 / 40 in Florida. That thing was the hottest building during the summertime, couldn't even work in it🔥
looks good.

Looks WAY better with the new panels, trim & color matched screws. The rat guard is a dramatic improvement too. Glad you stuck to your guns.
Way to go!!!

can that building support a regular 16ft garage door with opener?
How do you like the small roof rafters?
A good ole Midwestern blow is awesome. Best insure the hell outta that big tin can.
What happened to the 16-ft choices with bracing
