More than most any other song I would have to say this is that one universal song that all diehard fans at a concert shut completely silent for and give a harsh shush to anyone talking during it. No matter the version it just sucks you in and you feel how powerful this love in the music and words feel. Thank you Dave!

Oh man this takes me back. Finally finding the Yoshis show when someone on antsmarching.org posted a link to the show on dreamingtree.org. I wore this show out summer of 2005. The funny thing is Dave has a pretty clear cold during this show, you can even hear it in this song a little. The vocals on a lot of the other songs are not very good cause he’s so clogged up. But this song is legendary.
I NEVER want this song to have steady lyrics. I love how the song's lyrics have evolved over the years. It makes every one so special. Almost like a continuing story, and I never want it to end.

This version of #40 (considered by most all DMB diehards as THE #40) is from an audio tape of a radio show Yoshi's in San Francisco from the mid-90's. I also really enjoy the Live Trax Vol. 12 version of #40. That's probably my personal favorite. Full four minute Dave Solo song.
Traded tapes in 1996 and got the show from Yoshi....Don't Burn the Pig I think was right before this. However, this was the crown jewel of the show. He must not want to play this as it's right here.
I think there is a better version.? I remember something different with better , but similar lyrics and a different path of the song. Was beautiful. Still is here as well.

this is THE EPIC yoshi with some great lyrics, but I also would never want there to be steady lyrucs to #40.. it's not he true nature of the song.... it's a song about a loves passed and how hes remembering it at the moment... it tells you a lot about dave at the time he played the song. It's wide open.. I love it anyway..

The one played in this video is the lillywhite sessions version. But, one thing - grey street is always sung with the same lyrics, and same structure. Some songs that change all the time are like, two steps intro, shotgun, or halloween.

The two step intro is what you are referring to, it is supposed to be like that. the point of two steps intro is for that exact reason, it’s supposed to be improvisation. Like the intro to dancing nancies. And so it’s not really the right comparison. Shotgun - same thing. It is unfinished. And so it will continue to to change each time it is played. The only released song (s) that break the norm with regard to set lyrics are Halloween, like you mentioned, and say goodbye. Halloween - my guess dave never even tried to remember the lyrics. With exception to the 98 tour. My guess is he likes playing this song off feeling vs a set of lyrics. For SGB - this is just a hard song to remember period. It was for me at least. The chord progression and overall song makeup can be confusing if you haven’t played it hundreds of times. So it can be very easy to forget. But song we hear live and are not recorded yet are an opportunity For dave to do just that, to work it out on the fly, both lyrically, musically, and whether or not he wants to keep playing it and working on it. Does it feel good to play live? Does the crowd like it? “Yes” ? Ok, let’s go finish it, keep working on it. “No” ? Ok.let me see if I can make this better. Let me try and add a bridge or chorus. Or, fuck it, song sucks. Done with it. That’s what is going on when there are no set lyrics.

the version he's referring to was the Yoshi's island show was a radio show setting reportedly they were very hung over for the performance dave just spit it out its a shame the radio station doesn't have a copy of the tape
best version by far. funnily, he had a bad cold or some shit so the rest of that performance was total garbage, but somehow #40 came out perfectly. also, his strumming pattern here is really good, not sure what it is, but it's different than every other version that makes it way better (maybe its the acoustic drums?). One of those lightning in a bottle performances believe it or not.
THIS is absolutely, BY FAR my favorite rendition of #40 in all of history. PLEASE, put THIS version of #40 on an album! 😍
